Travel expert tips on navigating busy holiday weekend

[00:00:00]Millions of people are traveling for Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of the summer travel season.

[00:00:11]>> Chris Sadeghi live at DFW Airport this morning with a travel expert to help you navigate the mess. Good morning, Chris.

[00:00:18]Good morning, Deion. We're getting that Memorial Day holiday travel kicked off early here at DFW. I just checked, it looks like things are back on track after all those delays with the storm yesterday. And as we get you ready for the busy summer travel season, joined here by our travel expert Steve Cosgrove with Dynamic Travel and Cruises. And I'll ask you the first thing. We know traveling on the road costing more with the gas prices. How is that affecting flight fares? Well, the air fares are up double digits. I think 15 20% was the last I saw.

[00:00:51]If you can find seats, that's the biggest problem right now is most flights are full.

[00:00:56]And They're full just because the demand is back. We saw a little bit of a lull there, but sounds like >> Yeah, well, everybody's now kicking off summer. So, we'll see longer lines here at the airport and the flights are full.

[00:01:08]So, if you miss your flight, may not be able to find another one for a day or two. Yes, make your flight. And the question we get all the time, when is the best time to book? Should you book ahead or is there a chance you get a deal late?

[00:01:22]Book as far in advance as you you know, book Christmas now.

[00:01:26]Uh, book next spring break now. Uh, will you find a last minute special? It's possible, but no telling where it's going to go to. It may be, you know, Bismarck, North Dakota or you know, some place you really don't want to go to.

[00:01:39]I hear North Dakota's nice. You're saying no, but >> [laughter] >> World Cup, that's the big event this summer. A lot of people coming in from around the world. How does that affect the average traveler if they're just trying to make their typical summer vacation plans and now have to compete with all the World Cup travelers. Well, if they're going to a city where one of the World Cup games are being played, they're going to find hotel prices higher if they can find hotels, you know, especially near the venue.

[00:02:08]Those may break and go lower as we get closer if the things don't fill up, but uh expect higher prices in places like Dallas, Seattle, New York, places where the World Cup games are taking place.
