8 Stoic Questions That Will Transform Your Life
Added:Most people live their lives completely on autopilot. They spend all their time worrying about things they can't control because they never stop to look at their own actions. Real power doesn't come from knowing everything. It comes from having the guts to ask yourself tough questions.
These eight questions will break your bad habits, expose your weaknesses, and clear your mind.
Question one, is this actually in my control?
If you want to be strong, you have to split your life into two piles, things you can actually change and things you can't.
Most people are stressed out because they waste all their energy on the wrong pile. They complain about the economy, lose sleep over what strangers think of them, or panic about stuff that hasn't even happened yet.
When things get tough, stop and ask yourself, is this actually in my control? If the answer is no, you are just torturing yourself. You can't control the market. You can't force someone to be honest, and you can't change the past. You can only control your own thoughts and your next move.
Focus only on what you can do right now and most of your anxiety will disappear.
Question two, what is the absolute worst that could happen?
Fear gets worse when you keep it vague.
When you're facing a tough choice, a new job, or an argument you don't want to have, your mind builds it up into this huge, terrifying nightmare. The best way to beat this is to sit down and look at the absolute worst-case scenario. Ask yourself, what is the absolute worst that could happen? Spell it out completely.
>> [music] >> If everything goes wrong and you lose, what does that look like?
In almost every case, you'll realize the worst-case scenario won't kill you. It might be embarrassing, it might suck, and it might be hard work to fix, but you will survive. Once you accept the absolute floor of your situation, the fear loses its grip on you.
Question three, am I working or am I just complaining?
It's very easy to mistake being busy with actually getting things done. A lot of people spend their days completely exhausted thinking they are grinding when they are really just complaining about how hard their life is. They blame their lack of money, their background, or their bad luck using these things as an excuse to avoid the risk of failing.
Be honest with yourself. Am I working or am I just complaining about the rules?
Energy spent talking about why a job is hard is energy stolen from actually doing it. The world doesn't care how hard you have it. It only cares about what you deliver.
When you stop complaining, obstacles stop being excuses and just become problems you need to solve.
Question four, whose approval am I begging for?
A huge amount of the stress you carry every day doesn't even belong to you.
It's the pressure of trying to please people you don't even like. We buy things we can't afford to impress people who don't care and we change who we are just to avoid someone speaking badly about us.
The moment you care more about applause than your own values, you lose your freedom.
>> [music] >> Ask yourself, whose approval am I begging for?
If your happiness depends on social media views, the mood of your friends, or what your boss thinks of you, you've built your own prison.
A mature mind doesn't need a crowd to feel valuable. When you stop caring about praise and stop fearing criticism, you become truly dangerous.
Question five. Is the problem real or am I just making up a story?
Nothing that happens outside of you can actually break your spirit.
>> [music] >> An event is just an event. A deal falls through, someone says something rude, or a plan gets ruined. On its own, that event is just neutral facts. The real pain starts when your brain takes those facts and builds a dramatic story around them, telling you that your life is ruined or that everything is unfair.
The next time you get angry or start to panic, ask yourself, [music] is the problem real or am I just making up a story?
When you separate the cold facts from your emotions, the crisis shrinks. A canceled plan is just a change in schedule. Stop watching the horror movie inside your own head and just deal with the reality in front of you.
Question six. What am I addicted to right now?
Every single thing you think you need is a weapon the world can use against you.
>> [music] >> When you convince yourself that you must have a specific title, a certain lifestyle, or a specific person by your side to be happy, you give away all your power. The things you think you own end up owning you, [music] forcing you to make weak choices out of fear of losing them.
Look at your life and ask, what am I addicted to right [music] now?
Real wealth isn't about having a ton of stuff. It's about needing very little to feel complete. It's being able to look at luxury or status [music] and know you'd be perfectly fine if it vanished tomorrow. When you stop needing external things to feel okay, nobody can bribe you and nobody can scare you.
Question seven, will this matter in 10 years?
Human beings are terrible at keeping perspective. A tiny argument, a bad day, or an annoying mistake can ruin your entire week as if it's the end of the world. We waste massive amounts of emotional energy on things we won't even remember a month from now.
Zoom out and ask yourself, will this matter 10 years from now? When you look at your life on a longer timeline, almost all your daily worries become completely pointless.
The traffic, the rude comments, the minor setbacks, they don't even matter.
Use this question to separate the noise from what's actually important and stop wasting your energy on small things.
Question eight, if this was my final moment, would I choose it?
The most honest tool you have is the reality that your time here is limited.
Most people live like they have an infinite amount of time to waste on stupid arguments, laziness, and distractions.
But time is the only thing you can't get back and you have no idea how much of it you have left. Bring that reality into today. If this was my final act, would I choose it?
>> [music] >> This isn't about being depressed, it's about being intentional. If you knew your time was short, you wouldn't spend the next hour arguing on the internet or holding a grudge. When you remember how short life is, the nonsense burns away and only the important stuff stays.
These eight questions are your daily defense mechanism. The world will constantly try to distract you, stress you out, and trick you into giving away your power. Your only shield is to constantly audit your own mind. When you close this video, don't just go back to scrolling. Pick the one thing that is stressing you out the most right now and run it through these eight questions.
Cut the excuses, drop the drama, and just focus on your next move.
Build your strength from the inside out.
Stay quiet and let your actions speak for you.
