This project masterfully bridges the gap between abstract engineering theory and the raw reality of physical labor. It serves as a humbling reminder that true intellectual depth is best validated through the permanence of a well-built structure.

I finally built a shop - putting up a large steel buildingHinzugefügt:
For too long now, I've been working in the rain and the snow and the mud. Last fall, I poured a concrete pad. So, finally, let's put up a shop. That's what this video is going to cover. We're going to take it from this to this. I ordered like 11,000 lb of steel, so that should be here today. Man lift showed up yesterday.
Heat. Heat.
I don't really know how I'm going to do this because the the posts on this side are 24 ft, which means I have to be up 24 ft and I hate heights. Hopefully, I can find somebody to work for free. Mr. In-N-Out, I got a job for you. Let me just talk briefly about how I want to construct this building. First and foremost, I want to build it entirely out of structural steel. I'm not the first to do this. And the idea is that it's going to last longer than I will by a lot. I'm also extremely prone to setting things on fire, so flammable materials are frowned upon in this establishment. To start off, we have 5x 5 in square tubing, quarter wall thickness. These will be attached to plates that are going to be bolted straight to the concrete. On a 40ft span, there will be four of the 5x5 steel columns. On top of that is a 40ft 8 in I-beam. For the roof rafters, I'll be using 10-in C channel stood up on end, which is the strongest way that the C channel can sit. And last, but certainly not least, is the roofing material. These are 6T 12T sheets of 8 in sheet metal. This entire load of steel weighs about 15,000 lb, and most of it has to be lifted up into the air. Now, the 5x5 steel columns along the building side are all 24 ft tall. The 5x5 columns on the opposite side of the concrete pad are 20 ft tall, which gives this roof about a three pitch slope. Does that make sense? Let's keep moving.
Yeah.

I may have bitten off more than I can chew this time. I'll still chew it.

This is like a cloud.
Okay. So, basket, these are rated for 4,800 lb. Choke, it's 19. Vertical, it's 2400. Wow. Choke is less than vertical. That's interesting. Choke me vertically in a basket.
What is this? Some kind of landfill?
Pick up your garbage. Let's not leave that stuff around.
Heat. Heat.
Oh man, he stopped back. Uh That's really bright in my eyeballs. That's even worse. Holy c So, I got these plates made up. What are you guys doing? Huh? What are you guys doing? They're boys.
I don't know if this is going to work or But this has been my plan all along. So if this fails, I don't know what I'm going to do. Is this going to work, buddy? Who knows?
I wouldn't say it's happy about it, but I think it'll work.
Heat. Heat.
That's scary. I got to do something different because I was pretty much stuck up there. I couldn't hold that thing by myself and reach the ratchet strap and strap it and I needed the bottom of the post knocked like moved around. I couldn't. So, all right, let's try something different.
That's pretty much perfect that way.
Hey, Guess I should have gone deeper than that.
That feels like it's done. All right.
Heat.
Heat.
Fairly sucky day.
I added this scaffolding back here a long time ago and then a tree fell on it accidentally. It needs to go.
Look out. Look at that sizzling on an extension cord. Oops.
I originally put that up there so I to get up to the top of the first container before I had stacked the second one. So, this is kind of my plan here. I'll bring the columns in with a teleah handler, set them up, get them roughly straight, and then bring this chain around like so and hook it here. That'll keep that column from being able to fall at all if it was like a safety chain, but it still allows me to move the bottom around to wherever I need it. And then I can weld it in place kind of from the ground up. And I got chains there and there. So I'm dividing this whole span by three, which makes the the dimensions 13' 3 in. So the post is going to sit right here. I got to cut out some of the stair.
Somebody didn't weld that very well.
That should be cut out enough for the column to go in.
A little bit over here.
Come here.
I'm sorry.
Like a glove.
Welcome. I'm VWXYZ.
Dude, thank you very much. Yeah, happy to.
Heat. Heat.
all the concrete anchors in. She's welding up the braces on the low side to hold these posts against. There's going to be the same type of thing up top.
Good steer.
Oh yeah.
All right, we got this thing rigged up. So, this is like a pick an eye thing. I don't know. And I know it's on a pretty steep angle, but I'm going to try to lift and see what happens.
These pegs right here are basically alignment pins to line up with the top of the columns.
Heat. Heat.

For being one of those little $11 Amazon welders, this thing actually does pretty nice. It probably lasts 15 minutes total, but but it welds good till it goes pop.
That's the end of day two. And to have all that done, I am just over the freaking moon. I thought that was going to kind of be the hardest part.
Next thing is going to set this wall that doesn't have anything to attach itself to.
Next morning here, I'm just going through and buttoning up a couple of things.
There's a couple of gussets that need to be welded up top. Little stuff like that.
I need the beam to come this way or the post to go that way.
I mean, that's not bad for an $80 Amazon welder. Those are fully welded out on both sides. Same thing down there.
That one's done. And I just got to go do that last one down at the end.
Just stopped welding mid weld. Assuming I am outwired. Yeah. Well, that didn't take long.
There goes that generator again. Don't ever buy anything that says champion on the side of it.
This thing is such a piece of government. It will not run with a fuel cap on it.
Oh no, it's not going to run anyway.
I'm going to go dump some of this stuff in there. I don't think there's water in that thing. I think it's just a piece of junk.
This thing is totally worthless. Well, now it runs only on choke.
Now, you're not going to believe this. Another small carbureted engine that refuses to stay running.
planned obsolescence.
You pay 1,500 bucks or whatever you and you get one season out of it.
Here it is raining again. Boy, it sure would be nice to have a roof in this situation and then I could work inside and I wouldn't get rained on. I should put up Let me put up a roof real quick.
Wasn't supposed to rain today. How exciting.
Got to look for the little things to be grateful for in every day.
I literally put this last bit of weld here on my last pass on the last column and the generator died. Got to be grateful for the little things.

I'm going to leave the tail handler up there just as a added safety measure. This is pretty solid, I think.
I mean, yeah, not great, but I don't think it's going to blow over anywhere.
That was the hard part of the hard part. Now we'll put this up. I think that'll be a little easier. When you use angle, it's a little lighter to work with.
That's tough to do by yourself. Gee whiz. Sweating like a fat kid dodgeball or something like that.
Perfect.
I don't know what you guys think about flux core welding. It is a little bit harder than regular MIG. Like you you keep your tip a little bit farther away and and it's messy and it smells and it's smoky. It does burn hotter than Meg. And dude, honestly, this thing is I don't know.
At the end of this, this thing may win unsung hero award. An award exclusively here at 99 Projects.
This post is about five inches out of level this way.
I want to see if I can use wedges at the bottom to level it up.
Perfect. Now, a quick spacer could be made to just slip in there and then tighten these down. That should keep that pretty level to where I can put that cross brace over, which is going to keep it from rocking in and out. Uncle Joel gave me these wedges, and he's probably going to watch this at some point. They were put to good use. And Uncle Joel is partially responsible for my excessive horizontal surface abusing.

A Truck Norris going home.
It has been sold back to the family that originally owned that truck, which is pretty cool.
Heat.
Heat. Going to chalk that up to operator error and hope that that doesn't continue.
I got that post set. I'm going to set the I-beam and then set that last post after the I-beam's up. The camera battery died and I can't like change a camera battery mid post set.
All right, we were going to try to set up over here and then reach up over here, but the machine is furious and it's a little sketchy being on that hillside.
I forgot to film that I was brought this I-beam up, you know, just doing like four things in my head at one time, which is four things more than I can do. I can't even walk.
Yeah, I'll grab Heat.
Heat.
Son of a gun. Slightly inconvenient. Although it could have been more inconvenient if it had been stuck like up there. So, I drive the drive shaft coming off the engine. Uh, like came apart. Pretty inopportune time to have that happen. Also, don't like standing under this thing. There's supposed to be a drive shaft there. Get the needle bearings out of this. I really want to just get this pump spinning again so I can get the stupid thing on the ground. When was the last time this machine was PM, sir? What? What's a PM? that make it. Oh, yeah. There you go. Yeah, right there. It's sitting in there. But I got those bolts back in. It's very temporary.
It's enough to lower this thing on the ground where I can fix it slightly more permanently.
Oh, that worked. Crisis averted. Let's get in that stupid head. See if it's in a better spot now. Wait. See if you can get the No. What in the world? How are you supposed to get What if uh can we get a short socket on the backside? Yeah, maybe on this thing is just pitiful.
I'm sure that's fine. There it's out. So, it just disintegrated this one. You know, if a guy would do a regular PM on these, probably grease it every once in a blue moon. Couple of days later, my buddy's back. The tele handler is fixed. Try to set this beam this time.
My $80 Amazon welder is working intermittently. I can't believe it. The quality these days has just gone down the toilet. This end is still way out like probably 2 in at the top. So, unfortunately, we're just going to cut that weld and pull that post into where it's supposed to be.
All right. So, that frames a little bit out of level. It's got to come this way.
I bet I can sell these to Wrangler Star for his coming struggle saying yes, but it's a little bit flat for now. All right.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.

That's number three. We got it sitting over there. He's setting them 4 ft on center, then welding them in. Here's a nice example of stupid. This is the old blade on my metal cutting circular saw and it has like a seven 7/8 inch diameter hole in the center. This stupid thing was a spare that I bought and it has a 5/8 in diameter hole in the center. But why in God's green earth would there ever be two different size center holes for a circular saw? Whoever did this should go straight to jail. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Now I have to turn into some kind of philistine and fix this.
How nice. It's not going to draw that. That just sets me right over the front edge. You ought to be ashamed. XMNBL.
Piece of china.
All right. So, that's the full that's the 12T of the sheet. So, now I'll set the sheet up there and I'll have to weld three sheets out before I put 12 more feet on.
That's going on the subscription account.
Yep.
I don't think this back up.
Nice perfect cut with a cutting torch. Sort of It's not hot. Oh, hey. The hot lead's not plugged in. I would just jump that gap. You would think with these new Bluetooth leads. Try that.
Oh man, I got to make an apology here. Uh, so this is the this is what happened. Every single saw blade sold on the shelf at Lowe's has a 5/8 inch arbor. Evolution has some 78 or 20 millimeter nonsensical arbor. This is planned obsolescence. Never buy one of these tools. Yeah, Evolution is now a swear word around here. I have to buy a blade from them. I can't go and and get a regular blade. I have to go, which I have bought two now. I went and bought two because allegedly there was some stupid spacer that that doesn't even make sense. It's ridiculous. Don't ever buy one of these. If you have Evolution stuff, throw it right in the garbage. Evolution, I'll give you a chance to make this right. Send me a Milwaukee metal cutting circular saw and we'll call it even.
Royal Majesty in the Majesty's Navy is shown up. That guy right there is not scared of hard work. He'll stand next to it all day. Done, Dad. This outside wall is still a little wobbly. I got this piece of channel cut at the right angle to go up there. So, this side will go like this. Keep this thing from slipping out while I'm up there.
Now, this thing can't kick out this way. And it can't really kick out the other way cuz that bolt out of wire right there. And that's frustrating.
Still a little bit of a gap to fill there, but that's not too bad.
All right, that is in there. Really nice. One of the things is that when you pushed on this, there was a lot of wobble, which is fine because I mean these are 20T pulls. They're flex. But now when you push on this end like forcing it like that, that center that brace I just put in, it'll wobble a little bit. So that's where all that energy is going to is that brace or that brace is taking the energy out. Whichever way you want to look at it, I guess. And this probably will need, you know, this has a lot of flex in it this way, but maybe another X brace the other way. I didn't do a whole lot today aside from just going around all the seams, all the joints, welding everything, making sure everything's clean and like absolutely everything's completely welded out.
Just all that I need.
Then I can get back to me.
These fork extensions kind of suck. They have a tendency of sliding off when there's weight on them at the least opportune time. Those bolts are just going to eliminate the temptation for disobedience.
Oh, I love the rain. Give it up.
Well, the first sheet is vicariously suspended up there.
Slight revision to my evolution crisis. They did actually send an arbor that adapts from this stupid size to the size everybody else sells. So, this will technically work. However, the saw should be able to accept whatever I can get off the shelf at the closest hardware store.
This proprietary planned obsolescence nonsense. Take it somewhere else. The first sheet is in.
I got it welded in place so it can't go anywhere. Uh, tough to film that part. I I'll do better next time. you know, worried about safety and stuff. It's raining, but it's not raining right here.
and And Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
All right, next day here and I got three sheets up there. I still have a half a sheet to go up. I'll get that done today. I got a couple more pieces of steel in this morning.
These are going to be the headers. Both of these will go from the basically the top of the container straight across front and back. I got some 4-in channel that'll finish out the not really X bracing in the this wall, which will really stiffen up this whole building. I got to get all these rafters cut and prepped. So, we're just putting an angle and then a peg on it so it catches over the I-beam on the container wall.
Okay, I got all these trusses prepped. So, they got these legs on them which just catches over the I-beam so that the guy in the man lift can weld it in place without worrying about sliding off.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
It's kind of crazy how heavy that thing is. Like it's a 5x5 square and that sucker is heavy.
Originally, I was going to run that header at like 17 1/2 ft, but it's kind of hard to get it up there, which isn't a big deal. I don't I can do hard things. But if I put it at this 8 foot level here, then I can use that as the setting point for the floor of the loft cuz I I want to put a loft eventually from that post over to this post. So I can kind of kill two stones with one bird by doing that.
And that's in. I'll weld it completely out.
So, there's quite a gap there. That's probably a half inch or so. So, what I done is I've hooked up this comealong over there and I'm going to pull that post this way maybe half the distance. You kind of got to be careful doing this because by pulling that you're essentially putting a bow in it or you could if you were to go that full distance. I'm and then you're kind of putting stress on all kinds of joints outwardly. So I'm just going to pull like half the distance and hope I can bring this together to make it a little easier to weld.
I think we're asking a lot there. I have my sledgehammer. Please. Just going to try to pop it up over the weld. Yeah, there we go. We're kind of splitting that distance between them. I'm going to call that good. But this gap's a lot tighter, but it did kind of pull it up here, so I It'll be fine.
I know there's going to be some kid straight out of welding school who's going to say, "That'll never hold. You can't have gaps like that. I I would have said the same thing right after I started. And you know, if I was watching me do this now, when I first learned how to weld, I'd probably say the same thing. But in structural welding, they gap stuff all the time so they get a full penetration weld. That's not what I'm going for. I'm going for a full penetration weld here, but I didn't intentionally leave the gap that big. That's just the way it goes. You're welcome to comment and tell me what an idiot I am. And all I would say is I'd say the same thing, but go out, get a few years under your belt in the trade, and in a couple of years, I think you'll be like, "Yeah, you know what? It works." Maybe, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it'll fall down.
A bunch of you guys have sent in super chats to the channel, which is extremely generous.
And going forward, anybody that does that, I'm going to write their name on the door. Thank you all very much. I really appreciate that. Oh, I can't make this stuff up. I just cut this.
That's a 12T sheet back on this stupid evolution saw. I think what they mean is it's just not done evolving. Okay. So, if I lock the brake on the saw, notice this isn't spinning. The blade is slipping inside of the clamp. And this thing is tight. I tighten this with an impact. You know, there's the whole center not spinning. And I'm spinning the engine. And then you lock it. So now it doesn't even cut anymore. And after I found that stupid adapter, I canceled the return on this. But I think this thing's getting returned again. I'm not saying I'm getting old, but my back goes out more than I do. A week or so later here, I got my buddy back out. We just set the four next rafters. The next thing going up there is going to be the steel sheets, just like I did at the far end.
Heat. Heat.

That's that last sheet on this that first section on the roof.
And he's getting that squared up. So that'll be totally covered there.
I got that second sheet up there. It's I I should throw the drone up. It's kind of hard to film like putting it over the top cuz we're trying to be careful and you know yada yada yada Another sheet up there.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.

What are you doing, buddy? What do you think? Wrapping up another day here. Got a bunch done.
Thinking I kind of want to start something new on the channel. My dad, who passed away several years ago, was a dad joke connoisseur and most of them were terrible. But it's one of the things that I really remember about my dad and I miss him terribly. All of this here was started after he passed away several years ago. And I heard a song the other day by I think Alex Warren. I think the song was Save You a Seat. And it was something about are you proud of what you see watching up there with the angels and man it just it just made me think. So bringing this all back around as kind of a remembrance to my dad and I'm sure a lot of you guys are in similar situations. I want to hear your guys best dad jokes. And the great thing about YouTube is as long as YouTube is here so will those jokes. And I hope if somebody's watching this and they're struggling with something and if they see your guys' jokes I hope that brings some kind of peace to them. I hope that helps. We can do hard things.
I got the last rafter strung up. He's welding in that one. Then we're setting the last few sheets. Hopefully we can beat the rain.

What are you doing, buddy? What do you think about all this?
How do you feel about it? Get down. Look at this. Get down.
What a good dog. You're a good boy. Where's your brother? Where's Max? Huh? He's not partying in the rain like you are. Look at you, buddy. Good boy. Get down. Down. Down.
So, I'm sure you'll find this hard to believe, but it's raining again. But look at this. All right, so the roof is on. This was not wet because that piece was still missing. Look at the rest of the pad. pretty much completely dry. Little bit coming in down here. That's cuz I don't have a good overhang here. And then there's a little bit coming in here because there's no wall up there. And it's keeping it pretty much, you know, like ft out from there. So, and then the front of the pad's wet cuz I don't have the roof on up there yet.
Hold it.

Heat up here.

That's it. And that's all. Chops built, man. I cannot believe it. You got to step outside your comfort zone. You got to do hard things. You got to challenge yourself. This when I when I unloaded the steel, I was pretty overwhelmed immediately. I I was concerned that I had gotten way over in over my head. And I think I did. I think, you know, this was this was a real challenge. To date, this is probably the biggest single challenge I've taken on. I'm going to do something bigger and more challenging in the future. Do hard things.
All right, you guys. That's going to wrap up this phase of the shop build. Just show you a couple of things I did. I added a 4ft overhang out here. That's really nice. I'm keeping the rain out there. And I did the same thing out here. So it, you know, it keeps the rain away from the edge of the pad. Now, this isn't perfect. I still do get a little bit of water in here. Honestly, most of it is because the water drips down onto the top container and then it runs in here. None of it's really coming in here because it's raining. It's just run off from the containers. So, I have to add a lip up there like a gutter type thing. I already did it above this door. I just ran out of time to do it on the rest of them. You can kind of see how those they're not X braces, but that kind of all worked. And not really shown on camera, but there's a header up there, too. That's sitting at like 17 1/2 ft. So, you know, most big garage doors are 16. That's a foot and a half taller than that. I don't know. That about covers it, I guess. If you guys have any questions about it, let me know. I I know it's not like a traditional building, but this is what I've wanted to do for a long time, and I'm glad I held out and waited till I had the capability to do it this way. And as you can see, I'm already working under here. I'm really proud of this building. It's not enclosed. That's a future thing. Rome wasn't built in the day.
All right, guys. I'm going to end this video here. It was a tremendous undertaking. I'm so glad it's done. I can finally work out of the snow and the rain. still out in the cold, but you know, that's part of it. I truly cannot thank the friends who came out and helped me put this up enough. Like, I literally would not have been able to do it without those guys.
Thank you guys very much for watching. I'll catch you on the flippity flop.
