Because those men have come under the shelter of his roof.

A father facing a violent mob does not say take me. He does not say I will defend everyone in this house with my life.
He does not even say leave us all in peace.
He offers his own children.
He volunteers them to be assaulted by a crowd in the street as a substitute for two men he met that same afternoon.
And the text does not present this as his shame or his failure or the moment his character collapsed.
The tradition built on the text calls this man righteous.
Centuries later another part of scripture would name him righteous Lot.
A man tormented by the wickedness around him.
One of the few worth rescuing.
His defining act of virtue the thing that supposedly set him apart from the doomed included the willingness to hand his daughters to rapists to protect his guests. Sit in the cold of that for a moment.
Because the horror here is not anatomical and we are not going to make it so.
The horror is bureaucratic. It is the horror of a label.
Somewhere in the machinery of this tradition a clerk of the sacred stamped the word righteous onto a man who did this.
And the stamp stuck.
And it has been handed down through thousands of years and read aloud to children as a model of the kind of person God saves.
That is the truly disturbing thing. Not the act in the heat of one terrible night but the calm retroactive paperwork that filed the act under virtue and never revised the entry.
Righteousness in this story is not a description of how a person behaves.
It is a designation assigned from above attached to whoever the narrative has decided to spare.
And it overrides the evidence of their actual conduct entirely.
The man is righteous because the story needs him saved.
And so the story simply declares it.

If they could do that why did they wait?
These are beings with the power to blind an entire mob with a wave of the hand.
They had that power the whole time.
They had it while Lot was outside negotiating.
They had it while a father was offering his daughters to a crowd.
They sat inside that house and let the scene escalate to the edge of catastrophe.
Let a man bargain away his children.
And only intervened at the final dramatic instant when the door was already buckling.
That is not how beings of limitless power behave.
That is how characters in a story behave when an author needs tension first and rescue second.
The messengers were made weak so that Lot could look brave.
Then made powerful so the night could be survived.
And they conveniently forgot for the length of one harrowing scene the abilities they would suddenly remember the moment the plot required them. If that were the only scene you might explain it away.
It is not.
Six verses after Lot describes his daughters as young women who have never been with a man.
Virgins by the text's own explicit language.
He runs to warn his sons-in-law.
The men who had married his daughters that the city is about to be destroyed.
Read those two statements side by side.
The daughters have never known a man.
The daughters have husbands.
Both claims sit within a handful of sentences of each other.

In a culture where marriage was finalized through consummation where a woman's virginity was a matter of enormous social and legal weight this is not a subtle tension.

For Lot's sake, this town will not be overthrown.

Lot and his two daughters end up living in a cave in the hills, isolated, the mother gone, the cities behind them destroyed, and the daughters, the text tells us, conclude that there are no men left anywhere to give them children.
That their family line will simply end in this cave.
So, on two successive nights, they give their father wine until he is insensible.
And each in turn lies with him while he is too drunk to know what is happening.
Both conceive.
Both bear sons.
And those sons are given names.
And from those names descend two peoples.
The elder daughter's son becomes the father of one nation.
The younger daughter's son becomes the father of another.
Two peoples born from this cave, from this wine, from this deception. And the instant you learn the names of those two nations, the entire purpose of the scene snaps into focus.
Because they are not random.
They are two of the peoples that the nation telling this story would spend centuries fighting, resenting, warring against, and despising.
This is the seam pulling fully open.
The human hand no longer just visible, but waving.
Strip away the religious framing and ask the cold question a true crime investigator would ask.
Who benefits from this story? Who gains something by it existing?
And the answer is immediate and unmistakable.
The people who wrote it gained a weapon.
They gained the ability to say of their enemies, those nations across the border, the ones we fight.
The ones we are taught to hold in contempt.
They did not begin as a people the way we did. They began in a cave.
In incest.
In a daughter deceiving a drunken father.
Their entire bloodline is contaminated at the root. They are not merely our rivals.
They are the product of something shameful.
Inferior by their very origin.
Beneath us before they ever drew a sword against us. That is not history. That is not even theology. That is propaganda.
And it is propaganda of a very recognizable kind.
The kind that attacks not what an enemy does, but what an enemy is. The cruelest and most effective slander a people can level at another is the one aimed at their origin.
Because a people can change their behavior, but they can never change where they came from.
Tell a story that says your enemy is wicked.
And your enemy can answer by being good.
But tell a story that says your enemy was conceived in shame.
That contempt is woven into their bloodline from the first generation.
And you have built a hatred that no amount of good behavior on their part can ever wash out. This origin tale was almost certainly attached to the larger narrative for exactly that reason.
To manufacture a shameful birth for hated neighbors and then bind it into the same scroll as the sacred history of the people doing the hating.
It is political warfare dressed in the robes of scripture.
And it has been read aloud to children for thousands of years as moral instruction. And now step back and look at the whole machine at once.
Because the seven cracks were never really separate. A God who has to travel to find out what is happening in a city.
A God who can be argued down from his own judgment.
Six. Time.
By a man at a market price.
A father who offers his daughters to a mob and is filed under righteous anyway.
Daughters who are virgins and married in the space of six verses.
A city spared for no moral reason while a woman is destroyed for a glance. A pillar of salt that bears the unmistakable shape of a folk tale told backward from a landscape. And finally, an origin myth purpose-built to poison the bloodline of enemy nations.
Each crack on its own might be argued away.
Together, they describe one thing.
And it is not the seamless word of an eternal, perfect God.
It is a human document assembled by people, edited by people with goals, stitched from older sources by hands that did not always reconcile their seams, carrying the political grudges, the cultural assumptions, and the limited conceptions of the divine of the specific ancient society that produced it. The fingerprints are not hidden in some locked vault. They are pressed into every page for anyone willing to read with their eyes open instead of their head bowed.
This is what the lens grinder saw.
And it is what it cost him to see it.
Baruch Spinoza read these texts the way you would read any other ancient writing with attention and without flinching.
And he concluded that they were the work of human authors and editors rather than dictation from heaven. For that conclusion, he was cut off entirely from his own community while still a young man.
Formally cursed and expelled.
His name made unspeakable among the people he had grown up with. His writings were condemned and banned across much of Europe.
Treated as something close to poison.
He lived quietly, modestly, grinding glass to support himself.
The very dust of that trade slowly destroying his lungs in a poorly ventilated room.
He died at 44 having gained no wealth, no family of his own, no safety, no return to the community that had expelled him.
He died by every external measure having lost.
And yet he died having looked at the thing directly and named what he saw.
Which is a kind of freedom most people never touch in a full and comfortable lifetime. So, here is where it leaves you.
And notice that we are back where we began.
In that small chair with that cold question sliding into place.
Except you are not seven anymore.
You are not too small to read carefully.
You are not defenseless against a story.
And the story has now shown you its hands.
The dark truth at the bottom of Sodom and Gomorrah was never the fire.
The fire was always the distraction.
The spectacle that kept your eyes up at the burning sky while the real work happened down at ground level.
The real work was the fear itself.
A story this useful, this frightening, this perfectly shaped to teach obedience and dread of questioning and contempt for the outsider was never primarily about what God did to two cities.
It was about what the story does to the people who hear it.
That is the banality of the evil here.
Not a monster cackling over a plan, but ordinary people in an ordinary ancient nation encoding their fears and their hatreds and their need to control one another into a narrative.
Filing it under the divine and handing it down across the generations until it reached a small child in a quiet room who believed every word. You were handed that fear before you could examine it. You can hand it back now.
That is not rebellion. It is simply reading the page that was always in front of you.
