[00:03:52]I'm Derek and this is the going to town tour 2026. Black Hills to Badlands.

[00:03:57]We're super excited. We just pulled in at our first stop, the old O'Reilly Auto Parts. We're going to gear up. I'm with a ton of my friends and we're going to have a ton of new friends. There are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of cars invading western South Dakota. Here's the plan. We're going to take our old junk boxes. I ended up with this Nova after my Firebird time. Wow.

[00:04:20]And we're going to drive this thing.

[00:04:21]Well, today the first leg is Piedmont to Legendary Sturgis to Belfoo to Deadwood Lead. And that's where we're going to end tonight. But then we're going to continue through the hills all the way through scenic back roads, Needles Highway, Mount Rushmore, Keystone, Hill City, uh tail or uh pigtails. We're going to do Kuster State Park. Then we're going to go all the way across the Badlands on my secret road. And then we're going to end up at Berto for the end party and the museum. This is going to be a tremendous amount of fun hanging out with friends, meeting new friends, and seeing if our rigs can survive.

[00:05:19]So, I know some of you are going, "What is the Going Towns tour? I haven't heard of this." Actually, a large majority of you. Well, it's a show that I've done for a few years that I've renamed.

[00:05:28]Actually, this is the fourth year that we've done it. We started doing this seven or eight years ago. Uh we actually uh started in the Black Hills, did one in Minnesota, then we did a tour in Wisconsin. It grew so fast we couldn't get our arms around it and it ended up being unorganized chaos and I didn't want it to be a vacation that people didn't enjoy. So my wife and I pinned it up. But now we've got enough great friends and volunteers and fans to really help us organize this show. So we brought it back and renamed it Going to Towns tour. The goal is simple. Meet up with like-minded people in the car community, the car culture, and get them connected to the local communities. go through small businesses, small towns, gas stations, antique stores, you know, sites to see, and things along the road, and just explore as a group. And we're doing that again right now in western South Dakota. We're starting off in the Black Hills, and we're going to end up in the Badlands. Now, next year, we're going to advertise this a little bit more, and you'll probably hear about it.

[00:06:31]We wanted to start with a smaller group again to make sure that this was enjoyable. And we also needed a smaller group because 176 cars mathematically is one static mile of traffic. We have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds more than that. A lot of these small towns the traffic line is going to be longer than the town. Well, that just means we're sitting in traffic overheating.

[00:06:54]So this year I just wanted to kind of keep it a little smallerish group. Next year we're going to open the dam on this thing and you'll be able to join us.

[00:07:02]Just follow along on the social medias or on the channel here and you'll hear about it. Now, how this works is pretty simple. There is a route, very detailed.

[00:07:11]I mean, literally turn by turn instructions. It has feet. It has things to do, places to stop, places to eat, you know, touristy stuff. It's really designed to create a vacation environment for families, kids, things of that nature. And there's checkpoints along the way where you can check in and it kind of is a breadcrumb trail. Now, the cool thing is you don't have to do that. You can just willy-nilly come and go off the route if you want. You can not even follow the route and just show up at the spots where we're hanging out and have fun. But if you do do the checkpoint and you make it all the way through the route with your rig to the end, you get the coveted town hall award, which is a big metal sign. I'm going for the town hall award. I want one in the shop. So, we're at our first uh stop here at O'Reilly Auto. We're going to get some parts. We need a door crank, some fluid, some things like that. And then we're going to head on towards the next stop is Wif Motors. So, of course, with the rigs that we drive, the first stop I put on the route is in O'Reilly. And thank you to O'Reilly.

[00:08:15]They're letting us crash two of their locations. They have gigantic parking lots at these spots so we can come in and make sure that we got coolant and electric fans and, you know, air fresheners and cup holders and things of that nature. I need a window crank for my truck that my buddy Chad's driving.

[00:08:31]They used to have them on the wall back in the day. Here they are right here.

[00:08:40]And we'll get some other stuff and then we're going to hit the road.

[00:10:17]One of the stops along the trip is Welful Motors. You guys have been here many times, but now there's a whole bunch of people wandering around, which is great. Hopefully Roger can rehome some of this stuff, but I am on the hunt for a pink Thunderbird that I bought allegedly and had dropped off here. I've never seen it. So, we're going to go up on the hill, try to find it. And I've got a bunch of other cars here too that I just want to kind of, you know, make sure they haven't disappeared. And then I make a plan to forget about them for another decade. Basically, it'll be fun.

[00:14:04]All right, so we walked all over this place, memory lane, looking at stuff, tried to buy a few things, maybe made a couple deals, not really sure. Now we're going to head off from here, go to the back roads to legendary Sturgis. They have the Sturgeist motorcycle rally there. They have a really cool motorcycle museum, a bunch of stuff like that. But we're going to head outside of town to the Full Throttle Saloon. This used to be a TV show back in the day.

[00:14:26]There's a lot of eclectic weird stuff and signs and industrial things. It's really cool. We'll probably get a bite, some refreshments, and then we're going to continue our journey. This has been a blast already.

[00:15:50]So, the legendary Full Throttle Saloon during the Sturgeist Rally. You can't even walk in here. It is a sea of bikes.

[00:15:57]A really cool place. Again, this is our second location outside of town. Uh we left late, like 11:00, so a lot of the cars are ahead of us, but it seems like there's a lot of people here eating lunch. There's probably 50 60 cars.

[00:16:10]There's a bunch more pulling in. We're going to go inside, see the sites. They got a distillery, moonshine, food, all sorts of cool stuff. Let's go check it out.

[00:16:28]A little bit of everything here.

[00:16:31]There's a sign back here that says, "The bar is dedicated all the men, women, and equipment that built this great country." The pieces of equipment in here are just ginormous. It's actually really cool.

[00:17:02]Well, we are up on a I don't know what you call this skywalk. They got a couple legit old school like train bridges and stuff over here. Three of them. It's been a while since I've been here. the metal sculptures, signs, all sorts of different buildings and stuff. Really fun place during the Sturgeist Rally. I've never been here off season, but we're filling this place up, having a lot of fun. We're about ready to roll again. Getting some Chick-on strips.

[00:17:30]I I don't know. We're going to head north on 79 and then across one of my favorite highways over to Belfoose, South Dakota, where is the geographical center of the continent, I think. I don't know. Let's go find it.

[00:18:22]We are in Belfoo, South Dakota. There's a couple reasons I wanted to come here.

[00:18:27]obviously O'Reilly Auto Parts, but the geographical center of the nation and all the back roads, farm communities.

[00:18:34]There's a ton of old farm equipment, iron, stuff like that, cars, things of that nature. We're going to top off here with fuel, some groceries. I'm going to run in, say hi to the O'Reilly's guys.

[00:18:45]We have absolutely filled their parking lot. We are starting to catch up to the group, I think, little by little, which is kind of wild cuz we're in LA a little bit, but this has been a blast so far.

[00:18:56]No one's broke down in our group. Oh, I just It's probably going to be Adam and the Honda.

[00:19:06]That's not Adam, but that is the Honda.

[00:19:09]Adam's going to be like, "What in the world?" No, this is actually Actually, let's go through this quick. We got my daily square body. Chad, not Chad or the other Chad, but Chad the Eagle Great is driving that. Ricocheter are driving the Tri Five. Andy and his father are driving Firebird gear. Uh that's a new friend we've picked up a lock away.

[00:19:28]That's Chad Good. And the 400 in that car is the one from the uh red volunteer douly. That thing's running great. This is our friends Adam and his wife. This is Cody.

[00:19:42]And that is a movie correct police 178 cruiser, including the missing lug nuts on the left front. Don't worry about that. And then you got Heidi and the camera Chad rolling in the uh what is that thing? Dodge Challenger.

[00:19:58]>> It's pretty slick. It's got AC and stuff, I guess. You know, they didn't want to drive old things. No, I'm kidding. It's really nice. She's giving me the how dare you look.

[00:20:10]All right, I'm going to go get an air freshener, say hi to these guys, and then we're going to get fuel and go over to that uh Lambark thing.

[00:20:29]Center of the nation visitor center.

[00:20:31]Tri-State Museum. I've been through Bell Foo Belefore a Bajillion Niner 411 times.

[00:20:39]I'm embarrassed to say I've never stopped here before. This is a cabin built in 1876.

[00:20:46]And right down here is the geographical center of the continent, which is like weird that it's here. It doesn't seem like it would be here, but it is. It's right down here. We're going to go stand on it and go, "Yep."

[00:20:59]And then we'll just go after that, I guess. But I think that's what you're supposed to do. Here's the cabin.

[00:21:11]Uh, okay. Blah blah blah. Yep. Mhm. He lived here for 11 years. Uh-huh. Got it.

[00:21:25]It's probably 140 square foot. More than a guy needs, but it'll do.

[00:21:49]I thought it was just going to be like a Nintendo coin on the ground, but it's like a whole thing.

[00:22:13]>> Made it. Okay, >> was good. So, we just got into a full fisticus between us here.

[00:22:21]>> I was saying continent >> which has like Canada and there's other things up in the where the >> Santa Claus comes from.

[00:22:31]>> It's the nation allegedly, but I think there's another one of these, isn't there? Like the four corners or something. Arizona, New Mexico, uh Colorado, Utah. They also claim it.

[00:22:44]So what they're doing is they're saying if you go here and buy a snowshoe and then you come over here and drink sewer water and get a seashell. This is the center of the I don't know. I don't know stars and stuff.

[00:24:48]Yeah.

[00:25:34]Okay, so we finished going through the plains from Belfoo and started working our way into the Black Hills. We just went up legendary Spearfish Canyon past Bridal Veil Falls up by the Latching Restaurant or Spearfish Canyon. During the summer, it's like hiking, touristy stuff. During the winter, you rent snow machines and do all that. Worked our way through Leed and now we're in Deadwood.

[00:25:57]And I stopped in at Mount Mariah Cemetery. This place is legendary.

[00:26:01]Deadwood is an old gunslinger gold town from early 1800s. And on this hill is buried Seth Bullock, Wild Bill Hickok, the famous card player, gunslinger that got shot. Preacher Smith, he was murdered in 1876, I think. Potato Creek, Johnny, Calamity, Jane, and much, much more. We're going to walk up here and see if we can find their grave sites, pay some respects, maybe do some EVPs and EMF detecting. I don't know what we're doing. And this hill is I'm out. It's the Legoses and the Honda Maximuses are burning, but we'll see if we can make it. This should be fun.

[00:26:46]up yonder about three miles more. It's easy. Mr. Thompson, I think 18 26 I think that says all these grave sites are like really really old.

[00:27:00]They're doing a tour up there right now, so I'm not going to yell too loud. We'll wait for them to leave and then go up.

[00:27:06]Hello. Here I am. Wild Bill Hook. He's somewhere in this thing. And then up behind that is Calamity Jane. He died with the dead man's hand or what it's called. Two black aces, two black eights with an unknown hole car. Someone probably just sat down and kept playing his hand. We don't we don't really know. I just heard from the tour bus driver there's 900 people buried in a potter's field, which is just a place for unknown people to be buried in this vicinity. It's kind of spooky, actually. A lot of this stuff, like I said, is very old 1800 stuff.

[00:27:44]Okay, we're going to take some photos, catch some ghosts, and then head downtown Deadwood. It's all of the old storefronts, general stores, drugstores, mercantiles, saloons, brothel, things of that nature that are now converted to casinos and hotels. It's actually really cool. And the street is still bricks and stuff like that. It's pretty awesome.

[00:28:44]Well, good morning. Last night was a lot of fun. We ate way too much. Had some Rocky Mountain oysters. Did anyone win money or are we all down? You won.

[00:28:53]>> Nice. Okay. Well, we're going to pretend I am, too. Anyway, we stayed in the Bolic, which was built in 1895 by Deadwood's first sheriff. This used to be the edge of the town, actually, and he sold it in 1905 to Mr. Ayes and it was then known as the Ayers walk. You can see up top way up there. It got changed. It's a really cool hotel. It was originally 63 rooms. Now it's like 32 or something like that. We all got haunted last night. I'm not really sure.

[00:29:20]There was some weird stuff that happened though. But anyway, last night was incredible. This town was virtually everyone we ran into had a wristband on.

[00:29:29]They were doing the go in the town tour.

[00:29:31]Taught cars all night. Had a lot of fun.

[00:29:33]We're meeting up with a big group this morning down here on the edge of town after getting some coffee and we're going to roll through the heart of the hills. Today is going to be absolutely breathtaking and incredible. Tons of stops. We'll see Mount Rushmore today, Keystone, maybe Hill City. We're going to see if the needles are open and we're going to end up all the way down in Kuster by Kuster State Park after doing a loop down there. It's going to be really cool. Let's get after it. We got a fun day.

[00:31:14]So, a guy did pick an original route of taking 385 cuz it's kind of a historic road down towards Pacola Reservoir. And then we jump on 16 from there. But they're doing some road construction that hasn't quite finished. It's got some gravel on it. And um you know, we got some vice grip cars, but then we've got some really nice rigs out here, which is great. I love seeing people out here driving them, but some folks don't really want to go on that gravel. So, we're going to go down Roford Road, which is really cool. It's paved now. It used to be all gravel, but now it's paved. So, we're going to go down that.

[00:31:50]And it's going to be a lot of nice turns and switchbacks. And it's going to go around uh Mystic Lake, which is really cool. And it's going to drop us into what's called Hill City. And then from there, we can go over to Keystone, Mount Rushmore. You know, we got a couple different directions we can go. So, this is going to be a lot of fun. And that's the great part about going to towns is we just go to towns wherever, however.

[00:32:16]But right now, we're linked up with a group of I don't know, 40 cars, probably, >> maybe even more. There's a bunch ahead of us. There's a bunch behind us.

[00:32:25]They're on different routes and routes and everything. Uh we'll all be converging on Mount Rushmore later at different times. Uh but this has been a lot of fun.

[00:33:38]just jumped out. We just landed in Hill City. We came down the back way and boop. Came into a fuel station here.

[00:33:44]We're going to fill up, go walk around, talk to some folks, kind of come up with the plan. A lot of these people haven't done the hills at all, which is a part of doing this. I want to move it all over the country to my favorite spots.

[00:33:55]So, I'm going to kind of come up with a plan to do Mount Rushmore, the Needles Highway, which is incredible, like handcarved tunnels and stuff. You'll get to see that obviously, and then we'll come back up through um the pigtails.

[00:34:10]So, let's go find some folks, kind of lay out a plan, see if we can keep this group going. But this isn't the only group traveling. There's groups all over the hills right now. But, it's fun in a group like this.

[00:35:58]So, we just went from Hill City to famous Keystone, South Dakota. This is another mining town. It was founded in 1883, and it's famous for its boardwalk. There was a lot of shopping and dining and things like that. And then it really changed in the 1920s with Mount Rushmore, which is right up over the hill here. That's going to be our next stop. But of course, we're going to explore first. Uh the ruby house is up here. It's really cool interior. We're going to go see Taffy Made. See if we can find some more dream catchers. And we have the 1880 train arriving right now at the depot over here. We uh just perfectly, you know, timed this out. A lot of planning went into to this shot right here, you know. No pure luck.

[00:36:53]Yeah. Actually, you know what's kind of cute is they do the Polar Express during the winter time. So, you can get your hot chocolate right on the train and it's all whimsical and cool. Really cold, but cool. So, >> corner over here on the back.

[00:39:21]Here we are. Mount Rushmore. Those heads up there were carved ropes sitting on wood things and a little bit of dynamite. Now, they look massive down here, but they're actually 60 ft tall each. Sixstory buildings, and the noses are 20 ft long. Here's something no one knows. See George Washington right there? Thomas Jefferson was actually being carved on this side of him. If you look close, you can kind of see the carving markings. And then they figured out the rock wasn't suitable and actually moved them on the other side. So, George Washington always wasn't going to be the first one.

[00:40:18]I didn't make that decision. I wasn't there that day. Okay. But this place is incredible. Actually, when I was a kid, I've been here 397.4 times. This was the parking lot. There was no fancy stuff and flags. And there was a walking trail where you could go down to a museum and see the picks and hammers and ddabs and whatnotss, but now it's a beautiful facility. And I could come here time and time again, and it's amazing each time. We're going to get a little bit closer, take some photographs, and then coming up next is Iron Mountain Road. And it's good. Real good.

[00:41:03]>> Guys, in the gift shop here, I found a belt that I just have to have. Mine's getting a little worn out, and this matches my leather person pouch perfectly. Speaking of leather persons, Mount Rushmore is really, really beautiful. But I have one more that is also incredible and significantly bigger. Crazy horse. It's about a 27, 30 minute drive from here. We're also going to go check that thing out. It is amazing. Let's hit the road. Got a belt, babe.

[00:42:00]So, here we are at the beautiful Crazy Horse Monument. That is Chief Crazy Horse back there. They chose, the Native Americans chose Crazy Horse because he never signed a treaty or ever touched a pen. Firm leader. Some Polish guy started this. Mike Wazowski or something. I can't remember his name. He passed away. He had 10 kids. So, I guess they're still up there carving. Or maybe not. Not really sure. You could probably You should probably fact check that. But anyway, let's go to the museum and get another dream catcher.

[00:43:01]Worth the price of admission. Okay, so we checked out Crazy Horse here. Here's what we're going to do. As the kids say, we're going to turn it up. So, we're going to leave. No matter how we do this, we got to come down the same road to get to Kuster, which is where we're going to end. I think what's happening is my friends are telling me when I decelerate or go down hills that the car smokes quite a bit, but it doesn't smoke under acceleration.

[01:03:02]Well, we just scooted through my favorite back roads from Kuster, South Dakota over to Interior South Dakota.

[01:03:14]It's now just a small ghost town on the map, but there's one of my favorite gas stations in South Dakota, the Cowboy Corner. I called them ahead of time this morning actually again and said, "I'm bringing like a hundred of my friends with me." And they about fainted. She called a friend to come in and help her run the till. Extremely thankful. And that's what going to town is about.

[01:03:36]Seeing all of the towns that you don't normally see unless you avoid those highways. Rural America, the people that actually built this country and all of the fantastic stuff that comes with it.

[01:03:47]We've seen so much history. We saw an abandoned rail line. They saw old farm equipment and cars and trucks and all the caddles and farmers and ranchers out here in the bad land still trying to survive in the bad land. We have taken over this town. The church is full. The streets are full. Whatever. This thing is full. That's the highways. This gas station is completely jam-packed. And what makes me even happier is there's two or three more of these groups somewhere floating around doing the same thing that we're doing, visiting these small businesses and towns. And it puts a big smile on my face. We're having so much fun. There's everything from conversion vans to campers to 40s and 50s cars to motorcycles and trikes to really shiny nice stuff. There's a Dodge Viper over there, new ZL1 Camaro, 70 Camaro. regular old just things they've revived from watching the show and it really fills my heart. We have not had a ounce of negativity or complaints or everyone is just overjoyed to be here and having fun and I'm humbled. It's my birthday today and this is the best present ever. I'm going to finish up my uh Dr. B pepper here. Eat some pickles. And then we're going to go up through the Badlands Park northwest to Wall. Get our free bumper sticker. It's a town founded on ice water. I'll explain that in a little bit. Then we're going to go to an 1880 town. They have I don't know how many buildings, but it's literally like stuff. And sure enough, as you see today, people come by the droves. Their business boomed and today their family basically owns Yes.

[01:33:52]We're pulling into Murdo in just a minute. This is going to be a lot of fun. And I've taken you guys here a couple times, but we're going to enjoy it again. We're going to beat everybody, hand out some owl awards, sign some things, take some pictures, and uh try not to get emotional, but this is a really humbling moment for me because this week has been week three days has been incredible. There's been zero complaints, zero negativity. Everyone's been just so kind and thankful and having a blast.
