Summerween reading vlog(reading only horror books for a week)

[00:00:03][music] [music] [music] It is like 90° outside. People are at lakes. They're at beaches. They're soaking up the sun. And me, I'm yearning for Halloween. I am yearning for fall.

[00:00:26]All I've been wanting to do is watch horror movies, horror shows, read some thrillers, read some horrors. I just want to be in Halloween. I want it to be fall already. I am over the sun. I am over the heat. I am not a summer girly.

[00:00:41]It is not meant for me. That life is not it. So, I decided to satiate my hunger and my yearning for Halloween by doing a little summer reading vlog. You know, pretty much declaring right now that it is Halloween in this household. I don't care if it's 90° outside. And right now, I don't know if you guys can hear, but it's also downpouring. It's thundering.

[00:01:01]It's storming. It is quite literally the perfect day to start this vlog because it's already putting me in that mood to read a thriller horror. And I'm so excited because it's really hard for me to find thrillers and horrors that I like. But something about Summerween and just like classic Halloween, like '8s slasher movies and stuff are my favorite. And that's kind of the vibe I was trying to go for when I was picking different books. When I think of summer, I think of either like '8s slasher or like some sort of like killer on the loose situation. Camps like summer camps, bonfires, carnivals. I do think of carnivals for sure. You guys know the vibe that I'm talking about. You guys know everything that it encompasses. So, I did try to pick my TBR kind of loosely based around that. I'm sure there's a couple thrown in there that aren't related to that. I don't really remember. I haven't looked at the list in a little bit. But, I did also pick like six books. We are probably not going to get through all of those books.

[00:01:52]I just wanted options for like mood reading purposes and everything. So, I decided why not have the best of both worlds. We could still enjoy summer and all that. It kind of like encompasses in that aesthetic with the carnivals and the ice cream and the the beaches and the water and the fun stuff of that aesthetic, but then also the horror, the Halloween, the fall, and that is summer.

[00:02:11]So, the real question is which book are we reading first? It was such a tough decision. The three that really are calling out to me the most is Joy Land, The Troop, and Clown in a Cornfield. I have a feeling those might be like the three that I definitely read in this video, but who knows, things may change.

[00:02:28]I really do think I want to read this one right now. This follows college student Devon. He took the summer job at Joyland, hoping to forget the girl who broke his heart, but he wound up facing something far more terrible. the legacy of vicious murders, the fate of a dying child, and dark truths about life, and what comes after that would change his world forever. It's a riveting story about love and loss, growing up and growing old, and about those who don't get to do it either because death comes for them before their time. Joyand is Stephen King at the peak of his storytelling powers. Joyand is a mystery, a horror story, and a bittersweet coming of age novel. I'm excited. I really hope this gives me the vibes that I'm looking for. We're going to get started with this.

[00:03:16]I feel like we should do it now just to like I don't know. I feel like the cookies with the rainy stormy vibe, it just like works.

[00:03:40][music] [music] [music] >> [music] [music] [music] >> I'm about 55 pages into Joy. boy land and I am actually enjoying it so much so far. This book opens up with Devon and he's kind of like recounting his life essentially and his time at Joyland. I forget what year it currently is, but he's looking back on 1973 like how he got the job and just like literally his life. We just learned about the haunted house where a murder occurred and he hasn't started officially there yet. he got hired and he's like getting everything situated and I think he's going to be starting soon. Really enjoying it. I love like the way that this is set up and it's written and I love that it's going back and forth between his thoughts in the present day and like the story from the '7s. I think it's fun because it's like he's telling a story but then he makes little comments of what is coming up or it's like oh but we'll get more into that later. Like I like the way that it's like a story within a story. It's very fun.

[00:05:41]The line in this book says that he pulled the lever all the way up and I went, "Pull the lever, crunk."

[00:05:48]I know that's not very summerween aesthetic of me, but I just had to tell you I'm about 100 pages in now. I really am enjoying this so much and the writing, which obviously it's Stephen King. I knew I was going to like the writing, but I am enjoying it. We haven't really gotten to like any of the that aspect yet of it, horror, thriller, anything like that. We've mostly just been like getting to learn Joy Land and his experience there. He was learning the different rides and putting on the mascot suit for the first time and everything. I think this is where the story is probably going to start taking its turn. But I also don't know how much this really classifies as a horror.

[00:06:28][music] [music] >> [music] [music] >> It's the next day. I just finished Joyand by Stephven King. And this was such a good book. I think I'm going to rate it a 4.5. I do want to let you know that it's not like a traditional Stephen King like horror book. I feel like when you think of Stephen King, you you really think of like horror books and whatnot. It's definitely not anything in that sense. I don't know if it technically gives off the vibes that I was looking for when I started this video. However, I don't regret reading it. This is more of just like a a coming of age story like it does say in the back and like a thriller mystery more so on the mystery aspect. It's kind of like a detective story while you're also reading about this guy kind of figuring out his place and just experiencing the year with him. But I loved it so much.

[00:07:47]It was so like bittersweet. It was so enjoyable. I think the cover is definitely misleading because I thought there was going to be more like spooky things happening at this amusement park and really there was nothing besides rumors of the horror house being haunted. It wasn't anything like that.

[00:08:02]You really don't even start getting into the whole like murder situation until the last 100 pages. That's when he starts questioning like who it could be.

[00:08:10]They start kind of investigating it more. Again, I enjoyed it so much that I'm not even mad about it and I loved it. And this is from the library. I actually did order a copy off Pango because I do want a copy for my shelves because I really did like this book. I enjoyed it so so much and I think the writing was amazing. It was so immersive. I literally felt like I was there in the story. I felt like I was at the amusement park. I felt like I was experiencing all of these things. Yeah, I didn't even mind when it was like slow and not like the horror vibes. I didn't mind at all because I was enjoying the story and I was enjoying the main character so much. So, I absolutely would still recommend it. However, if you're looking for something that is like summerween or like Halloween or horror, this is more just a fun coming of age story, like I said, with some like investigating elements. Honestly, it would kind of fit good for Summerween because it does have like the summer coastal vibes and the amusement park.

[00:09:05]Just don't go into expecting the murderer to be going around slashing people. I don't think I'm going to start another book tonight because it's already 9:30 and I've been going to bed so late every day. So, I'm kind of like in the mood to get ready for bed right now and everything. If you hear that, people are already setting off fireworks and it's not even the 4th of July yet.

[00:09:24]We still have a couple days, whatever. I I do think the next book that I'm going to start tomorrow is going to be Clown in a Cornfield. I also had that as the book club option just cuz I knew I really wanted to read it and I think it's going to win. I'll know by tomorrow, but I hope that's the winner cuz then it's like I'm knocking out two things at once, you know? We'll kind of go over that tomorrow. talk about the synopsis and then go from there. I did also order another book, so we'll see if that ends up getting read in this vlog or not. It really just depends like if I keep reading really good books, then I'm going to want to keep reading. I'm really hoping to get to at least four books in this video, but it really depends on how much I can knock out in the week or if I decide to make this a little longer. So far, the first one was a 4.5 star. Had a good time and I will chat with you guys tomorrow. Today's the day that we're going to be starting Clown in a Cornfield. I probably look ridiculous because my hair has been like this all day. I didn't feel like redoing it for the video. Anyways, we're going to do Clown in a Cornfield and I think I'm going to make some popcorn. I might try to spookify it a little bit. I'm going to pull up the synopsis so I can read to you what it's about. I think it's about a girl that like moves to a town and there's like a a serial killer as a clown, I'm pretty sure, or I don't know if he's like a paranormal like entity like Penny Wise or if it's like a serial killer dressed as a clown.

[00:10:40]follows Quinn says she just wants to make it to graduation. She might not make it to morning when her and her father moved to a tiny town with a weird clown for a mascot. Oh, most of the town believes the kids are to blame. Juniors and seniors are the ones who threw the party where Arthur Hill's daughter died.

[00:10:55]They're the ones who set the abandoned factory on fire and spend all their times posting pranks on YouTube. They have no respect and no idea what it means to work hard for the kids the other way around. And now it's kind of constant battle between tradition and progress until one homicidal clown with a pork pie hat and a red nose decides to end it for good because if your opponents all die, you win the debate.

[00:11:16]Okay. Kind of sounds like, you know, just like a PG rated like Netflix original movie essentially. Hopefully it'll be good. Let's go make our popcorn and get situated and yeah, we will we will start from there. I did also get this in the mail. So, I've heard really good things about this and this is in every Summerween Tik Tok that I saw. And I forgot about this book. It was on my TBR and then I totally forgot about it. So, I ended up getting it. I still really want to read The Troop in this video.

[00:11:46]So, I probably going to try to read The Troop and then this. And I feel like that'll be the end of this video. And I also going to say really quick that this video is probably going to take longer than the week because I am off Friday, but I ended up making plans. And I also made plans tomorrow. I had plans today, I have plans Saturday, and I have plans Sunday. Everybody this week wants to hang out, apparently. So, this video will probably take longer than the week.

[00:12:44]I am on chapter I think the towards the end of chapter 3, I'm pretty sure in Clown and Cornfield. Didn't make it very far because I was pretty tired. I actually am enjoying it so far. I also feel like this is such like a niche thing to point out, but I do really like how she's very open-minded about this move and not treating her dad like [ __ ] because I feel like anytime you watch or read or any media where it's like a teenager having to move, they're just like a little [ __ ] the entire time.

[00:13:15]They're rude to their parents, they're miserable, they're complaining, and she's being very open-minded like, "Oh, this is unfortunate. I miss my friends, but my dad's trying. The town has potential. the house is decent. You know what I mean? I know that's such a silly thing to point out, but I just like can appreciate that. I'm at the part where she's at her first day of school and this teacher is like on an insane power trip. Don't think that he should be talking to the kids the way that he's talking to them. How depending I I don't know what they did yet. I don't really know anything. I just know that they're YouTubers and they pull pranks on the town. I don't know at what point it starts to get into the the clown aspect and everything, but I am having a really good time with it and imagining the city that she's in and everything. So, I'm liking it so far. I would say right now, again, I'm literally three chapters into it. I would say like a three 3.5 so far.

[00:14:07]When we get further into it, I'll know more. So, I don't know how much time I'm going to be able to read today. Well, tonight when I get off, I can definitely read. I am going to also read on my lunch break. I just don't know how much of that I'm going to film. So, I will just check back in whenever I have more to say. [00:14:37]The people in this town, the adults are I feel like they're like [ __ ] Granted, these kids are probably doing like shitty things. I don't really know. Most of their pranks seem harmless and they just accidentally spiral out of control. So, like I understand being mad about it, but the way they're acting is like insane. I also feel like the way they're portraying the small town is for a reason because the type of people that seem like they're in this town are seemingly to be the racist, grumpy, terrible type of people. And I'm sure that's going to somehow come into play just based on how they're acting. It's one thing to be like, "Oh man, [ __ ] them kids." But it feels like they literally have a vendetta against these kids and they're like the teacher on that power trip and they just had this like town hall meeting or town meeting, whatever it's called, where I'm just like, "These are still kids that you guys are talking about." The sheriff like literally like threw this girl to the ground that I don't know. I'm really intrigued. Oh, and we just had our first murder.

[00:16:53]So, if I'm repeating myself, so sorry.

[00:16:56]But I did finish it. I rated it a 3.5.

[00:16:58]Also, I just washed my hair. That's why I look like this. I thought that was so fun and way more graphic than I thought it was going to be for like a YA novel.

[00:17:08]I thought it would be more closed door slasher stuff, but it was pretty like graphic in that sense. It was really enjoyable and I was so gagged by it and what the outcome was. I was so shocked by that. I definitely recommend that if you're looking for like a fun summer ween or spooky read during Halloween or any time in general. I really really enjoyed it. But now we are moving on to the troop. This is such an anticipated read. So I will be so let down if it's not at least a four-st star. This is about a group of like boy scouts and they go camping on an island, I think, and it's like a tradition that they do and there's an unexpected intruder that stumbles upon their campsite. Shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungry. They're exposed to something far more frightening than any tale of terror. The human carrier of a bio-engineered nightmare. A hor a horror that spreads faster than fear. And it's a harrowing struggle for survival with no escape from the elements, the infected or one another. When I think of summerween, I do love a good camping or summer camp type situation. I think that really sets the mood. Like a camp thing or a carnival or an amusement park, like something that screams summer, but then the horrors persist, you know? Hopefully this gives me everything that I do want.

[00:19:56]I'm going to put on something to kind of have playing in the background. Probably maybe American Horror Story. Uh I think it was like 1984 or whatever that season was. I thought that season was so fun and like campy.

[00:20:08]So maybe I'll put that on because I don't want to put on something that's going to distract me. It's got to be something I've already seen. And we're going to keep reading. I'm only on chapter 2. I have not made much progress to say anything about it. I'm just very intrigued. Honestly, that's all that's all I can say about it right now.

[00:20:39][music] Wow. I'm literally only 22 pages into this book and it's starting with the bang. The man is already on the island for some reason. I thought we were like leading up to this. I didn't know that it was already starting with the scouts on the island. I thought there was going to be more of a buildup and then we were going to go to the island and then they were going to be there for a bit and then he was going to come. We are jumping right in. So, I don't know how these 300 and something pages are going to like are these 300 and something pages going to be them just fighting for their life this whole time because and the the writing of this is so insanely descriptive.

[00:21:12]The way that he is describing this man, if you can even call it a man, is so insane. I'll just read you like a small part of it, but just know like the entire book feels like it's written like this already. A quivering string of drool, spooled over his lip, hung, snap.

[00:21:27]His skin was stretched thin as crepe paper over his skull. Capillaries wormed across his nose, over his cheeks, and down his neck like river routes on a topographical map. His arms jutted from his t-shirt like tinker toys. The skin was shrink wrapped around the radius in a bones, giving his elbows the appearance of knots in a rope. That's just like an insane way to describe somebody. We are literally getting right into it. He is already at the camp. He is talking question mark talking to the scout master right now. I'm so intrigued how we're about to fill all of these pages. I'm scared. Good morning. It is the next day. We do have our coffee.

[00:22:07]Well, that's not that cute of an angle, but that's just what we're going to have to deal with. I did not get as far as I was hoping to get. I got to chapter 12.

[00:22:16]I was really hoping to get here where I marked it, which was chapter 18, but I just got really tired. And honestly, it's not bad. It's 76 pages in. I'm just like so shocked with how fast it started. We haven't really gotten to anything super crazy yet, obviously, but I was telling you yesterday, he's already in the campground and everything, and they're just trying to figure out like what's wrong with him.

[00:22:40]So, I'm excited, but I'm like kind of nervous cuz I was looking at the reviews and everybody's like, "Oh my god, this book is like gross. Like, it's so good, but like the body horror and everything, like it's disgusting." And I'm like, "Oh god, what did I get myself involved in?"

[00:22:57][music] [music] Starting to eat my lunch and decided I would read a little bit. No. I feel like this is not a book that I can like eat and read at the same time cuz it's like making me kind of nauseous. [music] This book is disgusting, but I love it. It's so gross. And like the body horror and like the descriptions, it's so gross, but I can't stop.

[00:23:56]It's like the body horror and the way that things are described.

[00:24:01]It's so disgusting, but I'm so intrigued. It's like giving me the heeie-jeebies. But I don't mind it because I do I like the feeling that I'm getting from this book in the sense of like being freaked out. It takes a lot for a book to do that. But oh my god, it's just it's a lot sometimes. Oh god.

[00:24:20]I love the like article aspects too because it's so fascinating seeing what is happening in the lab and like the article. I don't know if they're articles, what news thing, whatever they are. It's so fascinating. He said he opened a genetic Pandora's box. And yeah, the descriptions are insane. But I love that we're seeing what's happening in real time and then also going back to how this thing was created or whatever.

[00:24:49]It's really hard because of the fact that it is so disgusting to be like, "Hey, I'm enjoying this." Because it's also really disgusting. If you are okay with stuff like that, like it's it's a very fascinating story. just know going into this that there is talk about animal abuse. Chapter 27 specifically, I skipped I skipped a couple pages of it and um I'm starting back up where it says Shelly walked because I'm pretty sure it's talking about him doing something to an animal. And I don't want to read that. I don't want to read that.

[00:25:26]And I get that it's because this kid is [ __ ] up, but I just don't want to [ __ ] read that. So, I just wanted to give you guys a warning if anybody is interested in reading that chapter 27. I would skip part of it. I was going to skip the whole chapter, but in a quick skim, I did see that this is them back on the island or whatever. So, hopefully there's not more of that. But judging by the way this kid is, I don't want to read that. So, just in case somebody else feels that way, if I wasn't interested in the story and how it goes, I probably wouldn't keep continuing out of fear of there being more of it. But I am very intrigued in the story and I feel like there's not going to be any more of it. I feel like now we're getting more towards like what's actually happening on the island. It's one of the flashback moments with Shelly. So, just know that. And just know honestly, if you get any flashback moments with Shelly, it might have something like that. So, apparently, according to Reddit, chapter 27 and also chapter 30, there's an incident. So, I'm considering just skipping those chapters.

[00:26:28]And if I miss something important, I hope that like I can piece it together.

[00:26:32]Even chapter 27, I'm reading the part with the island, and it's not I'm not missing anything. I honestly am considering just skipping that chapter, chapter 30, and hope that I don't miss anything crucial to the plot. I get the author's like really trying to set the scene of I mean, the book is gross. It's like I can't even sit here and act like everything else about the book has been normal. And he's trying to set the scene, like I said, of this [ __ ] up kid. I just like don't I don't like reading stuff like that. Yeah, someone made a valid point. They're like, I already know that character is awful, so I don't need to read that bit to confirm it, and I didn't miss any of the plot by skipping it. Okay, so there you go. Just skip just skip those chapters.

I for some reason thought that they were like from the past them creating this thing and then you know what I mean the articles are current/future and you're reading that they're recounting what's happening and normally the chapter like prior or after is the POVs of the kids on the island so it's like current with the story I think I just thought it was in the past because at first it was just talking about the creation of this thing. We are going to start the last book in this vlog and it is My Best Friend's Exorcism, which wasn't originally one of the options, but I ended up ordering it because I feel like I see this book in every Summerween video. And also, I have been wanting this book for a while because I think the cover is just so cool and fun, and I love the style. And this just screams like the perfect summer book to read or even Halloween book. This follows high school sophomores Abby and Gretchen. They've been best friends since fourth grade.

[00:28:22]But after an evening of skinny dipping goes wrong, Gretchen begins to act different. She's moody, irritable.

[00:28:30]Low key, she kind of sounds kind of sounds like me, but okay. A bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she's nearby. Uh Aby's investigation leads to some startling discoveries. By the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question. Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

[00:28:53]All right, we are going to go ahead and start this tonight. I'm trying to think of like a fun snack. I feel like I don't have anything fun anymore. And the first half of this video was so fun. There's nothing that I can think of right now. I might just eat some carrots and hummus.

[00:29:07]Like, [clears throat] spooky carrots. I don't know. Whatever is the hummus of choice today. Absolutely delicious.

[00:29:21][laughter] The dedication says for Amanda who knows the reason why. But down here it says, "But if she doesn't, I would suggest she have her attorney consult both protective orders filed against her, the criminal complaint, which outlines these reasons in great detail and maybe also her conscience because disclosing the whereabouts of the bodies will finally bring some kind of closure for my family." I think if I remember correctly, I heard that this author does that like with all of his dedications, he just puts some crazy outlandish like [ __ ] [snorts] but that's really funny.

[00:29:59][music] I am just realizing that I don't think I ever updated you guys on my thoughts on the troop. I don't think I ever gave my review for that. So, we're going to quickly go over that before we get back into My Best Friend's Exorcism. I That was a deeply disturbing book. I was genuinely squeamish, disgusted. It's a disgusting book, but I did I did rate it four stars because it takes a lot, I think, for a horror book or thriller book or whatever to actually freak me out. And it did that. I literally had the ick the entire time, but the writing was so detailed and graphic and descriptive and done really, really well that I enjoyed it, but also I didn't enjoy it. I don't know if that makes sense, but it did its job.

[00:30:51]The only thing I will say are the two chapters that have the animal torture and cruelty that I was talking about earlier. I did skip those. I don't think it did anything as far as for the plot.

[00:31:04]I don't think we needed it. I don't think we needed any proof to show that he's a terrible person because I feel like we already knew that. It didn't those chapters didn't have anything major to the actual plot anyway. So, it didn't matter if you skipped it. So, I definitely skipped them. But yeah, if you definitely want a book that's really going to disturb you, I would read that.

[00:31:22]I did rate it four stars. But My Best Friend's Exorcism, we are on page 78.

[00:31:28]I'm on the chapter, it's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine. It definitely was like a little slower to start, but obviously they have to set up the friendship and all of that. The only thing I will say that I don't like about this book is I feel like there's a lot of like racist undertones.

[00:31:45]And I understand that the author is trying to set the scene of like the '8s in the South, but I don't think we needed that. Like we did not need that.

[00:31:53]We we can know. We can figure that out on our own. We we know. I just feel like there were some comments that weren't really needed and it kind of like I don't know. I just don't think we needed that. But the rest of the story so far is pretty good. I think things are starting to take the turn. They did acid and went skinny dipping and she went missing for the entire night and then they found her and now she's kind of having these like weird like she's seeing things and stuff. So, I think we're kind of getting closer to that spot. I am a little curious about the dog. I just feel like when a book emphasizes an animal so much, I'm like scared. Especially because I know in like exorcism movies, paranormal movies, like there is always an animal that is injured. Demons hate animals apparently. So, I'm a little nervous about that. Might have to look that up because at that point, we're going to be two for two on books here with harming animals. don't really have many thoughts yet on this besides the fact that it's slow and then the the comments that we didn't need, but I'm intrigued. I'm very intrigued by their friendship. I'm intrigued how this is all going to go down. I think it opened really really great with her in the future. So, I guess we're just going to keep reading and go from there.

[00:33:19]Oh my god, I love books where you like are following the downfall of somebody.

[00:33:25]That sounds terrible, but like watching them like transcend into the craziness.

[00:33:30]It's just so fascinating. It kind of reminds me of um Headful of Ghosts, I think was the name of the book I read a while ago by Paul Trembley, Trembley, whatever. I think this kind of like gives me those same vibes. I don't know if this is gonna have the same theme as that. [music] [music] I hope the lighting isn't too chaotic, too terrible. I left my ring light in my bedroom and I really just don't feel like getting it. I am on page 210. She blinded me with science. And I actually really hope I can finish today because I'm enjoying this so much more. When I first started it, I was like, "Ooh, I don't know. I'm uncomfortable with the things being talked about. I don't think I'm going to like this." And I found myself all night laying in bed thinking about it. Not all night.

[00:34:28]Obviously, I fell asleep, but like I was laying in bed and I was like, I can't wait to pick this back up because the way it's written, it feels like a movie.

[00:34:36]The way it's playing out, like I am literally envisioning everything happening as a movie. I do want to watch it after, but I haven't heard anyone talk about it. So, I don't know if it's one of those adaptations that nobody really knew about or if it just wasn't good. I don't know, but I will be watching it. But I'm so intrigued. And the parts where she is talking, I don't want to like give it away. I can't I can't say anything. But it's it's really good and I'm having a good time. And it's honestly, it's crazy to watch a switch up with everybody. Her parents are insane. So, I think I get why it was kind of painting the picture of the town because our parents are also just insane. It's really good. So, I I'm hoping to finish it today. We only have, let's see, 3:32.

[00:35:54][clears throat] Wow. Okay. Just for anybody else who also wants to skip the chapter with the animal scene, I'm going to put I'm going to tell you the chapter right now. If for some reason you don't want to skip that and you don't want spoilers, then skip forward like a minute. But uh if you do want to skip that chapter, like if you do want to read that book, the chapter is hard in my heart, which I'm on right now, but I looked up the exact pages just so I know. Uh the pages that you can skip, according to this person on Reddit, is page 270 through 272. Pretty much the second you see Good Boy Max written and she's going up to the bedroom, that's what you can skip. This is so good. I don't know how this went from being so unsure about it to all of a sudden being so good.

I did rate that 4.5 stars. It ended up being so much fun. I had such a good time with it and I did not think I was going to because of the weird comments in the beginning and it was just kind of slow at first, but I ended up really really liking it. There was times that it was super like campy and the whole like Phil Collins and the exorcism scene in general was kind of silly at certain parts, but it was great. I will say, however, do not watch the movie. It was the worst adaptation I have ever seen from a book. It was such a bad adaptation. I don't know what they I don't know what they did, but don't watch it. I did have such a good time with this video, and I hope that you guys did, too. I hope that it was fun and immersive. I was trying to make it more fun so you're not always just sitting there watching me read.
