Optically active compounds are of two types: enantiomers (mirror images that are non-superimposable) and diastereomers (stereoisomers that are not mirror images). Compounds can be optically inactive due to internal compensation (meso compounds with a plane of symmetry where 50% of the molecule rotates light right and 50% left, canceling out) or external compensation (racemic mixtures containing equal amounts of enantiomers). Stereochemical reactions involve retention (same spatial arrangement) or inversion (opposite spatial arrangement) of configuration, and when both occur equally, racemization produces an optically inactive mixture.
