True humility is a deliberate self-deprecation founded on the truthful perception of one's own condition and frailty, not on exaggeration or pretending to be worse than one actually is; it involves recognizing that all gifts come from God and that we have nothing to take credit for, which leads to genuine happiness through knowledge of the supreme truth and love of the supreme good.

FALSE Humility, the Enemy of True Humility
Added:Humility and its [snorts] divisions.
True happiness is found in knowledge of the supreme truth.
Love of the supreme good and possession of eternal joy.
Happiness true happiness is found in knowledge of the supreme truth.
Love of the supreme good and possession of eternal joy.
And you'll notice when people get confused it's cuz they don't they're actually confused on something that's true.
You see when people get they get confused they get worried they get anxious because they actually don't understand something. So knowledge of the supreme truth, love of the supreme good and possession of eternal joy.
That's the uh that's where true happiness comes from.
The virtues are to lead us uh there too.
And consequently the more perfectly a man is established in virtue the more will true happiness be within his reach.
And there you can see today why people aren't happy because you don't see people that have virtue. You don't see virtue.
Another reason why you see people falling into so many uh sexual sins.
Because they're seeking a happiness just through some but it actually just gets worse and worse more degraded more degraded.
Till the whole culture [clears throat] is degraded.
As the purpose of charity is to lead us towards the good so that of humility is to lead us towards the truth.
As the purpose of charity is to lead us towards the good so that of humility is to lead us towards the truth.
Humility says Hugh of Saint Victor >> [snorts] [clears throat] >> is a deliberate uh is a is a deliberate deprecation of self found on the perception of one's own condition and frailty.
See how precise they tried to be?
Now we just say silly things.
It is a deliberate depreciation.
Humility is a deliberate depreciation of self founded on the perception of one owns condition and frailty.
But you can't take this deliberate uh depreciation too far like what we talked about before. It's It's It's It's vain pride to go around saying how dumb you are and just how bad you are at everything.
You get this from women all the time.
And then they get mad if you say, "I know."
And then they say, "Well, you shouldn't have said it." You're the one that said it. I'm just agreeing.
I you think you'd be happy cuz I'm finally agreeing with you, but you now you're upset.
But you get it from anybody. That's just the vain that vain uh it'll it'll tend to do that. Just keep showing how humble you are um and the whole [snorts] reasons you're you're you're not. So so it isn't an exaggeration, this deliberate depreciation.
Um it's it's a deliberately finding the the truth in yourself. Like it's not trying to think of some creative ways why you're just dirt.
And you're you're not you're not dirt.
God didn't create I mean you you came from the dirt, but you're not dirt.
That's the thing like So God God creates us and he made everything that he made was good. And there's an understanding in that. So it's the same thing like if you're good at something and you know you're good at something, >> [snorts] >> to go around saying how bad you are at that thing is absolutely ridiculous.
And everybody knows it's absolutely ridiculous cuz you just want them to say "It's not true. You are good at that thing. You are good at that thing. Stop saying that." And you're like, "No, it's not. I'm just not. I'm just not, okay?"
Oh, heavens.
So, as a religious when you hear people say that, you just look at them funny and go, "Yeah, I got I got other stuff to do, all right?"
So, this self this deliberate depreciation of self it's founded on the perception of one's own condition and frailty. Which means we do make mistakes.
We do mess stuff up.
Um we know that when we have a talent, it doesn't usually come from us. It's something we're just kind of able to do.
And so, we we invest more time into that thing we're able to do.
So, why do you take pride in that thing that you've just kind of been given to do?
Do you see? It'd be different if you were the worst, like you had no ability to write whatsoever, and somehow you taught yourself, maybe not write, but draw or something.
And then you taught yourself how to do it, you took all this time to like draw lines, draw lines, draw lines, then curves, then curves, then curves, and next thing you know, you you you're able to do like the Sistine Chapel.
Um there there's maybe there's something to be said there, like this guy, he spent his whole life like making sure he could do do this right. He really did a good job. But still, you can't do it without grace.
So, because because that's our condition, we still know that we we have to find it has to be founded on it's basically founded on truth. See, humility and truth. It's founded on truth.
Not this stupid stupid ridiculous stuff of like just trying to act like you're not good at something you're good at.
Saint Bernard describes it as that true knowledge of self that makes a man of no account in his own eyes. There you go.
>> [clears throat] >> That true knowledge.
See the link? It's always a link with humility, [clears throat] there's a link with truth.
That's why what we're mocking, it's not linked to truth, it's a lie.
It's just it's a it's a it's vanity.
And they're feeding their pride. They want to feed their pride. Then they get mad because you don't tell them how great they are at stuff they say they're bad at.
That true knowledge of self that makes a man of no account in his own eyes.
Do you see that? So, because he has that gift other people see that he he has a wonderful gift.
But he knows that gift doesn't really come from him. So, he has no account of himself in his own eyes. He's not there He's not there trying to act like he doesn't have that gift.
He has the gift. But he didn't do anything to He just has that gift. Do you see?
So, [snorts] we don't we don't go around like you don't go and puff yourself up cuz you know how to do a certain thing. You you just know that you never had to or it's just you've always been good at that thing. There you go, God gave it to you. So, in know he's he makes little of of himself in his own eyes because he knows he's not really That's where St. Francis comes saying he was such a great sinner because he was St. Francis like the the holiest guy on the earth at the time. And >> [clears throat] >> he's even given the stigmata. I mean, St. Francis to this day's one of the greatest saints ever in the church and some would say the greatest.
And and how could that be that in his own eyes he he thought little of himself?
Because he knew it was the work of God.
It wasn't he didn't do much. And if if he would have cooperated more, he he would have actually done something greater. Because the the problem with St. Francis in St. Francis's eyes is that St. Francis didn't cooperate enough with God.
Do you see? That's why in his own eyes he thought himself a great sinner.
But now people today they like to put on St. Francis. He was a he was a big sinner, we're big sinners. They they like to find thing that kind of uh what was something we read the other day? It's like those things that are alike that kind of like come together.
That's why you see people that on Sunday you'll see three people driving different Porsches behind each other in a line. I don't know if you know this, I tried to drive behind them for a while.
Whenever they would change lanes, I would change lanes and get back.
>> [snorts] >> So, we were kind of like the duck with the with the or the geese with the chickens.
We were a big white goose with a bunch of red chickens.
>> [snorts] >> Thus, the consideration of two facts admonishes us to be humble.
What we are and what we are not. What we are and what we are not.
>> [snorts] >> As for what we are, here we find nothing due to any personal merits. We find not and that's why it's wrong for us what what when we find what we are to sit there and exaggerate and try to say we're not that thing, you're lying.
It's not just vanity and pride, you're lying.
And you're lying about something that God gave you.
Do you see?
God [clears throat] gave you this gift and you're saying you're no good at that. It's a lie. Here we find nothing due to any personal merit of our own.
No [clears throat] good for which we may take all the credit to ourselves seeing that whatever there may be is due to the active goodness of another.
By his grace, we are what we are.
And so, on him alone is praise to be bestowed. Do you see that?
But [clears throat] you don't have to go so exaggerated other than if any as well as as long as whenever somebody says something nice to you, "Glory be to God. It's all God. It's not nothing me.
It's all God."
I mean, that's just too much, too. It's too much. As I just say, "Thank you.
Blessed be God."
You you you don't have to go on and on and on about oh, it's all God. It's all God. It's nothing me. Nothing me. I didn't do anything. It's all the You you meet these people and they go on and on like this and you're like well, I'm not going to say anything to them anymore.
This person's nuts.
So, it is it does have to be directed to God. Praise be God. You don't have to say anything else. Blessed [clears throat] be God.
But you don't have to go on and on and on about how it's nothing you. You don't do anything. No, nature grace works on nature.
God gave you something and then you also have to put in something too. But we we do realize that all of it kind of comes from God.
But my will has to cooperate and act with him.
Okay, we're not robots.
Such is the humility of the saints and of all those who are truly great.
The more they see themselves uh to possess the more do they humble themselves referring all to him from whom all has come.
>> [clears throat] >> He who attributes anything to himself is guilty of a kind of theft.
And God who has simply lent to us what we have shows his displeasure at such an attitude by the lips of the prophet Isaiah saying, "I will not give my glory to another."
And remember what happened to Herod.
Remember? He gave that oration. He dressed up in all his fancy clothes.
It's in the Bible.
It's in the Bible.
Um it's in the it's in the Acts of the Apostles. So, Herod after he after he um you know, he captures Peter, then Peter gets released.
Um then he kills the guards. Then he goes down to where was it? Samaria.
And gives this great oration in all of his fine clothing and stuff like that and they say, "It's not a man, it's a god. He's the voice of a god." So, they're they're this is what their recording sounds So, then they they you know, they're praising him and because the scripture says because he didn't give glory to God, God smoked him.
And he was eaten with worms. It's fantastic to hear. But God smote him and he was eaten by worms. It's the same thing that killed Valerian.
One of the one of the four emperors of the time of Diocletian. [clears throat] No, no, I'm sorry. Valerian was later on. I forget what his name was. He was a He was the bad guy. His His mom was a priestess and a horrible kind of cultish pagan wretched thing. And he was a very bad guy, but he's the one that Constantine fled from, but he eventually was eaten by worms, too.
Yeah, he he was a he was a horrible persecutor of the church. Filthy man, just a terrible man.
Anyways, so anyways, that's if we don't give that that as Isaiah talks about it, but then you also have that that that incredible instance in the Acts of the Apostles.
He continues, "Of his goodness he makes us free of much and the end the glory he retains for himself." Do you see? That's where the truth comes in like God God God's allowed to if we say we're servants of God and people might say, "Well, that's proud to say you're a servant of God." Listen, I'm baptized, all right? That's what That's what people that are baptized are. We're supposed to be servants of God. So, it's not it's not something wrong to say that I'm a servant of God. It It's wrong to say you're baptized, you're confirmed, you're a member of his church and you're not a servant of God.
It's like You need You need to live according to what you actually are. We made promises.
And according to our baptism, we're servants of God. That means we actually have to live as God's servants.
But he gives his servants something and we should give it back by using it as best we can. Just remember the parable when he talks about the talents.
You see, it's a it's interesting that the word for that money stuff is called talents.
I haven't done a study on it, but I don't know if in the English translation it's being used because of talents or if it's completely different word, but at least it sounds directly like talents.
You You looked at it.
>> I haven't looked at it up, but I think that's I'm pretty sure the reason we say like I'm I have talents, I'm talented is because it's referring [clears throat] to that gospel parable.
>> And so you have to make good on and give back. That's the whole thing.
If it were just money, we wouldn't be thinking of any of this.
>> [snorts] >> As for what we are not, here too, humility is imperative.
How false and empty is the show of glory which lacks all real foundation.
It is as though mud should uh should uh plume itself as gold.
A gnat pass for a giant. You know the sad little stupid dogs people like to have, those little ones from the Taco Bell commercials? I don't know if they still do that. When I was a kid, they had Taco Bell commercials and they had this little dog in there.
Cuz I think he's from Chihuahua.
Chihuahua's in Mexico, so it's that they named the dog Chihuahua.
But anyways, this little tiny dog, >> [snorts] >> if you get him near a giant dog, he'll just keep trying to bite him.
He'll like show his teeth and get all and then he'll just try to attack the really big giant dog. And the giant dog doesn't know he's there. Um but then the giant dog gets afraid of him whatever cuz the little tiny little tiny beast on the ground.
My parents have one of those little beasts or had. I don't know if it's still alive. Hopefully it's not, but uh you know, wear sandals. And so when I was in their house, the thing would just keep trying to bite my toes. And I I was like, "I'm sorry. If I kick or step on the dog, it I just feel bad." Uh but it's trying to bite my toes and every time I step, it's underneath my feet and I can't see it cuz it's super duper tiny. But it has this idea that it's a giant and can kill everybody or it's a dragon. Maybe it thinks it's a dragon, but um that's the thing.
Perfect example of the stupid little dog from the Taco Bell commercial.
>> [gasps] >> A beggar or a beggar fancying himself as a king >> [clears throat] >> or or an Ethiopian Snow White.
>> I'm going to get in trouble today.
Goodness gracious.
>> And this is from the 1200s. I'm not saying anything.
Thou sayeth, "I am rich, wealthy, and have need of nothing."
And knoweth not that thou art wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. Apocalypse 3:17.
That's our Lord speaking there.
This humility finds a place in uh lesser and imperfect souls.
They reflect [snorts] upon their many needs and imperfections, contrast their condition with the holiness of others, sink down into themselves, and finally acquiesce in the recognition, true enough, certainly, that they are poor creatures indeed.
But our Lord comes to enlighten us.
Born as we are in ignorant blindness both of ourselves and of God, he takes the clay of which we are made and transfuses it with light.
It's beautiful.
Much as he took clay and laid it on the sightless eyes of the blind man >> [snorts] >> whom he would cure. John 9 uh 1 and following.
Thus we come first of all to know ourselves and then to recognize and adore him from whom all light has come.
Out from clay came light to him who who had humbly acknowledged his own sad lot lot.
Humility should influence us in three ways.
It should determine our attitude towards ourselves, towards our neighbor, and towards God.
And you might say, "Why doesn't say from God, ourself, and our neighbor?"
Um I think probably because it starts first with the material and moves to the spiritual, right?
Cuz we we learn and understand things first through ourselves and then we kind of move outward. We don't learn from outward and then learn inward. We do in some things, but for even when he talks about the very beginning of this book, first we'll start with that's David of Augsburg. First we'll start with the um we start with the material >> [clears throat] >> and the in in the material material and the exterior. And then we move to the the supernatural and the interior. Do you see? That's the process that he's going through. That's why he uses that that arrangement. It should determine our attitude towards ourselves, drawing from the thought of our own nothingness, the recognition that we are despicable indeed, acknowledging to ourselves how much in us is is very unworthy.
And frankly, facing our nature or fortuitous defects.
And especially our faults and sins.
Thus in humility thus is humility retained.
Then humility >> [snorts] >> should show itself in our manners. That is, our whole demeanor and especially our conversation should be marked by humility.
Not just this this sampling of showing people that we're humble.
Just think about it.
You take you take opportunities to show people how humble humble you are sometimes.
It doesn't make any sense.
So, if you're one of those people that's just always trying to show people how humble you are without being humble. As one morning, says Psalm 34:14, as one mourning and sorrowing, as so so was I humbled.
People hate it in the world when they face a humiliation because it actually I've talked about before it feels like you're dying. And that's why people get really upset and then they'll stay upset for a long time and then they'll go into this big funk and then they'll stay in that kind of depressed funk for a long time and then then they get confused.
And what the spiritual authors always refer to that funk as is like a um confusion. You get more and more confused. Why?
Because you're proud. It's eating away at your pride. It's like eat It's the worms eating you alive and there has to be death.
Do you see? There has to be death cuz if there isn't death, there will be no humility born of it because you're just you're filthy proud. You're you you you you're you um there's a stench of pride all around you and all that has to be eaten up. Do you see? But you hate you hate [clears throat] the stench leaving you.
And so you get so depressed because you can't smell your filthiness anymore.
Does that Does that make sense?
You got to use rough terms or people don't understand it. I mean I I don't know how else to get people to understand anything nowadays. People listen and they shake their head and they they love it. Yeah, that's nice.
Yeah. Yeah, that's Some people are like that.
Some people are like that. I know them.
That's exactly what my neighbor is.
Lastly, we should be ready to to humble positions and do exercise ourselves in humble duties such as the world is want to look um a a askance. Look askance.
I got it.
I got it.
Um So, lastly, we should be we should be ready to occupy humble positions and do exercise ourselves in humble duties such as the world is want to look askance askance at and to shrink from sweeping, [clears throat] rough manual labor, and so on. I remember in postulantcy, he he came maybe the year before us, but there was a young man that came to the house there and he wanted to be a friar.
And um then it it was time for the friars to go out and do some work and he's like, "Oh, no.
These hands these hands are made for the mass."
He wasn't even a religious yet. "These hands are made for the mass. They're not made for working." They're like, "You have to leave. Time for you to leave then."
And to be content to wear coarse clothes and live on coarse fare.
I will both play and make myself meaner than I have done.
Who said that?
Uh >> David.
>> Wrong.
No, you're right. Second Kings 6:22. And I will be little in my own eyes.
Secondly, humility should be determine our attitude towards our neighbor leading us to esteem him better and more deserving of honor than ourselves and precluding any indulgence in contempt or rash judgment.
In humility, let each esteem others better than themselves. This is a hard thing for us because we we really do think that someone else being honored is it it directly dishonors us.
>> [clears throat] >> It's weird, but that's just kind of the way it always works. So, we have to realize that we'll probably have this um this reaction.
But, we don't have to accept that reaction. We can we can counter the reaction with the truth.
But, no, no, that that person well, why why should I get honored? That that person did this or that or whatever. God chose them. And then you you be happy with them as as happy as God is happy with them. Philippians 2:3, in humility, let each esteem others better than themselves.
Then, we should practice St. Paul's further injunction with honor preventing one another.
Romans 12:10, that is by revering others, yielding to them, not harming them in any way, but obeying their wishes and serving them, promoting their interests as far as possible, praising their actions if good, concealing them if evil, and all this genuinely, not out of self-interest.
Thirdly, we should try to endure their infirmities with patience and tolerate any annoyances they may cause us and never render evil for evil, nor nurse resent. You have to be uh patient with yourself, too, because when we're around people that we don't like, our nature lashes out at them.
So, because you lash out at them, it doesn't you have to like, you know, I'm the worst person ever. I'm not I'm not these humble thing. No, you just have to fight against it. Like, my nature got [clears throat] It's just like a dog.
Like, when you have a dog on a leash and you're walking past somebody and you got the dog a leash, and you're not paying attention, and then the dog lunges at somebody, right?
Well, you got to grab the dog and pull him back. He might have even bit somebody, but you got to pull him back, beat the dog, and then keep walking.
But, that's the same thing with our with our human nature, brother ass. If he gets out, you just got to reel him back in. It's like, you don't beat yourself up and and and and try to and kind of let let it get confused, this the soul and the body. No, the body that the the nature reacted and tried to attack this guy who doesn't deserve to be attacked.
So, you just reel it back in and humble yourself through apologies or whatever else, and you keep trying. You don't beat yourself up on the fact you couldn't get it, can't do it, and you're not one of those people. It's not an all or nothing kind of thing. It's a the nature's going to act that way, and you have to form it, train it, beat it so it doesn't do that anymore. Do you see?
Thirdly, we should try to endure Oh, we did that one.
Resentment takes strictures they may pass on the good part and not sympathize with them and not indulge in self-pity.
I forgot all that. Let's read the third one again. Thirdly, we should try to endure their infirmities with patience and tolerance and tolerate any annoyances they may cause us and never render evil for evil nor nurse resentments, but take any any uh any strict uh strictures strictures they may pass on in good part.
And rather sympathize with them in their weaknesses than indulge in self-pity.
But, as for me, says the psalmist, but as for me, when they were troublesome to me, I humbled my soul.
Psalm 34:13.
In this manner of humility towards our neighbor, we should also bear in mind how some are equals, some superiors, some subjects.
As for our equals, the application of what has been said is clear enough. As [snorts] for superiors, St. Paul gives us a two fold full two fold rule. "Obey your prelates."
He tells us in Hebrews 13:17, "And be subject to them."
To obey means to fulfill their commands.
To be subject implies a humble attitude of in entire submission to their authority as holding God's place in our regard. Superiors themselves should note these three rules.
Have they made um These come from These three rules come from Ecclesiasticus and Thessalonians.
And St. Luke.
Have they made the ruler be among them as um as one of them.
Be among them as one of them.
Ecclesiasticus 32:1. Secondly, from Thessalonians 2:7, "We became little ones in the midst of you as if a nurse should cherish her children." And finally, our Lord our Lord's own words in Luke 22:27 says, "I am in the midst of you as he who serve serveth."
According to these three rules, a superior in the midst of his subjects should be as one of them. That is, he should share completely in the outward manner of their life and all such things as food, clothing, and work.
There then should then he should be among them as a little one, not fancying himself better than others or wiser or more worthy, but because he is a superior.
Uh just because he is superior, but rather less so and more bound by responsibilities both on their account and on his own.
Lastly, let him be as as one that serveth bearing with their weaknesses, caring for them, and leading them uh by good example.
God help us.
Humility should also determine our attitude towards God.
It should in the first place lead us to acknowledge him sincerely as our God, our Lord, and our judge, to obey him in all things as the ser- as the servant his lord and the creature his creator.
Should we sin against him, humbly uh humility should lead us to uh to prompt and sincere repentance and satisfaction and amendment.
Then, humility should help us to bear God's punishments with submission and instead of repining at his chastisements, to acknowledge him as judge and his judgments.
And ourselves as deserving of his correction.
I will bear the wrath of the Lord because I have sinned against him.
That's beautiful. I will bear the wrath of the Lord because I have sinned against him. Micah 7:9.
Lastly, humility should re- restrain any self-complacency in the possession of God's gift to us.
It should force us to acknowledge that that not through any merits of our own but his me- bu- but of his mere goodness has he loved [clears throat] and chosen us and called and justified and glorified us. Romans 8:37, Ephesians 1:4, Romans 8:30.
>> [clears throat] >> Thus, we ought humbly and sincerely to render thanks to him and never arrogantly ascribe to ourselves any of the good gifts he has bestowed on us.
Not to us, oh Lord, not to us, but to thy name give the glory. That's Psalm 90 93 now.
>> [clears throat] >> It's from the fifth Psalm that we pray there in Vespers on Sunday.
And that's a good one to keep in mind whenever you hear that internal voice praising yourself.
It's a nice one to throw out there because it's the nature will always want to keep finding how great you are.
It always wants to see and elevate who you actually you know who you actually are that no one really knows and realizes cuz how great So you just got to keep saying non nobis domine non nobis.
Okay.
That's it.
