Effective horror films benefit from tight, focused storytelling; excessive runtime can dilute tension and pacing, potentially undermining the film's core impact.

Lee Cronin's The Mummy — The Evil Dead Rise Director Did Not Come Here To Be FriendsAdded:
[music] >> Hey everyone. Welcome back to a movie a day review. One film every day, no exceptions. I'm Lenny and today we're talking about Lee Cronin's The Mummy.
Yes.
That Lee Cronin.
The one who gave us Evil Dead Rise. So you already know we're in for a time.
First thing I want to flag. I'm so glad I stayed away from the trailers and the synopsis for this one. I genuinely think going in cold is the right call. So if you haven't seen it yet and you're planning to, maybe save this review for after and just trust me when I say, go watch it.
For everyone else still here, let's talk about it.
Cronin reimagines the entire Mummy concept around an ancient Egyptian demon called the Nas Marian.
Sorry if I pronounced that wildly incorrectly.
There is an exorcism flavor to this whole thing, real practical effects energy, and a tone that pulls more from Poltergeist than from Brendan Fraser, which I appreciated. The Mummy franchise as we knew it could not survive another Tom Cruise iteration. So genuinely, well done.
Now, I enjoyed a lot of this film. I want to lead with that. But I also need to tell you Cronin clearly looked at his Evil Dead Rise work and went, I could go further.
Because there are sequences in this movie that genuinely made me consider whether my dinner was about to come back.
Body horror, off the charts. And then, there's one specific scene that happens to involve one of my biggest phobias.
And I want to be clear with you, sounds came out of my body that I did not give permission to come out.
Involuntary noises from the deepest, most primal part of my being.
I'm not going to tell you what that phobia is. I refuse. You can guess.
A couple of the characters in this film also have what I like to politely call questionable survival instincts.
The oh, you definitely should not have done that energy. But that's me being nitpicky.
My main critique is the runtime. This thing is 2 hours and 14 minutes. There's a tight, lean, terrifying 90-minute movie inside that is fighting to get out. And giving it that extra 30 minutes ultimately worked against it. But, I'd watch what Cronin does next without hesitation. The man understands horror.
Lee Cronin's The Mummy gets a 7 out of 10 for me. Strong recommend. If you enjoyed the video, give it a like. Drop a comment letting me know what your biggest phobia is, just in case Cronin is reading. And hit subscribe so you don't miss what's next. Anyway, I'll be back tomorrow with another one. Thanks for watching Movie A Day Review.
