[00:00:00]This is the Korean Peninsula, home to over 75 million people, one shared history, >> [music] >> and one language. But why are there two Koreas separated by one of the most heavily guarded borders on Earth? The answer, as always, is history. For centuries, Korea existed as a single kingdom, ruled by Korean dynasties. Life wasn't always peaceful, [music] but the peninsula remained united. Then, in the early 1900s, another country showed up, Japan. Japan takes control [music] of Korea and rules it for decades. The Koreans are not exactly thrilled about that.

[00:00:35]Then comes World War II. Japan loses.

[00:00:37]Korea is finally free. Great. [music] Well, not exactly. The United States and the Soviet Union arrive to help manage the peninsula. The Soviets move into the north, the Americans move into the south. And they draw a temporary line across Korea at sea at the 38th [music] parallel, just until things get sorted out. As tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union grow, neither side can agree on how Korea should be governed. The north forms its own government. [music] The south forms its own government. And suddenly, there are two Koreas. Looks like this temporary border isn't so temporary anymore.

[00:01:12]A few years later, war breaks out. North Korea invades the south hoping to reunify the peninsula by force.

[00:01:18]>> [music] >> The Korean War becomes one of the deadliest conflicts of the Cold War.

[00:01:22]After 3 years of fighting, neither side wins. A ceasefire is signed. The border stays almost exactly [music] where it started. And that's why today, South Korea remains an independent country in the south, while North Korea remains a separate country in the north. One peninsula, one people, two very different nations.
