This video provides a visceral demonstration of how climate volatility can instantly paralyze the foundational mechanics of food production. It serves as a sobering reminder that our food security remains a high-stakes gamble against the increasingly unpredictable elements.

Is Corn Up? Our Guy Returns to the StoreAdded:
Those clouds look like rain clouds, but I just checked the radar and yeah, I don't know that we're going to get much rain this afternoon.
Initially today was supposed to be a rainy day.
And as we got closer to today, which is Wednesday, April 29th, as we got closer to the day, the rain chances started going down.
So now we're down to maybe rain by 4:00 or 5:00 this afternoon and a little bit of rain into this evening.
Uh one forecast I saw last night was only predicting about 2/10 of an inch of rain.
So this will probably go down as the driest April we've ever had.
But the good news is uh some counties in the state of Maryland have been declared a drought disaster, which qualifies us for low-interest government loans. Isn't that great? Low-interest government loans.
Why can't we just get more free money?
So the county just north of us, Charles County, uh is one of those counties declared a disaster area because of the drought.
So [clears throat] any county surrounding that county also qualifies. So I don't know why Charles County is worse than St. Mary's or Calvert, but anyway, they are.
And really, what are the losses right now? How do you calculate losses in April?
The The only guys with losses would maybe be vegetable growers.
Uh you know, the ones trying to get their uh tomato plants uh set out or any of the early crops, maybe strawberries. I haven't been to the auction this week to know if any strawberries are coming on yet. Um so yeah, maybe some of those vegetable crops could have a loss, but as far as the the grain crops go, we don't have any losses yet. Corn has come up. Well, I'm about to check this corn that I planted last Friday. So now we're 5 days into this. I will be surprised if it came up because I don't think there was enough moisture there in that ground to bring it up.
Um so the corn that was planted 2 weeks ago, I think I said earlier, it it came up and it's only about that tall.
It came up and then it just stopped. It It didn't do any more.
So let's uh get out here and uh walk out here and see if it's up.
I don't see any green rows.
I'm not seeing anything popping through the ground as I'm walking across, but I want to go a little bit further here into the field.
Uh let's dig around a little bit, see what we have.
Okay, there's got to be a kernel up.
Okay, I found a kernel.
And what do we got?
Did it germinate?
Yes.
It has germinated.
But we've we've we've got a taproot on there.
But that's that's all it's done. It hasn't popped out of the ground yet.
5 days later.
But I am surprised it has germinated.
Let's jump in here and check one more.
>> [snorts] >> But yes, you can see how dry it is.
Okay, I should have found one by now.
Where the hell is it?
Up right there. Right there.
All right, so that has the root on it and just just starting right there to shoot something up above ground.
>> [sighs] >> So let's hope for half an inch of rain would be good right now. An inch wouldn't hurt us.
Uh still cool temperatures.
It's only about 60Β° today.
Got up to about 63 yesterday.
Uh going into the 40s and 50s at night.
So even if it does come up, it's not it's not going to grow.
I got the last load of corn hauled this morning. I came right back and put a load of soybeans on the truck.
I wanted to pull at least one load of soybeans out of the bin to make sure they're okay, don't have any issues there. They seem to be okay, so I think I'll take that load of soybeans up in the morning. I don't know what I'm going to do about the rest of those soybeans, if I'm going to haul them myself or get a trucking outfit to come in and haul them for me. I guess I've got to call around on some pricing.
And uh see what the basis is at other places to see if it's worth me paying a trucking company to haul these somewhere else.
We'll see. I think I'm I'm riding down here now. The bird man uh disked some fields that I want to plant soybeans in.
He did that yesterday afternoon.
So I want to ride down here. I may jump on the disk and go over these fields a second time before it rains.
Yeah, I'm I'll jump in the tractor and uh maybe try a little bit.
See how it looks going over the second time or do we want to wait until uh we get some rain before we hit them again.
I thought maybe it was going to be too [clears throat] too dry and hard for that disk to do anything, but he didn't say anything about it. It looks like it came up okay.
The incident that we had at the store last week reappeared yesterday afternoon.
We did have a no trespassing warrant put uh on that guy.
He did. So I think I had mentioned in that video where I talked about that, wondering if we were going to make the local news website, and we did. And I did put a link to that news article in that video. So if you go back if you want to see that uh press release from the sheriff's office or I don't know. It It may have actually been an article written by a reporter.
Uh you can go back to that video and look in the comments and uh click on the link to read that article and get the guy's name and all of that.
So we put a no trespassing warrant against him uh last week when this incident happened.
And then uh sure enough, he reappeared yesterday. We had a customer walk in and said, "Hey, there's somebody milling around uh on the side of the store where you have all of your mulch and topsoil."
She said um "I said something to him and I I think I think he's getting out of here now."
So my wife happened to be there at the time. My daughter was not there. So my wife uh took a stroll around the store and did not did not see him anywhere.
So an employee sent a text message to both my daughter and I and said "Uh hey, you may want to check the cameras.
You know, this this customer came in and said there was a guy out there. She said, 'Based on the description, I think it may be the same guy that you trespassed last week.'"
So my daughter went back and checked the cameras and uh sure enough, it was it was the same character.
So, my daughter called the police. You hate You hate to call them for stupid like this, but if if the guy is going to keep coming around bugging you and running off customers, then you've got to take care of the problem.
So, she reviewed the video and said, "Yep, that's the guy." So, she called the police. The police came down and took the report. By this time, he had already left.
So, she said, "Uh, hey, I need you to download that video footage and put the clips together, send it via email to the officer that came down to file the report so he has evidence of this."
So, I downloaded the clip and you you can see him walking across the parking lot. He headed over to Dollar General.
And then, I don't know. It's maybe 5 minutes later, he comes back. And you can see him come into our back lot where we store all of the mulch.
And, uh, I think he was looking for a place to plug in his phone and charge it up.
Now, the guy is not homeless. As far as I know, he's not.
And when this woman came around, she was looking at the mulch we had trying to figure out what she wanted, I think she kind of startled him or he startled her.
So, they had a few words and he you can see him in the video kind of taking off.
And that's when he left.
So, I don't know what will be done. I'm sure my daughter will have to go to court a couple of days over this incident.
I don't know if when the officer left there, if he went down to this guy's house and tried to find him and I don't What do you do with a new trespass? When somebody trespasses, do they go to jail?
Do they get a another warning, a fine?
I'm really not sure.
But, these are some of the things we deal with at the store with retail.
So, if it's not a drought on the farm, it's trespassers at the store that we deal with.
See you later.
