From July to December 2025, over 1,043 gas leaks were reported in Bexar County alone, with 532 classified as Grade 1 (highest risk requiring immediate repair), representing more than half of all reported leaks. This data, sourced from the Texas Railroad Commission, reveals that gas leaks are occurring more frequently than many residents realize, raising concerns about aging infrastructure and potential safety hazards across the San Antonio region.

Map shows 1,000+ gas leaks reported in Bexar County from July to December 2025Added:
You're watching Fox News at 9:00 [music] with Brian Wolf, Ashley Barrientos, chief meteorologist Alex Garcia, [music] and investigative reporting by Yami Virgin.
Fox SA News at 9:00, Puro San Antonio.
>> [music] >> Tonight, we're taking a deeper dive at gas leaks in our area after two explosions on a northeast side street destroyed two homes hospitalizing two families two weeks ago today. So, what was happening before the explosions and how often are gas leaks being reported across our region? Tonight, the data, the pattern, and the questions still in need of answers that may shock you. Fox SA's Yami Virgin investigates why this may not be isolated.
This is Preston Hollow where two homes exploded without a warning, but the data is showing us now that this type of danger may be happening more often than any of us were aware of. In fact, in Bear County alone in the last 6-month reporting period, there were over 1,000 gas leaks in this county.
>> [music] >> We were not at home.
We were went out to eat.
All of a sudden Like a sonic boom.
Loud explosion. Like a massive earthquake, the whole house vibrated.
This is what those who live here >> We're uneasy because we just don't know.
>> Heard and saw >> Like this big crash.
>> Flames, fire.
>> on Preston Hollow.
>> Been kind of scary.
>> Traumatic event. Definitely scary.
>> What's going to happen in the future?
But what happened here may not be as rare as it seems.
The number of gas leaks is staggering, and the state tracks every one of them.
So, we went straight to the Texas Railroad Commission where those records are kept. From July to December of 2025, 1,043 gas leaks were reported in Bear County alone. Comal County, 162 leaks. Guadalupe County, 98 leaks. Kerr County, [music] 67 leaks. Hundreds more across the region. Altogether, it's more than 1,500 leaks in our viewing area in just [music] 6 months. In Bear County, CPS Energy is the primary provider [music] responsible for maintaining the natural gas system.
For the last 27 years, one of the areas of focus for my practice is fire and explosion cases, and so, I've handled and tried cases coast-to-coast involving gas utility leaks. Attorney Michael Lyons won a $110 million verdict in Bear County last year against CPS Energy in a similar gas explosion case. He's now representing the two families whose homes exploded on Preston Hollow, the Ochoa Reyes family and the Knowles. We interviewed Lyons before he was officially retained to represent the families. All you need is a competent ignition source to to meet that fuel load, and it can cause a very intense explosion.
>> Those are the same questions now being asked here, especially when it comes to the most dangerous leaks. In Bear County alone between July and December, 532 of those leaks were classified as grade one, the highest level requiring immediate repair. That is more than half of all reported leaks, meaning many of these leaks were not minor. They were considered potentially dangerous. What we see throughout Texas, not just with respect to Bear County and CPS, is that a lot of these gas systems are old.
They are deteriorating and they're leaking. To put Bear County numbers into context, Harris County reported more than 9,000 leaks. Nearly 4,000 [music] were high risk, but that is a much larger system. Dallas County reported more than 5,600 leaks, but fewer than 1,000 were high risk. In Bear County, 532 [music] of the 1,043 leaks in that 6-month period were high risk, nearly half. That means many of the leaks reported here are considered dangerous according to the semi-annual report.
>> A lot of these gas companies are turning a blind eye and playing whack-a-mole, simply solving the problem uh you know, after it's too late to fix it.
>> Back at the explosion site, investigators are still working to determine what caused this blast, but a key part of that investigation will come from the PS 95 leak report, a required state filing CPS must file that documents where the leak was located, where it was above or below ground, what kind of pipe or equipment was involved, and how severe it was.
It also tracks what may have caused the leak from corrosion to equipment failure to outside damage, and how it was repaired.
>> Where did the leak come from? What was the degree of that leak? How long had it been leaking? And those are the questions Fox SA's trying to get answers on as we wait for a final report on the investigation.
