It’s a sobering wake-up call for those raised on Marvel to realize that superheroes can be a vehicle for nihilism and social critique rather than just light entertainment. This reaction marks the exact moment a viewer discovers the difference between a theme park ride and a genuine deconstruction of the human condition.

I thought Watchmen would be like Marvel... I was wrongAdded:
Welcome back everybody. We are on a little side quest this week as we take a break from the MCU after we finished phase two. And I don't really know what to expect from this one. It's it's Watchmen. I really love some Zack Snyder movies and I'm really not a fan of some other Zack Snyder movies. So I'm looking forward to seeing where this one will fall on that scale. I have no idea what characters or anything is involved in this movie to be honest. I assume it's like a group of people who collectively are the Watchmen, maybe. Anyway, thank you so much for being here. Apologies there was no video last week. You might have seen my post on the community tab.
My cat Chief had to have a bit of an emergency surgery last weekend and then he just required my full attention after that. He is on the mend now. If he pops up in the background in his usual spot, you may see him with the cone of shame.
Please don't judge him, okay? We know it looks silly, but we need to keep the cone on.
But let's get stuck in to Watchmen.
It's all yellow.
Oh, this is rated 18. Interesting.
United States does not start fights. Let it be clear. There he is. As a result of the Soviet act Gosh, this bit reminds me of the beginning of The Last of Us TV series. Doomsday clock up to 5 minutes until midnight.
>> Uh-oh. What are the chances the Russians will actually attack the United States?
Pat Buchanan.
Zero. Oh. Stop the Soviet Union from stockpiling record amounts of nuclear So this is like Cold War times?
I thought it was going to be modern war modern times.
Maybe the whole world feels like that.
Oh. Soviet So it's kind of giving me a lot darker vibes than the other movies we've watched so far.
Like a song Woo.
Can't that frighten me, sorry.
300 it said on the door.
>> [laughter] >> Oh, that was so cool.
Oh god.
>> [snorts] >> I love the slow mo shots HE USES.
OH [ __ ] HE KNOCKED THAT WHOLE WALL.
OH, it does remind me of 300 so much. I didn't specify in the in the intro 300 is the movie that I love.
I love the fight scenes and how comic booky 300 looks and like the slow motion bits.
I think this is Zack Snyder. I think it's his third movie that he directed or something, which is crazy.
It's a joke.
It's all a joke.
It's just a joke, bro.
Gosh, I do not know where this is going.
Oh no.
>> [gasps] >> Oh.
Gone.
Gettable, too.
God.
There we go.
What an opening.
Criminal world goes gaga over a silk specter.
I'd say silk specter.
God, that reminds me of Only Fools and Horses. Do you guys watch know what that show is? Only Fools and Horses.
And they dress up as Batman and Robin in one of the episodes and it's like one of the funniest episodes of TV in all time of all time.
So this is this the Watchmen?
There.
Oh [ __ ] Who is she?
Oh.
Oh that classic photo.
[ __ ] Sally's retiring. Nice.
Oh my god, is that the mom from Spy Kids?
Oh.
>> [gasps] >> Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
JDM?
Oh no.
Oh what?
Wow.
The blue guy.
Oh.
Oh my god. They weren't there. God, I can't imagine how awful that would have been to see.
In Fort Worth, I've been there. I drove down that road.
Oh it was him.
It was Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Okay.
I actually love when movies and games like weave in real world events into their games or their stories.
Like uh Call of Duty: Black Ops features the Kennedy assassination as well.
This feels like the second time I've been really bamboozled by the time setting of a movie. Like Captain America, I had no idea that was a war film when I went into it. And then this one, I did not expect this either.
Oh my god.
On the moon.
Is that the blue man?
Who's that in the background?
Is it meant to be Bowie?
Wow.
I don't know if some of them are supposed to be like a parody of certain Marvel characters.
Who what who watches?
>> [screaming] >> Oh my god.
Stupid.
Stupid.
Yeah, what happened? Did he like I don't know what who that guy was. Like did that kill him or is he like a superhero? The guy was built like a linebacker. Oh.
>> Yeah, I saw the body.
A guy his age, he was in terrific shape.
You mean apart from being dead? Yeah, okay. He's dead.
Shaking hands with the president. Woah.
You think Blake was a spook?
A spook?
>> Government uh black ops. Black ops. Oh my god, I just said black ops.
This is way bigger than both of us. So is it going to be like a murder mystery?
Oh.
Rorschach's journal.
October 12th. Rorschach. When the drains finally scab over Oh, not the grapple.
The accumulated filth of all save us.
Oh, that was so smooth.
Now the whole world stands on the brink.
Wait, his mask is changing?
And the night reeks fornication and bad consciences. Ooh.
Do some more investigating then.
Oh, they really did trash the house.
Secret door? Come on.
The way his mask is changing is so weird.
Beep.
Big red button.
Oh.
The comedian gets the last laugh. The comedian.
Is that a superhero name? The comedian?
Minutemen.
Somebody knows why.
Somebody knows.
Oh, and it's a mystery, a murder mystery. It was me, Nite Owl Mothman, Captain Metropolis, >> How funny.
Hooded Justice, Silk Spectre, and the Comedian.
Wait, so they're not proper superheroes like with powers? Hmm.
Nixon, oh, that prick.
And to think I voted for that prick five times. Five?
Oh, well, it's almost midnight. How did it [clears throat] go?
Truth.
Oh.
It's the left hook floored Captain Axis, remember? Aw, feel bodies. Remember when he was in his glory days? Yeah, us retired guys have to stick together, right?
>> [laughter] >> You ever miss it?
Miss what? Being a superhero or dating?
I wonder where this is filmed. New York?
Oh, no.
Don't go in. No.
Not safe.
What a cool shot.
Oh, it's the masked guy.
Help myself to some beans.
Hope you don't mind.
I would love some beans on toast. You want me to heat those up for you?
I like this.
Cold beans, no. Look at this.
Is this bean juice?
Human bean [laughter] juice. Human bean juice.
Blood, too.
He's dead.
Let's talk downstairs.
What's downstairs? Has he got a lair?
Killer didn't know who the comedian was.
An ordinary Oh, he does.
Maybe someone's picking off costumed heroes.
You don't think that's a little paranoid?
Mhm. Speaking of friends, how's Hollis Mason?
He wrote that book.
Said some bad things about the comedian in it.
It looks like they were all old friends.
Maybe I'm not recognizing some people.
Where's the blue guy?
You were never that sentimental. Attack on one is attack on all of us.
I want to know what's under the mask.
Watchmen are over. Says tricky dick.
Says me. Get the boys back together.
Do you really feel normal?
At least I'm not the one still hiding behind a mask.
>> Oh.
No.
You're hiding in plain sight.
Oh, come on.
>> Wait, he's in a tube station.
When we were partners Aw.
>> great times, huh, Rorschach?
What happened?
You quit.
Aw, his suit kind of gives like Batman vibes, right? That one there on his right.
He doesn't want to be back in the game, Rorschach.
It's a fight.
To date, you're one of only two I've been watching a lot of The Boys recently as well.
So certainly profited greatly by it.
Like that's just reminded me of Homelander right now. Developing cheap, renewable sources of energy that we might eliminate Well, that was a good shot. But if we made resources infinite uh we make war obsolete. I don't like this guy. Gives me weird vibes.
So only two have come out and revealed their identity, said.
They're an old group. And we're going to get the band back together.
And discover who killed the comedian.
Sounds like a plan.
Rorschach is a sociopath, Dan.
And so is the comedian.
He was practically a Nazi. Oh.
It's obviously occurred to Rorschach that we're the only ones who know each other's identities.
Actually, the whole world knows.
So nobody knows his, okay.
Even if Jon stops 99% of it the 1% that get through still kill every living thing on Earth.
God dammit. Even Dr. Manhattan can't be everywhere at once.
Okay.
I think I'm picking up where it's going.
This is so interesting. This is a lot darker than I thought.
The first Nite Owl runs an auto repair shop.
The first Silk Spectre is a The first, so people take over the role, I guess. It sounds like they pass on the role.
>> in a revolving door where he got gunned down. [ __ ] Mothman's in an asylum in Maine.
So I wonder, are they born with powers or are they made?
I shall go tell the indestructible man that someone Is this the blue guy?
Good evening, Rorschach.
>> Woah, that's his cough on his butt.
But you're going to leave disappointed.
Woah.
I have a real name I've been using a couple years now. Try it. Whatever you say, Laurie. Laurie. Killers have been publicly identified. Already warned driver.
Give me a warning you two.
Oh, wow. Even if I wanted to help, my future is blocked as a kind of temporal interference. Uh-oh.
In all likelihood, nuclear holocaust.
>> Oh, well, okay.
>> [laughter] >> Uh-oh.
Particles which travel backward through what you perceive as time.
His voice is so perfect for this.
So we can't do anything to stop it?
Goodbye, Rorschach. Oh.
I kind of recognize the voice also. I'm not leaving till I've had my say.
>> Oh.
Gosh, his his powers are scary.
Can he just do anything? Manipulate time, space? If only you could perceive time as I do. She looks sick of this [ __ ] >> me show you.
Oh. Magic, to dream, that is what I have before. I WAS A HERO, GOD DAMN IT.
IT'S NOT MY FAULT.
AW. MISTAKE.
One time. He tries to rape you.
Woah.
But you won't.
You know I can't.
He's locked in. So you called Dan, which is only natural.
You deserve the comfort of an old friend.
That would get so annoying so fast.
Yeah, leave him to his his thing. Go enjoy dinner.
Aw, she looks lovely.
99 red balloons.
>> [laughter] >> Aw, he kind of gives me like Superman vibes.
Well, maybe more Clark Kent vibes. Broad daylight yelling, "Punish me. Punish me."
>> [laughter] >> I'm just saying no. You get lost. That reminds me I also really want to watch The Punisher, but I don't know if that fits into my I really pulled that on Rorschach.
Rorschach dropped him down an elevator shaft.
Oh.
Oh my god. That's not even funny.
I love shots like this through a window.
It's so pretty.
All the different lights.
I don't know what you call them.
Yeah, but do you remember my costume?
All that tight latex. I mean, it was awful. Oh, he remembers. Yeah, awful.
Mhm.
I think the Keen Act was the best thing that ever happened to us.
>> Keen Act.
Jon thinks unless he can do something about it that the world's going to implode.
quantum mechanics and parallel realities with him.
I never even know what universe he's actually seeing. Oh.
I can't even tell if he actually cares about me anymore or if he's just pretending.
So, they're like an item?
I'm sorry.
I'd invite you out to dinner to catch up and have a few laughs, but there don't seem to be that many laughs around these days. Aw.
Oops.
Hello darkness, my old friend. No.
This song has been memed too much now.
It's kind of lost its >> [laughter] >> point and suit.
Soundtrack's good.
Aw, blue man looks good in a suit.
So, I'm getting the vibe that like superheroes or I don't know what they're called in this universe have kind of been shunned, I guess. Like they're all in hiding or they've sort of given up the job.
Oh, [ __ ] Laurie?
Is that you?
And it also seems like their names were passed on. I hate it when Jon teleports me.
Well, it beats flying coach.
Margarita?
Mother, it's 2:00 in the afternoon.
Hell, yeah.
He sent me an item of memorabilia. It's a Tijuana Bible.
>> Not the Tijuana. Eight-page porno comic they did in the '30s and '40s.
Of Silk Spectre. They're very valuable, like antiques.
Oh.
Saw it in the paper.
Eddie Blake's funeral. Ah.
Poor Eddie. Poor Eddie, after what he did to you? You don't know.
Get those cartons open. I'm 67 years old.
Every day the future looks a little bit darker.
God, this is so sad.
Even the grimy parts of it keep on getting brighter. So, she misses being in I was about to say the Seven.
I have been watching too much home Homelander, The Boys.
Oh, that's JDM. I thought I kind of recognized him in the intro, but it was so dark and he looked so old. I wonder how my hair looks.
Oh, no. Oh, go ahead. I'll be there in 5.
I don't like where this is going.
You knew I was changing.
Sure I did. I know what you need.
You got to have some kind of reason for dressing in an outfit like this. No.
No spelled y e s. No.
Spelled n o.
All right? COME ON SWEETHEART.
OH.
OH GOOD WOMAN.
Oh my god.
No.
I don't want to see this.
You little bastard.
>> Oh thank god.
Her fears.
It rains on the just and the unjust alike. The comedian has a little bit of both.
He's dead now girl.
He better be dead.
He looks like he's always somewhere else.
Like not present. Yeah, what the [ __ ] Oh my god.
Oh he's just vaporizing people. Wow.
>> [laughter] >> I don't know what to make of this.
Oh my god.
Oh is this the back when he's What the [ __ ] So the blue guy is just stood remembering all of this.
Whilst at his funeral I guess.
Thanks to you.
You sound bitter.
He does sound bitter. Jealous.
>> [groaning] >> Oh.
It's what I [ __ ] needed.
The war is over now. Oh, he has a baby on the way.
>> [snorts] >> You will remember me in my country.
Oh, [ __ ] Get him, girl.
MY FISH.
OH.
HOLY [ __ ] You could have turned the gun into steam, the bullets into mercury, the the bottle into goddamn snowflakes, but you didn't, did you? I hope they don't try and make us like this character eventually, cuz what the [ __ ] Now, I don't give a [ __ ] who tried to kill him, or who did kill him, rather.
In fact, I wish they did it sooner. You know, for a guy who calls himself the comedian, I can never tell when you're joking.
Watch me.
That's the real joke.
Are they trying to be a group of good guys?
Not in it for the ink. We can do so much more.
We can save this world. Oh.
So, does he actually want to be good?
Or he thinks he's being good. Yeah, but it takes a room full of morals to think they're small enough for you to handle.
Now, we finally have the power to finish the job.
The button. The guy standing in the corner is just so random.
And Ozymandias here, he's the smartest man on the cinder.
So, he's all for nuclear nuclear war, as well.
Potential killer.
I want to know more about that guy.
This guy right here.
Ashes to ashes.
Oh, god.
Ban all masks. No vigilantes. Bad just not my Okay, so people are like we want we don't want these vigilantes anymore. They're more trouble than they're worth. Get rid of them.
Get rid of the watchmen.
They're pro-police. Wow.
Oh, well, here they are. Order.
You must clear the streets until the Oh, [ __ ] gathering is over.
Ah!
>> [screaming] >> Damn it. All right. THAT'S HOW YOU WANT TO DO IT?
>> OH, NO. OH, NO.
I don't like this.
Oh, [ __ ] He's always got a menacing look on his face. It's so Negan-coded.
Sorry, I'm not I'm not dancing to him shooting people. Um there's boogie music probably isn't going to make the cut of the video cuz of copyright, but there's like boogie music on. That's what I'm boogying to, not him killing people.
Your days are numbered.
Till then, it's like you always say, our side is only protection. You're [ __ ] killing people. [ __ ] Get your sticky hands off me.
Wow.
What the hell happened to us?
So, this guy had like genuine intentions, I think.
Aw.
What happened to the American dream?
It came true.
You're looking at it.
Damn.
Yeah, who's that?
>> Oh, he's got the hat. Is it the guy who usually wears the the mask, the inky mask?
Maybe.
Uh-oh.
Oh.
Oh, we saw that symbol earlier.
I know he's the guy with the inky mask.
Also known as Edgar William Bourne, also known as Malek.
A mask.
I'M A RETIRED BUSINESSMAN. OH.
[screaming] What do you want from me? [laughter] Heard you attended Blake's funeral.
Why? Very suspicious.
HOW'D YOU KNOW HE WAS THE COMEDIAN? He broke in here.
Look at those little ears. He was babbling, not making any sense.
I was pissing in my pants. Oh, [ __ ] It's a joke.
It's all a [ __ ] joke.
What's happened?
I did bad things to women. I shot kids.
>> Sorry, you don't get to have a guilty conscience now. But that was [ __ ] war. No. No. You two did you the closest thing to a friend I got. What the [ __ ] does that say?
Like guys like me?
Mother, forgive me.
And then he left. Oh, maybe he was supposed to kill him. I don't know what the hell he was talking about.
Yeah, that was like nonsense.
The list. Has he been given a list of people to kill? I don't know. Sounds unbelievable.
Probably true.
Is that all bills?
What kind of cancer?
You know, the kind you eventually get better from?
That ain't the kind I got. Oh.
God, this is all very dark and depressing.
I'm like so locked in. I keep forgetting to talk about what I'm thinking.
What was it he saw?
And that list he mentioned.
Yeah, the list I'm interested in.
Who's on the list?
No time for friends.
Only our enemies leave roses.
Violent lives.
This guy's journal is so deep, man.
Humans are savage in nature.
No matter how much I didn't realize that was back to that scene. The great clown, Pagliacci, is in town.
Go see him. That should pick you up.
Ouch.
I am Pagliacci.
Good joke.
Hilarious.
Curtains.
God, this movie is so bizarre.
Who's that? Plenty of time.
Oh my god.
Everything is like taking a battery.
Oh, several hands.
Oh, it's so creepy. All the hands all over her.
No.
I don't want that.
Several of him?
Look, I know you were just trying Are you working in here while we're in bed together?
>> Oh.
She just wants quality time with the real you. Oh my god.
>> Tell me which one of you was giving me A PITY [ __ ] OH, [ __ ] MY ATTENTION WAS completely focused on No, it wasn't, though. Lies. You You how everything in this world fits together, except people? Mhm. I don't want that responsibility anymore. Oh [ __ ] she's breaking up with him.
Go be with the nice man with the glasses.
He's all yours.
>> I'm sure he will focus on you, girl.
Just dicks out everywhere. What the >> [laughter] >> Don't worry, John. She'll be back.
>> [laughter and gasps] >> Oh my gosh.
He knows. He knows she won't be back. He can see it. hero, weapon, linchpin of our national security.
>> Oh.
Dr. I like this guy. I hope he doesn't do anything really horrific and awful.
>> [laughter] >> by Vought Enterprises.
Even Vought just reminds me of Vought now since I've been watching The Boys so much. I think there's only like three episodes left of The Boys as well before the big finale.
Who is it?
It's Laurie.
Oh my god, quick.
Fix your hair.
I got to fix my hair.
>> Sorry, I just had this new lock installed.
I didn't know where else to go.
Aw.
What's wrong?
I left John.
Uh-oh.
I'm so sorry. Um I don't know why I'm here. I just I don't know anybody else. Aw.
Hey, you probably just had an argument or something. Oh, no. And people are just shadows.
Shadows in a fog.
He's very unsettling. I was just going to see Hollis for our weekly beer session. Aw. You're more than welcome to join. Yeah, go out for a beer.
Aw.
God, the music's beautiful.
Woah.
Make up that blue is too light for television.
Oh, is that dark enough?
Oh, I like that. Need more. Bernie, how stressed?
Strange.
Oh.
Uh-oh. Afghanistan will obviously come up, but just play it cool and try to >> on here? He's about to go on to a TV interview.
The other two are about to get into a fight. was gifted with extraordinary power.
>> Oh, here we go.
Lore.
I want more lore.
>> [applause] >> So, he was He got his powers in an accident, okay?
So, it's not like we're born with them.
Oh, [ __ ] I want to see these guys [ __ ] them up.
Yeah. Oh, glasses off. Do you agree that we're that close to annihilation? My father was a watchmaker. Oh, just give a simple answer.
As a photograph of oxygen to a drowning man.
He cooked her. Even in a world without nuclear weapons, there would STILL BE DANGER.
>> [screaming] >> SORRY.
I DIDN'T LIKE THAT.
MY OWN FUTURE. Get him, girl.
>> I am not. He died of cancer.
He was a good man. Yeah.
>> Edgar Jacobi, also known as the SUPERVILLAIN MOLOCH?
OH.
60S, BATTLES, CONFLICTS.
Did you know that he had Geez, Louise. started working for the government.
Cancer.
Oh. You're suggesting I WAS THE CAUSE?
LIKE PROXIMITY to this guy causes cancer? What the [ __ ] All right, let's settle down, please.
>> [panting and sighs] >> Oh my god, they're going to kiss.
Ah, girl, you had your chance.
>> [laughter] >> You saw each other for 11 years.
>> Doug, one question at a time. She has cancer as well. Oh my god.
Isn't that right, Miss Slater?
Oh no.
I gave you everything.
Oh no.
Damn you, John.
God damn you. Jenny.
Wait.
What the hell? I don't know what they're implying if it's just proximity to this man or prolonged proximity. Please.
Uh-oh.
I said Uh-oh.
Oh, I thought he was about to blast him.
Oh, what the [ __ ] Oh, wow. All we ever see of stars are their old photographs.
Oh, so that's them back in the day.
You can pick it up tomorrow. Okay. 75 cents. Oh, he just seems like a sweet guy.
We were introduced by a good friend of mine from college, Wally Weaver. Wally Weaver.
It is February 12th, 1981.
Wally dies of cancer. Oh.
>> Of which they now say I am the cause.
That's crazy.
That night, Jenny and I make love for the first time.
Now she has cancer.
>> accident awaits me.
Oh wow.
Yeah, what is the accident?
Oh, I'll catch up with you guys. I think I left my watch inside.
Hey, let's just wait a second.
Oh god.
When I get to the door, Wally is turning white.
>> locked in.
But what's it going to do? Oh.
I'm sorry, John.
What What do you mean? Hey, don't leave me. Aw. Don't leave me.
Poor Genie, she didn't want to watch her mom get zapped.
Ow.
Oh, wow.
Oh god.
Going to turn you into the blue man.
As she passes me the cold, perspiring glass, our fingers touch.
>> [gasps] >> Cute. Now, it's just a question of reassembling the components in the correct sequence.
Is that his dad, the watchmaker?
Oh my god, wow.
Oh, [ __ ] So, it just How does he come back from that?
There is nothing to bury.
Genie frames [music] the snapshot.
It's the only photograph of me anyone Aw, how sad is that? story system is seen by the perimeter fence. Oh, where did he go?
and screams for a moment before vanishing.
God, this is so creepy.
Zap, zap, zap.
She knows it's got to be him.
Yes. John, is that you? How did she know? Possibly the most significant event in recent history. We repeat, the Superman exists and he is American.
>> Oh, they call him Superman.
Superman exists and he is American.
>> [laughter] >> Oh, wow.
They're shaping me into something [music] God he.
Something lethal.
>> They want him to be like a weapon.
Oh, wow.
In January 1971, President Nixon asks me to intervene in Vietnam.
Oh, that's what we saw earlier.
A week later, the conflict ends.
Some of the Viet Cong forces want to surrender to me personally.
>> Oh, wow. They see him as like a god.
Oh!
No.
No, no, no, no, no. Oh. What I said was God exists and he's American. Oh, right. Now, if you begin to feel an intense and crushing feeling of religious terror at the concept, that indicates only that you are still sane. Okay. It is Christmas 1963.
Jenny tells me she is afraid. So, they stay together.
I tell her I still want her.
And that I always will. No.
So, when did they break up?
>> her.
Why does he lie though? What's What does he gain from this?
>> young girl looks at me and smiles.
Uh-oh.
>> [gasps] >> After each long kiss, she plants a smaller, gentler one upon my lips.
Is this why he's still with Jenny? Jenny accuses me of chasing jailbait.
She bursts into angry tears asking if it's because she's getting older.
Oh, Janey, no.
She's aging more noticeably every day.
>> Oh, [ __ ] this guy.
I am tired of Earth.
Oh, [ __ ] off then.
>> [laughter] >> Go away to the moon or something.
>> [gasps] >> Yeah, get rid.
I think he should stay there, honestly.
Claim their labors are to build a heaven.
Yet their heaven is popular.
What is this?
Perhaps nothing is made.
A clock.
Oh, it's like a clock?
Always will be.
Too late.
Yeah, I can see why she got sick of him.
[ __ ] hell.
Assuming conservative projections of how many Soviet warheads we destroy beforehand, we'll lose all of the East Coast.
Jesus.
Mexico would catch the worst of it.
Most of the farm belt might remain unaffected. Not so bad.
Yeah.
Mr. President, what would you like to do?
I don't have to make a decision like this. The death con two.
Begin fueling the bombers. Oh, god.
People are going to need good old-fashioned energy to rely on.
You can understand.
The blimps outside. And why free energy?
Well, free's just another word for socialist. Oh.
Inquiring at any past communist affiliations you might have had. Mr. Iacocca, I don't think he gives a [ __ ] about you.
It's a matter of public record that by 17, both my parents were dead, leaving me alone. Aw.
I mean, they say I'm the smartest man in the world, but the truth is I've often felt stupid.
>> suit, it's kind of sharp. Nuclear power is like a drug, and you gentlemen, along with foreign interests, are the pushers.
What's his resolve for this?
You listen. Oh. Privately, I'm worth more than all of your corporations combined. I can buy and sell you three times over, which That look up and down, [ __ ] Seems all the old villains are dead.
Survive?
I think I have some ideas.
Uh-oh.
Told you to leave.
OH, [ __ ] OH MY GOD, HE'S HIT EVERYBODY but the guy.
Wow. I want a name.
GIVE ME A NAME.
OH, NO, I got it.
That's crazy.
Potassium cyanide. Guy was dead before he hit the ground.
I'm going to go to a diner.
But who'd want to kill us now?
Why now? But it's not safe out here.
He's going to be like, you should stay with me, so we're safe together.
Well, listen, um why don't you come stay with me?
Oldest trick in the book.
Think of it as doing me a favor.
I wouldn't have to worry about you being out there. Aw, I just want to take care of you.
On 43rd and 7th, saw Dryburg and Jupiter leaving diner.
Aw.
>> know me.
Is it that guy with I Who is it? Make room for Dryburg.
Does Manhattan even have a heart to break? Yeah, exactly. I don't think he gives a [ __ ] At his apartment, I found clues. This guy.
I've seen the logo before.
At Moloch's.
There we go.
The link.
Guy worked for Pyramid Transnational.
More than just a delivery service, I think.
Is he dead? My lover wants us masked dead. No no more lies, Moloch runs Pyramid.
Aw.
This is the police. Oh, [ __ ] If there's anybody in there with you, SEND THEM OUT UNHARMED.
NO NO NO NO. [ __ ] When you are Oh god, people are going to die.
Look how many people they send after this one dude.
I guess they don't know that it's one dude, but it seems a lot.
Uh-oh.
Uh-oh.
Who is this that the building's on fire?
Oh my god.
Nobody's shooting.
>> [laughter] >> Donk.
I love the sound design. It's so good.
How is he absolutely bamboozled that whole team?
I love it. Oh, [ __ ] Hats off. The hats off.
Oh, no. He's definitely going to be overpowered here.
HE STINKS.
>> [screaming] >> OH, WOW. THEY UNMASKED HIM. did and he's been identified as Walter Kovacs, a 35-year-old white male.
>> Okay. The murder of one Edgar Jacobi No way.
It wasn't him.
There he is.
He's pissed.
convinced him that you should be treated medically in a hospital.
I believe that'd be good for you. I don't know.
Tell me what you see. Oh, that's like his mask.
A pretty butterfly.
Liar.
Who are you kidding here?
Did you get that at home? No.
I should have HAD THAT ABORTION.
HOLY [ __ ] I HEARD THIS GUY'S mom was a [ __ ] Aw.
Hey, you think she'd suck my dick for a dollar?
Oh, wow.
>> [screaming] >> Oh, that is so grim. You don't like me.
All right, why is that exactly? You're fat.
Broke a man's arm to get a tip.
Led me to the missing girl's location.
Okay, so he's doing good work. He's trying to help people.
And then I found her. No.
What the [ __ ] They put her in there?
Oh my god.
What the Surprise.
Oh.
Got the dog. WHO THE [ __ ] ARE YOU?
WHAT THE [ __ ] DO YOU WANT?
You killed my dogs, man.
You don't get to be sad about that. You think I had something to do with that girl?
I found that.
What evidence have you got? That's nothing.
The dog was what? Eating the little girl? What? ARREST ME.
He's not the cops. I've got a problem, man. [ __ ] take me in. I need help.
>> No.
I'm with you on THIS ONE.
NO.
>> [screaming] >> AH!
SORRY.
>> [laughter] >> DOGS GET PUT DOWN.
She's Oh my god.
Whatever was left of Walter Kovacs died that night with that little girl. Oh, wow. Okay.
From now on, there was only Rorschach.
Hey, you pretty famous, right?
Oh, [ __ ] Oh god. Oh god. Ain't that right?
That's right.
Did you say, BIG BOY?
HE'S GOING IN THERE. OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD.
>> [screaming] >> YOU'RE WITH ME. YOU'RE >> [laughter] >> WE'RE WHY AM I ROOTING FOR THIS GUY?
He's doing good work. No, I don't understand.
>> [gasps] >> I love her long hair. I want super long hair.
Oh, this is their old little spaceship.
Aw, it still works.
Don't take it out for a spin. That would be crazy.
>> [screaming] >> Uh-oh.
>> [laughter] >> Lori!
Yeah, you ask her to move in and she sets your place on fire.
I feel so bad.
>> Oh, oh, don't worry.
It's happened before.
Comedian did it back in '77. Oop.
How'd you ever afford all this stuff, anyway?
Well, my dad was in corporate banking and uh Rich dad.
You want to try those on?
The mask?
Now, nobody can tell who you are. Magic.
They amplify the spectral range.
Thermal imaging.
They work even better in the dark.
Go turn the lights off.
I remember no matter how black it got, whenever I looked through those goggles, everything was as clear as day. This must be the way John [music] sees the world.
Aw, don't talk about your ex.
Put those away when you're done.
No. He said nope.
I'mma head [laughter] out.
John sees a lot of things.
But he doesn't see me.
Oh god.
She's going for it.
He hasn't said anything.
She's just having to tell him what to [laughter] do.
Oh no.
He doesn't seem that into this girl. Is he?
Okay.
A tiny little belt.
Oh god.
I don't know how he's going to feel about being a rebound.
Uh-oh. Dan.
What's wrong?
>> [sighs] >> They're talking about your boy on the telly.
Yeah, I just need a couple minutes.
Oh god.
Oh hell.
>> Oh golly.
Big figure.
Small world.
How long now, Lloyd? Almost 15 years, Mr. Fegur.
15 years.
Roshak.
That guy you burned is dying. Oh.
He's dying?
You die by inches.
He doesn't seem bothered at all.
Relax, Lines.
Soon.
Oh my god. Yeah, it doesn't sound like he gives a [ __ ] at all, actually.
Oh my god, no.
What is happening?
Is this where John is?
I guess he can see this happening.
Uh What the [ __ ] >> [laughter] >> Wow.
Always dreaming.
He says John's going to [ __ ] me up if he knows I kissed his girl.
Now he's naked as well.
Is everything all right?
I'm tired of being afraid.
Aw.
Afraid of this god damn suit.
He wants to bring it back.
So to hell with it.
Let's take Archie out.
You're serious? I used to be a master avenger, too. Remember?
>> Avenger?
Let's go. Go out for a spin.
Wait.
So he's like our old man.
The nose and everything.
Damn, girl.
Yeah, she doesn't wear a mask.
No secret identity.
Woo.
Look at the big smile on his face.
Let's go.
Aw, they're going to go and fight crime.
Is there people in there?
Aw.
Did he put the fire out?
No.
Oh, it's a water tank.
Very clever.
Help them, kids.
Oh my god, there's so many people.
Let's go.
Can they all fit on the the the plane?
Oh [ __ ] >> [snorts] >> Ow.
What a cool shot.
Yay.
Who cares? World War III could start tomorrow.
Right.
Oh god.
Hallelujah.
>> [laughter] >> They put it on autopilot. Oh god.
Where's John watching all of this?
>> [laughter] >> I couldn't tell if John was on the moon or like on a different planet completely.
Oh my goodness.
John's up there on the moon watching [laughter] this happen.
I love how they went out to do like some good work.
>> [snorts] >> And then they're like after one piece of work, they're like, "No, we're going to fuck."
>> [laughter] >> We won't worry about everybody else out there who needs our help.
They don't have anything like this in Marvel movies.
>> [laughter] >> Oh, that's the guy he killed with the the oil.
[ __ ] he's dead.
>> [cheering] >> Chaos.
Oh, Jesus.
Oh, they're just waiting.
We thought we'd bring you a little housewarming gift. Something from the machine shop.
Uh-oh. He sliced open his lungs. He's next on the block.
Fat chance.
>> [laughter and gasps] >> Oh, I kind of I kind of like Rorschach.
Your hands. Uh-oh.
>> [screaming] >> Owie.
I'm sorry, Laurence, but you're in the way of my revenge.
>> No, they're going to cut his [ __ ] arms off or something crazy.
No.
No. NO.
>> [screaming] >> GUYS, what the [ __ ] is this movie? No one told me this was an 18-rated movie with very graphic sex and violence.
>> [laughter] [gasps] >> Oh my god. I feel that we have an obligation to our fraternity. I think we're going to spring Rorschach.
>> Oh, they want to get him out. Yeah, but breaking into a maximum-security prison isn't different than putting out a My god, they look so good lit by the moonlight. It'll be more fun.
Oh, he's a changed man.
Rorschach might not need your guys' help.
There you go.
Oh lord.
Your move.
Yeah, I would run if I was you as well.
Geez Louise.
Rorschach, your lift is here.
Oh god.
OOPS.
DON'T TELL ME.
THERE YOU GO. RETURN, DOCTOR.
Tell me, What do you see?
>> [laughter] >> His smile is so good.
The prison guards are going to be GRATEFUL FOR THIS.
WOO!
I LOVE THESE SCENES. THIS reminds me of that scene in 300 as well where it's like Gerard Butler taking on like tens, hundreds of people at once. It's all slow-motion flips, kicks, abs.
>> [laughter] >> I need to watch 300 again. I might watch it tonight.
>> [screaming] >> Uh-oh.
She can take care of herself.
War shark. We're here to save you.
Oh, for Christ's sake.
Oh god.
Oh, that's so cool. Such a cool shot.
Let's get out of here.
Oh dear. Oh dear.
Again in the gang back together. War jailbreak.
Don't worry about it.
Okay? Oh, yeah. Just don't worry about it.
Oh! TV said you were on Mars. I am on Mars. Oh.
Lori, don't.
>> Dan, trust me.
>> Don't go to Mars.
>> to go.
Geez.
Yeah, give her something to breathe. In case you think something slipped my mind.
It won't happen again.
Oh my god.
We're on Mars.
Why are we on Mars? You've gone too soft.
Too trusting. Especially with women. Oh.
I'm sorry. I Come on. He's a real friend.
You are a good friend.
I know it can be difficult with me sometimes. Do you think he actually appreciates someone being up front with him like that? During the transnational.
Anyone heard of it?
Couple of suits walk into a bar. Back off, Frost. I'll stick this glass in YOUR SQUISHY FACE.
>> [groaning] >> I GOT A HIRE FROM THE OLD LADY.
TOLD by whom? My contact.
>> Miss Latorre.
He said hiring against cons is part OF THE COMPANY PROGRAM. GIVE PEOPLE A SECOND CHANCE. GOD, PLEASE LET GO. I'M TELLING YOU. SO THE cancer thing is not real.
I think they're making the cancer thing up. But why would I save a world I no longer have any stake in?
Well, all cuz she broke up with him?
My red world here, now, means more to me than your blue one. So he wants to start a new world on Mars where he's the god and just be naked all the time.
It's time, gentlemen. Oh [ __ ] Here we go. Nocturnal proclivities entice a man with everything out into the night.
Maybe he keeps on file.
Why does he speak like the way he structures some of his sentences?
It's like he's writing notes, but then reading them just as the notes. Whoever owns Pyramid could be giving these people cancer.
Oh, wow.
Password.
Nope.
Got a site profile on Manhattan. Let's hear it. Ing ties were to be severed.
>> Promises.
No way.
Pyramid.
Lots of money.
No. Movie, please explain it to me.
Movie.
What in life does not deserve celebrating?
This is the new Karnak.
>> Is he's he doing all of this?
I am ashamed.
Ashamed that you must now share such an adequate reward.
Is he going to kill them all?
Buried alive with them in sand-floored chambers.
Sleep well, gentlemen.
What?
So he's been orchestrating this all in the background?
Final entry. Final. Fiennes behind everything.
>> Yes.
I hope the world survives long enough for this journal to reach you.
I lived my life free of compromise. He sent it to someone. Can't you just tell me how this all ends and save us the trouble?
It ends with you in tears. Oh. You have to stop this.
Everyone will die.
And the universe will not even notice.
>> Oh, this [ __ ] guy.
This guy.
The existence of life is a highly overrated phenomenon.
He just wants to start fresh. So, tell me how would all of this be greatly improved by an oil pipeline?
For a miracle.
Miracles by their definition are meaningless.
God. Yeah, I'd be so sick of him as well. It does have >> Just stop your [ __ ] Just be normal.
You could never just have a normal conversation with him like, "Hi, how's your day been?
Do you want anything from the shop?" You complain that I refuse to see life on life's terms.
Yet, you continuously refuse to see things from my perspective.
>> How could she possibly see things from your perspective?
You want me to see things your way? Go ahead. Show me. Do that thing you do.
Zap. Why don't you call your friend Eddie? Maybe he can give you a better life.
Ouch.
You're the comedian, right?
You're pretty cool in there. Uh Please don't get with him.
Are there no depths you won't sink to?
Jesus Christ, Sally. And the guy I talked to was an old friend's daughter. What did he mean by that pause? Years later you let him finish the job. What? Were you drunk or just lonely? Is Eddie her dad?
No, not him.
The comedian was your father.
[ __ ] He said it would end in tears.
She just [ __ ] up the his whole Mars plan.
Oh my god, it's like Hot Fuzz.
>> My life is just one big joke. Wow.
Will you smile if I admit I was wrong? Oh.
I've longed to witness such an [music] event and yet I neglect that. He could do it.
>> Inhuman coupling. Oh. And out of that contradiction against unfathomable [music] odds, it's you.
He thinks she's a miracle.
It's like turning air into gold.
Wow.
That's very romantic, Jon. And so I was wrong. Will he come and help? Now dry your eyes.
Let's go home. Oh my god, this [ __ ] guy.
The smiley face.
How is So we got like two story lines to wrap up. We need to figure out who killed the comedian and we need to stop nuclear war. Daniel, you're coming in too low.
Oh god.
Oh my god, this little snowy outfit.
And we don't HAVE TIME TO WASTE.
YOU NEED SOMETHING WARMER.
FIND LIKE THIS.
Get a big coat on.
What are they up to in there?
He must know they're on the way. He's smart.
There they are.
Adrian's a pacifist.
He's a vegetarian, for Christ's sake.
>> [laughter] >> He's never killed anyone in his life.
Hitler was vegetarian. You're squeamish, leave him to me. We won't get second chance.
Let's go.
I wonder who actually killed the comedian. Like, was it him? Surely he sent someone to do it for him.
Take off your winter outfit.
Stealth mission.
Yeah, there's no way you can sneak up on this dude, surely.
Oh.
A laser pen?
Oh.
Oh, god.
Gentlemen. Oh, his outfit's cool.
You killed comedian. May he rest in peace.
Blake figured it out first.
Oh.
Blake found out what I was doing here in Karnak, and by the time he visited poor Moloch, he was cracking badly. Mhm. Then I neutralized John. No easy task.
I put roughly two billion dollars into Tachyon research to block John's vision.
Woah.
The sudden flood of emotion John felt when he came to believe he'd given cancer to the people he loved.
That is so evil.
And your mass killer theory.
One you follow with the tenacity of a true sociopath. I tipped off the police.
Oh, no.
That hat keeps coming off, but he keeps putting it back [laughter] on.
Nuclear war, human extinction.
Classic bad guy. Moscow, Hong Kong, disintegrated in an instant. Damn. The world's punishment for flirting with World War III. John wouldn't do that.
Aw, he's going to put it on Jon.
Humanity's savage nature will inevitably lead to global annihilation.
So, in order to save this planet, I had to trick it. No!
Killing millions >> to save billions. No, I don't like it.
Do you seriously think I'd explain my master stroke to you if there were even the slightest possibility you could affect the outcome?
Is it already happening? I triggered it 35 minutes ago.
>> Oh, no!
No!
So, they've blown up everywhere else.
New York next.
Maybe Jon can turn back time or something. I don't know the extent of his powers.
Always comes back to clocks.
Oh, wow.
Zoom.
How eerie.
Oh my god, everything's Ah!
>> [screaming] >> Oh, dear. Jon. Jon.
Aw, they held each other.
Why the hell didn't We got a launch detection.
It's not the Soviets. Exactly.
It's not Jon. No!
>> It was generated by Dr. Manhattan. No!
Interference.
Cataclysmic interference.
He didn't see this. Shortly. This wasn't caused by nuclear warheads.
It was me. No, EVEN HE THINKS IT WAS HIM.
Not directly.
It was made to look like I did it. Okay.
Phew.
Oh my god, it's like a wasteland.
John.
>> I know. Must stop him. Kill Blake. Kill millions.
>> Wait here.
John, can you fix this?
God, I feel so tense.
The tachyons were close. Why's he running around? The delights of uncertainty.
Oh no. Oh my god, can he like undo it?
He's not undoing John's powers, is he?
Oh my god.
SHE.
SHEM IN THE ARM?
Double tap, always.
He's got the bullet. He's got to Yeah, [ __ ] Double tap, double tap.
Oh, girl.
Failing to prevent Earth's salvation is your only triumph.
What? I'm disappointed in you, Adrian.
Oh, no.
Why is he huge now? That was the first trick I learned.
It didn't kill Osterman.
God, he's scary.
The world's smartest man poses no more threat to me than does its smartest termite.
Oh my god, he cooked him. Cooked.
Another ultimate weapon.
Yes. Mhm.
>> Oh, no.
In an act of evil perpetrated by Dr. Manhattan himself. No.
Putting aside our past differences, we have both pledged to unite Oh.
against this common enemy. So, he stopped the war cuz they're all going to unite against an enemy.
Oh, no. I saved the Earth from hell.
We both have.
This is as much your victory as it is mine.
Bamboozled.
They're all getting along. Peace based on a lie, but peace [snorts] nonetheless. He's right. What?
You taught me the value of life.
So, he's going to have to go live on Mars again.
We must remain silent.
What?
Keep your own secrets.
No.
You understand, don't you?
Without condoning or condemning, I understand.
What the [ __ ] I thought he just had some epiphany that life was really, really valuable, and now he's okay with killing a bunch of people.
Whoa.
If you'd killed him from the start, none of this would have happened.
Wait, is he But I can't change human nature. Oh.
Of course you must protect my new utopia.
What's one more body in its foundations?
Oh, I feel for Rorschach.
He's sad.
DO IT!
>> [screaming] >> NO!
NO!
>> WHAT THE HELL?
AW.
I like Rorschach.
I thought you said you cared about life again.
I do.
I think maybe I'll create some. Oh, I don't like that.
Bye, Laurie.
Laurie, forget about that blue man.
Avatar-looking ass.
>> [screaming] >> Oh god.
>> [groaning] >> He just allowed it.
Come on.
Aw. You have an idealized mankind, but you've you've deformed it. You mutilated it.
Oh [ __ ] That's the real practical joke.
>> [laughter] >> I'm so bamboozled by this.
He's just going to leave him there?
Sure you don't want to drink?
I'm okay.
Oh, she's visiting mom.
I know that Eddie Blake was my father.
Oop.
People's lives take them strange places, they do strange things, and well, sometimes they can't talk about them.
She's very understanding.
I just want you to know that you never did anything wrong by me.
Aw.
Why I wasn't mad at him.
Because he gave me you. Aw, mom.
I love you.
Oh, wow.
Thought it was Jupiter. Oh, Sally.
>> [laughter] >> He's such a dork. I love him. Freshen up.
I'll be right back.
Hit that.
Think I've got everything working.
All of our GT systems are upgraded.
Finished the tinkering for now.
There's always more tinkering to be done.
Are we going to be all right?
No.
Long as people think John's still watching us, we'll be all right.
Nothing ends.
Nothing ever ends.
Are they rebuilding?
What sort of John propaganda is there going to be all around this city now?
Oh.
Seymour.
We got nothing to write about anymore.
No drama. It's like living in a god damn global hippie commune. Hell yeah.
Seymour, we don't dignify absurdities with coverage. This is still America, damn it. Who wants a cowboy in the White House?
Take some initiative. Run whatever you like. Leave it entirely in your hands.
Thank you.
Oh, he's got the journal. Oh, no.
1985 tonight a comedian died in New York.
Oh my god.
I don't know what to make of that whole movie.
>> [laughter] >> I just have to go take a walk after that because the film was so long. I kind of think that maybe going into this particular film blind was not the best idea. Like usually when I react to a movie, or I just even when I'm watching a movie, to be honest, I try and avoid trailers, um especially when I'm watching an older movie, because when you Google or YouTube stuff, like trailers or posters or anything, you're almost always going to get a spoiler.
So, I try and avoid stuff as much as possible. So, I really I didn't even have a concept of like a logo or a piece of key art for Watchmen. I had no idea.
I just knew that it was a superhero movie by Zack Snyder. And I feel like it took me a really long time to get up to speed with the characters in this movie and like who was who, who was whose friend, the storyline kind of felt a bit confusing to me in the earlier part of the film, especially when you're going back and forth between timelines and whatnot. But then again, I do think that might have been intentional with it being somewhat of a murder mystery, especially in the earlier part of the movie. The viewer is probably supposed to be not confused, but you're not supposed to know everything, cuz you're going to find out things as you go along. I don't really know how well this movie was received uh by a general audience when it was released. I find myself drawing a lot of comparisons with The Boys, and I apologize if I make loads of references to that, but it is very prevalent in my mind right now, because I've been watching the new series. I'm a huge fan of The Boys. I really love the kind of anti-superhero thing, dark sort of satirical look at what we've sort of been told about superheroes in general for the last however many years. But where The Boys is more like a dark comedy, Watchmen is very dark and serious with a lot of very dark themes. It feels very different. This is a very different movie compared to everything that we've watched on the channel so far. It's the first 18-rated movie.
So, a lot of dicks, >> [laughter] >> lot of butts. Not sure how much of that will have made the final edit, but we will see. I didn't have a lot of fun watching that movie, but I don't think that movie is supposed to be fun. So, where I came into this with my kind of Marvel-esque brain on, where I'm watching a summer blockbuster superhero movie, and it's going to be a lot of fun with some silly quips and big action sequences, and in the end everything will work out. I've kind of been bamboozled, I think I said a thousand times, with this much darker, more serious look at what superheroes could be. There wasn't really any standout characters for me, apart from maybe John, the blue guy.
There wasn't any character that I really loved, and I don't mean in a way where I'm like, I love them, I think they're good, I agree with what they're doing.
Like, I love Homelander as a character, even though he's awful. I think he's an amazing character. But, I don't find many of the ones from Watchmen to be particularly memorable. What I did love about this movie was all the action sequences.
Really reminded me of Zack Snyder's work in 300, where you get like the slow-motion, sort of over-the-top movements, great sound design. Like, that was awesome, especially towards the end of the movie, where it got a lot more action, maybe they go to the prison. Like, there's so many cool sequences in that, which I really, really enjoyed. This is kind of one of those movies where I feel like now I need to go and watch maybe like a 20- to 30-minute YouTube video called like Watchmen explained.
>> [laughter] >> And that's okay, because I love those kind of YouTube videos, they're some of my favorite to watch. I'm not sure of the background of the Watchmen story, whether it's like a series of comic books, or maybe just one comic book. I'd be interested to hear more about maybe if there's been other adaptations. I'm really glad I watched it. I enjoyed it overall, I think. I don't think I would watch that one again, but definitely a very interesting take on the superhero genre, and maybe a slightly more realistic take of what superheroes might be like if they were in real life. What do you think of Watchmen? I am actually really excited to hear your thoughts on this one because I imagine it would be quite a divisive movie. I kind of just want to go and watch 300 again now.
