Across all human cultures throughout history, a consistent understanding exists that the dead require specific acknowledgment through naming and remembrance, as community relationships extend beyond death and failing to properly honor the deceased causes harm to everyone involved.

Why Do Global Traditions All Have the Same View and Rituals of Death?Ajouté :
Across radically different cultures on every inhabited continent, across thousands of years of human history, the same understanding appears. The dead need something from us. Violent death needs more. Community is the container, and relationships don't end at death.
And when we fail in this obligation, when we let the dead go adrift, unnamed and unattended, something goes wrong for everyone. So, let me pull out the common threads here because I think they're important. First, the dead must be named. Not as an abstraction, not as our fallen heroes or the brave men and women who gave their lives. Named specifically, with their particular history, their particular face, their particular presence acknowledged. When you see these these memorial walls, and you see hundreds of names, thousands of names, go to Gettysburg, they're all named. Go to the Twin Towers, they're all named. You go to any wall where there's a memorial for the dead, every single one of them is named, and that is purposeful.
