Not every iconic photograph says what we think it says

[00:00:00]I'm often interested in the way the media talks about what they like to call iconic photographs. And the media likes to do that a lot.

[00:00:14]And they often assume that if an image is iconic, it is communicating something universal. And I don't think that's the case. I think it's often that the image is a kind of placeholder for actually quite a lot of conflicting thoughts around a situation or a moment in history or whatever. Which is a can be iconic, but not for the reasons that the media likes to tell you that they're iconic.
