The film’s massive success underscores a growing disconnect where populist nostalgia effectively overrides both critical consensus and moral controversy. It proves that a powerful legacy, when packaged as spectacle, remains commercially bulletproof regardless of the artist's complicated history.

Box Office - 2026 Michael Opening Weekend! Oscars? Billion? Daredevil Born Again S2 ViewershipAjouté :
Hello and welcome to this week's movie math where Michael after tripping over its first hurdle critic scores it cleared the second one with ease. It bounded over the second hurdle the box office the audience scores although there are still hurdles to go. We're going to break it all down. But yes, it was a Hollywood happy beginning for Michael opening to 97 million domestic and that some feel that by the time the final numbers come in on Monday, it might be at 100 the century mark. It would be beautiful. It's beautiful already, but that would that would just like be a perfect ring to it. That makes it the biggest liveaction opening of the year to date and shatters shatters the previous record for the biggest opening ever for a music biopic.
And unlike a number of other Hollywood movies these days, Michael has overseas appeal. Uh making for a global de debut of 217.4 million with the movie now playing in every country except Japan, South Korea, and Russia. And those first two could represent substantial pockets of cash to come based on how Bohemian Raps City performed in those two countries.
Michael Jackson still has fans, a lot of them. And what's more, a lot of those fans have passed their love of The King of Pop down to the next generation with families making up 36% of the audience.
And bigger kids, too. Bigger kids. uh with 55% of the audience 18 to 34 even though Michael Jackson was killed by his private physician 17 years ago. So they only were familiar with his music uh at a very young age. Uh the black community showed up for I'm curious. I'd love to hear your experience going to the theater this weekend. I'd love to hear your relationship with Michael Jackson or lack of relationship with Michael Jackson because you know it has been a minute since he has been a global icon and so much has happened obviously and we're going to discuss all that but I'd love to hear your thoughts down below.
Um so the black community showed up for Michael Jackson big time with Latino and Caucasian audiences also making a solid showing proving that Michael Jackson to this day still has broad appeal. And interestingly, the audience leaned slightly female at 61%.
And premium screens, wow, almost half of his opening weekend uh came from premium screens. And this is a very good sign for Avengers Doomsday. Only 16% of that was from IMAX screens, meaning that other premium screens, soon to be labeled Infinity Vision with that sticker, uh are doing quite well. That's amazing.
Uh, this is a great opening act for what Hollywood is hoping will be a very successful summer movie season, which officially kicks off next week. Trust me on that, actually.
All right. So, and as always, thanks to our friends at Factor for thinking of us and giving us a sweet deal. By the way, be sure to also check out the video I put up on Friday, which is my preview of the summer movie season, and which movies I think will be hits and which ones I don't. You'll see what they need to make to break even, etc. And how many movies I think have a shot at a billion dollars. And I wonder if Michael does.
This is a very great This is a fantastic opening and you would think it was on its way, right? Although Super Mario opened bigger. That's the biggest opening of the year uh overall animation or live action and that's, you know, struggling to hit a billion. You know, it might come close, but it's struggling.
So, but still, you know, like with such a strong start, surely Michael will make like 7 to 800 million, right? I don't know. All right. So, I think the most immediate concern is Michael going to be seriously front-loaded. Did everyone who wanted to see the movie see it this weekend, including multiple times already?
Uh, how many times did you see Michael this weekend? I, in fact, saw it twice.
I couldn't make the press screening, so I went to the Wednesday early access and then I saw it again on Saturday. And to be honest with you, the crowd on Wednesday was more fun, right? like is the party already starting to draw to a close? Um although I have to say even on Saturday, what was very fun about that was that it's been a really long time since I've seen the concession stand area as crowded as it was. It was like being at the freaking airport. There were so many people online. It was really cool. It was nice to see the movie theater that crowded. Again, Hollywood's like all summer long. Uh and I have to say both times for both showings I opted to see the movie in Dolby. I like IMAX, but the seats eventually Disney's like, "Yes, those seats are uncomfortable. How are you going to get out if you need to go to the bathroom?" Dolby and other premium screens have more space. Yes, go to those. What premium screens do you like?
And are you starting to Maybe you didn't go to premium screens before. Are you starting to get more into it? Which ones are you enjoying?
But speaking of premium screens, that's yet another problem because this Thursday, Michael loses all of the premium screens to The Devil Wears Proda 2 except IMAX. Although, as you can see, that's only 16%. So, that's a significant loss of premium screens. So, that's another reason audiences might be like, "Ah, we missed the party. We'll just wait." Bohemian Raps City, still the gold standard for total box office for music biopics, uh, might not have opened as big as Michael, but had incredible holds week to week and benefited from playing over Thanksgiving and Christmas. Uh, meanwhile, Michael is about to get hit with a tsunami of big summer movies. And also, digital and streaming is more popular than ever before. I was going to mention it later, I'll mention it now. Pre-orders for Michael on digital already very high. So people might be like, "Oh, I'm excited to see that later."
Uh, so plus a lot of people really have seem to have it out for this movie.
So as we saw with the critic score, there are a number of people, particularly people in influential positions, let's say, including critics, who don't think that Michael Jackson is a person who should be celebrated, which interestingly enough mirrors how a lot of critics felt about Joker, right? that got very poor reviews because a lot of critics felt that this was a fictional character that should not be put in a sympathetic light. We'll talk about the Oscars. You know, obviously very interesting way things played out eventually. Joker went on to make a billion dollars, but uh so we're we're going to get to the Oscars, but so yes, so a lot of people were saying you shouldn't be celebrating Michael Jackson. And even though a number of movie goers clearly have not agreed with that, all weekend long the media was like, "Are you sure? What about this?"
And there was just negative headline after negative headline ABOUT THE FILM.
ALL weekend long, I saw it in a number of places.
Now, one of those headlines was quite serious. It was new allegations that broke on Friday, just as the movie hit theaters. coming from a family that knew Michael Jackson for quite a long time and had publicly defended him for years.
But after they saw 2019's uh documentary Leaving Neverland on HBO, they said, in their words that it deprogrammed them and they felt that they had been abused.
So they reached out to the Jackson family and the Michael Jackson estate and they reached a deal for $16 million which was paid out over five years.
Well, the five years are up because that that deal was made in 2020. And it seems that the family is using the release of the film to renegotiate that deal. Uh surely feeling to some degree that that will help get the deal closed because surely the Jackson, this is just speculation on that, but you know, the timing is like very bad for the Jackson estate, very good for them. Uh we'll see if the Jackson estate can make those headlines go away. And I'm sure some of you will feel they should not be able to because that's very serious accusations.
We're going to talk about whether or not they should make a second film. All right. So, such again very complicated situation. Now, Leaving Neverland, how many of you saw that documentary? It's not currently available to watch and I'll tell you why in a minute. But that is what convinced a number of people of Michael Jackson's guilt even though again he was never found guilty in a court of law. But right after it was released on HBO, the Jackson estate sued and um they basically won and they and and in the settlement with HBO, HBO agreed that that documentary would never be seen by anybody until 2029 when the rights revert back to filmmaker Dan Reed who did a lot of interviews this weekend. And one of the things that he said uh in in you know beyond you know because his film couldn't speak for how he feels very strongly about Michael Jackson's guilt. So he he spoke out on that his on his on his own and he also said that once the deadline comes and he gets the rights back he said he's slapping that thing up on YouTube so as many people can see it as possible.
So as the film points out Michael wanted to be mysterious yet so are the allegations surrounding him. again never found guilty in a court of law but he he and his estate so when he was alive and then after he died his estate have had to make a lot of agreements and they've had to do a lot of payouts that are substantial as you can see. So, there's so much smoke here that even though Sony has a very long and again complicated relationship with Michael Jackson and to this day is making gazillions of dollars off of his music, they didn't even try to get this movie to release. No studio was willing to take the risk. Uh although it was a very different movie when it was first being shopped around and it directly dealt with the allegations. Uh but Lionsgate is the only one that was willing to do it. So I think there's always the concern that at any moment all this negativity and it has affected some people but it might finally break through and spill into all the movie goers like there you know it's it's at what point is there a tipping point that you might be you know you might have like oh I would maybe be willing to go but now I just now I feel icky about it again and I said in my review and thank you so much for all the kind words that you guys had about my review. I worked very hard on trying to point out the nuances of the film I feel that I think the film is responsible in addressing these issues. Um but obviously for a number of people it doesn't go far enough. All right. Then beyond you know the controversies as a film can Michael get anyone to take it seriously?
Last year when Sinners came out, another strong film from black filmmakers with a powerful connection and meaning to the black community. There were a number of articles, I'm sure many of you remember, in the trades downplaying its success while instead highlighting its one weakness overseas box office. And there was a lot of chatter on social media as well with people being dismissive of the film's artistic merit. And then when weapons from the same studio Warner Brothers came out a few months later, those same detractors well weaponized Weapons and said, "This is a much better movie. This is the film that should be celebrated instead of Sinners." And I thought it was horrible to see those two movies pitted against each other. I was worried and I said so at the time that Sinners was going to get Barbie and in fact it did at the Golden Globes despite all of its nominations. just like Barbie, winning only a music and box office achievement award. But it was a long and drama-filled award season. And by the end of it, when all the dust, the gold dust had settled, Sinners was not only the most nominated film for the Oscars of all time, but it won four of those, including best actor. Rammy Malik won best actor, too. And fans are hoping for the same result for Jafar Jackson.
But with this Rotten Tomatoes score, well, Bohemian Raps City had a low Rotten Tomato score and so did Joker where walking Phoenix also won. Isn't that interesting? But this critic score is really low. It's really low. And a lot of people who have a problem with Michael Jackson again are in the industry in the media who, you know, who have a lot of sway here, which I think is kind of hypocritical because Michael Jackson so perfectly represents the true damage that Hollywood can do to a person. And again, I think the movie illustrates that quite well.
All right, so we have to see what other movies come out this year. It's very early, obviously, for awards season. And it's hard for a movie that comes out this early, but you know, Sinners was an early release, Everything Everywhere All at Once, so it can be done. And so, we'll have to see what else comes out.
But I think at this point, considering that really low Rotten Tomato score, Jafar Jackson should just should just hope to get nominated. That in and of itself would be a big win. He might get the Ariana Grande treatment, but that's okay. Ariana's doing just fine even without an Oscar. I'm not sure what other Oscars Michael could be nominated for. Coleman Domingo, he's very good, but I think he's played this role a lot before. Uh, we have to see again how competitive that category is. Um perhaps I think hair and makeup and costume design are strong contenders because those two departments helped Jafar with his jaw-dropping trans transformation.
So what do you think of Michael's Oscar chances?
Even though he comes from a musical family and this is his very first acting role, Jafar Jackson would like to continue with acting. I don't know about a lead. You know, it's interesting. He so loses himself in the role. We don't have a strong sense of who he is, right?
Although I do think he's a very strong actor. I think his performance is incredible. By the way, I'd like to go on record saying I think he should be nominated for a best actor Oscar. And uh I think he has there's a strong argument to be made for him winning. I think he would fit in with those other winners quite well. But so on the red car or the well I think it was the black carpet for uh Michael right at the premiere he was asked you know well everybody was asked but they said what genre would you like to do next and Jafar said horror and I was like the Jackson family is not only a strong music family but they're a strong business family and horror is a fabulous idea for Jafar Jackson he should give producer Jason Bloom a call or fellow horror producer Roy Lee or since he has such a strong connection to black audiences. Maybe he should reach out to Ryan Cougler and Jordan Peele.
What do you see for Jafar Jackson's future? I would love to see him in another movie. I'd like to see if he's as good as I think he is. I'm I'm very curious. If I were a studio, uh a director or a producer or an agent or a manager, I I would be interested in at least his next couple of roles. Uh so I hope he turns out better than Robbie Malik did. Did you see him in that Nermberg movie? He was just chewing scenery like crazy. All right. And he was a horrible Bond villain. Ah, did not that did not work out. All right. So, yes, even in 2026 though, the black uh film community has to stick together because there were rumors this weekend trying to take down Michael director Antoine Fukqua. Uh some of the people associated with the film said they were untrue, but again, it was a very negative headline. But I wouldn't be too worried about Fukua's uh future with because he has his amazing resume and this opening weekend to vouch for him. I don't think he'll ever be considered an aur director. I don't think he's going to get nominated for best director. I don't think that's even what he claims to be. He's a very strong commercial director who can deliver. I think he's a good he must be a good actor's director because he you know he's he got some great performances in a couple of his films and since he continues to deliver hits over the years he'll work for as long as he wants to. Now as for Coleman Domingo he has certainly become Hollywood's go-to guy for villains and he's very good at playing them but he's getting other work too. He's in Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day and returns for season two of Netflix's The Four Seasons both this summer. And he was just on Saturday Night Live where I thought a few of those sketches were really very brilliant and I think uh were different because I think Coleman Domingo has a different vibe than most hosts on Saturday Night Live. So, I thought it was great he was able to bring that to the show. He rose to fame on streaming. First, Fear of the Walking Dead and then Euphoria. Two shows I never watched. So, my introduction to Coleman Domingo was actually The Color Purple, the remake, and I was blown away by his performance. I was like, who is this guy who can play a villain so richly and with such nuance? What was your first introduction to Coleman Domingo? He has a very good career. He could probably work forever the way he's set up. Do you think he should try to level up to lead? And what's it going to take for him to win an Oscar? I do feel he's slightly in a little bit of a a a small rut because he's always kind of playing the same character now. So, he's gonna have to push himself just a little bit further. I think if although this could be an Oscar winning role, he's very talented, undeniably so. I think it depends on the campaign that they run and again the competition that there is.
Now, should they make a Michael sequel?
This is a tough This is a tough question to answer. When I got out of the first time, I when I saw the movie the first time, I was like, I'm all in. You got to finish the story. But with this new round of allegations, truly disturbing to read. I think the subject matter, no matter where you fall on whether or not Michael Jackson is guilty, the subject matter is too difficult to navigate, particularly in a movie that's supposed to also have fun songs that you sing and dance to. I mean, that's just a really I think that's going to come off not well.
Uh, also, a friend of mine yesterday pointed out that Joe Jackson was actually far more violent towards his children than he is depicted in the movie. And so, um, you know, they managed to kind of like make it work this time. I don't think they should test their luck. This movie, this movie celebrates the creation of Michael Jackson and it also foreshadows how it would all eventually come crashing down.
It ends saying his story continues, which obviously means they'd like to make a second film and they've shot a lot of it actually because they had the legal issues and had to uh split it into two.
But let movie goers take that in a different way. His story continues, right?
You know, he lived longer. His music lives on to this day. And you know what?
This is an invitation for you to look into what happened to Michael afterwards, as many people have been doing this weekend. And then you can draw your own conclusions. I think that might be a more appropriate way to handle it. So, what do you think? Do you think it's a good idea to make the second film or do you think they should leave it the way it is?
As for the rest of the top 10, Super Mario Galaxy is trying to get to a billion man. It's still It's still crawling there, right? It's on day 25.
And on day 26, the first movie hit a billion dollars, the fastest ever to a billion for an ANIMATED MOVIE. BUT I don't think Super Mario Galaxy is going to make 170 million in a day. The sequel did just hit Japan where it opened a little under the first movie. It opened well, but not as strong as the first movie. Super Mario Brothers went on to make a h 100red million in Japan. So, cuz it opened lower, this will probably do, you know, less. Maybe 70 or 80 or maybe 60. Who knows? Still, Super Mario Galaxy, I think, has a shot at a billion. But if I I think if it can just close the gap to 900 and have a nine in front of it, that's good enough. Super Mario uh creator, right, uh Miyamoto was perplexed by a second round of even harsher criticism with this film, especially when he argued the movies are helping Hollywood. Well, I think that while it's clearly an advantage to have the team behind these games involved with adapting them, it's a balance with having stronger narratives for movies and shows, especially when the original game is so light on story. I mean, it's not like it's The Last of Us where you're like, "Why are you messing it up?
It was great the way it was." I mean, I don't I don't know. I mean, they had some really clever changes the first season. They just really I think they became a little too agenda driven with the second season. It was a mess because, you know, even though Joel does get killed off in the beginning of the second game, I still found it a very compelling and interesting story. I also don't think they should have split it into two seasons because uh you know I think a having Abby to balance things out and they also miscast Abby horribly.
All right, whatever. All right, what a mess. I I feel bad because the second game I thought was so the game itself, the cut scenes were incredible. As I always point out, in the words of iconic comic book writer Alan Moore, while there's a lot of crossover, it's a very different skill set to write for different mediums. It's not to say that someone can't write for multiple mediums, but they can't go into a new one or a different one assuming that their skill set will serve them just as well. They have to learn how to write, you know, you have to, you know, you have to broaden your skills. Like it's different to write for books, even short stories versus, you know, long form uh for but for books to comic books to movies to streaming and then also to video games, they're very different. And that should be, you know, don't let that trip you up. What do you think?
Meanwhile, Project Hail Mary just passed $600 million. And what do you know? It's going to finish right around The Martian, the other Andy Weir movie. If only it had clicked more overseas, it would have, I think, been able to get substantially more. Uh, well, Hoppers had the second best hold of The Weekend.
It's going to It's about to hit digital, too, by the way. And considering their budgets, both Lee Cronin's The Mummy, he's having the last laugh, and The Drama are very solid performers.
quirkier, smaller films, Over Your Dead Body. I don't think Samar Weaving is gonna make it as an actress. She just she just can't get it. She just can't get it to work. And uh Mother Mary also can't get any traction. Can Anne Hathaway truly stage a comeback? We'll find out this coming weekend as The Devil Wears Prada 2 kicks officially the summer movie season. The review embargo, interestingly, lifts on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. But no matter what happens, I think the movie is extraordinarily well positioned, not just for kicking off the summer movie season, but the weekend after his Mother's Day, and I think it's going to be a choice for a lot of people for that weekend as well.
Moving over to streaming, starting with Neielson as usual, this time for the end of March. Gosh darn it, Daredevil, even with one season under its belt, you know, Disney was like, "We should do multiple seasons. We're getting killed in the Neielson because we keep starting from scratch. Well, still Daredevil Born Again couldn't chart with the beginning of season two. Remember, the first season infamously never charted. And yet, here's Marvel filming season 3 wide out in the open, ruining all the surprises of this season yet to come in the next week or so. Like, for what?
Like, even on Disney Plus, Darth Maul is beating out Daredevil and it has shorter episodes and no first season. What? I know a Daredevil was really big back in the day and no one could take that away from it. And it does trend when it airs, but man, I don't think it's ever going to be the sensation it once was, particularly because Daredevil, there's not a lot of variety to his stories, you know. Um, I enjoy Kingpin, but I agree.
There's been a lot of Daredevil versus Kingpin at this point. And he spotted on the set of season 3.
Now, it might also be attributable to the total traffic jam we're having right now when it comes to genre shows. And Daredevil, because that drops Tuesday nights, that's forced The Boys to drop at 3:00 a.m. on Wednesdays. Even though in the past, Prime Video has debuted shows like the night before. Uh, and that way people have all day for to have the episode of The Boys Ruined by spoilers, you know, before they get home from work or school to watch. I think the boys should have just gone head-to-head with Daredevil. I wouldn't have let them push me out of Tuesday nights. Although, this is a weaker final season for the boys, unfortunately.
Although, this week's episode is very good, and I'm going to go back to breaking down the episodes. I missed last week, but it was a real filler episode.
Even Invincible season 4 slipped a bit in its second week on Neielson's charts, but at least it's still able to chart, right? And we'll see how Darth Maul does when Neielson catches up to it. It didn't debut the week after this. It'll debut on the chart after that.
Our usual top shows are still all doing very well, but something very bad is going to happen despite its Stranger Things and baby reindeer pedigree just couldn't hit. Then with movies, you can see that Anaconda really found its audience on Netflix, right? Uh leading the movie chart and even breaking into the overall chart, right? Not bad for a movie that totally bombed in theaters, but the audiences have decided, remember, it did very well on digital as well. It's a streaming movie.
Now, over on Netflix for just last week, the big story here is that Beef season 2 was DOA, debuting at the bottom. That's incredible for something that was such a not only a fan favorite show, but won so many awards. The audience score is not great with a lot of viewers asking where's the beef as in there's no real conflict like there was in the first season. Is the cast perhaps also an issue? Is Oscar Isaac no longer a draw?
He never was a huge draw, but he should usually do numbers better than this.
Plus, it was a very risky move to make this an anthology series rather than, you know, continuing the story and having a whole so having a whole new cast. The gamble did not pay off and Mr. and Mrs. Smith which also is going to be an anthology show with a whole new cast and storyline should be worried. Too bad I think they already filmed it.
Meanwhile, Dan Levy's big mistakes mistakes continues to be kind of A BIG MISTAKE ITSELF only rallying a bit in its second week with movies. Incredibly thrash is still going very strong.
People love sharks and apparently also Nepo babies as much as they like to complain about them because Adam Sandler's Daughter got her very own movie and it did pretty good. South Africa's action movie on uh 180 took second place as Netflix continues to work the hardest in Hollywood to promote global talent and gets a lot out of it.
They ain't doing it to make the world a better place, but that is a nice side effect. Uh how much non-Hollywood content do you find yourself watching on Netflix?
But aside from Thrash, this chart is pretty weak overall. So much so that K-pop Demon Hunters in its 44th week, remember how it had fallen out of the top 10, I mean out of the top five, and we were like, "Okay, this is its new home." It's back in the top five. That's incredible.
As for the digital chart, uh, over on Apple, Avatar still number one, and The Housemaid just keeps going. It's one very sexy Energizer Bunny. Goat and Send Help are also holding strong. And again, while we wait to see how Michael plays out in theaters, it's encouraging that it's already number 16 in digital pre-orders.
As for this coming weekend, here we go.
Summer movie season has arrived. The Devil Wears Prada 2 will kick things off with a bang, and it is booked in like almost every single movie theater. The Met Gala also will be on the Monday after and as I said it will then go into Mother's Day weekend. So again, Disney very nicely positioned for this film.
Angel Studios will counterprogram with animated movie Animal Farm from Andy Circus. Although every single movie he directs, even though some of them are good, they just don't do well. Plus, Neon's Hokum with Adam Scott and another anime movie out of Japan. On digital on Tuesday, Here Comes Hoppers after a very long run in theaters. Right. And then also They Will Kill You, which is taking advantage of how long Disney keeps a movie in theaters because as you might recall, They Will Kill You and Ready or Not 2 came out around the same time. In fact, Ready or Not 2 came out the weekend earlier and they kind of cannibalized each other at the box office. Yep. They Will Kill You is hitting digital first. Uh, as for streaming movies on Friday, Michael B.
Jordan gets animated for Netflix was swapped along with Juno Temple. And you know, John Lacader is still, you know, David Ellison said he loves to hire can hire canceled people and John Lacader still heads up his animation uh studio, Sky Dance Animation. Director Nathan Go also is a hire or you know, you know, you know, boop, you know, take yoink yoink. That's the right sound effect taken from Disney. THIS SOUNDS A BIT LIKE HOPPERS, but you know, we'll see how it does. That is a strong voice cast. Uh although Skydance Animation has yet to produce a single hit. All right, as for shows, yes, there are still more coming even though we already have too many. Widow's Bay starts on Wednesday on Apple TV. My review for that will go up before the debut. I tweeted about it.
It's incredible. Make sure you tune in to that. Uh as does Spanish language The House of the Spirits uh on Prime Video.
And then Yaya Abdul Matim II has another show, this time Man on Fire for Netflix, dropping Thursday. And yes, it is based on the novel that was made into the Denzel Washington movie back in 2004.
And that's this week's movie math. What have you been watching? What do you plan to watch? And what do you think the future holds for Michael in terms of box office, Oscars, and more? Share your thoughts down below. Subscribe today.
And of course, as always, you can check out some more videos right now.
