A Bird BURIED ACORNS In An ABANDONED Field — WHAT It BUILT Over 60 YEARS Stunned Ecologists!
Added:There is a piece of paper in an English archive that changed how I think about forests.
It is not a map or a grant application or a scientific paper. It is a short typed note written in the early 1960s by a man named Kenneth Melenby who ran a small research station in the flat farmland of Cambridge in the east of England.
The note concerns a single field, four hectares of ordinary arable ground that had just given up its final crop of barley.
The plow had gone over it one last time, turning the stubble into bare brown earth, and then for reasons that had nothing to do with farming, Melby decided to leave it alone.
He wrote down why.
And the sentence he chose is the reason I am telling you this story at all.
It might be interesting, he wrote, to watch what happens to this area if man does not interfere.
Will it become a wood again? How long will it take? Which species will be in it?
That is the whole idea.
No planting scheme, no budget, no plan beyond patience.
A director of a research station looked at a plowed field, asked three plain questions, and then did the one thing that almost never happens with land in a crowded country like England. He stepped back and let it be.
My name is Edmund Hail. I'm an ecologist and a conservation biologist and I have spent most of my working life on the question of what land does when we finally stop managing every inch of it.
I have walked ground that we've planted and fenced and fussed over for decades.
And I have walked ground that we abandoned and forgot.
And I will tell you now before we go any further that the forgotten ground has taught me more than the tended ground ever did.
This story is the clearest example I know.
60 years after Melby fed that piece of paper into his typewriter, we have the answers to all three of his questions, and they are stranger and more beautiful than he could have known.
The field is called the wilderness now.
It earned the name almost as a joke because of what came first.
And to understand why what grew there matters, you have to understand what England is underneath the hedge and the postcard villages.
This is one of the least wooded countries in Europe.
Around 13% of the land carries trees against a European average closer to 38 and only half of even that thin covering is native woodland.
The rest is largely rows of imported conifers grown like a crop for timber.
So when a raw arable field in the middle of English farmland is simply abandoned, the honest expectation is not a forest.
The honest expectation is a mess.
Weeds, thistles, a tangle of coarse grass, and then decades of very little.
That is not what happened in the first years. Yes, the field did what a bare field does. Grasses moved in, then taller herbs, the fast opportunists that colonize any disturbed ground.
If you had walked the edge of it in 1965, you would have seen nothing to suggest a wood was coming. You would have seen a scruffy meadow going its own way.
But something was already at work that the eye could not catch, and it was arriving on wings.
Right beside this field stood an old wood.
Monk's wood is genuinely ancient. Its presence on the land documented back to the year 1279.
And a wood that old is not just a stand of trees.
It is a machine for making more forest.
It holds a deep reserve of seed and it holds the animals that move that seed around.
Thrushes and other berry eating birds sat in the old canopy fed on its fruit and dropped what they carried out across the open ground next door. And what they carried above all was thorn.
This is the part I want you to hold on to because it overturns the instinct most of us have about how a forest begins.
We picture the oak first, the noble tree, the slow giant rising alone from the grass.
But that is not the order of things. In this field and in a great many places like it, the first woody plants to take the ground were not the great trees at all. They were bramble and hawthorne, the thicket makers, the thorns.
Within the first 10 to 15 years, a shrubland of thorn thickets had spread across the wilderness, dense, snagging, impenetrable in places, dominated by bramble and by hawthorne, heavy with white blossom in the spring.
If you were a farmer, this is exactly the vegetation you would curse. It is what land looks like when nobody is keeping it in order. It is the reason the place got its half joking name, an impenetrable wilderness right on the doorstep of a tidy research station.
But that thicket was not chaos. It was doing a job that no human hand could have done as well because the ground around this field was full of hungry mouths.
Rabbits, brown hairs, mutjack deer, and road deer. In most attempts to grow a wood, these animals are the enemy of every young tree. A tender seedling of oak or ash is exactly the kind of thing a deer will crop to the ground and again the next year and the next until the tree simply gives up.
Across Britain, the standard answer to this problem is the fence and the plastic tube. You wrap every planted sapling in protection and you ring the whole planting in wire at enormous cost because otherwise the herbivores win.
In the wilderness nobody built a fence, nobody needed to. The thorns did it.
Inside that sn of bramble and hawthornne the browsing animals could not reach.
And in the shelter of the thicket, protected from teeth by nothing more than spines, the real trees began to appear.
Windb blown seed of common ash drifted in and took root among the thorns. Field maple came the same way, and most tellingly of all came the oak, whose acorns do not blow on the wind and do not pass through a thrush.
Acorns are heavy. Something had to carry them one by one and bury them. That something was a bird called the J.
I want to spend a moment on this bird because it is the quiet hero of the entire story, and it is a bird most people have been taught to dislike.
A J is a member of the crow family, dressed in soft pinkish brown with a single flash of electric blue on the wing. In autumn, it does something extraordinary.
It gathers acorns from the oaks, thousands of them across a season, and it flies them out and buries them one by one, hiding them as a winter lauder against the hungry months.
A single J can cache several thousand acorns in a single autumn.
[clears throat] And here is the thing that makes it matter to a forest.
It is a hoarder with an imperfect memory.
Many of those buried acorns are never dug up again.
Every forgotten cache is in effect a tree deliberately planted in the soil at the right depth by a bird that meant only to feed itself.
We can read the jay's work in the finished wood because the numbers give them away. Of all the trees that now grow in the monks wood wilderness, 52% are oaks. More than half.
In a wood that no human ever planted, the single communist tree is the one whose seed is too heavy to arrive by any means except an animal choosing to carry it. That is the signature of the J written across 60 years and four hectares.
The old wood next door supplied the acorns. The jay's were the hands.
And yet across much of the British countryside, jays are shot as pests, persecuted because they will take the eggs and chicks of other birds.
The scientist who studied this wood most closely has made the point plainly.
Whatever a jay takes in the spring, the good it does by carrying acorns and building whole new woodlands for every other creature to live in far outweighs it.
We have been killing one of the most effective foresters in the landscape because we never understood the work it was doing.
So picture what this field became layer upon layer over the decades.
First the grasses, then the thorns rising over the grass, then sheltered inside the thorns and safe from the deer, the seedlings of ash and maple and oak.
And then the slow reversal as those young trees pushed up through the thicket that had raised them, spread their crowns, and closed a canopy overhead.
The thorns that had been the whole world of the young wood were now cast into shade beneath it. They did not vanish.
They became the understory, the lower story of a proper woodland, exactly where thick it belongs once the giants are established.
There is an old country saying in England that I did not fully believe until I read the science behind this place. The thorn is the mother of the oak.
It sounds like folklore, and it is, but it turns out to be precisely mechanically true.
Without the thorn, the deer eat the oak.
With the thorn, the oak survives to become the wood. The bramble that the farmer curses is the reason the forest exists at all. And once the canopy closed, the wood began filling with the kind of life that only comes to real woodland.
As the trees aged, branches died and fell, and deadwood began to accumulate on the floor because nobody was tidying it away.
Dead wood is not waste in a forest. It is habitat.
Fungi move into the rotting logs and invertebrates after them, and a whole quiet economy of decay gets underway that a young planted plantation simply does not have.
Above it, the layered structure of the wood, ground plants and shrub understory and high canopy offered nesting room for birds at every level, song thrushes and garden warblers low down, nuthatches up in the trees.
And then came the arrivals that told the ecologists something important.
Species began appearing that do not settle for scrubland or hedro.
The marsh tit, a small woodland bird that needs mature structured forest.
The purple hair streak, a butterfly whose whole life is bound to the oak canopy.
These are woodland specialists. They are the creatures that show up only when a habitat has genuinely become a wood, not merely a field full of trees. Their presence was the field's way of saying that it had crossed over, that it now resembled the ancient wood beside it closely enough that the ancient woods most demanding residents were willing to move in.
The measurements confirm what the wildlife announced. After roughly 15 years, the bare field had become wildlife rich shrub land. Within 40 to 50 years, it had become closed canopy woodland of oak, ash, and field maple, carrying up to 390 trees for every hectare.
Not a scrub, not a thicket. A young forest converging year by year on the 13th century wood it grew up beside.
All of it self assembled. Not one tree planted, not one seed sewn by human hands, not one meter of protective fencing.
The seed came from the old wood. The planting was done by jays and thrushes and the wind. The protection was done by thorns.
The people did nothing at all and the nothing they did was the entire point.
This was reing decades before anyone used the word and it was watched the whole way through.
From the 1990s onward, the fields were surveyed again and again, trees counted on foot, canopy heights mapped, first by laser scanners flown over an aircraft, and later by drones.
A second field, a patch of grassland abandoned in 1996 and named the new wilderness, was added so the early years could be studied aresh alongside the older one.
That long patient record is what makes this place matter to science rather than merely to sentiment.
The work was carried out not by one lone observer but by a team drawn from across Britain and beyond from Cambridge and Bournemouth to research institutes in Poland and Finland. and it was led by an ecologist named Richard Broton who has spent years reading the wood that Melanbbe's note set in motion. It stands as one of the most thoroughly documented cases in Britain of a field becoming a forest entirely on its own. And it was published for anyone to examine.
But I want to be as honest with you as this story deserves because the honesty is where the real lesson lives. This is not a promise that you can walk away from any patch of ground and return to a forest. The wilderness worked because of conditions that were not accidents.
There was ancient woodland right beside it, a rich and close supply of seed.
There were the animals to move that seed, the jays and thrushes and squirrels still present in the landscape. And critically, the browsing pressure, though real, was survivable.
because the thorns got there first, and the deer were not so overwhelming that they could break through.
Take those conditions away, and the outcome changes completely.
Abandon a field far from any wood, with no seed source, and no jays to carry acorns, and you may wait a very long time for anything but grass. Abandon it where deer are super abundant and there is no thicket to hold them off and they will eat the future as fast as it sprouts.
Natural regeneration is not magic. It is a set of conditions and where the conditions are absent planting may be the only road.
That matters right now more than it did in Melanbbe's day because his country and much of the world is under pressure to grow woodland fast for the carbon it locks away and the wildlife it shelters.
The usual answer is to plant to raise saplings in nurseries, truck them out, push them into the ground and wrap each one in a plastic tube. It works but it is expensive.
National planting targets in Britain run to tens of thousands of hectares a year at a very high cost to the public purse.
And every planted tree carries a risk of importing disease on nursery stock and leaves a litter of degrading plastic in the soil.
What the wilderness offers is a different option to hold alongside the spade.
Where there is an old wood nearby and the animals to work with it, you can sometimes let the land plant itself at no cost with trees already suited to that exact patch of ground, growing in the natural order the thorns and the jays have always used.
This is no longer only theory. The evidence from these fields helped shape a real change in policy. A national scheme that for the first time offers landowners support not to plant trees, but to let them arrive on their own.
Not everywhere, but in the right place beside the right wood, a fence and a nursery and a lorry full of tubes may be less use than simply deciding, as one man once did, to watch and to wait.
There is one more quality of this self-made wood worth naming, and it may turn out to be the most valuable of all.
Because these trees grew from local seed in local soil under local conditions with no coddling and no irrigation, they are tough. [snorts] When drought struck in the dry summers, the young woodland held. It had never been dependent on us, so it had nothing to lose when we were not there to help.
In a warming world, where the summers ahead will test every forest we try to grow, a wood that raised itself hard and unassisted, may stand when a pampered plantation fails.
The land, it turns out, may know how to prepare for a future we are only beginning to fear.
Which brings me back to that piece of paper. Kenneth Meenby asked three questions in a note he probably expected no one to read. Will it become a wood again? How long will it take? Which species will be in it. He did not live to see the closed canopy. But the field answered him anyway, in full, and the answers are on the record now for anyone who cares to look.
Yes, it became a wood. It took roughly 40 to 50 years to close its canopy. And the commonest tree in it, more than half of everything that grew, is the oak that a small blue-winged bird carried in acorn by acorn and buried in the shelter of the thorns.
There is a particular kind of humility in that. We tend to believe that a forest is something we make. That without our planting and our tending and our fences, the trees would never come.
And here is four hectares of England quietly proving otherwise.
The wood knew how to build itself. It knew the order of things. The thorn before the oak, the shelter before the giant. It had known that order for far longer than we had been writing notes about it. What it needed from us was not our labor and not our expertise.
What it needed was for one person to be curious enough to leave it alone and patient enough to watch what a field will do when for once no one interferes.
