[00:00:00]Neutron stars are one of the most extreme and violent things in the universe.

[00:00:07]Giant atomic nuclei only a few kilometers in diameter, but as massive as stars.

[00:00:13]And they owe their existence to the death of something majestic.

[00:00:29]Stars exist because of a fragile balance.

[00:00:32]The mass of millions of billions of [music] trillions of tons of hot plasma are being pulled inwards by gravity >> [music] >> and squeeze material together with so much force that nuclei fuse.

[00:00:44]Hydrogen fuses into helium. This releases [music] energy, which pushes against gravity and tries to escape. As long as this [music] balance exists, stars are pretty stable.

[00:00:57]Eventually, the hydrogen will be exhausted. [music] Medium stars like our sun go through a giant phase where they burn [music] helium into carbon and oxygen before they eventually turn into white dwarfs.

[00:01:09]But in stars many times the mass [music] of our sun, things get interesting when the helium is exhausted. For a moment, >> [music] >> the balance of pressure and radiation tips and gravity wins, squeezing the star tighter than before. The core burns hotter and faster, while the outer layers of the star [music] swell by hundreds of times, fusing heavier and heavier elements.

[00:01:31]Carbon burns to neon in centuries, neon to oxygen in a year, oxygen to silicon in months, and silicon to iron in [music] a day.

[00:01:40]And then, death.

[00:01:43]Iron is nuclear ash.

[00:01:45]>> [music] >> It has no energy to give and cannot be fused.

[00:01:49]The fusion suddenly stops and the balance ends.

[00:01:52]Without the outward pressure from fusion, the core is crushed by the enormous weight of the star above it.

[00:01:58]What happens now is awesome and scary.

[00:02:02]Particles like electrons and protons really don't want to be near each other, but the pressure of the collapsing star is so great [music] that electrons and protons fuse into neutrons, which then get squeezed together as tightly as in atomic nuclei.

[00:02:17]An iron ball the size of the Earth is squeezed into a ball of pure nuclear matter the size of a city.

[00:02:23]But not just the core, the whole star implodes, gravity pulling the outer layers in at 25% the speed of light.

[00:02:31]This [music] implosion bounces off the iron core, producing a shock wave that explodes outwards and catapults the rest of the star into space.

[00:02:40]This is what [music] we call a supernova explosion and it will outshine entire galaxies.

[00:02:47]What remains of the star is now a neutron [music] star. Its mass is around a million times the mass of the Earth, but compressed to an object about 25 km wide.

[00:02:58]It's so dense that the mass of all living humans would fit into 1 cubic centimeter of neutron star matter.

[00:03:04]That's roughly a billion tons [music] in a space the size of a sugar cube.

[00:03:09]Put another way, that's Mount Everest in a cup of coffee.

[00:03:14]From the outside, [music] a neutron star is unbelievably extreme. Its gravity is the strongest outside black holes and if it were any denser, it would become one.

[00:03:25]Light is bent around [music] it, meaning you can see the front and parts of the back.

[00:03:30]Their surfaces reach a [music] million degrees Celsius compared to a measly 6,000 degrees for our sun.

[00:03:36]Okay, let's look inside a neutron star.

[00:03:40]Although these giant atomic nuclei are stars, in many ways they're also like planets with solid crusts over a liquid core.

[00:03:48]The crust is extremely hard.

[00:03:51]The outermost layers are made of iron leftover from the supernova squeezed together [music] in a crystal lattice with a sea of electrons flowing through them.

[00:03:59]Going deeper, gravity squeezes nuclei closer together.

[00:04:03]We find fewer and fewer protons as most merge to neutrons [music] until we reach the base of the crust.

[00:04:10]Here, nuclei are squeezed together so hard that they start to touch.

[00:04:14]>> [music] >> Protons and neutrons rearrange making long cylinders or sheets enormous nuclei with millions of protons and neutrons shaped like spaghetti and lasagna which physicists [music] call nuclear pasta.

[00:04:27]Nuclear pasta is so dense that it may be the strongest material in the universe, basically unbreakable.

[00:04:34]Lumps of pasta inside a neutron star can even make mountains at most a few centimeters high, but many times as massive as the Himalayas.

[00:04:44]Eventually, beneath the pasta, [music] we reach the core.

[00:04:47]We're not really sure what the properties of matter are when they're squeezed this hard. Protons and neutrons might dissolve into an ocean of quarks, a so-called quark-gluon [music] plasma.

[00:04:57]Some of those quarks might turn into strange quarks making a sort of strange matter with properties so extreme that we made a whole video about it.

[00:05:06]Or maybe they just stay protons and neutrons.

[00:05:09]No one knows for sure, and that's why we do science.

[00:05:13]That's all [music] pretty heavy stuff, literally, so let's go back out into space.

[00:05:18]When neutron stars first collapse, they begin to spin very, very fast like a ballerina pulling her arms in.

[00:05:26]Neutron stars are celestial ballerinas spinning many times [music] per second.

[00:05:31]This creates pulses because their magnetic field creates a beam of radio waves [music] which passes every time they spin.

[00:05:38]These radio pulsars are the best known type of neutron star. About 2,000 are known of in the Milky Way.

[00:05:46]These magnetic fields are the strongest [music] in the universe, a quadrillion times stronger than Earth's after they're born.

[00:05:53]They're called magnetars until [music] they calm down a little.

[00:05:57]But, the absolute best kind of neutron stars are friends with other neutron stars.

[00:06:01]By radiating away [music] energy as gravitational waves, ripples in space-time, their orbits can decay, and they can crash into and kill each other in a kilonova explosion [music] that spews out a lot of their guts.

[00:06:14]When they do, the conditions become so extreme that for a moment heavy [music] nuclei are made again.

[00:06:20]It's not fusion putting nuclei together this time, but heavy neutron-rich [music] matter falling apart and reassembling.

[00:06:28]Only very recently we've learned that this [music] is probably the origin of most of the heavy elements in the universe, like gold, uranium, and platinum, and dozens more.

[00:06:38]So, then our two neutron stars collapse [music] and become a black hole, dying yet again.

[00:06:45]Not only do stars have to die to create elements, they have to die twice.

[00:06:50]Over millions of years, these atoms will [music] mix back into the galaxy, but some of them end up in a cloud which gravity pulls together to form stars [music] and planets, repeating the cycle.

[00:07:01]Our solar system is one example, [music] and the remains of those neutron stars that came before us are all around us.

[00:07:09]Our entire [music] technological modern world was built out of the elements neutron stars made in eons past, sending these [music] atoms on a 13-billion-year journey to come together and make us and our world.
