Wednesday 7/22 Weather Update - Severe Storms Expected

[00:00:00]Hello everybody and good morning. I got to tell you what on the waters where you want to be as you go through the next few days because we will be a warming right back up as we head into your weekend and you can stay up to date with the very latest with my brand spanking new weather app. Search Hutch's Weather in your app store today. We're going to talk about your hour-by-hour forecast, talk about where some thunder showers may be roaming and we'll get started right now. But first, I'm meteorologist Hutch Johnson and for the past 30 years I've been a chief meteorologist on broadcast television, but now I'm streaming for you. Now, scattered showers and rumbles of thunder through South Dakota as we begin our morning hours. A few clouds in Southwest North Dakota with spotty sprinkles there.

[00:00:37]Elsewhere, this is high pressure starting to push in behind it. That's that cool burp of air we had making its way down into Iowa right now. But here's the building heat starting back in with those south winds across South Dakota.

[00:00:49]Zooming into the Northern Plains, here's what you can plan on for your day.

[00:00:52]Number one, scattered showers and thunderstorms across South Dakota from Pierre down towards Sioux Falls. Very quiet conditions across Minnesota, high pressure here. Light and variable winds and a south wind out to the west. Now, as we go into the late afternoon hours as you're getting ready to get off of work, it does look like we'll see a passing cloud or two. These could yield isolated showers or thunder showers as we go through your Wednesday afternoon.

[00:01:17]So, keep that in mind later for today.

[00:01:19]Then as we go through, it does look like that south wind and southwest wind starts taking hold as a high pressure system skedaddles down to the south. In portions of Wisconsin, scattered showers and thunderstorms, but much quieter than the weather that we had on Tuesday, which did become severe. Now, as we head into the period of the day tomorrow, scattered showers once again taking place across South Dakota. But look at this, a chance for some more wet across areas where the fire has really scarred the region and we'll take it. Hopefully not too much in the way of lightning out there. Here's what you need to know out the door. Light and variable winds, temperatures in those low to mid 50s for many here in North Dakota and Minnesota as that high pressure system will continue to scoop down throughout the day. That'll keep our skies clear, and it will keep us with a cool start in the morning. South winds out to the west in Montana, Wyoming, and western South Dakota, and maybe the sliver of southwestern most North Dakota seeing temperatures a little milder near 70°.

[00:02:14]Now, the heat is on. Those south winds continue to warm it up. We'll just start to see our winds become southerly in the latter part of the day. I think it will be the peak day of the week on Wednesday with comfortable and seasonable temperatures. Cooler north 70s there.

[00:02:29]We'll have 83 in Fargo, a little warmer down in places like Lisbon and Gwinner, as well as you folks in Oakes. Now, as we look down here, we'll see some temperatures in the 60s on the north shores at North flow that will be off the waters. I think we'll see some cool temperatures as well for the south shore and Apostle Islands. 79 in the areas of the Twin Cities. We're talking mid-70s in Lakes Country to near 80 then as we go into a western Otter Tail County for Fergus Falls, same thing for western Becker County kissing that 80° mark for our afternoon. Now, as we take a look at that extended forecast, I can tell you this. We have some things to worry about with regards to that heat. And let me show you what I mean. We're going to take a look at the European model here, and that will show us uh the extent of the heat as we go into uh your weekend ahead. Now, number one, as we take a look at the national picture, let me go ahead and turn this over to temperatures, and I will also point out that our dew points will be on the high side as well. Uh let me get to our region here. This will be a little bit closer view. Now, you'll see the heat start building in uh from the west and south as we go into the late week.

[00:03:37]So, Thursday and Friday, things really start heating up out west. Some 90s and even some triple digits will be possible in parts of Montana. And then heading into your Saturday here uh this is Friday in the afternoon. Heat starts building back up towards 90°, and then shazam, look at all of the heat here as we go into Saturday. So, Saturday could be heat peak heat for many areas in the central Dakotas and this dome of heat will continue to spread off to the east as we go through our weekend. So, Sunday we're back in it. In fact, maybe even hotter for the FM area then as we go into our Monday, the heat dome will continue to slide slowly off to the east. Now, there will be a chance for an isolated shower or thunder shower in the extended forecast as well. And a couple of things to keep in mind with regards to that is the simple fact that in the heat like this, most likely they're going to be isolated in nature. So, here is a look at that forecast for the future radar as we go through. Right now, we're very quiet high pressure over us. We can't rule out a spotty shower or rumble of thunder up in the north. Now, as we continue through though, heading into the weekend, we'll see scattered showers mainly up north on Friday night, Thursday night, a couple showers and storms. So, again, north where things are a little cooler in the upper atmosphere giving storms a chance to develop there, but no real bull's-eyes, just hit and miss storms as we go through your weekend ahead and that is about it.
