Almost counts sometimes," Cole said. She stood. She looked at him the way she had looked at him that first morning in his kitchen, like she was rereading something. "You did not do what most men would have done, she said, when you found me. Most men are wrong a lot, he said. She almost smiled again. This time it made it a little further. My people are two days east, she said. I will bring the papers to them and they can begin the legal process from there.
That's a long ride alone, Cole said. I have ridden longer alone, she said. I know you have, he said. I mean, I could ride with you to the edge of my range.
Another few hours east before you're out of Pryor's reach. Louisa looked at the creek.
And after that, she said. And after that, you're clear, he said. She was quiet for a moment. Cole Harden, she said. He looked at her. You made a serious enemy today, she said. I had enemies before today, he said. Not like Pryor. Probably not, he said. But I had that fence post on my property line either way. Couldn't leave it the way it was.
Louisa picked up the roan's reins. She mounted. She looked down at him from the saddle. When Pryor comes for your land hand, she said, send word to the people two days east. We have men who know how to answer that kind of conversation.
Cole put his hat back on. I'll keep that in mind, he said.
They rode east together for two more hours. The sun went low and the shadows of the horses stretched long across the pale ground ahead of them. They didn't talk much. The kind of quiet that doesn't need filling.
At the ridge that marked the edge of Cole's range, she pulled Dutch up.
Louisa stopped the roan beside him. East the land opened wide and flat. A place she knew how to move through. A place she had been moving through her whole life.
From here, he said. She looked east then back at him. From here, she said. She reached into her coat and pulled out the rolled documents. She held them for a moment then put them back.
My grandfather drew 40 years ahead of himself, she said. He understood something most men don't. That what you do today reaches forward, it touches things you'll never see.
Cole looked at her. "He drew that map for this day," he said. "Yes," she said, "and perhaps for more days to come." She turned the roan east. She rode. She did not look back, which was not cold. It was just the way she moved forward, the way people move when they know exactly where they are going.
Cole sat on Dutch at the ridge and watched her go. The roan carried her fast and easy across the flat ground, smaller and smaller against the wide pale sky. Dutch shifted under him. Cole turned back west. He had fence posts to check, livestock to account for, a padlock to throw in the creek, a long evening of ordinary things. Behind him, east, Louisa rode with her grandfather's work against her chest, and 40 years of full finally folded into something that could not be taken back. The land held both of them for a moment longer, the way land does, indifferent to names and without memory.
Then it just held the light, and the light was enough.
