A near-death experience can fundamentally transform one's perspective on life, teaching that we should live each day with gratitude and purpose rather than waiting for mortality to motivate us; this Stoic principle, illustrated by Dostoevsky's fake execution in 1849, demonstrates that confronting mortality can lead to profound personal growth and a renewed appreciation for life.

A Fake Execution Changed Dostoevsky Forever (And It'll Change You Too)
Added:Did you know a fake execution completely rewired one of history's greatest minds?
December 1849, Fyodor Dostoevsky stood in a snow-covered square in St. Petersburg, blindfolded, hands tied behind his back. A firing squad aimed at his chest. He had, as far as he knew, about 10 minutes left to live. He later wrote that those 10 minutes felt like an entire lifetime. Every sound became sharp. Every breath felt like a gift. He made a silent promise to himself. If somehow he survived, he would never waste a single moment again. Then a messenger arrived. The execution was fake. Tsar Nicholas I had ordered the whole thing as a psychological punishment, delivering the pardon at the very last second. Dostoevsky walked away a different person entirely. The Stoics had been teaching this for centuries.
Seneca wrote that we should live each day as if it could be our last, not out of fear, but out of gratitude. Most of us are waiting to almost die before we start actually living. You don't have to wait.
