Exploring the "Sold To One Direction" Fanfic TropeAdded:
Stop me if you've heard this line in a fanfiction before. I woke up, threw my long brown hair in a messy bun, and blinked my big blue orbs. When I went downstairs, my mom was sitting with five strange boys. "Why in?" my mom said.
"Pack your things. I'm selling you so I can buy more drugs." "Hello, love." The blonde one said, reaching out his hand.
"Let me take you back to the 2010s." One Direction Mania was in full swing. Their fans numbered in the millions. And like me, many of those fans were awkward kids who spent all of their time on sites like WPAD, AO3, and Quotive. The result was a metric ton of One Direction fanfiction, a surprising amount of which centered on the various boys of 1D buying teenage girls at auctions or kidnapping them. Today, I want to examine the sold to One Direction fanfiction trope to find out where exactly it came from and why exactly it was so popular. Though One Direction was formed on the X Factor in 2010, it wasn't until 2011 that they really hit it big with What Makes You Beautiful. Within months of their first single, they had become household names, and the release of their debut album, Up All Night, skyrocketed them into global stardom.
Much like Bieber Fever, One Direction infection spread quickly among the population, infecting fans by the millions. Symptoms of the infection according to the fan wiki include know every one direction song and all of the lyrics know every fact about them sometimes feel like crying about them and does and most importantly you think about them 24/7 and fans really did think about them 24/7 as a kid I was never super into One Direction but my sibling and some of my friends were like super fans so I kind of became like a member of the fandom through osmosis you know when someone that you're close with is like super entrenched in a fandom and because you spend so much time with them that kind of becomes like your fandomin-law. That was me with One Direction and also 5 Seconds of Summer.
And being immersed in this fandom, I saw how insanely devoted many hardcore directioners were. It didn't just stop at listening to their albums on repeat and buying merchandise. Oh no, that was amateur hour. Real fans knew every detail about each member's private life, where they grew up, their parents' names, where they went to primary school. Real fans shipped the band with each other and were fiercely protective of the boys, harassing any girl that was speculated to be dating any of them lest she threatened their beloved ships. Real fans spent hours creating One Direction Imagins and posting them to Facebook fan groups with thousands of members.
Imagine management is trying to force Harry to break up with you. While on the phone, he takes one look at you and shakes his head. She's my everything, so don't you dare take her away. And he hangs up the phone. Imagine fan. Harry, you have something on your lips. Harry?
Oh. Um. Uh. That must have been Wen's lip balm. Imagine your eggs. I really need to talk to Yenne. It's important.
Nile. Do you really think I'd let you go anywhere near her after you broke her heart? You're lucky I haven't beaten the out of you. Am I tripping or did that kind of give Jon Snot? Above all, dedicated fans wrote fanfiction which often incorporated the affforementioned elements of YN imagines and shipping.
It's hard to overstate the sheer volume of fanfiction written about this band.
With over 85,000 results on AO3 and well over 250,000 results on WAD, it's safe to say that One Direction Fever had officially reached online writing communities. And in these communities, there was one specific genre that despite its bizarre premise rose to the top. The sold/kidnapped fanfiction. The concept of kidnapping as romance or the far more dubious auction romance which sees the protagonist being bought or sold is nothing new. These tropes have been around since writing was a thing basically. And today, taboo topics such as kidnapping, enslavement, non-consent, and violence are generally grouped under the dark romance umbrella.
Naturally, the genre is controversial with auction romance clear parallels to real world slavery and many dark romance stories quite literally romanticizing violent or abusive behavior. There's a lot of, let's just say, discussion that goes on around these books. Whatever your opinion may be, there's no denying that these tropes are extremely popular with romance readers and have been for a long time, long before One Direction was even a glint in Simon Cow's eyes. But once they entered the picture and fans began writing fanfiction, kidnapping and auction stories emerged as very popular genres. I remember seeing so many 1D fanfictions where the protagonist was kidnapped or bought and sold, and for some reason that became so normalized in my mind that I never had any questions about it. But now I'm an adult and I have so many questions about it. Chief among them is why was One Direction buying/kidnapping so many girls in the 2010s?
Memes about being sold to One Direction are actually incredibly common online.
From Twitter to Tumblr to Tik Tok, there are countless jokes about throwing your hair up in a messy bun and going downstairs to find out that your mom has sold you to One Direction, which of course causes your golden hazel orbs to well up with tears. These types of posts have become super prolific over on Tik Tok. Partly because like copy pasting the same joke on mass is kind of Tik Tok's thing, but also partly because these sold to One Direction fanfictions have been cemented as such like this nostalgic core memory for so many Gen Z internet users. And all of this might lead you to believe that these types of fanfictions were super common back in the day. You know, clearly there were enough of them to stick in people's minds and become a meme. But no, in my experience researching this video, actual unironic stories where girls are sold to One Direction are kind of few and far between. Most of the stories I found during my research were ironic parody fix that poke fun at the trope with intentionally bad spelling and as many cheesy fanfic cliches crammed in as possible. It's difficult to pinpoint the original fanfiction that started it all.
In response to a post asking where the sold to boyband trope originated from, Reddit user Sticky Tooth wrote, quote, "A few days ago, I was scrolling through social media, though this time it was Tik Tok, and came across the writer of the OG sold to One Direction fanfic confessing to their crime, so to speak.
The fick was called Sold and was originally posted on Quote in 2010. The writer was 13 and was bullied and doxed in response to the fic. They deleted it, but it lives on as a copy paster, and the trope became a mainstay in the fandom. The user is Fox Tomes on Tik Tok and they have a few videos on the situation if you want to check it out.
This is just one of several posts I've seen referencing this user as the author of the first sold to One Direction fic.
However, unfortunately, the links provided just lead to the Tik Tok homepage and the username Fox hasn't turned up any results. So, I have to assume that the account has been deleted with the fic having allegedly been deleted and no evidence that I can find of a copy paster of it. Um, there's just no proof definitively that sold was the first One Direction fanfiction about being sold. The earliest concrete example I could find online is called Bought by One Direction, published on Quote in late 2012. Hey, I'm Alexis Jackson. Don't call me Alexis or you will get hurt. I am the Nile Horren's best friend. Lead the freaking room to fan girl. My so-called father is making my mom put me and Tyler, my brother, and my sister up for auction. My favorite band is One Direction. I have a British accent, though I live in Toronto, Canada. I'm abused and bullied. Tragic backstories are extremely common in this genre. It's actually very rare to read a story where the protagonist isn't abused and bully. After all, if they have great friends and loving parents, it feels a lot more grim when they're sold off to a random boy band. Having a terrible home life makes the story more powerful as wish fulfillment since the protagonist is being pulled out of it and into a new life with one day. We see this bullying in the first chapter where the lunch lady accidentally spills rice on Alexis and the mean girls start taking pictures of her and calling her rice girl. This is a trope I see all the time in teen movies. Like something embarrassing will happen to the main character and then all the mean kids in school start calling her like zit girl or toilet paper girl. It's such a specific yet common trope that I've never seen happen in real life and I think that's what makes it so fascinating to me. Has this actually ever happened? Has anyone witnessed this? Unfortunately, things go from bad to worse for Rice Girl as her dad pulls her out of school early to drive her to the auction center where boys start bidding on her. I was sitting up on stage and on the stool playing Angry Birds on my iPhone when suddenly I hear soul. I look up and I see five certain boys and one certain bodyguard.
Louie, yes, he answers. Why did you guys pick me like when I was up for auction?
I ask. Listen, we picked you because we know you're nice and Nile is your best friend and well, we all think you're pretty. I swear I was an unhealthy shade of red. I'm not going to read through this whole story because spoiler alert, it's never really explained why girls are getting auctioned in this world or why One Direction was attending one of these auctions. But I do feel the need to share some tidbits from chapter 3 because I thought it was awesome. Harry takes Alexis to a party where they casually meet up with their best friends, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez.
The morning after the party, Alexis wakes up hung over and checks Twitter to find pictures of Harry cozying up with a girl called Una. I cried my eyes out.
Then Harry walked through the door.
"Have fun with Una last night?" I say, still crying. "What?" he says, running over and looking at my laptop. "I was drunk," he yells. "Harry, listen. Unaon is taking advantage of you," I say. I take my laptop and my iPhone and run to my room, crying in the pillow. Suddenly, Una appears at my door. "Who let you in here?" "I did." "Now listen. Me and Harry are in a happy relationship, and I'm telling you to back off," she says.
And with that, she walks out of the room. "I hate myself," I yell. I ran around my room with my eyes closed, and then I bumped into my wall, and I passed out. Alexis bumps into the wall so hard that she stops breathing and the One Direction boys have to call an ambulance and rush her to the hospital. This is all great stuff, but the moment I knew this fanfic was truly legendary is when I skimmed ahead to like chapter 13 and Alexis is now living in La Push and has just been turned into a werewolf by Jacob Black. I genuinely love the story so much. One of my fascinations while reading through all of these bought sold fanfics was the in-world justifications that the authors came up with to explain why the protagonist was sold and why One Direction was buying them.
Unfortunately, the inworld justification for a surprising amount of the stories that I skimmed through was that the protagonist was legitimately being sold to One Direction as a circl slave. And those stories were very unpleasant. Uh, so I'm going to skip all of those ones.
But there are so many other weird and wild reasons that the authors conjure up to explain these whole sequences of events and I want to share a couple of them with you. In sold in brackets 1D love story protagonist Kate is sold to Simon Cowl to pay off her parents' debts. Sweetie, do you know who Simon Cowl is? asked my dad. I nodded. I've heard of him before. Well, this is him, Dad said, motioning over to the man. I waved nervously. Kate, I came here today because I found your YouTube channel.
Oh, what about it? Well, sweetie, Simon helped your father and I out about two decades ago. We're still in deep debt to him, and we were thinking that since you can sing so well that we could let Simon adopt you, make you famous, and he could keep all your money until our debt is paid off," my mom said, smiling. Tears pricricked my eyes. "Guys, this is the exact same thing as selling me." "I know, honey, but this is the only way to keep our home. Do you want all of us to live out on the streets? Think of your brothers." Kate understandably refuses to talk or sing for Simon until a very special boy band shows up and gets her to open up. Sold to Vampires is set in a post-apocalyptic world following a war between zombies and vampires which wiped out most of the human race. Isabelle is put up for auction and bought by One Direction who are, you guessed it, vampires. They basically buy her to drink her blood and torture her, including a scene where they play like human football and throw her around at super speed. Eventually Zayn falls in love with her and she becomes a vampire too though. So happy ending. The plot of sold to the boy with blonde hair is that the US was bombed. So all of the remaining girls are shipped over to England to be auctioned off. The girl in the story cat is sold for a million dollars and as is becoming a theme with these fanfics eventually becomes a witch and gets supernatural powers like 10 chapters in. You got to remember that this era coincided with the popularity of shows like The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural and of course Twilight. So, a lot of stories derailed into like magical powers and mythical creatures. I say derailed like it's a bad thing, but I want to express how genuinely delighted I was every time this happened in a story I read. I think it's the best. While there's a lot of conversation and joking and gesting that goes on about sold to One Direction fanfics, I think the sheer number of One Direction kidnapping fanfics tends to get lost in the conversation, but now I'm bringing it back into the conversation. So, you're welcome.
Unlike the sold to One Direction genre, which is popular in meme culture but in practice actually pretty scarce, kidnapped by One Direction stories are surprisingly popular but very rarely talked about. I feel like the two genres are very similar. The protagonist is a victim often of abusive parents or cruel school bullies before being plucked out of their unhappy life and whisked away.
Similarly, 1D are often presented one of two ways. as malicious kidnappers who wish to use and control the protagonist for their own gain, or as saviors who pull the protag out of their unhappy life and whisk them away into a world of glitz and glam and stardom. The 2012 fanfic kidnapped by One Direction begins with our protagonist, Harmony, stumbling upon a group of men in an alleyway. When she sees one of them flash a knife, she runs over to help, only to be stabbed.
The attackers flee, leaving the remaining five boys to quickly rush her to the hospital. I wonder who these five boys could possibly be. We all stared in shock as that girl fell to the ground. I scooped her up and put her in the van. I hopped in the driver's seat and drove as fast as I could to the hospital. They put her on a stretcher and rushed her to the ICU. I had to sign some forms. We can't let her go home. She could tell someone, so I pretended to be a legal guardian. Hours later, a nurse came out.
"Uh, Mr. Taylor," she called. I stood up and walked over to her. "Follow me," she said with a wink. She looked about 30.
"Ew." This is truly how you know this was written by like a 12-year-old when 30 is so old that it elicits actual revulsion and disgust. A week later, Harmony is ready to go home and while she's knocked out with drugs and in a wheelchair, One Direction load her into their van and drive off. When she wakes up, she finds out that they've taken her all the way across the world to London and she escapes into a shop and uses their phone to leave a message for her best friend back in America. After literally chasing Harmony down until she blacks out from the pain of her injuries, One Direction take her back to the house where, since this is a fanfiction, they all begin to fall for her. Harmony wakes up one morning to find that she and Nile fell asleep in the same bed and that she might just be falling for him, too. Oh gosh, I feel bad. I'm so screwed. I was just going to make Nile fall for me so they feel comfortable with me and then when they weren't suspecting, I would get the heck out of here. But I actually like Nile and Zayn. I guess I can I don't know.
Zayn is mysterious and chill while Nile is so happy and brings a nice vibe. I need to get out of here though. It's not that I want to toy with their hearts. I just want to go home so much. To my family, to my friends, to my school, to my teams, to Derek in brackets, my crush, to my life. Suddenly, the doorbell rings. And who is it but the lady from the shop? And she got a message back from Harmony's friend.
Harmony, it's Maya. Thank goodness you're alive. I promise we will find you. If I don't hear back from you in 5 days, I'm going to assume you are dead.
And so will everyone else. Love Maya.
May we all never have a friend like Maya. One of the most popular kidnapping fics I found on WADA with almost a million reads, which is also called Kidnapped by One Direction, follows a girl called Taylor Smile who is abducted by One Direction after she's caught up with them during a stampede of fans.
Similar to the previous fic, this is sort of an accidental kidnapping story where Wendy are framed as bumbling boys who get caught up in high jinks rather than malicious kidnappers. Oh my god, I'm being kidnapped. You're not being kidnapped, Harry said while throwing me in the van. Then what do you call this?
I said while I sat up and went to open the door, but then was pulled back and trapped between two bodies. I look up to see Nile and Harry trapping me. Well, I call it epically saving a girl from getting trampled. "What do you call it, Harry?" Nile said while smiling. "Well, I call it Well, I don't really know," Harry said while thinking. We finally stopped and everyone hops out. "I'm immediately grabbed by both arms by Harry and Louis. Can't you guys just drop me off at my house?" I said while trying to get out of their grip. Sorry, we can't. You might tell someone we did this, then we won't be liked anymore.
This could cost us a whole career.
Honestly, maybe should have thought of that before this whole thing went down, but you know, what do I know? In the 2013 f, I think I've been kidnapped, One Direction shows up on my Kendrick's doorstep to ask if they can use a song that she wrote for them. Your song, Nile stated, as if it was obvious. I know, but well, I would think a lot of people would send you songs. What makes my scribble special? I question. Well, we do get songs, but yours just sort of popped, and the others are usually about how amazing we are. While they're quite funny, they don't actually speak to us like yours did. After she graciously gives them permission to use the song, the band proceeds to kidnap her while she sleeps in order to put her to work writing more songs so they can finish their album in time. This is kind of an outlier in that a lot of kidnapping fanfics try to frame the kidnapping as a big misunderstanding or kind of done out of necessity. In the first story, the protagonist saw something she wasn't meant to. In the second story, she kind of accidentally gets swept up into a kidnapping by happen stance. But in the story, the band just straight up kidnaps a teenage girl so they can hit their song quotota for an upcoming album.
"Please don't faint again." I rushed and watched as her eyes darted around to the other boys as well. She sat up slowly.
"Why am I here?" "We um kind of kidnapped you," I informed her and she gaved at me. "What?" she exclaimed.
"Now, now hear us through," Louis said, preparing to tell her the story. "We told you that we had to write four more songs for our next album, but what we didn't tell you is that we're having a little bit of a block. We needed your help to write the last four. It's revealed that they called Mai's mother in advance and she gave them permission to take her for 2 months to get the songs written. So, the story kind of borders on the sold to One Direction subgenre as well.
Despite their controversies, auction, and kidnapping romance remain extremely popular within the dark romance genre to this day, and fans of the genre enjoy it for all kinds of reasons. There are elements of control, power and balance, ownership, all things that people enjoy exploring in settings like fiction. But that's pretty obvious, right? people read things that they're into because they're into it. Very enlightening, Izzy. Thank you. I think with these One Direction fanfics, there's a little bit more going on. And I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that most of these authors were teens and tween. At the end of the day, at least from most of the stories that I read, they just feel like classic teenage escapism. The protagonists have terrible home lives, addict parents, abusive bullies. For most authors, these sad backstories are not always literal, but sometimes just symbolic of their own angsty teen struggles. Most of us as teenagers feel unhappy in some way, whether it's problems with friends and parents or insecurity about ourselves or just general angst about life and all the questions that come with growing up. But suddenly, the protagonists are pulled out of their unhappy lives and into the life of their dreams. They live in a mansion with their favorite boy band.
They have all of the riches and luxuries they could ever want. Oftent times their secret talent for singing launches their career as a famous pop star. The fact that they're sold or kidnapped actually adds to this wish fulfillment in a weird way. The protagonists of the stories never have to feel guilty for leaving their parents, their friends, and their hometown because it wasn't their choice.
They get to cut ties with their previous life and slot perfectly into their new life in London where they eat Nandos with the boys and have pajama parties every night and fall asleep in the arms of their favorite One Direction lad.
It's also a really good way for the protagonist, or rather, you know, the author, since most of these protagonists were just self-inserts, to feel wanted.
The 1D boys want her so bad that they're willing to spend a million dollars on her at an auction or risk their entire lives and careers to kidnap her. It's the kind of bizarre parasocial wish fulfillment that you can really only find in fanfiction. And there really is this intense parasocial element to a lot of these stories. Being kidnapped or like legally bought by One Direction brings the protagonist closer than ever to their idols because they literally own them. It's the same reason why adoption fanfic was also really big in the fandom because kids formed these insane parasocial relationships and wanted to be as close to the members as possible, immersed in their world and their family. They imagined these five guys to be the sweetest, most amazing, most caring guys in the whole world. So, of course, they would adopt an 18-year-old girl all together as a group for some unknown reason. One Direction had this reputation in the early fandom for being super silly, goofy guys who loved pizza and Nandos and playing pranks on each other. So, naturally, a lot of girls idolized them as their perfect dream boyfriends. Then, of course, you had the fans who liked to flip the script and imagine them as Stone Called bad boys who kidnap girls.
The band literally came out with a song called Stockholm Syndrome. And I cannot tell you how many One Direction fix about getting abducted by mafia Harry Styles or kidnapped and forced to write songs for 1D there are because of this one song title. Like they had no idea what they were unleashing upon themselves when they put this song out.
Over time, as this trope began to gain notoriety, crack fix began popping up poking fun at the absurdity of the original premises. These ironic meme joke fix became especially popular during the pandemic. You'll notice a lot of them were published around 2020, presumably because everyone was inside and bored and returned to their fanfic writing roots to pass the time. These fixs are filled with spelling errors, grammatical mistakes, nonsensical plot lines, and are usually crammed with as many exaggerated fanfic tropes as possible. A lot of the fanfics I saved to cover in this video turned out to be ironic joke fics when I looked closer at them, which is why I exclusively covered stories written in the early 2010s, as they were far more likely to be unironic. Today, this sold to One Direction trope mainly lives on in the form of hundreds of Tik Toks about Yen and her messy bun getting sold to 1D or as like ironic Twitter posts, but let us not forget the real stories behind all of the memes, the auctions and the kidnappings that built this trope. As much as we like to poke fun, because admittedly it is a very funny kind of its time fanfiction trope, a lot of these stories were just written as forms of escapism. We've all at one point or another wish to escape the mundanity of our own lives and escape into this perfect dream life. And for some very specific members of the One Direction fandom in the early 2010s, this dream life was waking up, heading downstairs to see five mysterious boys at the table, and being told your mom is selling you to One Direction. Thank you so much for watching. I really appreciate it. I hope that you guys enjoyed that video topic. These kinds of fanfictions have fascinated me for so long and I saw so many of them growing up and the other day I was just thinking about the One Direction fandom and WP pad specifically and I figured I'd make a video on it because I think it's very funny and interesting and I hope you guys can relate. Let me know if you wrote any. Let me know some crazy plot lines you've seen. You may have noticed throughout this video I kind of didn't mention really the authors specifically.
I chose to do that because these stories are all like a decade old at this point and I don't really want people to go like harass or talk to these people because this was a long time ago that they wrote these. Most likely they probably have forgotten about them entirely. So if you want, you can go find these fixs if you want to read them in full. It's not going to be that hard to find them. But just please be respectful of the authors and the fact that these are very old pieces of writing that probably don't reflect their current views. So please be aware of that. Again, thank you so much for watching. Um, the next video is going to be a little bit different. It's going to be like a short kind of update video about the channel and stuff like that.
So, keep an eye out for that. And if you have any video ideas you want me to cover in the future, let me know. And yeah, thank you so much for watching. I really appreciate it. And I really hope to see you in the next one. Bye. A huge thank you to my Garfield overlords over on Patreon.
