Ocean dead zones are areas with extremely low oxygen levels where marine life cannot survive, formed when agricultural fertilizer runoff enters oceans, causing algae blooms that die and decompose, consuming oxygen in the process; these zones can recover when fertilizer use is reduced.

What an Ocean Dead Zone Really IsAjouté :
Imagine a part of the ocean where almost nothing can survive.
Scientists call it a dead zone.
Here's how it forms.
On farms, we use a lot of fertilizer.
When it rains, that fertilizer washes into rivers and then out to sea.
There, it feeds microscopic algae and they grow incredibly fast.
But then the algae die and they sink.
As they rot, they use up the oxygen in the water.
And without oxygen, fish and sea creatures simply can't breathe.
So they flee or they die, leaving the water silent and empty.
The good news?
When we use less fertilizer, the ocean can slowly recover.
