The video masterfully explains how the "but" principle transforms horror into a sophisticated study of consequence and character. It is a sharp reminder that the best scares are rooted in narrative complexity rather than simple shocks.

Why Obsession is an Instant ClassicAdded:
Obsession is an instant classic and we're going to tell you why. The characters in Obsession are really awesome. We have Bear, Ian, Nikki, and Sarah, this dynamic friend group that enjoys like trivia night together and there's these interpersonal connections and history between all of them that are like throughout the story are kind of exasperated and kind of throw wrenches in the in the system of what's happening here.
>> Yeah, it it works out really well because you could tell they've been friends for so long. Like you can tell that this is a friendship that's carried on through high school and it's still going and you can tell the dynamics between each character because you know that Bear and Ian are best [music] friends.
And you can also kind of tell that Ian is definitely the more I don't know if you would say aggressive, but he's definitely the more like forward person in the group.
>> Yeah, and then we have our main character Bear who's instantly a chicken chicken [ __ ] but you don't know immediately what lengths it's at. So he's endearing at first, right? You're kind of rooting for him cuz he's so embarrassed.
>> Kind of. There there is a part where you're like, "Oh, come on, man."
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, come on, man. And then Ian is there to push him, as it turns out, to push him in directions that Ian wants.
Yes, 100% that's what he wants.
>> [music] >> And you get that feeling kind of by the second or third time Ian is like, "Don't tell her you like her."
It it it's this inkling of like, "I wonder if Ian likes Nikki."
>> Yeah, because they're going to this trivia night and he doesn't want to ruin trivia night.
>> [laughter] >> He makes trivia night this huge important thing.
>> what he's saying is, "Don't mess it up with Nikki." Yes.
>> Because I like Nikki. Yeah. [laughter] And then you have Sarah who's trying to get into art school which will be a plot point, but Bear tells Sarah that his cat has died by swallowing his grandma's old sleeping pills who keeps >> Which is which is sad.
>> Which is sad.
>> It's very sad.
But also clearly an omen for what's going to happen later on. Sarah gives him this real hug at the bar and it's like okay, Sarah likes him. 100% >> like Sarah loves him. And it's like she holds it longer than he thought was going to happen and it's very sweet and it's like Ah, this is going to be really really bad.
>> [laughter] >> But as things develop we learn that Sarah's trying to get into art school.
We learn that Ian and Sarah are talking about the change that happens. So we kind of get that car scene where Nikki is getting driven home by Bear. We get the dynamics pretty early on that Bear gives Nikki more chances at like deeper conversation. So it's like but it's still not confirmed as romantic. Nikki's actress does a great job of like towing that line between we have things about us that make us closer than everybody else, but at no point does she confirm some kind of romance that Bear is pining for. It's more of a you're my brother than you're a love interest.
>> Yeah.
>> [music] >> And and with the friend dynamics that's confirmed later because Ian has been talking with Sarah about how strange things get once Nikki gets put under the spell basically and Sarah These dynamics make us think like is Sarah and Ian trying to manipulate our boy to to not love Nikki or is Sarah saying these things about Nikki because she's jealous of their love and she's trying to get him to dump Nikki so Sarah can be with her. And so the the friend dynamics make it to where even though this is about a voodoo spell basically, it's like it makes you question what Sarah's intentions are early on in the film and Ian as well.
>> And I think the reason why that works is because they confine it [music] to these characters. And that's what's so good.
It's these four the whole time. So you do have other people that come in and out, [music] but there's nobody else that has as much screen time as these four do. And that's what makes this so good is you get to focus on them and you have [music] feelings towards all these characters cuz they matter. Yeah, there's just this core four and besides their boss at Guitar Center >> [laughter] >> Yeah, Andy Richter?
Uh there's it just all the screen time is devoted to the only characters that matter and it it shows a lot of restraint and like really good focus in its writing. It's good to see that in a in a horror film because you don't have many horror films nowadays to [music] where you have any feelings towards any of the characters. It's just kind of like, here they are and there they go.
Yeah, and I think you and I especially recently have been like, is there something wrong with us?
>> Yes. And I I I really feel like Obsession shows that no.
It's like the these movies are still out there even though we are in a horror renaissance. But the the the core four here and showing the dynamics, what it does is it complicates what Bear is going to have to deal with as her psychosis deepens. Um instead of him just like uh just being stuck in a house with her, he has to deal with the social aspects of like what Ian is thinking about the relationship, what Sarah is thinking about the relationship, and how to still be friends with him while not upsetting and turning Nikki into a freak [music] killer psycho. So, one of my favorite things about this film is you don't have to worry about rules in this. There's one thing that happens with this movie.
It's the One Wish Willow. That's it.
It's you get one wish when you break this stick and it comes true.
>> It's absolute. There is nothing else behind it. There is no like craziness that goes on. It's just that. You get a wish. Yeah.
>> Good luck. And I think it's like there's a there's a lore here behind the One Wish Willow.
>> There is, but you don't need it.
>> Yeah, and it doesn't >> [music] >> um you know, a lot of people on uh especially on the internet or at least like we need to know more about it. And it's like we get just enough to where it's scary, and we don't know exactly what's happening.
>> Exactly. And that helps the story because it makes it creepier not understanding why this is a thing and how a lot of people actually know about this and how the store got it. Yeah, we know.
>> it doesn't matter. We know it's old, and we know that some people don't like to open them. And we know that a lot of people have tried to return them. Yep.
>> [laughter] >> And that's it.
>> Yeah, and so like we're in the dark as much as Bear is as far as like how this is going to affect Nikki. And it just all it does is it allows your mind to go, "Oh man, this could get really, really bad." We'll see what happens.
Yeah. I think that's why I was so excited about the movie is because the premise if done right, could just get so out of control. Obviously, it does, but the story is just a through line of like this character makes a wish for somebody to be madly in love with them.
>> And he words it horribly.
>> He words it horribly, and then watch him deal with the consequences for the next hour and 45 minutes.
>> As it unfolds in the most glorious ways you'll ever see.
>> Yeah, and then and then how do those character dynamics uh uh bear the consequences of his of his single of his single mistake. Uh but this thing just goes in a a nice escalation of what ifs, right?
>> Yeah.
So, it's like um you know, it's like what if he uh it's like what are the dynamics between them sexually if somebody if somebody is obsessed with you. [music] Uh what do what does a person do all day while you're gone if they can only think about you, right?
How does that change you as you think about it as well, which is also pretty interesting >> [music] >> because in this movie you get to see how Barry reacts to the affection [music] that she gives, and I think that's something that's really cool that they go into because you can see he's kind of freaked out about it, but then there's also that part that you could tell he kind of likes it, too.
Yeah, it it's it scares him instantly, uh but as a viewer you're like, "Oh, it's scary to him because he's shy and a coward around Nikki." And then to like [music] watch the transformation go from uh kind of coward to annoyed earlier than I thought he would be. Yeah, they they kick in him being annoying the first night. Like he's actually annoyed by what's going on, but then he realizes that it's the girl he wants to be with, so he's like, "Okay, whatever."
>> He caves.
>> He does, 100%. And that's why I'm saying he kind of likes it because he lets it continue to happen.
And the really cool thing about this is is as soon as they the wish is made he breaks it. They do a really good job with Nikki and making her just as creepy as possible. Yeah.
>> Because the next thing you get after the night that they stay together, they're all in the store. So you the core four is back together in the store. So Bear goes and talks to Ian and Nikki is at the cash register and she's out of focus but you can tell where her head is and the whole conversation that Ian and Bear has, >> [music] >> she's staring right at him the whole time.
>> touch. I want to talk about the initial transformation for a second because I think from the trailer I was under the influence that the second he snapped she would just be at the car and she'd be like, I love you.
You're the best.
>> I I expected that as well which is a great job on like a jump scare because they the anticipation that you have for the movie it's awesome. Like the way that they play [music] it out.
>> She kind of glitches out outside the car and it reminds me of like the Tik Tok creepy one off videos or um and you have this soundtrack that is just this melancholic JRPG Shin Megami Nocturne and it really is I mean I I don't want to say Okay, I'll say it. It's like how the people talk in Silent Hill. She cuz she's like, I love you. Wait, what? But in a Yeah, that makes perfect sense because it's she's going through something else taking over her body.
>> Yeah, you're watching her change because the love is like the love is instantly there but it really is written in a way to where it's like the spell that he puts is pushing through her personality and it's making her malfunction.
How she talks and how she talks And you can see like as Nikki starts to dissipate over like the next like you know, the 3 minutes, she's like, "Wait, I'm acting crazy.
I'm acting crazy." And then she stops saying that she's acting crazy. And it's like, "Oh man."
>> very well done and you got to give it to the the actress. Like she just she kills the role. Uh I I noticed this earlier, but the car that he had has a dashboard with a divided passenger side just design-wise. It's like a cave on the passenger side. It dips in. And I guarantee you he found a car that had a dashboard like that so he could do a shot where she hides her face like from the side of the car to make it scarier.
>> That makes sense because they do hide her face a lot in this movie. In the shadows or standing in a corner. Yeah, so I was I was thinking from a reduction standpoint, that's really clever to just find a car that had a dashboard that she could literally put her face into a hole. And she And so she instantly starts making up lies about her dad having cancer to get uh Barrett to empathize with her. And it's interesting that instead of the love spell just being like, "I love you.
I'm dedicated to you." The love spell actually gets her to try to manipulate him. Yeah, to love her even more. Yeah, it makes you think about like what Curry Barker's like thoughts are on what love is.
>> [laughter] >> Because it's like if it isn't absolute love, that absolute love includes her trying to manipulate >> [laughter] >> manipulate him from the start. It answers all of its one ifs with with really good efficiency. It's like, "What does she do when he's gone? What does she do in a dynamic friend group? What does she do if she gets jealous? What does she do if he's gone too long? What does she do if he turns on her?
>> [music] >> And uh And it shows it all in spectacular fashion. Yeah. Is the best way to put it. I I will say after watching through the movie and coming and talking about this, it's cool to think about the Ian character once again because Ian drops [music] hints that he's knows more about Nikki just because he catches the the dad story and how fast he's able to put stuff [music] together.
Yeah. And he knows more about Nikki than Bear does.
>> Yes, he knows Bear is supposed to be your best friend. Exactly. He like Ian knows is like, "Hey, call her freaky Nikki." Yeah. Because he knows it'll drive her crazy. Right? And he knows it'll upset her. Another reason Obsession is an instant classic is that there's always a catch.
What do you mean?
I mean that anytime that you get a resolution, it comes with a consequence.
Okay. Right? So, um obviously the movie is about there being a catch.
>> It it's like I I want her to be obsessed with me.
Okay. What does that cost?
>> Yes. So, [music] overall, obviously there's a catch of it's going to destroy my entire life.
>> Mhm. There's also a catch of somewhere Nikki's actual persona is trapped somewhere. Whether it be an ethereal hell or inside the physical brain um or inside some kind of willow tree somewhere. And again, that's what we were talking about, no over-explanation.
Who knows? Who gives a [ __ ] But it makes us Yeah. think about it, right?
>> It makes it creepier.
>> Yeah. And so, every time something bad happens, she says she'll fix it, but there's a catch. And the catches are almost visual in how they work, right?
So, it's like, "Cool, you go home you go and I'll wait here for you." And then visually, and he has just said, "Hey, please God, don't do anything weird anymore. Yes.
Right? And the catch is she's duct-taped the door closed. And so it's like that's the gag. She's like, "Okay, Okay, you can leave. If you can't get out, go ahead and stay." Yeah. Okay. And then there is a friend meeting happening. And it's boys only, right? And so not only is him he's he's going to go, right? But the catch is she has a meltdown in the shower. And then she does get to go.
And they put in the catch of okay, they're going to play Jenga.
Uh maybe catch isn't the right word.
It's the butts, right? It's the butts.
And I And there's a there's a famous video of Trey Parker and Matt Stone talking about a writing class where they say if you're writing a script, >> [music] >> you don't say, "This happened and this happened and this happened."
>> say, "But."
>> Yeah, you say, "This happened, but this happened, but then this happened." And so it's like they go to the party and you don't want any social dynamics with Nikki. You want to just make sure she shuts up and doesn't say anything.
But they're playing Jenga that makes them be be interactive with each other.
>> have to talk because it's a truth or dare Jenga.
>> Yes, there's nothing you can Yeah. And it's like you don't want any You don't want Nikki to interact with Sarah at all, but you make Bear be in a situation where she's going to kiss Sarah in front of Nikki, right? And so uh it it escalates the >> [music] >> the entire film, right? And I do I love the part where Sarah and uh and Bear are in the video store together without Nikki. And we get this sandwich, [music] right? And it's like, "Oh, cool." Okay, so she she made him in a sandwich.
That's nice. It's sweet. But, there's weird photos of him in the video store with her from the security cameras.
>> Yes. So, she's been doing other stuff.
>> Yeah. And but, there's another catch of a post-it note of Nikki saying, "It's not me." Literally trying to tell Bear, "Hey, I'm in here." Mhm.
>> Right? And you don't know what it means yet.
It but, it says "Not me" on a photo of Nikki. [music] And so, again, you're constantly thinking about how the dynamics of the characters, as we explained, are in motion here. And then, there's another catch that he's actually eating the dead cat.
Those photos also tell us that she has access to the security or she looks at the security cams when he's not there.
So, whenever he puts an arm around Sarah, it's like, Cool, it's she saw that.
>> Yeah, she 100% saw that. And so, of course, um you know, we get to this awesome car scene with Sarah where where we actually kind of root for them to get together.
We kind of root for Bear to hopefully break the spell someday so he can be with Sarah. And um we kind of do an inverse catch where we know she's going to get into those last school, but she gets her brains bashed in >> Yeah. with a brick on the steering wheel.
>> what you're saying. And I [music] guess it's it's good because you do get you get what you want out of every situation, and I think that's what's awesome.
>> Yeah, and and and I think the frequency of the the butts or the catches is so high. [snorts] Every single scene has a a consequence of this very simple plot line.
>> Yeah, it does. I know I didn't even think about it that way, but it really does follow through on everything. He tells her he wants to be a a She hears that and goes, "Cool. Why don't we try something new and you critique this?"
>> Yes. His dead cat. Yes. And it's just like the question of what what if she took everything you said to the utmost admiration? It's that question, what if she took everything you did to the utmost uh you know, obsessive realizations and then blew it totally out of control at every single turn. So.
Another thing that I really love about this movie is in horror here lately, a lot of these movies rely upon loud noises. It's a Sure.
>> [music] >> that's going on and this one doesn't really do that. There There is a scene towards the end that there is kind of a loud noise, but it's because somebody's head goes through a windshield.
So, it needs a loud noise. But, this movie does a great job in using the environment very well. One of my favorite scares of the movie is one of the nights that she stays over, Bear wakes up and she's gone. So, in my head, because of the movies I've been seeing, I'm expecting her to be right behind him. Because he wakes up and he's looking towards the wall. He's not looking behind him.
>> this point, it's like if she's not behind him, she could be anywhere doing something weird.
>> Yes. So, I'm expecting behind him, on the ceiling, or he's having a nightmare.
Yeah. That's what's going through my head because of all this.
>> Exactly. And this, honestly, >> [music] >> I'm kind of excited cuz I go, "Okay, let's see what this director has." This is like the first moment of the film where you're going to be scared.
And then they >> [music] >> look right towards his wall and you see something very slightly in the corner. And then they add a little bit more light and it's her.
And as soon as you realize it's her, the hairs on my arm stood up.
>> [music] >> And I went "Yes. There we go. Somebody understands that you don't have to use crazy noises.
You can just use what's on the film and terrify people. Amy does this multiple times in the movie. Yeah. It is incredible that this this director who started on YouTube goes, "Hey, let me scare you in a way you haven't seen in a while." Yeah, and I think that the influence from J-horror is like my favorite part about this. I think during uh Ringu or uh you know, the the grudge, it's like Especially the grudge.
>> Yeah.
Uh her silhouette, you know, there there'll be shots where Nikki is draped in her own hair, uh especially after she does something violent or grotesque. And uh there is a scene where she's uh in the kitchen uh in shadow and he's in the living room.
And um where she goes backwards in reverse with her mouth getting contorted and stuff, it's straight from uh Pulse. Yeah. Uh the which I think is like one of the most terrifying things ever where that lady does the weird dance walking back.
>> Right. Uh and there's there's other shots where she like walks across the window later and she's like going like it's like this weird robot >> yeah.
>> Yeah. And then uh but that scene in particular you're talking about is is one of my favorite ones because she does also he does a really great job of blending um did she just move weird or did they edit her weird?
>> Yeah, was it was it like a fast edit or was it in reverse or how did they do that?
>> Yeah, I think when she I I feel like they filmed her walking forward and then played it backwards when she goes back into the shadows cuz she's like Yeah.
>> [laughter] >> And uh I I do think that's my favorite scene of the movie.
>> It's It's It's fantastic and there's There's multiple scenes throughout this film to where they use something similar to that that just gets under your skin >> [music] >> and it just makes me so happy to see that in horror movies now because they don't even rely upon like, "Oh man, that was gross." It's just It's just creepy and that's good. That's what we need more of. Yeah. I think there's a There's Any Any time that they hide her in shadow or she's off screen, you're just wondering It's like, "What's she doing?"
And I think that there's There's a couple of times where she'll go into another room and you'll hear a noise.
And I love the scene where she gets upset and she goes into the kitchen and he's like, "Nikki, what are you doing? What are you doing in there?" It's just like a It's like when you hear a toddler knock something over.
>> Nothing.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah. Yeah, and so anytime that she's not on screen, she could be doing anything whether it's cooking a cat or walking like a freak in the other room.
She could be stabbing herself. She could be I don't know. She could be killing Ian or have no idea.
>> Yeah, and that kind of I think that takes us right into my other real awesome reason I love this film and why I think it's a classic is that the violence matters so much because we built the character dynamics, we built these interpersonal relationships and like we said there's only real four characters in this and besides the cat dying, the only people that die are the ones that matter the most.
>> Yeah. And there are other creepy scenes with the scares like the There There is a big jump scare and all the jump scare is is real Nikki coming out for the last time.
When they're in bed together, >> Oh.
>> they're just talking and then out of nowhere Nikki goes, "What the fuck?"
Everybody in the THEATER WAS LIKE, "OH."
But it wasn't like a demon appearing on screen or something violent. It was just like just a person.
Just a person yelling. That's all it is.
>> That tells you how tense it was. And that scene where the other genuinely There's two other really creepy moments to me. It's when Nikki is screaming in pain over the phone. Oh, at one where he calls the One-Wish Willow. Yes, and you just hear Nikki screaming. Not in pain or like It I mean it not like It's terrifying. It's a terrified scream over and over and over.
>> Yeah. And then when Nikki is asleep and begs for Bear to kill her. And I think that with, you know, which we'll finish with, but Bear's transformation is like solidified right there where I'm like I hate him. Yep. Because in that moment you almost start to fear Bear more than Nikki because he's wanting this to continue. He wants to understand why she can't love him and does not care that he doomed her. Doesn't care. Why won't you love me? What?
>> [laughter] >> And then at that moment it's like oh wow, what a great line. This is a classic horror film.
Is obsession violent? It's extremely violent, but not a lot of people die, which is interesting to think about.
>> And it takes a while for it to get violent. Like you don't see you don't see a lot of violence in the movie until about maybe an hour and 10 minutes in. Yeah, maybe later than that.
Yeah, it's pretty it's pretty deep. And the violence happens There is like, you know, some self-harm stuff, which I kind of expected that to be happening. It's an abusive technique. It's like how you could I was expecting more like how could you make me do this to myself? I love you." But, yeah. I I kind of wish there was at least one more scene with Nikki like trying to fight her way out of the body. I don't. You don't think so?
>> I love that she doesn't because it shows how powerful the wish is. She can't do anything. She's stuck. I And that makes it creepier to me that she has [music] no control over it. And the only control she does have is if the entity that's in [music] her is asleep. Or does she?
>> With the character deaths, we we get them at the most emotive um gut-wrenching times. And I think that's one of the reasons it all went down so much. We we really feel like something terrible's going to happen to Sarah. I I don't think it's we feel like it. I think it's we know.
>> Yeah, we know. We know something's going >> We know without a doubt Sarah's probably dead.
>> Yeah. And the the moment comes when you don't want it to happen the most. It's [laughter] It comes on the eve of Bear and Sarah like kind of reconciling and her finally getting to find out if she's going to college or not.
>> Yeah.
>> It's her last letter. It's a big moment.
And it's like, okay, she's going to die like any second, right? [laughter] And so, I love the kill here because it's like Nikki knew that the steering wheel would not be enough to bash her head into.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah.
I did not pick up on what she did at first. It was after about the third slam of her face that I went, "Oh, no! That's a brick." Yeah, cuz we were in the theaters and Grayson like her head gets slammed like three or four times.
And then like after the fourth TIME GRAYSON GOES, "OH!"
>> [laughter] >> IT'S LIKE IT TOOK YOU SO like she headbutts through the glass and then puts a brick on the steering wheel [laughter] and uses it.
Uh but I it's it's such a fun terrible kill and the audience is JUST GOING, "AW! AW! AW!"
>> AND IT definitely lets you know that you're in you're in the finale. Once that happens, it's Yeah, you can't really go further than this. Let's [music] see what you got cooked up for the rest of this ending.
>> Yeah, and then what they do is they take the violence of Sarah's death and they they kind of revisit what was done with the cat and it's like I made a memorial of the cat. Um and we assume that we buried the cat.
No, she she kept it somewhere and then she cooked it later. And so like they get Sarah and they put her into the tuba case.
>> [laughter] >> And then it's like, "Okay, Sarah's gone." Yeah, because she tells him, "You made me do this. You need to help me get rid of THE BODY."
>> I KNOW THAT'S SO STRANGE.
>> messed up. I know. That's so crazy cuz it's like even though she's under a trance, she's still aware of like of like this is something wrong that happened and we both have to deal with the consequences.
>> made this happen, but we both have to deal with this now.
>> And he does it. He follows along with it.
>> I know. It's like you could call the police right now and just say, "Hey, my girlfriend went At the minimum cuz you're thinking like what would I do in this situation?" If I even if I made the mistake and doomed her, [music] I would just like I'd be like I'd call the police and I'd be like she just went crazy and just let her arrest herself when the cops show up cuz she's going to cry and freak out, right?
And so it's like it it it it after the scene where he dooms her, it just like double confirms again, "Okay, he's a criminal and an accomplice to murder, right?" And um you know, the the violence escalates more at the end when we find out that just like the cat she never did anything with Sarah's body.
I think she did something with it.
>> Yeah, she stripped it down naked to a jacket and put it in a chair in the guest room.
>> Yep. Just uh and then she draws on herself like Sarah to make Bear love her more.
>> She draws fake tattoos on herself.
It's It's an instant classic.
It really is and we're not even talking about the whole Ian thing, how he tries to convince him to use a wish to get rid of his wish. [laughter] Yeah, and I think that I think that there's this scene with um I think that the scene with Ian is the part where the movie almost lost me.
Really? Yeah, I think when the money started falling I I like I I almost was like, oh, I don't know if I like that part.
>> I love it because it shows how powerful the willow is.
>> Okay.
>> And it does not matter what you wish for, it can happen.
>> Okay. And I think that's why whenever it did happen and it needed to be something crazy like that for Ian to believe it cuz now he does. Sure, I do think if I guess you're right because if Ian would have wished for a billion dollars and instead it showed something more realistic like maybe he got a app notification that his bank account got a billion dollars, maybe maybe Ian would would be like, oh, it's even as ridiculous as it is, he would still chalk it up to coincidence.
>> Exactly.
>> I guess you did need something so stupid >> that he broke it and immediately billions of dollars starts falling.
Yeah, like you can't deny what he's saying is true.
>> Did you think the money was going to kill him? No, I never thought the money >> going to get buried. I I wish it would have cuz that would have been really funny, but I never thought it was going to kill him. I just love the scene because it it's so over the top, but it has to be because you need to understand that people need to see without a shadow of a doubt that that is real and that shows it. After the billion dollars falls and Ian now fully believes Bear runs back across to where he lives because they live right across the street from each other.
>> I know.
As soon as he opens the door, he finds all the carnage and Nikki is got a gun out and basically like, "Hey, if you don't love me, then I'll just have to take care of this." Yep. Ian flings the door open and says, "Hey, man, I got a billion dollars. What the hell?" Gone. [laughter] Immediately gets shot in the face and Bear just goes, "Okay.
We're just going to accept this. Yeah.
Like there's nothing I can do. I love you."
And they just sit there and there was a part of me that thought this is the end.
Yes. It's going to pan out and it's going to be he's stuck in this and there's nothing he can do. Yep. Which would have been okay. I would have been I I would have said, "Yeah, that's okay." It It's a really downbeat ending, but it makes [music] sense for Bear. I know this sounds really mean, but in my head in the theaters, I [music] I was thinking as a pen out I go, "A YouTuber wouldn't it like this." I I legit was thinking that.
>> I was like, this is totally a YouTuber's ending because he doesn't know how to end his [ __ ] movie.
>> But as Sean is thinking that >> [laughter] >> something happens.
She says, "Why did you shake your head?"
As she start >> He gives the smallest of head shakes.
>> like this.
And that's it. And that right there kicks us into the next 3 minutes.
He says, "I need to go to the bathroom."
>> [laughter] >> He goes to the bathroom and this is the the this part actually made me jump because he walks in and you hear banging on the door and it's loud.
And it's him with the gun in the bathroom.
>> Yeah. Well, like pointing it at his chest, putting it in his mouth, and he's just like, "No, no, no, no, no, can't do it." Okay, so at this point I'm like, "Great. Great. We're going to get a gunshot and a cut to black." But no, as Sean's saying in that, you don't get that either, do you?
>> Yes, because Bear chickens out again.
And it's not just him absolving himself of crimes and misery.
Him committing suicide is actually an absolution and a character turn that would make him the hero of the movie cuz it would set Nikki free.
>> Yes, so the only way that you can basically return this wish is if Bear dies. That's it. That's the only way he can get out of it. So, you are thinking, "Okay, Bear's finally, he's got the courage, he wants to save her, he understands what he did."
So, he doesn't want to shoot himself, so he in my head he thinks back to his [music] cat. Sure, yeah.
>> He's like, "Okay, these pills worked."
And he sits down and he takes one pill and then he downs the whole bottle. And it it does a really good job because as this is happening Nikki is saying, "Maybe we should, you know, have a split. Maybe we shouldn't [music] be together." She's starting to rationalize and uh well, even the craziest version of her is trying to rationalize how to salvage the relationship. But as that's happening, you hear the music of the Willow come out of the box. You hear the noise it makes. And as that happens the the medication start to affect Bear.
And >> I I'm thinking I'm again, when he takes the pills I'm like, "Oh, okay. He's going to sit on the the and it's going to fade to black. A YouTuber would end it like this. But, what happens is is that he turns to go throw up.
But, then he puts down the trash can because you hear a snap. Yep. So, he not only chickens him out of the I'm not saying you're a coward if you don't hurt yourself. But, he does back out of setting Nikki free a second time.
>> explaining like >> [music] >> Bear just does not want to save this girl because he's selfish.
And so, and I love that it does make a note where it's like, "No, he was going to he was going to induce vomiting to throw up the pills because no, he was going to he he backed out again."
But, now he can't help it cuz he snapped just like the willow branch.
Yep, because he left a little willow branch out there and Nikki, you don't hear what she whis but they're certain it's the exact same words. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I And again, it's like and they're about and they're embracing and I'm thinking this is better than it was but a YouTuber would end it like this.
So, like I this is like the fourth time I'm like expec- expecting a fade to black and me being like, "Okay, I'll knock a point off of it because he can't he doesn't know what to do." Yep. for the ending. All right.
>> But, nope, he goes out, they start embracing each other, and they're just staring at each other. Just completely in love with each other.
But, then something happens.
Bear starts to fall to the ground and he starts spitting up stuff and they go and they sit on the couch and you see Bear die and you see Nikki in the wish form crying and then [music] it snaps and she's back to her normal self.
And she realizes that nothing is what it's supposed to be.
Bear's dead, Ian's dead, there's some kind of shrine over here.
What's What's going on? Immediate [music] panic. Yeah. And the best part is you don't know You don't know 100% if Nikki watched all of that happen or not.
>> I know, and that's what's so awesome. To me, she doesn't. She finally It's like she was in a dream the whole time. She doesn't know.
>> Okay. I I would I I'm indifferent either way. Like I like to think that she is In my head, I think it's scarier if Nikki is having to watch all of this happen.
>> And she might be It might be like a dead eye type thing. Yeah. They're making you watch. Because it it makes To me, it makes the entire movie scarier because it's like um I mean, imagine if you were like watching your your body being controlled.
>> Yeah, you're And And then And And then it's like And then it's really scary cuz it's like when they're having sex, it's like you know, she >> Yeah, she may not want to do that. And then it's like you're watching She's watching herself bashing people's heads and display bodies.
I think >> more sense.
It kind of doesn't doesn't because she's able to talk while she's asleep.
>> That's what I was thinking cuz she is conscious that she's in there. And she said And she And she is like she can't I can Don't wake her up. Don't wake her up.
>> talk to you right now.
>> So, in hindsight In hindsight for me, I like to think that Nikki is conscious of what is happening because it makes the movie scarier.
>> Yeah, and I think that's what makes this ending so good is that you can [music] say, "Hey, I think this is what happened."
>> Yeah. I think it makes cuz it makes It makes every love scene an essay scene.
[music] It makes every It makes every uh, violent scene more torturous. And more than anything, uh, that earlier that earlier moment, uh, and this is what I really wanted to to end these points on, is that earlier in the film, when Nikki says, "Do you like me?"
I have been exactly where he's sitting before. Of liking a girl and then her asking if she likes me. And then panicking. And and and panicking, but her line delivery is so perfect.
It's that I and in hindsight, thinking about like the dynamics of Ian and how Nikki knew that Sarah liked him, I don't pre-possession Nikki, I thinks Nikki would have wanted Ian or Bear to be with Sarah. She would have rooted for them.
So, and she's even encouraging him to go with Sarah right before it happened.
>> knows that it's a better fit.
>> Yes. And she knows that she's sleeping with Ian. So, that line delivery is is the damning moment because she's giving him the opportunity and she's trying to give herself the opportunity to reject him. Yeah.
And so, when you think that that Nikki that would have rejected him is trapped in the body the whole time, not only does it make the entire movie scarier, I think about that opening montage of them doing everything together. Oh, at the bar trivia night? Not just the bar No, not the bar. After he breaks the spell and everything is >> Oh, okay. Yeah. They're sleeping together, they're cooking breakfast together, watching shows, constantly cuddling. Just to think about that alone, how torturous that would be for the Nikki that doesn't love him, to have to watch her body like, "Oh, yeah, we're cooking breakfast together. This is awesome." Like that makes that montage itself just as scary as like the rest of the movie. It does.
Uh but uh I do I do think Bear is like 100% the villain and I'm and I'm glad it gave us multiple moments to not root for him.
Yeah, there shouldn't be a moment that you root for Barry in this like our bear. I don't know if his name is Barry or not.
>> It's I think his name is Baron and they call him Bear for short. Got you. But you you should not root for Bear in this movie at all. [music] He set this all in motion.
Yes, like he is the villain. Yeah.
And then that ending, man. She's she's I mean, what do you think happens to Nikki at the end of this movie?
Probably goes and gets the billion dollars.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, man. I'm getting out. Yeah, probably.
>> I'm going to buy my way out of this.
>> else are you going to do? Like how can you say what's happening? This guy is dead with a gunshot to the head.
This guy's taking pills and there's another dead body in there with her face smashed in.
What do you say?
Yeah. Like and the only thing to me, in my head whenever that ending rolled, it was she probably went and got that money and left. [music] >> Yeah, that's it's all it's all good.
>> Cuz there's just a billion dollars inside of that house. Yeah. Uh but uh I think I loved Obsession. I think it gave me more to think about after I left the theater. I think it's uh it's hard it's hard to not compare recent horror movies you watched and it's like and it's hard to judge. It's like is this movie that awesome or is it just you know, we just saw some other horror movies, you know, we've seen Hokum and some Indies and uh a bunch of remakes that have let us down. It's like what what would you give Obsession and do you think you will give Obsession this score in 10 years? Yeah, so with Obsession, I'm I'm saying that this is a I don't have any issues with this film at all.
There's not a point in this movie that I go, I wish they would have done this. I don't mind the length of the film. I don't mind the actors. I don't mind the way that they filmed it. Everything in this movie to me is just top-notch. And it gets me excited for whenever a commentary comes out because I want to hear why he set all this up. So to me, this is a Yeah, this [music] is a This is a 10 out of 10. Like you give it a You give it a seven or 10. I I I think that this is up there with I know I will watch this multiple times. [music] I know I will show it to people who have not seen it. Yeah, it's great. It's fantastic. Yeah, I would I would I would I'd agree. I think it's like Barbarian.
It's [music] a It's the kind of horror movie where it's like I will watch this as many times as I can with people who haven't seen it. So that I can try to watch it with fresh eyes and hear what they say reactively. Yeah, I want to see their reaction to the ending. I don't want them to go, what?
It's gotten to this point? Oh. I think it's the kind of movie that I'll watch for comfort every couple of years.
I could put laundry on and listen to it cuz it's funny and I can watch it and focus on it.
