But, there's one major problem. Coca and tobacco plants were native to the Americas. Some researchers have argued certain Old World plants may have produced nicotine-like compounds, but that still doesn't explain the cocaine. Others believe the mummies were contaminated during modern handling because apparently multiple people accidentally spilled cocaine all over ancient Egyptian remains.
