King Henry II of England introduced the jury system through the Assize of Clarendon in 1166 not for justice, but to transfer legal authority from the Church to the crown, creating a unified common law system that replaced inconsistent local customs and remains the foundation of legal frameworks in England, the United States, Australia, and Canada today.

How a Medieval King Used the Law to Rob the ChurchAjouté :
The jury system you rely on today was invented by a king who needed to take power from the church. Everyone learns Henry II had his archbishop murdered.
That is the drama. It is also the distraction. What Henry actually did was rewrite how England worked. Before him, legal disputes were settled locally, inconsistently, and often by whoever had the most influence over the nearest bishop. Henry wanted the crown in the room instead. In 1166, he passed the Assize of Clarendon. It introduced juries. It created traveling judges who rode circuit across the whole country so that royal law reached places the king never visited. It replaced a patchwork of local customs with a single system.
That system is common law. It is still the foundation of the legal frameworks in England, the United States, Australia, and Canada today. He did not do it for justice. He did it to break the church's grip on the courts. Thomas Becket died because he stood in the way.
The jury survived because it was useful.
