Gelber eloquently captures how Wright used a literal piece of the earth to anchor the soul of modernism against the tide of mass production. It is a sharp reminder that architecture’s greatest power lies in its refusal to be anywhere else.

Why Frank Lloyd Wright Put a Fire at the Center of FallingwaterHinzugefügt:
The fireplace, the most famous fireplace in the world some have called it, which is at the center of the building, laid in layers to look almost like the layered stone of Pennsylvania. It is at its base an actual living rock, a stone that was never moved or at least it's purportedly never moved, that is natural to the site. It is specific to this waterfall, specific to these rocks.
This is a thing that could never be anywhere but where it is.
And in that way he is fighting the problem of mass production.
And at the center of the building, on top of this stone, that's where you build the fire that in in Wright's way of thinking lived inside the walls of the building and animated it like a beating heart.
He liked the idea of, to paraphrase him, of a fire burning in the in the stone of the center of the house as a way of giving the house life. And so at the center of the pinwheel from which all of these platforms cantilever and hover, there's a fire sitting on top of a stone like a campfire sitting on a rock next to a waterfall in the Pennsylvania woods.
