The unedited approach provides a refreshing look at the messy reality of high-level problem-solving. It proves that true expertise lies not in perfection, but in the systematic correction of one's own logic.

Sudoku solution – New York Times 9 May 2026 Hard level sudokuAñadido:
[music] [music] >> Hello fellow Sudokans, welcome to Zen and the Art of the Guardian Sudoku puzzle. It's Saturday the 9th of May 2026.
I hope you are keeping well.
Uh, if you're a Labour supporter in the UK, uh, you will find yourself having a headache today.
Um, >> [sighs] >> uh, they lost big, um, unfortunately, bigly.
Lost bigly, as somebody might put it, uh, in the, uh, local elections.
Uh, gains were made by Farage's horrible Reform UK. Some gains by the Greens, but I think not sufficient, really.
Uh, but, uh, the leader of the Labour Party, um, has written a piece in The Guardian after the election results.
That's Sir Keir Starmer, and he says, >> [gasps] >> "These were very tough election results.
It hurts to lose brilliant local candidates and leaders. I take responsibility for that. I feel it very deeply. But, do you? Do you really take responsibility for it?"
And this is where it's really weird. He says, "While the results will understandably lead to a much lead to much debate about what's changed in British politics, that should not overshadow the fact for years voters have deeply been frustrated with the status quo, constantly hoping that things will get better and that politics will deliver real change in their lives." And he goes on and he says, um, talking about the status quo, at the end he says, uh, uh, I can't find it. Come on, where are you?
Uh, anyway, um, we must break This time things will be different. We must break with the status quo once and for all by building a stronger and fairer country.
He also says, "Not left or right."
What on earth is he talking about? The state he is part he is the status quo, right? And he not done enough to break. What is he talking about?
Doesn't make any sense.
The status quo he represents.
What is what is it earth is he talking about?
>> [sighs and gasps] >> I've read the whole I've read the whole piece. It's not very long. You can read it. It's it doesn't make any sense really. It's just nonsensical.
A silly platitude from a a politician that seems to not understand anything about politics.
So [sighs] and will he be forced out? Maybe.
It's quite possible. We'll see what happens to Keir Starmer soon. But obviously uh some bad news for Labour in Britain.
There for the local elections. Right, let's get on with the game of Sudoku then. This is on the other side of the world in New York Times hard level Sudoku puzzle. We're going to start with digit seven blocking down here, down there, and going across there.
And giving us our first digit our lovely digit seven.
We like digit seven more than other digits. We favor digit seven. We have a a penchant for digit seven.
Eight's blocking up here, up there.
There we go. That gives us an eight there.
>> Mhm.
>> [snorts] >> Uh we've got fives across here.
Almost missed that.
Six and three block across there, so we've got a pair of three and six in those squares.
Which makes these one and two, I think.
So, one blocking down there. There's the one, there's the two.
At the end of this row then, four, eight, nine, I think.
Over here, four, eight.
So, ones over here.
Two's over here as well, actually.
Is that right?
Uh four Is it four, eight? Yeah, four, eight.
So, we're looking for one, two, three.
And we've got one and two here, so that's our three, yeah. And then this is whatever I said was blocking there before, six.
Did I do that right?
One, two. Um Have I made a mistake?
I think I made a mistake. Hold on. I said one, didn't I?
Let me go back. Sorry about this.
Uh how far do I go back?
Six and three.
This is four, eight.
It's not one. I don't need one, do I?
Sorry about that. I made a mistake there.
It's two, four, and six that I need.
Is that right?
No, I got four and eight here. Good god, come on. What's going on?
Three, six, and eight. That's about three, six, and eight. Sorry about that.
Uh three, six, and eight in these squares, right? I don't know which is which. The eights are here.
Not eight.
Ah!
>> I've got two blocking this square. I've got two blocking this square. That is a two.
This is four and eight. This is three and six. Right, and this is three and six. I'm I my sincere apologies from >> [sighs and gasps] >> You can see how I don't edit my horrible mistakes.
Uh making me look dumb at times, but never mind.
I just can't somehow I just can't concentrate on what's missing here.
Is this 369?
I think it is.
Okay.
And so we have one and four down here, so that's a pair of nine. and four.
This is 369. This is one and four. Now, can I actually work out what's left? Is it 257? It is, isn't it? Seven there, seven there, there's a seven.
Five here, there's a five.
Nine is up here, that's nine. What was this?
369 14 two >> [sighs] [laughter] >> I'm sorry. This must be much more of an effort to listen to than it is to actually play as well.
Uh twos block like this. That gives me a pair of twos there blocking down here, blocking down there. There we go.
There's a two.
Two across this way, this way, and down there.
Uh >> [sighs] >> am I on the ball today? No. Do I blame my medication?
Any old excuse will do for me.
>> [sighs] >> Uh we have ourselves an eight blocking across here and across there, so that should be an eight then.
If you're new to the channel wondering what's going on, welcome.
Um I play these games live without editing and I make mistakes and I leave the mistakes in.
Uh and uh so you get to see uh the mistakes that I made and laugh at them.
>> Uh, are we looking for one and four in this column? I think we might be. So, we've got the four blocking there.
There's a four, and there's one.
>> Three blocks this square there's our three there's our six there's our six there.
And there's our six there. Mhm.
Seven and three here's Oh, no. Seven and Oh, no. Sorry.
Still doing it. Seven and one. There we go. I knew it was something. Seven and one there. There's a pair of seven and one over there. So, we got the seven blocking there.
There's a seven there's a one and back on this right-hand side we can put in our four.
Um two across there. There's a two.
With an eight there.
So, I'm missing here four, five, and eight. We've got five and eight together, so that should be a four.
This looks to be four, eight, and nine.
Yep, and four and eight are together, so that should be the nine.
We need a nine in this row, it goes there. The missing digit for this row is six.
>> [sighs] >> Four blocks this square, we need a four in this row, it goes there. This is surely the nine, isn't it?
Yes.
Digits nine, seven, and two are all done.
Uh so, I think we'll just go through the numbers and see what we can spot, like the one blocking like this.
Which is going to give me a three there.
Three across, three down there.
And the last digit to go there is six.
Six across, there's a six.
One blocking that gives me one in that square. This is going to be five.
Five blocking to the top. There's our five missing digit eight.
Eight blocks down there. There's the eight. Last number for that row is four and the missing digit here is three.
One blocking across there. There's a one and last number is four. So a very easy game there. Very straight forward game.
Did I slip up along the way? Yes, I did.
You could see how I slipped up along the way just because I'm not able to remember or pay attention hard enough at the moment to get everything right.
But anyway, I'm sure you played that one fairly much quicker than I did.
Let's say.
All right, thanks for joining me. Take care. Bye-bye.
