There is a drawer in a museum in Philadelphia that has not been properly opened in over a hundred years. Not because it is locked, not because the contents are damaged or lost. In the Asholian Museum in Oxford, there is an inscribed prism of baked clay cataloged [music] as WB444, the Weld Blundle Prism, [music] purchased in 1922 and published in 1939 by the scholar Thorill Jacobson. It contains the Sumerian king list, every ruler before and after a great flood [music] listed with their lengths of reign. Before the flood, kings ruled for exact [music] multiples of 3,600 years. After the flood, they reign in normal human spans, [music] decades, not millennia. Andrew George of University College London, whose critical edition of the Epic of Gilgamesh [music] remains the definitive scholarly text, has noted in published work that the pre flood numbers follow a mathematical structure inconsistent with literal recordkeeping.
