After 18 Years Cancer-Free, Leukemia Returned

[00:00:00]Christopher beat leukemia twice as a child, but after 18 years cancer free [music] it came back for the third time.

[00:00:08]Today I visited Christopher and his father in Singapore where they've [music] been staying since December for his treatment. When I arrived Christopher was upstairs resting [music] so first I sat down with his father.

[00:00:19]When Christopher is 5 years old doctor said that he got the leukemia. After that 1 and 1/2 years [music] he got relapse. So doctor said we have to be transplant. [music] After the transplantation the result is very good. He can [music] live healthy and then continue to study.

[00:00:43]Now he is 25 years. Last year November he told me there is a some blood.

[00:00:49]>> [music] >> It is a church. Mhm.

[00:00:52]Doctor said the leukemia written and doctor said he is a rare case. We have a problem actually [music] for us as a foreigner.

[00:01:04]If we convert to our currency it will very very expensive [music] for us. You could really feel how much this family has gone through over the years.

[00:01:13]>> [music] >> After finally believing that leukemia was gone for good then suddenly [music] finding themselves back in hospitals again nearly two decades later. After speaking with his father I went upstairs to finally [music] meet Christopher himself.

[00:01:28]And honestly what surprised me most was how calm he seemed.

[00:01:32]I was a very little when I had leukemia before I was 5 years.

[00:01:37]Um been through [music] a lot of treatments, a lot of injections, chemotherapy. I don't remember how many days exactly but it feels like almost forever. And that time the doctor says [music] that I need a bone marrow transplant.

[00:01:52]I just went through it.

[00:01:53]>> [music] >> Recently everything got back again like when it was 2005. And he got diagnosed again with leukemia for the third time. [music] I would like to think that it's not really painful for me.

[00:02:07]At least I can control my mind >> [music] >> and help my body.

[00:02:11]Even after everything he's gone through, Christopher still talks about the future with [music] hope. And I think that's what stayed with me the most after meeting him.

[00:02:20]>> [music] >> Right now, Christopher is recovering after his bone marrow transplant. The leukemia is completely gone, but the journey still isn't over. [music] There's still ongoing treatments, monitoring, recovery, and medical costs ahead for both him and his family.
