Full Walk Around on my 2005 Dyna Super GlideAdded:
What is going on, YouTube? I'm Brandon and this is my 2005 Dina Superglide.
Before we get into the bike here, I'll let you guys know this bike started out as my wife's bike. We picked this up in December of 2021, shortly before we made the decision that we were going to move, and I ended up selling my bike, made the trip halfway across the country, and this slowly became what you see today.
I'll drop in a couple pictures of what this thing looked like when we first got it, but it was slammed to the ground, kind of grandpa glided out, and I've slowly been building this up over the course of the last four years now. Um, this last winter, this thing came all the way down to the frame. If you guys aren't familiar with the series, you can check that out. Uh, but it came all the way down to the frame and we changed up the color, did some big engine modifications, and I've got about 400 miles on it now since I put it all back together. This thing is riding great.
Couple small little issues to work out, but we're getting through it. As we go through the bike here today, I think I'm just going to start at the front and work my way all the way to the back. A little history. When we picked this bike up, I was told that I was going to look at a 2006 Dina, and it was going to be a flip job between me and my mom's husband. Uh, he knew the guy, sent me down there, check it out, and I ended up falling in love with it when I saw it. I got down to the bike, realized 39 mm front end. It had the chrome mags on it already. Uh, what I did not know, I learned at the day that I went and looked at this, the '04 and '05 came optional with fuel injection. I got the bike home, showed my wife, we talked about it, and basically paid him out on what we were expecting to make on the bike. So, up in front, we got the chrome mags. Um, I do have some cheap eBay Amazon rotors on there, uh, which later in the video, I'm going to talk about my plans for the future. There's not much more we can do, but I still got some things I want to do. Still running the stock single disc brake. Um, I've got a cheap Drag Specialties fender on here. I'm not a big fan of it. Uh, but that is a very temporary thing. We kind of just ran out of the budget, getting close to springtime here. Uh, so there are still some changes to be made up front. I am still rocking the Memphis Shades Rio Grand Sport fairing or sport windshield, I should say. I get a lot of flack for this. People telling me, "Rip off the fairing, rip off the back rest. I don't need them. It looks better without them." Uh, the whole plan with this bike, it's ready for a thousand milei day at any point. It's ready for date night. It's ready for whatever I want to throw at it. You're not riding it. You don't have to worry about it. So, rocking the the windshield here. This is my third one on the bike. I have pretty poor luck with them. I don't know if I'm mounting it wrong. I don't know if they're getting abused going down the road. It's got some cracks in it. Not the prettiest thing in the world, but completely serves its purpose. Uh, as we make our way or I guess underneath that front lighting, I've got a Custom Dynamics Shark Demon headlight. Super bright. I leave it wired in on the brights all the time. Uh, cuz as we get into my bars, you'll know I don't have the option to switch back and forth between them. Uh, so super bright all the time. Forks, I am running 2in over uh, I think VWIN manufacturing forks.
They were pretty budget friendly.
internals. I'm running racete suspension with Gold Valve emulators. Uh those do add a little bit more height. So, you'll notice I've got about an inch and a half uh maybe close to 2 in that are stuck up above the forks. It's just way too tall if I bring them all the way up. Um so, I'm probably I'm probably somewhere in the neighborhood about 3 to 3 and 1/2 in over stock ride height in the front end there. Kind of moving into the cockpit here. bars are 6-inch death metal racing risers with a pullback. I'm running a Koso digital gauge. Uh the gauges are something that I've gone through quite a few variations on over the years. I just had the single mount gauge. I had the Mickey Mouse gauge bezel. I was going to end up running the tachometer. I never did that. I turned it in. I I wired in all my dummy lights and I had a cord to plug in my phone and everything, keep my cameras charged while I was riding. Uh it was kind of atrocious. I ran it for probably a year and a half or two years before I switched out to the super clean lowprofile Koso gauge. Uh gives you the option to run the 2018 and up soft tail style gauge. That's basically all it is.
And then I used to run a RAM mount to hold my phone here. Switched everything out to Quadlock. Uh ran just the basic quad lock for a long time. I really liked it, but uh I was like when I'm out on a road trip, I hit rain, I would run into charging issues. all my stuff would die because the charger plug would get water in it. This one of the pieces on the bike that is kind of bulky. It would look cleaner without it, but it's one of those things. This thing is still kind of geared toward uh function over form.
So, I've got it cleaned up the best way I can. One of those things I'm not willing to give up. Uh keep my maps open, keep my music accessible, keep my hands free, all that good stuff. Clutch lever. I've got a chrome one finger easy pull clutch setup. I absolutely love this thing. I ran one on my old bike. I wanted one for a long time. I put this one probably halfway through the riding season last year. Uh this thing feels amazing paired with the new clutch that we're going to get to here in a minute.
It's perfect. I mean, super easy in and out.
I'm running some Nest oval mirrors. I actually had these on my last bike as well. I bought these from Speed King Cycles in Riverside. I went down to look at I don't know something somewhere one day down in their shop uh before I moved out of California. I saw these up there.
Had to have them. Got the left and right Nest oval mirrors. Uh right side for my throttle because I got rid of all my gauges up here. I'm running a built well standalone throttle. Makes it so my throttle and my idle cable work just as intended. Cleans it up quite a bit. It's one of those things I wouldn't mind really kind of polishing up to match some of the rest of it here, but haven't got to it yet. Running the stock brake perch here. Uh I do have the matching one-finger brake lever to match the clutch side. And then cables, I'm running just some clear braided clutch and cable or clutch cable and throttle cables. Looks I I like the way they look over the stock black ones.
They do weather out. I actually changed the the clutch cable had taken quite a beating over the last couple years. Put a fresh one on this winter. Looks great.
Uh running some polished aluminum triple trees here. I've got those cleaned up pretty well over the winter. Fairly new neck bearings. I put those in sometime during last riding season. And uh what a difference neck bearings will make in your bike, right? If we move down low, I'm running the Bung King California crash bar. Uh that's another thing where people telling me get rid of the crash bar. you don't need it. I don't stunt my bike uh as much as I would like to. It is really one of those things that's nice to be able to kick your leg out on a road trip. Have that little bit different seating position. You'll notice I grip taped them to keep my feet from slipping while I'm riding. Uh without it, my foot kind of would slip around a little bit. I couldn't really get comfortable on there. That grip tape super easy to change out, super easy to install, and uh works great. I'm running some cheap Amazon lights down low and that was one thing during my build series on this bike. I didn't know if I was going to put those back on. I've got some pictures of me going down the road before and I just I think it looks pretty good with those down low. Um, they light up the corners really great.
Super cheap. I mean, I think both of them were like 20 or 30 bucks. Front motor mount. So, I run Drag Specialties like OEM replacement motor mounts, but I do have the Sputh stabilizer kit on there. Haven't noticed a huge difference. I don't really I never really fought a wobble on this bike, but it's one of those peace of mind things.
I've installed it on bikes that I have struggled with a wobble on, and there's no beating it. It's uh pretty easy to install. The rear one's a little bit more of a challenge, but I've got a couple videos throughout the years on installing those.
As we make our way, I guess we keep working our way. We're going to get to the engine here. Um I bought this Thunder Header. This Thunder Header is pretty beat up. Nothing better than a narrow glide front end Dina FXR with Thunder Heather. Kind of a classic look, classic style, uh, classic sound. The performance on it is great. Uh, we welded in some bungs over the winter, and I'll get to the reason why we had to do that here in a minute. For the engine, I pulled it out of the bike, of course, when I had everything stripped down for powder coat, and we dropped in a Fuel Moto 95 in kit. I ran the Fueling OE Plus cam plate. Uh, I ran the Woods 408 TWW 40848 cams. It pulls incredibly well through all the RPM ranges. It doesn't really like to be at low RPM anymore. I might have gone a little aggressive on the cam, but it it feels great, honestly. Uh, pistons, I could have ran the 10 12 to one compression pistons. I did 9.75 to1 uh CP Curillo piston. CP Gillo pistons.
Uh, I didn't want to go extreme, right?
I still do want to be able to get on this thing, go out and rip it as far as I want, not worry about blowing head gaskets out of it. Uh, although I do have all comedic gaskets in this bike now, I just nothing more trusted than those comedic gaskets. I've had extremely good luck with them over the years, and we're not going backwards on that. Now, uh, air intake. I've got just a Arllest stage one classic air intake. I've got a video on my channel where I made my own external breathers. Um, I plugged off the vents inside the throttle body to keep all that oil out of my engine. Um, I actually I've had a couple variations of how I've ran this external breather. Uh, last riding season before I had it all torn down this winter. It was real big and bulky hose. I tapped in some pipe fittings here. Uh this year I've got it cleaned up where I've got a real thin uh it was basically brake line. Um I might try to change it up. I might pull it off, paint it black so it's not so obvious. Um but then I transitioned that into a stainless hose. Ran my stainless hose down and I've got a little filter hanging out down here. Uh and then uh we've got our oil pressure gauge. This is a VWIN manufacturing oil pressure gauge. Nothing fancy. Gives you real-time data. Um, again, ran a stainless braided hose here. Uh, I do need to try to find a shorter one. The size that I needed was out of stock when I put this together. So, it's a little longer. You'll notice it kind of swoops, goes down, goes up, comes back down. I'd like to make it where it's just a little bit cleaner. Come down here behind the throttle body. I can tie it up and then get it fitted right down where I want it to go. powering the entire engine system. Uh this year I sent a message out to ThunderMax. I know one of the guys over there, asked them what the chances are of them wanting to work with me on this. And uh didn't hear anything back. They I I purchased a Thundermax anyway. They and then they got back to me a couple days later said, "Hey, we'd love to work with you." Um made a couple moves around there and they actually supplied me with an ECM, which is why we have those bungs welded in there. We took this from a very primitive fuel injection to something modern, constantly tuning. Uh, I can feel a major difference with it. Like even the first few rides that I took versus the last trip I just took my daughter down to Kansas City this last weekend, I can feel it getting better. I can hear the changes in the bike. Uh, it's great. One thing I didn't touch on is we are running a HPI 55mm throttle body. uh fueling injectors in there. Stock size, I think we're running 4.3 grams per second. With the power that this bike's making, which I still don't know exactly what it is yet, that's more than enough.
I don't want to over fuel it. I don't want to overshoot it. If I needed more later, it's not that hard to change out.
Uh transmission, still running all the stock internals on the 5-speed there. Uh I really don't mind a 5-speed transmission. Honestly, these 5-speed transmissions from Harley are probably better than anything they put out before. These things are dang near bulletproof. I mean, now that I say that, I guess we're going to go test it, right? But uh completely resealed everything on the transmission and um I don't know, no need. Even when I had a six-speed transmission, I was in fifth gear the majority of the time. Only time I clicked six was when I was doing 90 to I don't know 110 on a closed course of course.
Uh attached to the transmission and tied into the exhaust. We're running the RamJet unbreakable thunder header bracket. Uh I had broke my OEM thunder header bracket. Everybody knows that they're problematic. Uh Ramjet makes an incredible product. I powder coated that to match the frame. Here I'm running a Saddleman stepup seat. I know a lot of guys are transitioning to some other stuff, but as far as I'm concerned, uh this is probably my fourth Satleman seat between the bikes, the the different bikes that I've had. I absolutely love this thing. Um I had a tuck and roll on here a couple years ago, maybe about a year ago. Uh it was completely worn out and I went and bought just a nice smooth one, some some cross stitching in the back. Uh got a bar back rest to match the cross stitch in the passenger area. Uh just put that on there. I've gotten praise from the misses on how comfortable it is in comparison to the old one. And then we'll kind of move down rear suspension. I had a set of progressive 490s that I ran on my 2017 Dina when I was selling the bike to move out here. I pulled them off. That was one of the first things I stuck on this bike when I kind of started making it mine. Those shocks probably have 50,000 miles on them now. I would guess I justified my purchase here.
And I went with the 14-in Legends Revo Arc suspensions. Fully tunable. I've got these things set up where I mean it feels like it it feels like I'm riding on a cloud.
It's incredible. I used to run a slider on my shocks and uh my wife liked them because she liked to kick her feet up on there. I got rid of those sliders. I went to Ramjet and I purchased their 12-point bolt mounting kit. Uh the stainless was out of stock or the polished stainless was out of stock, so I ended up running the blacks. I will probably switch those out to stainless to match the rest of the 12point ARP hardware that I've decked out the majority of the bike in, which I haven't even really talked about, but we can show a couple clips of it. Fully kitted out with 12point bolts almost everywhere that I could put them. There's still a couple that I need to change out. Swing arm. Still just running a stock swing arm. I considered going aftermarket swing arm, but with the money I was spending on the bike, I didn't really need it. I considered purchasing a chrome swing arm. Again, didn't really need it. Something that I can change out later if I wanted to, but uh went with the blue. I was hoping it didn't overpower anything. And I am really happy with the way that that blue swing arm turned out. Going to the back again.
Running the same style rotor in the front. kind of just some cheap decentish rotors. Nothing fancy. Stock brake, stock master cylinder or I guess OEM replacement master cylinder. I had cracked my original one. I bought this chrome one. I can't remember where I purchased it from, what brand it is, but basically an OEM replacement.
Um, and then on this side of the bike that I'm looking at, I switched out to a TC Bros chain conversion kit. Um, Drag Specialties chain. I've got a I want to say it's it might even be a Drag Specialties curve license plate mount here. Um, custom dynamics tail light, which I've considered swapping out to a little bit low pro, but I mean, you really can't argue with the Custom Dynamics name. Uh, for comfort, I know I said we're going to work front to back, but I'm bouncing around a little bit.
Foot pegs. Uh, in the rear, I'm running the Thrashin P54 pegs for the misses. And then I'm running a set of Joker Machine mini floorboards that I had bought for myself at a swap meet. I picked them up for like 50 bucks. Consider not buying them.
The guy that I was with told me the resale value was there. I'd probably end up liking them. Uh I've been running them for probably 6 years now.
Um OG garage bagger like honeycomb style brake pedal.
So, I picked that up and I had actually taken my brake arm to a fabricator that I knew. He fabbed up a little bracket for me. Um, cut the head off of the bracket off and welded that little bracket on there so I could run that brake pedal. I've considered swapping it out cuz it is a little bit sloppy. It doesn't hit anything, but it's never really fit like tight. It works great.
No need to change it out. Uh, on the left side, I used to run an aluminum shift arm and um I I chewed up the chewed up the splines on that aluminum shift arm. Swapped it back to just a chrome OEM shift arm. I've got a I think OG Yeah, it's an OG foot peg on there. Um, powder coated that blue tires. I'm a big Michelin guy. I've always had good luck with the Michelin Commander series. Uh, I've got a Commander 2 in the rear, which I prefer. Commander 3 in the front that is about ready to be changed out.
Uh, probably pushing my luck with it a little bit. I will probably swap that out to a Commander 2. Um, get quite the mileage out of them. They're nice and hard in the center, nice and sticky on the sides. They carve up pretty good.
Uh, if we dig into the primary, I'm running a OEM compensator. I'm running um I like OEM replacement stator that I changed out a couple years ago. Nothing didn't need anything fancy.
My electronics are kind of bare bones on this thing. Stock clutch basket. I just put in a Barnett extra plate clutch kit.
Uh I've always ran the uh OEM replacement clutches, either Drag Specialties, actual HD branded. Um I was in a bind. I needed a clutch. I had one here in the garage for another bike that I'm working on and I couldn't be happier with that Barnett clutch kit that I've got in there. It feels great, grabs nice. Um, I shouldn't ever have to worry, at least for a long time anyway, about any issues with this thing.
Inside, I guess inside that primary, I do have converted to the sealed bearing for my main shaft. Um, ever since I installed that and did the chain kit, I've been fighting a little bit of a leak. I can't for the life of me find where it's coming from. um it doesn't really show its face on short in town rides. If I go ripping 100 or 200 miles, I'm getting little spots that are dripping. So, that'll be something I have to address. Um with the clutch install, I realized thanks to some of the people in the comments on YouTube, I made a mistake with the oil that I'm running. Um it is uh I need to swap it out to ATF. I'm going to go ahead and do that probably sometime this week. And after I go rip it, if I'm dripping some red on the ground, I'll know it's primary side. If it's not, I need to focus somewhere inside that transmission. Um, it's probably primary that chain is throwing it around pretty good. I don't have chain guards on, so it makes kind of a mess when it starts leaking, but not really unmanageable.
Just need to find it, fix it. It's uh part of the game here. I mean, it really if all I'm fixing, if all I'm chasing is a couple little minor leaks after having this thing down to uh buckets of parts, then I think I'm in pretty good shape here.
Uh, I know I talked about the pad on the back rest a little bit. This is a Harley Medallion series uh, mount. It's actually for 06 and up Dinas. So, when I put this on, and it's one of the reasons why it lives on the bike, I have to squeeze it pretty hard, but once it's locked on there, this thing is solid. It does not rattle, doesn't vibrate, doesn't shake, doesn't nothing. Acts exactly how it should. Um, if I don't have my wife on the back with me, it's a perfect spot to throw in a big packout bag. uh gives me a nice back rest when I'm on those thousand mi plus days.
And uh that's pretty much it. The bike doesn't lean nearly as much as it did anymore. I knew with how hard it leaned before, I was going up another inch and a half or so in the rear. Um I installed a 2-in kickstand block from Bung King.
Uh just a chunk of aluminum that contours the the kickstand there and uh keeps this thing from leaning so hard.
Um, in the rear I do have my mounts on here for my Leather Pros. They are kind of beat up. My Leather Pros are extremely beat up. That's another part.
They probably got tens of thousands of miles on them. Uh, the brackets on the Leather Pros do kind of wear out over time. You'll see mine are oval out. My left bag was loaded down one day. I didn't have it latched right and it actually went skidding down the road.
So, it it looks beat up. Uh, I will replace those with most likely another set of Leather Pro bags. uh they have proven themselves time and time again. I can get a ton of stuff in there.
Probably overload them for some of the trips that I go on. We can get into what the plans are for this thing in the future. So, I get a lot of people telling me, "Do not get rid of this OEM paint." They love it. They like the way the gray accents with the blue, which I agree with. Uh but the vision for this, man, this bike is really bringing in a uh like a childhood goal of mine. And I never thought I would have the skill or the ability or the the means to do something like this. Um, the goal is to strip all this. Maybe even get another set of tins. I might keep these ones. I don't know. But we're going to go black with a set of classic hot rod flames.
Like orange and red flames with the nice little blue pinstripe to accent all the blue that's on the bike now. Something that it in my mind it just has to be done. That is when I will pretty much consider this bike done. Uh when I do it, I will probably get a nice T- Sport fairing. Not like OEM original fairing, but a repop tort fairing. Paint that to match. I don't I have a hard time cuz I really do love the windshield. I don't know if that's the direction I'll go with it, but I'll probably mount it, see if I like it, have it there as an option. If I hate it, then I'll resell it. Uh, in the future I would like to do some brakes.
I'd like to go with probably some Brembo brakes. I need to get a set of Galer rotors back on here. I had gers on my last bike that I was just completely in love with. Um, and I mean, aside from those things, there's not really a whole lot left for me to do on this bike. Uh, the brakes would be a big one because those are, you know, the brakes should kind of really be the first thing you always look for or always upgrade. Um, they work great. They're high and tight.
No complaints. But with everything I have done to the bike, why not give myself a good set of brakes, right? Oh, this is this is one thing I've got a lot of questions on and I've considered making a video for it. When I got rid of all my gauges, I switched this thing over to just like a car ignition style.
People ask me where I got it from. I bought the key switch from Cruzy Originals and I basically just opened up the schematic and figured out what I needed to make this thing work. So, key on, brings in all your accessories, uh, runs your fuel pump, does all that stuff. You just crank it over, this thing will start. Uh, little bit of a safety factor. You don't have a way to kill the bike from the handlebars. So, if your hand is occupied, then you're going to be looking for that that key switch down there. But, running it for about a year and a half now. Haven't had a problem yet. Hope I don't ever have one.
uh kind of just kind of clean, kind of simple.
And I wish I could remember the name of the brand from the box that it came in. All I know, I saw someone on YouTube do it.
I wanted to do it. I was already stripping a ton of my wires out of this thing. I've got a I've got a ton of the harness that's cut back here. I've only got I think probably I don't know, eight wires that run up through the neck on this thing. uh small little harness to supply my KOSO, power and ground for my handlebars, and then my fuel pump wiring. Oh, and then my headlights, of course, too. Uh I have the option I have the power switch ran up there for it if I can ever find a way to do it. I have no brake lights when I hit my brake lever up here. Um but I think they sell some inline switches that you can tie into your banjo bolt here. It'd be ideal to get those brake lights back, but very seldom am I using my front brake and not using my rear brake.
I don't rely on anyone seeing those lights anyway to uh keep me safe out on the road. So, there you have it. Hope you guys have enjoyed watching this series. If you haven't, then I'd encourage you to go run back, watch it.
It's categorized under Brandon's Dina.
You can check it all out from start to finish.
uh go further back, you can see what kind of what this thing started his life as. And uh it's been a fun progression to get here. So, the whole concept for this started out on a vision board probably four or five years ago. Uh it was a goal of mine to build a bike from the frame up. I don't know if you can say that I built it. I feel like I did. I mean, I didn't fab a bunch of my own parts. So, there wasn't really a whole lot of custom stuff that I had to make for this bike, but it took a lot of meticulous thought, planning, uh, took a lot of money, and I couldn't be happier with this thing. Uh, when I took this bike on, when I got rid of my last bike, I didn't think I was going to ever have a bike that would fill the void uh, like that one did. That was supposed to be my forever bike. And honestly, I would take this thing time and time again over that bike. taking something, making it completely what you want it to be, completely how you want it to be. Um, kind of kind of a special thing here.
Like I said, making childhood dreams come true. So, thank you guys for all your support, no matter how it is that you show it. Check out the team over at ThunderMax. You can use the code Gillstrap 10. Save you 10% on anything on their website. I've got Patreon available for for some exclusive content. Uh, you guys get a lot more of that during the riding season. Uh, I I capture so much footage during the summer that it can't all possibly make it to YouTube. I put some more of that stuff out over there on the Patreon. Uh, we've got some merch available. I really want to put this thing on a t-shirt in some form or fashion.
I've had some I've got a couple koozies available. I might stick those up on that big cartel website. Uh, very limited supply on those. I make them all myself. It kind of takes some work to do. So check it all out. Um I mean if your support is just watching the videos and interacting with them then thank you guys for that too. It honestly means the world to me. Uh it's these video series that made a lot of this possible. It has funded a a lot of this over the years.
It continues to fund it. Funds the trips, the uh the parts sometimes just the gas. But I mean you guys get it.
Super grateful for all of you and I hope you guys enjoy this thing as much as I do.
