Texas data center boom could strain state water supplyAjouté :
New at 5:30, Texas is becoming a major hub for AI and cloud computing. There are more than 400 data centers operating or under construction statewide, but a new study by the University of Texas finds data centers could put pressure on Texas water supplies. According to the study, data centers could account for up to 9% of the state's water use by 2040.
Some of these facilities can use huge amounts of water to cool servers and generate electricity. Some of the newer facilities have made commitments to recycle their water to limit their use.
But researchers at UT say the lack of clear reporting standards makes it difficult to measure the full impact, especially as Texas faces ongoing drought concerns. The study calls for more transparency and better long-term planning as the industry continues to expand.
