The Kenyatta Avenue Viaduct Project in Nairobi demonstrates how elevated road infrastructure can optimize urban traffic flow by separating express traffic from local traffic, reducing congestion in busy city corridors. This infrastructure upgrade, implemented by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), includes elevated road sections, expanded junctions, pedestrian walkways, cycling lanes, improved street lighting, and drainage systems. The project addresses the fundamental urban planning challenge of mixing different traffic types within the same corridor, which causes delays during peak hours. By creating dedicated lanes for through traffic while maintaining local access, such viaduct projects improve mobility, reduce travel time, and support urban economic development by enabling smoother movement between key areas like the CBD, Upper Hill, and Ngong Road.

INSIDE NAIROBI'S MASSIVE KENYATTA AVENUE VIADUCT PROJECT | LIGHTING AND RESURFACING BEGINS π°πͺAdded:

Hello guys and welcome once again to another infrastructure update here in Nairobi. Today we're taking a detailed look at one of the biggest ongoing road projects inside Nairobi CBD that is the Kinyata Avenue viuct project and right now we are walking through this busy section of the city where major construction works are continuing as the government pushes ahead with the plans to ease congestion between the CBD upper hill and Gong Road corridors. This project is part of the larger valley road kinata avenue gong road program being implemented by the Kenya urban roads authority commonly known as kura.
The verdict is expected to create a smoother flow of traffic by separating through traffic or express traffic from local CBD traffic. Something that has been a major challenge in Nairobi for many years. So like you will see ahead you'll see concrete columns, steel reinforcements, barricades and heavy machinery spread across sections of this corridor. Now this project had stalled for several years because of funding challenges but works resumed from the government unlocked some financing through the road securitization program.
Now since then construction activity has intensified and the transformation here is now becoming more visible every month. So sit back, relax and follow this 36 minutes update right here on Nairobi Connect.
Woohoo!

at the moment. This section of Nairobi remains one of the busiest transport corridors in the city. Thousands of private vehicles, buses, delivery trucks, and pedestrians move through this area every single day. Neta Avenue connects several important parts of Nairobi including community area, Upper Hill, Uhuru highway, Moy Avenue and parts of uh the central business district. But because of this, congestion has always been a major issue especially during morning and evening rush hours. Now, one of the biggest challenges has been the mixing of local traffic and express traffic plus also pedestrian activity all within the same corridor. Vehicles heading towards upper hill or gong road are forced to compete for space with vehicles entering the CBD leading to several or rather serious delays. That is exactly why this vioduct project is considered such an important infrastructure upgrade for Nairobi.
It's like we are planting grass from right here. Not so sure. But uh let's just check this side how it looks like.
Yeah.
Just want to walk you through the project.
I think they're laying grass right here.
But uh let me just walk there and uh also find out if uh grass they're laying or something else.
Hey girl.
You can see the pillars are already standing. Huh?
I think uh we now moving closer to the end of this project.

According to the Kenya urban roads authority, this viuctuct will create an elevated traffic connection through parts of the CBD and upper hill corridor allowing vehicles to bypass some of the major bottlenecks at ground level. The project includes elevated road section such as where we walking currently, expanded junction improvements like we will see ahead of us, better pedestrian walkways, cycling lanes, urban beautifification, improved street lighting and drainage upgrades.
The verduct is expected to improve movement between Valley Road, Kinata Avenue, Mong Road and is avenue. Once completed, motorists traveling across Nairobi CBD towards Upper Hill and Western Nairobi are expected to save significant travel time, especially during peak hours.

So this is part of the ongoing expanding junctions along this critical junction of state road pinata avenue and as we head on towards the valley road area and on the opposite side the gong road. Now what is happening here is currently resurfacing of this section as you can see right there. So let's walk through it and see how this place is also coming up. So I want to take you so this is house road. I want to show you uh the latest uh additions onto this project from this side.
So let's let me just walk you up the hill here for you to see how this uh project is coming up from this side. I want to cross over to that other side to show you how it looks like.
So this is how the vioaduct is coming.
You can see the pedestrian foot path is already clearly defined right here. And I can also see the drainages here have been covered.
Also quite impressive. Look at how this project came from.
And the grass on the far left is already up.
Good one.
So, so you want to go up to that stretch that is on your way to state house. But, uh, I just want to show you how this project is coming up.
Let's just walk back and see.
I can see they've laid a fresh tarmac. I think they're doing a resurfacing of Kinata Avenue from where we're heading to.
So, let's just go there and uh show you how this project is coming up.
Yeah, I can see they're laying a fresh tarmac or surfacing this particular stretch.
this busy stretch of the Nata Avenue fire duct.
This is quite impressive, right?
Finish house. So quite impressed.
So continue to walk here.
show is coming up. So well, so this is the solid surface this particular stretch right here.
See it's crush.
Yeah.
Heat.
Now what we should expect in the coming The Kenya urban roads authority says the project is not only about vehicles but also about improving nonmotorized transport within the city. That is why we are seeing wider sidewalks already starting to show up, new paving works, dedicated cycling sections which we are also expecting to see in the coming few days. Better crossings, modern street lighting. This is important because Keta Avenue has extremely high pedestrian traffic every day due to offices, businesses, hotels, government institutions and public transport connections. So apart from easing vehicle congestion, the project is also expected to create a more modern and organized urban environment.
Very pleased to watch the integrity center.
It's a fresh right here. So I won't take you up to there. Just want to cross over.
and uh go to that other side and also show you how this place looks like.
Let's go to this side.
I know that.
So what you're seeing there is part of the ongoing resurfacing.
of this critical section. As you like all know this section had been worn out especially with the recent flooding and heavy downpour but it seems the Kina urban roads authority are now putting there's some focus on making sure that they've been surfaced in this section.
So let's continue walking towards that other side and see how the project is coming up.
Come on.
This side here live wire steamer.
They're fixing it.
So, but the project was initially expected to move much faster after its launch in 2020. But funding delays caused a major slowdown. I works resumed and current reports indicate that completion is now expected around late 2026 with broader integration continuing afterwards. As construction progresses further this year, Nairobi residents are expected to see even larger elevated sections becoming visible above Kineta Avenue.
So good people, thank you so much for walking with us up to here. We are still tracking this massive project that is the Kinata Avenue vioaduct project and now we're heading towards this side of the institutional area which is upper hill uh towards the LSLassi Avenue and also see how that other side has come since the last time we were in this particular area. Thank you so much for the continued support. In case you're new here, this is the perfect time for you to click onto that subscribe and welcome to this community and this family. We truly appreciate you being here. You can like this video and you can also share it with those who want to see such content in Nairobi and the Republic of Kenya. So let's continue moving towards this other side and also show you how this project is coming up.
So this is towards uh the upper hill area and what I'm seeing is sort of like a barricade that has been placed here. I think this is to pave way for the ongoing uh resurfacing of uh this area.
So, we'll still move towards that side to also show you how this area looks like.
So I think they want to install lights cuz you can see they've already installed the poles and uh seems like now now doing the wiring to now you know light up this place. Let's continue moving right side just to see how this place is coming up.
Really impressed by how important is coming up.
Yes. So these are the poles that uh I presume they want to install or light up this street. As you can see the road on this side is wide.
As you can see the curves there very smooth and vehicles are moving there and erupted except now for the marking which I think now we follow after you know the final steps of this construction and I'm also impressed looking at uh how they've now thought of you know putting up the lighting of this street that is also quite impressive cuz you want Nairobi to also lit tonight. You don't want we don't want a dark city because uh we want a city that you know will promote a 24-hour economy and this is exactly why such projects matter especially when it comes to urbanization planning and even you know improving the overall uh urbanization of Nairobi.
So let's continue moving towards uh this institutional area up ahead and uh you can see they're also planting grass on this side. So I think now this project on this side is coming now to an end cuz I can see the pedestrian foot paths on this side is clearly defined. The drainage there is already in place and now this is part of the landscaping like uh we know CRBC this you know how the workmanship of uh CBC is usually so let's continue moving towards this Hey, heat.
Hey.
Heat.
Heat.
Wow, This place is looking good.
Loving it.
I want to cross over this side.
this. This is one of those quiet streets in Upper Hill that we sometimes rarely show you. And today, let's walk through here and see how the organization of this side looks like. So, this is one of those shortcuts. Like, we know we are Kenyans and we like shortcuts.
And uh so we want to walk towards the other side of Elassi Avenue and also see how the VC project is compared to the last time you were here. Look at the organization here.
Like I like to say this is an institutional point and it's usually quiet, serene, no less chaotic and being that uh is in upper hill and we should expect to see or expect to see this uh you know serene and ambiance.
So let me just show you how this side looks like before we now join uh let's lassi downstretch Bye-bye.
It's awesome.
didn't project.
What is happening here is part of a major larger transformation taking place across Nairobi. We are seeing new flyovers, interchanges, BRT plans, railway upgrades, pedestrian and passes, urban road expansions. Projects like the Gong Road, Nvasha road fly over, green park and pass and Nairobi railway city are all aimed at improving mobility within the capital. Thea Avenue Vacc therefore becomes part of Nairobi's wider push towards becoming a more connected and modern African city.
I think they doing a foot this side.
products now coming up.
Heat. Heat.
So when you're driving from uh or rather when you're driving right here, this is Avenue, you need to be extra cautious because this road is so wide as you can see and it's not clearly marked.
So therefore when you are changing lanes here you need to be extra keen looking at how things are here.
And I think uh from behind us where we've come from as you can see this side on the right side there are no clear walking paths or clear designated walking paths.
And so what I think uh is currently happening from where we've left is you know putting together the foot paths of the other side. So that is what is ongo which is a good thing cuz looking at how things are here look at how pedestrians are moving uh on this uh side it's not that safe.
So therefore I think the engineers the supervising of this project which in this case is the China road and bridge corporation CRBC and the supervisor being the Kenya urban cross authority put consideration onto this side especially with the walking paths marking the lighting like many of you have always suggested in our videos. But thank you so much for walking with us up to here. Going to end our video right here.
