Naval vessels track contacts using Electronic Support Measures (ESM) systems through two primary methods: AIS (Automatic Identification System) for ship identification, which displays vessel data including MMSI, course, speed, and location on the AIS screen, and radar emission monitoring via the threats tab, which shows signal amplitude, bearing, radar band, and frequency; both contact types can be sent to the Tactical Maneuvering Assistant (TMA) for further analysis and engagement coordination.

>> Hey everyone, I'm Charlie Murphy aka FPS Chazley here with Modern Naval Warfare and today we're going to show you how to track contacts with the ESM mast in two different ways. The first way is with AIS, which is a ship identification system. And then the second is monitoring ships radar emissions, colloally known as ESM.
So, let's get into it. First, we're going to head on over to the ESM station, which you can also get to by pressing F7. You're going to want to be at least periscope depth or shallower.
Uh periscope depth is 52 ft. So, we are there. We're surfaced right now, actually. So, let's raise the ESM mast and then we'll pull this slider all the way to the right to extend it as far out as it will go. Okay, so this map here shows all present electronic emissions that we're seeing. And then there's also a polar plot here on the right of all all the tracks. Just has uh bearing data and range overlaid on it. The ESM station has three little substations up here. Got the threat screen, communications screen for radio intercepts, and then also the AIS screen. And if we come over to the AIS screen here, we can see we have two civilians nearby. And if we just click on one of these tracks here, say track 38, we get all the AIS data for the the ship. We got its track number, the unique identifier, the MMSI, uh the bearing to the track, its uh reported course and speed. And again, this is not data that we know. This is what the AIS is reporting. And then also its latitude and longitude in a decimal format. And then the country of origin is China. So once we see that, we can go ahead and press track. And this will send it to the TMA. And if we head on over to fire control to the TMA screen here, we can see we got our track A1. A for AIS1. So that is how you track a contact with the AIS. So, let's head back to ESM station and we'll also track radar emissions via ESM.
So, let's come on back to the threats tab here. So, we got we got a bunch of tracks emitting radar here. We can just click on one of these things. Uh, you know, it gives you a bunch of uh information about it. The amplitude of the signal is how strong it is basically bearing, what radar band, and then the corresponding frequency. with that. If we go ahead and click on any one of these tracks, we can see some info about it up here as well. Pretty much all the same stuff. So, what we can go ahead and do with that now is press track.
And you can see the the track number there on the map has changed. It's now 35E1.
E for ESM, ESM1 track.
And if we go back to the TMA station, we can see we also got E1 in here as well as the A1. All right, so there you have it. With the ESM mast there, you can see AIS tracks and ESM tracks uh from radar and AIS emissions and send them to TMA and start start building solutions on these tracks. So, I hope this video was helpful and I'll see you guys in the next
