Successful TV revivals, such as Malcolm in the Middle and Scrubs, maintain the original format, cast chemistry, and creative style rather than modernizing the content, which creates authentic nostalgia and preserves the essence that made the original show successful.

Off campus, Revivals & The Odyssey for Dummies.Added:
Hello and welcome to the Fangirl Nation podcast. I am Leah Briers and I'm Amber Lee.
>> Amber, what are we talking about this week?
>> It's a big week. We're going to be talking about off-campus, the huge new sports romance that's coming out and just sports romances in general, and the many YA shows that are coming out this summer, revival, Malcolm in the Middle, Scrubs, L. Can you call that a revival?
And a little bit about the Odyssey trailer. Let's dive in.
>> Go on. You've been reading off campus, so you tell me about it.
>> I'm 90% of the way through. I've just started it because I was like, I need to read this before it comes out because I want to know what's the hype because people are going crazy over this show.
It comes out tomorrow on Wednesday. All episodes are dropping at once as well, which I think is crazy cuz why not tease them? To be fair, I think Prime's actually got so much coming out, they just like lure them in, you know? So, it's a hockey romance by a writer called L. Kennedy, but she's very keen to let people know. And just the showrunners like we started this before heated rivalry. Is it ice hockey?
>> Yeah. Okay, got you. What's that about?
So anyway, off campus, I started reading it. It's about girl called Hannah and a guy called Garrett who's on the ice hockey team and they kind of start fake dating because she fancies someone else and they're like and he's like if you fake date me will make him jealous and make him interested in you.
>> Classic Wad. I love it.
>> But you know what the vibes I wasn't expecting to like it cuz some some kind of trashy romances I don't like but this isn't that. I was actually it actually reminded me of being back at uni with like the casualness of relationships and like self exploration and something about this book you'd like it because felt like I was reading a TV show like when I was reading it I could picture everything so vividly like I was making a mind movie I can't like something about the way it was written.
>> Oo okay you were creative juices flowing.
>> Yeah. Honestly I think it's like very simply written but in a good way.
>> Sometimes when things are easily written I'm like this isn't good writ but this is good. nice and clear for the audience, the reader, >> and also it was semi-predictable, but still not. And it's loved every second.
It had like some obvious tropes, sharing a bed, you know, fake dating. So, this book is actually called The Deal. Off Campus is the name of the series. It's a five book series. So, obviously, Prime Video have called this off campus because they're going to do the rest.
So, this is book one, The Deal. And yeah, I'm I'm loving it.
>> And that's coming out tomorrow.
>> Coming out tomorrow. All episodes dropping at once, which Yeah, I saw people people are going crazy over this show. It's huge.
>> That might be my weekend watching. I think >> I think you'll love it.
>> Yeah, it'd be interesting because now you've made this like mind movie or mind TV series to see how it compares.
>> I know. I'm so happy that I read it.
>> Have they dropped the trailer?
>> Yes.
>> Does it look the way you were expecting it to look?
>> I haven't watched it yet. Do you know why? Because I knew I wanted to read the book and you know how we were saying that we don't like watching trailers because I wanted to go in blind and so I did. Now I think I'm going to watch it after this and be so excited. I highly recommend reading a book less than a week before the on-screen adaptation comes out cuz now it's all I can think about. I'm hooked. And what do you Oh, we just have to wait till Wednesday.
Simple. Like that's the best thing ever.
Do you know what I think?
>> That's great news.
>> Just get all the content all at once.
>> Yeah.
>> Stunning.
>> Just a just just my week of off campus.
>> Your little off-c campus bubble taking you back to uni.
>> But speaking of sports romances, you loved Heated Rivalry, didn't you?
>> Yeah, I just loved it. I just I love I just thought it was lovely. It was funny. It was nice seeing new actors as well. Not that they're like new, they >> off campus is new actors as well which is nice.
>> It's nice because you can just plop them in and you don't have any like pre >> preconceptions like with you know Sydney Sweeney or >> Exactly. of who they are. So that was really exciting and I just it was just nice seeing a different story. I thought I'd learn a bit more about ice hockey. I still know nothing about >> No. Same in off campus the book. It's not really >> don't even know how it works. Don't know how many you need to get to win. Ice hockey the new like you know in teen drama like old school high school shows >> lacrosse.
>> Lacrosse or just like the football team?
>> Yeah. Yeah. I think ice hockey is >> the new the new frontier. Why? What is it?
>> I guess it's like cuz it's a bit like rugged. It's in my head it's like Canadian rugby. Did you hear about the thing on book talk though where book talk actually got really obsessed with a real life ice hockey team because they were like they they're all really good-looking and they fit the bill of like what we imagine >> the characters in this book to look like to the point where they were going to games and like holding up signs and like some really sexual and appropriate signs >> and like at first the team was leaning into it and were like doing things on TikTok because they were like free promo like what was going on >> and then it started to get inappropriate to the point where one of the main guys they were obsessing over. He's like married with kids. Had like put up this thing being like I'm feeling like sexualized and like harassed. This isn't okay. You can't be coming to my games and like screaming all this stuff like I'm a real person. I'm not a character in your book kind of vibes.
>> And then book talk I think had to check themselves.
>> Yeah. You know, a reality check on that one.
>> Yeah. Obsess over the characters in your books but not a real life hockey team.
>> That's got really nothing to do with it.
>> No. Isn't that weird?
Sometimes we just need to bring ourselves back to reality, ground ourself, you know, hug a tree maybe. But speaking of sports romances, have you heard of Prime Video's obsession campaign?
>> I've just recently seen stuff, but tell me more.
>> Okay, so for people who don't know, Prime Video really said we are the place for teen drama, I think, off the back of the summer term pretty. And they were like, hang on a second. This was huge for us. Clearly, this is a huge audience. the YA adaptations, just YA drama. And I feel like we've kind of said before that they should bring back shows like that, like Gossip Girl, the OC. I think they're positioning. Was it like the CW who did like Gossip Girl and the OC and stuff?
>> Yeah. Yeah. But I think >> now that everything's on streaming, Prime Video, like no, we are the streaming platform for all your big teen dramas. And they did this campaign called Obsession is in session. And in a press release, they said it is a new storytelling initiative celebrating young adult storytelling and fandom culture, which I actually love that because I feel like something we've spoken about is like fan girls, people not taking it seriously or like yeah, girly interests and things and Prime Video like no, we love that, respect that. We're going to include the fans in it with this whole obsession. It feels like it's for the fans >> which is really really nice. Like you said, like I think fan girls are overlooked. Yeah. And really like we're going to give the people what they want. We're going to give the girlies what they want. We're going to lean into it. And so they dropped this crazy teaser trailer of all these different things coming out. So we've got Off Campus coming out tomorrow. Your Fault London second series every year after which I'm very excited about. I've spoken about this one before. Featuring my doppelganger for Fortune adaptation.
Oh, I'm so excited for that. Comes out June 10th. Love Hypothesis with Lily Reinhardt.
>> Oh, okay.
>> Yeah. the Ali Hazerwood adaptation. We don't know when that's coming out, but there was a little teaser. Sterling Point coming out in August. Clashing Through the Snow, that's actually a Christmas film. Drawn Together, The Last Sunrise, The Devil's Mouth, Maxton Hall series 3, I believe, and then L coming out like July 1. So, they really said, "Hey, every month, >> bloody hell, >> you're going to have something." And they're all YA. A lot of them are book adaptations that already have such a strong fan base.
>> I think it's a really smart move from Prime. Like they're really positioning themselves because I didn't really know what Prime's niche is and now they've got one.
>> No, I love it actually.
>> I did always used to wonder >> what their plan was, what their creative strategy is.
>> And they came out and said, "We've we've had this planned. We have works."
>> Boom.
>> Yeah.
>> For the girls, girls.
>> Busy busy summer. You're excited for L.
>> Yeah.
>> Well, you love Legally Blonde. I love everything to do with Legally Blonde, the films, the musical. I just think it's fantastic.
>> It feels like a warm hug. I always like feel inspired to like really go get them when I watch anything Legally Blonde.
>> But yeah, so L is coming out and that is a prequel to what we know about Legally Blonde so far. It's set in high school the year before she goes to university for the first time. You know, Legally Blonde picks up before she goes to law school after she like a fashion degree.
So this is just before then. And it's really interesting because it's almost a revival because we're bringing the same story back like 20 years 25 years later, but we're telling >> Is it a revival or a prequel?
>> Well, it's a it's a prequel. It's a prequel, but we've got Reese Witherspoon is the exact producer.
>> Yes, she's very involved.
>> Very involved. It's a character that is very close to her heart and she's never like shied away from Lords, which I love. And again, it's a new talent. They did an open casting.
>> I love that. And Reese Witherspoon was the one who was choosing.
>> She looks so much like her. So much like her.
>> Also, I loved like when they announced her, I went on her Instagram just seeing she's like a normal girl and then suddenly gets cast in this. I just remember thinking, "Wow, I remember I wonder what all her like home hometown friends think."
>> Exactly. That was so cool.
>> Obviously, LS is so iconic. So, being able to portray her must be insane. And that comes out July 1st, 2026.
>> Yes.
>> July 1st this year.
>> Is that all episodes at once?
>> Surely not.
>> I have no idea. But it's already renewed for season two. They started filming season two.
>> Wow.
>> So hopefully that means it's good.
>> Yeah.
>> And it's really interesting also because it's inspired. So Reese Witherspoon was like the brainchild of well decided on this because she watched Wednesday on Netflix and she was like we can do this for L.
>> Yeah.
>> Iconic.
>> I love that it's produced by her production company, isn't it? Like they made it.
>> Yeah.
>> Slay. Who made the first legally blogs?
How did she get that?
>> I've to be fair.
>> I think she is so smart. That little production business. she's got where she has her book club.
>> She makes it a book club pick, makes it a huge book, buys the rights to the book to make it into a movie before they've announced that it's a book club pick and before anyone else can.
>> Exactly.
>> And then makes the movie.
>> She's iconic. I love her.
>> She made some bangers. Big Little Lies, Little Fires Everywhere, Where the Crawads Sing.
>> She's killing it.
>> But like talking about like bringing old stories that have a fan base back, we've been watching a few revivals recently.
>> Revival done right, I think.
>> Very much so. Malcolm Middle and Scrub.
What is most exciting about these revivals, I think, is that they brought back pretty much all of the OG cast, like Scrubs, the full lineup. Malcolm in the Middle, the fact that Brian Cranston is in this because when he did Malcolm in the Middle, obviously in a different place in his career pre-doing Breaking Bad, >> I just love that he was up doing this because he does some silly things, which is what he did in the first round.
>> It's so nice after seeing him in Breaking Bad and seeing him in quite serious.
>> Yeah, he's one of like the best actors.
of all time.
>> And seeing him go back to like being goofy and like setting his bum on fire and like running around screaming, it really warmed my >> I love that for him. I love that he was up for it. I bet he was so excited as well.
>> Yeah. Well, it's just it's nice seeing like the majority of the cast back and it must be like they spent so long ran for six years. Yeah.
>> So that's like a lot of time together like a little family.
>> The only person they didn't get back was >> but the recast of >> pretty good. They just got some man with big ears.
>> But I I'm not like for a second. I was like, >> "No, I didn't notice until >> You looked it up."
>> Yeah. And I was like, "Oh, it's someone."
>> But apparently, so he's at Harvard right now like studying and apparent they said they offered him buckets of money and he just said, "Nah." The OG Jew actor.
>> Well, he's he's given up acting. That's what I mean. He doesn't want to do it.
He doesn't want to act at all anymore.
>> But quite a few of them have given up acting. The main guy, Malcolm, what's his real name?
>> Frankie Munz.
>> Frankie Munz, he came back to acting for this. He quit acting, became a race car driver.
>> Yeah.
>> Loads of concussions.
>> He delivered a great performance.
>> Picked it up. Oh my god.
>> But he also like gave up acting in the most iconic way. He's like, I've retired at 20 >> slay slay.
>> Imagine retiring from acting 29. So jealous.
>> Most of them are back. It's nice to see.
>> I think why it works is you feel like you are watching the OG show. It doesn't feel to me like they've tried to update it or like the format. The cameras are better, but the way it's filmed and like the music and like Malcolm talking to camera, it's oh, let's just do exactly what worked the first time around. Not like because that kind of style of show doesn't really exist anymore.
>> No, like that sitcom.
>> Exactly. That feel. So, it actually felt kind of jarring to watch at first cuz I was like, wait, we don't watch shows like this anymore. But that's why I like there's only four episodes. I've only watched episode one.
>> Okay. I've watched all four. They're only 30 minutes.
>> No. Yeah, but I was like we should talk about Malcol in the middle and the scripts I think on Monday.
>> Yeah.
>> And you watch them all.
>> I take it serious, Amber. I'm >> research. Research.
>> Um I I thought the girl that played Leah was really good.
>> Yeah. Also that her name was Leah was fun. Um >> I thought she was really good. I thought she really looked like she played it like a mini Malcolm. It was really I like uncanny.
>> I do feel there was maybe too much of external characters. I feel like when you're doing revival, especially if it's only four episodes, >> I just want to see the people I know and love a bit more, but I feel they're setting it up for like a spin-off, >> there was a lot of L.
>> I think they were like, let's just do four episodes, see how it does. You can only afford Boring Crown for like four episodes, you know, and then >> it had 8 million global views on its first week. People really >> people were excited for this revival.
>> It's again, it's because you're like, okay, they're you're hearing they're doing a Malcolm in the Middle revival.
What do you mean? It's basically all of the OG casts.
>> Yeah, >> that's incredible. Also, I love whoever's decision that was. It's on Disney Plus. We love Disney Plus.
>> We love Disney Plus.
>> Bangers. The fact that they've released two revivals at the same time. Scrubs as well.
>> I think Scrubs is a perfect revival.
>> Over Malcolm in the Middle, I will say, for me, >> which is interesting because when I was younger, I preferred Malcolm in the Middle to Scrubs.
>> Yeah.
>> But there was something that happened when I was playing the first episode of Scrubs.
And then the theme tune came on. It was like >> I can do this all on my own. No, I know.
I know Superman. I It was like a Sorry, we're not done.
>> I was I was a sleeper agent that like awoke me.
>> Yeah.
>> I was like >> It took me back to I used to come home from school.
>> Yes. It was on at like 4:00.
There were like two episodes.
>> I felt really grown up watching Scrubs as well.
>> It was like my background after school show. I come home, make a little snack, still be in my school uniform, maybe do my homework at the same time.
>> Yeah. And like generally it was like I was like transported and then I and like cuz I was doing something when I was watching the first episode and I just sat down in front of my TV.
Like I was a child.
>> It's like that, you know, that meme.
It's like just put on something while I clean the house and you're just there vacuuming.
>> Exactly. And the vacuum isn't even touching the floor.
>> Yeah.
>> That was me. I was just sat down in front of my TV and I was like, "Oh, this is this is where I will be for the next hour."
>> I just thought it was so perfect.
>> And the same way Malcolm Middle, they kept the same format. Scrubs as well.
They haven't tried to change the format or anything like still filmed in the same way. I think it was filmed really beautifully. It was a bit grainy. No Netflix lighting. I I don't know.
>> No, they've just got updated cameras.
Like it's just nice, but they filmed it in the same style >> style as the OG. I love that.
>> Also, so the original was filmed in like an abandoned hospital. not just a disused hospital.
>> Whereas this one, what they've done is they've made a two scale set of this hospital in a warehouse, >> right?
>> So, so they can like use the cameras in a better way because they were just in this building that already existed and already had everything. They were really struggling to like get the cameras through and move the cameras and so now they've just made a two scale set in a warehouse that is like camera friendly so they can do more exciting things.
they could really get in on people.
Thought it was really interesting and like apparently all the cast came back and was like this is so trippy because it's completely to scale except for like a few corridors are like optical illusions. Do you know what that's like with a lot of famous shows that started like they do the pilot episode or something in the real location like Modern Family.
>> Yeah.
>> And then they built a set replica. Glee the choir room was in a real high school and then they built a set to look identical because like some people go to that school and they're like he in the glee choir room.
>> I just think that's so impressive like >> set and set design is just so impressive.
>> Yeah. Also with scrubs there wasn't even a moment of thinking these are just actors like they were immediately back in their characters. immediately back.
The rapport was still there. The relationship, the chemistry, everything was just, >> oh, it was just so perfect.
>> Yeah, it really felt like I was just dropped into what they're doing now.
>> I was so happy watching this scrubs revival. It was like a warm hugely like I was just sat there like grinning. It's just exactly the same. It's the same jokes, but in That's what I like. It's the same sense of humor, the same style of comedy that it used to be.
>> Exactly. I saw a review on the variety that was really slagging it off and just being like, "Oh, it's Millennial Cringe." And comparing it to The Pit, but it's very different. Like, I don't think it's really a comparison.
>> No, just cuz they're both set in a hospital.
>> Exactly. And they were like saying like it was like unoffensive, but it wasn't doing anything and it was really cringy.
And I was like, the pit's a drama.
>> Yeah.
>> A really accurate medical drama. And Scrubs is a comedy set in a hospital.
Although back in the day it was viewed as one of the most accurate medical shows by the American Medical Association >> um for like the original series.
>> Obviously the pit has taken that mantle but I think they've still got like you know doctors on set and >> Yeah. We're fans of the pit and we're fans of scrubs.
>> Exactly. I don't think it was a comparison like that should be made.
Like it's just I think there is a thing at the moment where everything has to be >> so serious and it has to mean something.
It has to sometimes you can just watch something for fun.
>> Absolutely. And I think we forget that like sometimes things can just be fun.
They don't have to be this like critically acclaimed even though you know Scrubs won its Emmys and its things back in the day. I think it could just be a nice fun watch.
>> Interesting you say that about reviews because I read a review for Malcolm in the Middle and they were like this is a revival done right. Not like Scrubs, >> but then I've read really good reviews for Scrubs that >> Yeah.
>> almost say the opposite. Why are we comparing the two? Just cuz they're revival.
>> Yeah. Yeah, I think it's just they've come out at similar times and there shows from like a similar era. Hey, but um if we are comparing the two, >> you said Scrubs. Scrubs has trumped it.
But maybe it's because I was actually really disappointed with Malcolm in the Middle because they don't have the same theme song. They just have the end of it >> cuz it's quite a long theme song.
>> But I loved it.
>> You're another bus for me now. Cuz I used to sing that when it was >> when I was a teen and I was filled with angst and like hating my parents for no good reason other than the fact that I was a teenager. I made that my ringtone only from my mom. So it would ring and be like, "You're another boss of me now.
You're another boss of me now. The hell was wrong with me?
>> You're a witch."
>> But yeah, I think I was just a bit disappointed they didn't play that.
Maybe I'm just a music girl.
>> They just life is unfair. Well, that's cuz this one is called Mal in the middle. Life is unfair. Life is still unfair. But anyway, that that would be my only complaint. But I enjoyed both. I thought they were lovely. Scrubs has been renewed for a season two or a season 11.
>> How many episodes of Scrubs are worth?
>> I don't know. Next up, right, they're doing the revivals. So, they're bringing old formats back. Now, we want the 22 episode seasons back.
>> Oh, >> bring them back. Prime Video. If they came off the bat with their obsession in session and said, "Not only getting all these YA dramas, but you're getting full 22 episode seasons with seasonal Thanksgiving themed episodes, >> a Christmas episode.
>> Imagine. Imagine. Surely." Well, the revivals are back. Why? Why are the revivals are coming out? We've got the revival of Prison Break.
How much more? It's not the same cast, is it?
>> No. So then I'm like, is it a revival?
But they're calling it a revival.
>> That's a remake.
>> I would say a remake.
>> The Dexter revival that did really, really well. I didn't watch Dexter back in the day, but it's got 95% of Rotten Tomatoes.
>> That's got the same cast, I think, hasn't it?
>> Yeah, it has.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Also, well, a revival that was not meant to be, which got everyone excited.
>> Lizzie Maguire.
>> Oh, it wasn't that. Yeah. Also, [ __ ] Lizzie Maguire apparently just didn't pass the pilot.
>> But this is because they had creative differences, Hillary Duff and Disney, because I think she wanted it to have more mature adult themes.
>> Okay.
>> And she was like, well, I'm not going to make it if it's not telling a story that is accurate.
>> Yeah. With the audience.
>> Yeah.
>> But maybe that's difficult when it's a teen show. But that's shelved. I don't think that's ever going to come back.
Would love to see Hillary Duff coming back in another way, though.
>> Yeah. Well, she did your father.
>> Yes. But like now, right now she's like on tour.
>> Oh yeah. For her first show in Shepherd's Bush.
>> Yeah. Big up Bush.
>> What arrival are you going to say? So Buffy the Vampire Slayer >> was wigs for a revival. They had Sarah Michelle Gella back for it. She was going to be like a mentor to the new Slayer.
>> Um >> what a ridiculous sentence.
>> Buffy the Vampire Slayer has such a big passionate audience. Like I think everyone was so excited for this to come back.
>> Yeah.
>> And it was being directed by Khloe Xiao who did Hamn. Oh my god. And they filmed the pilot and again Hulu/ Disney didn't pick it up after the pilot so it was scrapped.
>> God, I'd love to see that pilot episode.
>> I was just think I now now learning about all these pilots that like >> never get made.
>> Well, they got the pilot got made but they never made past the pilot. I want to watch all these pilot episodes that never got picked up.
>> When I was a kid, I was like why are all these episodes called pilot? What does that mean? But yeah, like really disappointing for that. But there is this air of revival and bringing stories back and >> and continuing on and seeing where everyone is. So I guess our question is what would you want to see back >> if you could revive any show that you loved maybe 10 20 years ago? What would you bring back? What would you bring back?
>> Going off that like Malcolm in the Middle. Actually the middle. Do you watch The Middle >> with Brick?
>> Yeah. With Brick and >> that was I thought that was such a niche show. I was like, "Who else is watching this?" Axel.
>> Axel.
>> I love that show. If you could bring back the middle, I'll take a six part. I would love 24, though.
>> 24. Gossip Girl.
>> Yeah, they did. And it wasn't a good revival.
>> It's got to be done right. It was a whole new cast.
>> It's not a revival then.
>> No. And Gossip Girl was one of the teachers. And I think they did the thing sometimes shows have done which I think they've now come out the other side of of trying to make it too modern.
>> Yeah.
>> Like they tried to fit every kind of different quotota within this friendship group but you know where it feels forced like all kinds of sexualities all kind like it's just like >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Revival need to have a lot of love and care and we need to talk to the fans and we need to give the revival are fan service so you can't not serve the fans.
>> Yes. Exactly. Don't need to try and modernize it. But you know sometimes where they're so about phones and Tik Tok and it's like gh >> like Sex in the City >> kind of was a bit that just had a big revival just like that. Have you watched Sex in the City? The show.
>> It's brilliant.
>> I know. It's one of those ones that I only watched like maybe three years ago.
I was like time to see what all the fuss is about and I was flabbergasted. My my mind boggles at the fact that it was recorded at the same time as friends like coming out at the same time like two different >> types of New York in the 90s but Sex in City has got a lot of sex in it.
>> Very sensible child and I used to self censor myself and if it it had sex in the title so I wasn't watching that was above my age.
>> I think you should watch it and I would love to know what you think.
>> Okay.
>> Genuinely I'll put it as my homework.
>> Watch Girls Girls by Leah Dunham on HBO.
>> Oh my god. Leah, >> I know you love Lena Dunham though. No, but that's like a millennial Sex in the City. Okay.
>> Almost. Watch Sex in the City first and then Girls.
>> Okay. I'll put it in my homework diary.
>> Other revivals. If I could have the full cast.
>> Yeah.
>> In front of me.
>> Glee. Well, Glee is going to be hard.
>> Yeah. Fine. In a fairy tale. So, do you think instead of remakes, they should be doing revivals?
>> Yes.
>> If we're still within 20 to 30 years, it's a revival we want, not a remake.
Like a revival of Scrubs with the OG cast would have done 10 times better than just a remake now. No one cares.
Malid, if they just did a remake with some random kid and some random family, no revivals. So, do you think like for Harry Potter they should be? Nah. Also slightly different with Harry Potter because it's going from a film to a TV series >> book. But I think if within a 20 year 20 to 30 year gap actually it's a revival we want because you're serving the same audience. Love to see the trend of revivals over reunions. All these re remakes, revival, reunions. But >> I [ __ ] hate a reunion.
>> Well, we have been very vocal about that. Love that they did a revival of Malcolm just so imagine if they did a four episode revival of friends.
>> Oh, that would be amazing. They had the chance to do slaps.
>> They had the chance to do so, but then they brought back this silly silly reunion podcast interview set tour.
>> And now there's Matthew Perry. Rest in peace.
>> RIP Bing.
>> Yeah.
>> Well, they they they could have >> they could they could have done it.
>> They did Joey.
>> They just did two episodes of Hannah Montana.
>> I would have taken one a movie.
>> A movie.
>> Just a little movie.
>> Well, she did movies.
>> I would take a 30 minute special.
>> Yeah, fine. I [ __ ] would have taken anything.
>> Yeah.
>> So, I wouldn't even taken a full concert if she did. What do you think the process is where they're like reunion over revival of which lane they choose to go down?
>> Money, >> do you think?
>> Yeah. Well, revival was going to cost way more, >> but they could have made so much money.
>> It's a risk, isn't it?
>> Okay, enough about the re the revival remakes reunions. The Odyssey trailer came out last week.
>> This is big news for the classics community.
>> Big news for the classics community. I made a Tik Tok like finally my classics degree is useful. It got some real traction. There's a lot of us out there.
Who would have thought gripping to this like, "Oh my god, finally something."
Anyway, the Odyssey trailer came out. A lot of people are annoyed about the American accents, which I actually did a few episodes ago.
>> But then I saw someone saying, "Oh, they should just do like general European."
And I was like, "What the [ __ ] does that mean? What does general European mean?"
>> Well, the thing is, I think in previous Roman Grecian kind of stuff, the gladiator, all the big, >> it's always an English accent.
>> English accent.
>> That's I think is the accepted universal >> the right continent. Yeah.
>> Yeah. But do you know what it is? Is because there's so many British actors in this.
>> It's a British director. Most of the casts are British.
>> And so for us when we're seeing Tom Holland putting on a American accent, >> I'm just noticing Tom Holland putting on an American accent. Same way with Robert Patterson. And like cuz we were just saying we want more Robert Patterson with his normal voice.
>> It's a sexy voice.
>> Yeah. It's a weird choice.
>> Interesting creative choice.
>> Universal American is their is their big big blockbuster of the year. So maybe that's that's it really done.
>> What you think? So they just thought go America.
>> I do.
>> What is why the decision? A decision >> and I want to understand the reasons.
Maybe they were like let's go different because all the other previous classical adaptations have all been with a British accent. Let's differentiate ourselves.
Maybe also it's because Matt Damon's the lead and they were like we want Matt Damon at his best unencumbered.
>> Yeah. I don't know what Matt Damon's British accent's like.
>> Yeah. Maybe he couldn't do it and they were like >> everyone American.
>> Zenaia wasn't in the trailer. No. And neither was Leita. I think there's got to be a confusing movie. You know, sometimes Christopher Nolan movies are.
And he's already said because he went on one of the Jimmies, Kimmel Fallon, whatever. And he was like, maybe it wasn't even a Jimmy, one of those late night shows to do an interview when the trailer came out. And he was like, you know, the book isn't in chronological order. Story takes place all over the show.
>> Oh no.
>> Yeah. And you know what he's going to do with that? But he lapsed that up.
>> I'm going to be so confused.
I am easily confused.
>> Confused enough as it is.
>> It does look epic though.
>> And it Well, it's it is an epic.
>> Yeah. So, I was at the cinema this week and they played the trailer too loud.
First of all, >> what is it with cinemas at the moment and playing trailers too loud? Like, it actually hurt my ear.
>> The drama by ourselves. We're like, do you think we can ask them to turn it down? It's just us.
>> Like, first of all, it was it was too loud. However, it the trailer did look unreal on the big screen. What I liked about the trailer is it doesn't give anything away.
>> Not that there's a story to be spoiled like what does this tell me? It's like it doesn't have to tell you anything >> which we do love about a trailer.
>> Yeah.
>> Just give me general vibes.
>> Unless I've already read the book like summarizing the reaping obviously gives everything away fine because we know >> I think if you haven't read the books I don't think you understand a lot of the trailer >> potentially.
>> But with the Odyssey again as someone who I've not I've not read the Odyssey.
I have no idea what it's about. But you know a lot of the people in it like the Cyclops.
>> Yes.
>> Yeah. That's a big character that you'll know >> from Greek myths. He is in it and the whole thing like no name. My name is I'm no one. No, you'd know. Okay. It's a big Greek myth. Obviously, Athena. But again, I just from the trailer, I still didn't understand where that was going.
But I got the vibe of it and I was like, cool. It's going to be epic. It's going to be Listen, here's what you need to know. Matt Damon went to go fight in the war. He's been gone for 20 years. The war ended 10 years ago. He's trying to find his way back home. Tom Holland is holding down the fort back home. and Haway, his mom, Nelly, she's there ruling on her own, but Robert Patterson and all these other suitors are trying to win her affection. And Robert Patterson to Tom Holland is like, "Hey, I want your mommy. Daddy's gone. Where's your daddy?
>> Why are you pinging over?" That's what he says in the trailer. He's like, >> "Amber, I think what they need to do before they play the film is have you >> at the beginning."
>> Okay. That's basically what it is.
>> Okay. Okay.
>> And Haway, Tom Holland are trying to hold down the fort till daddy comes home. Lots of men are trying to move in on Anne Hathaway. Robert Patterson being the biggest one.
>> And Cyclops.
>> Where's Matt Damon? You know, that's that's the vibe.
>> He's still the protagonist though.
>> Yeah. But in a separate world, like all of his stories are separate to >> So every time we go see Matt Damon, he'll be doing different stuff.
>> Yeah. And he's often doing these big adventures >> doing in an American accent.
>> Yeah. But I think it looks great. I'm so excited. I'm so happy that it's Christopher Nolan.
>> If you want epic, >> the master of epic, >> he's the one. and tying all these worlds together, like all the different narratives and well potentially.
>> Oh, yeah. Well, excited for it to come out >> July. See you in July. I'm well excited.
>> Yeah, this is >> you know how you said to scrub the work something in you. That work something in me. A little classicist in me.
>> No, honestly.
>> No, I love it for you.
>> Yeah, >> you're fangirling over the Odyssey.
>> Yeah, I am actually. What else are you fangirling over this week?
>> Off campus. Now that I've almost done with the book show's coming out. What a time to be alive. No, like when I say it was perfect timing.
>> Yeah, >> I'm going to do that more often like wait until the last minute to read a book before the show comes out.
>> You're a very quick reader though. You >> Yeah, but it's then cuz like you know when you're reading something or you're just raped like that's my whole world.
>> Yeah.
>> What about you, Leah?
>> I am fangirling over train spotting enthusiasts.
>> Francis.
>> Yeah. Well, my local station is a train spotting like place. And on the way here, I was just watching their I saw them with their binoculars. And I just went, I love this for you guys. I really do. And it was just so wholesome and sweet. And they were just all at the end of the platform and they were like talking to each other. And then this guy, I was waiting for my train. So this guy came who like he was a bit late and he was rushing. They were like, "Don't worry, you haven't missed it. It's delayed." And it was just it was just so cute. And I loved it for them. And as a train enthusiast myself, I wouldn't say I'm a big train spotter, but enthusiast, I >> I stayed and watched with them. I watched the freight train go through and I went, "Woohoo!"
>> You stay and watch or you just waiting for your train.
>> I went down into the bit where you could see it.
>> Wow.
>> And then got on my normal train.
>> You should go to the London Transport Museum. Actually, you've been, haven't you?
>> Yeah, of course.
>> There was a time.
>> Yeah, that's what I'm failing over.
People loving trains. And that's it from us this week. I think >> guys, we've got a new setup. Um, so let us know what you think. Oh. Guys, if you are enjoying the podcast and you're a regular listener and you don't follow us already on Spotify, please do it. Really helps.
