This video demonstrates the restoration process of a 1914 4HP International Famous Hit-Miss gas engine, showcasing key mechanical troubleshooting and repair techniques including head gasket replacement, cylinder head machining on a lathe, piston sleeving with new rings, ignition system maintenance, and proper timing setup (10-15° before top dead center) to achieve successful engine operation after 50 years of inactivity.

4HP IHC Famous Hit Miss Engine, AntiqueAñadido:
Well, hi there. Welcome back. Just Derek today and today we are going to work on a 4 horsepower famous international famous.
And this is a tank cooled. So it doesn't have a hopper on it. It's cooled by by a pump and go through a tray cool and cools the engine that way.
Um, this engine is made in the mid teens, I believe, 1934 14. So, she she's old, too. PreWorld War I.
But, um, I never I did not paint this.
This is the way it was painted. Oh, I'm going to say about 30 years ago now. So, I saw this engine about 25 years ago, and we're finally gonna try to get this thing started.
Um, I did try to start it, but it only lasted for about 30 seconds and then it died.
What the heck going on? Well, you can see I blew a head gasket. It burnt. You can see, right?
right there burnt out. And okay, that wasn't the first time. This was the the first time it burnt right here.
And then I wasn't sure just in case it was a bad gasket that um so I made another one, put it on, and it lasted for about a minute. And then it died, no compression again. So that was kind of crappy. But this time I uh cut cut the head. I refaced it. It was off a little bit cuz you can see this has cracked here and it's being braced.
But the brace job's good. I'm not worried about that. So, and it was very low right here. It was about 8 thou under. So, I had to take about 8 thou off of this. Took a while to dial it up, but I did it on the lathe. So, so now I should have no more problems.
Yeah.
And just in case you guys haven't seen, I made uh well, I didn't do no videos of sleeing the I mean um boring the cylinder out. I did that on my own. Um, but I did make a video of sleeving the piston cuz when I bored the cylinder out time I got it true back to being a perfect circle. Uh, I can't remember but I took quite a bit off the I cut the piston down and then you this is the old piston here and this is the new piston here. So I sleeved the piston, loctited it and put couple grub screws locked in and got new ring put in it. Three new rings.
Um I've also taken the mag all apart, gone through it all, put new light into the the ground here. Throws nice hot spark for the first one I started. I'm just going to go off a battery and coil. Um once I get kind of dialed in, then I'll switch it over to the mag because um just easier for me.
Um yeah. So hopefully this is going to be a real first run. I've only had it, like I said, run for 30 seconds or a minute and then that was it. So, and I do have the uh pump for it. Pump right there. And there's the muffler.
And I do have a the the cooling tank for it.
And this is probably one of my top five engines.
This is getting up there. One of my favorites. So, so I believe in this video we are going to make it run and it's going to stay running.
So, and hopefully you guys stick around to enjoy the show hopefully.
Like I said, I I never painted this. Uh I still got some stuff I want to go through once I get it running and dialed in. Uh some stuff I want to change. But but I guess uh you can watch me struggle putting the head on and see bring the guy back to life and stay alive this time.
Heat.
Heat.
All right. I apologize. I didn't have the uh I lost the carb gasket. So, I had to go make another one. So, all I did was just put two bolts in, made my carb gasket. It's all good now. So, and like I said, I got the timing set kind of I call wooy so it doesn't kick back on me.
I just to break it in. Want everything kind of easy as possible. So, it's almost firing at top dead center. Once I get everything seated in and everything, then I'll start setting the timing, 10, 15° before top dead center. And then I I still got a bunch of stuff to go through. Like I said before, I got to go put uh the ramp on here on the cam loop that uh make it where it's less compression when you start it.
There's a little lever here. Switch it back and forth. But that one's missing.
But I have one to copy from right there.
Then I got the fuel pump right there.
And and then that that'll be the next video.
We we'll rig up the fuel pump and everything. But this video is just going to basically get it running for and hopefully I got all my uh problems out.
So, but everything's been going pretty good so far. So, I think maybe even we'll put the muffler on. I haven't seen the muffler on this. So, um that's right there. I know I have a gasket for it. I saw it somewhere.
But, um I'll go get some stuff set up and see if we can fire this guy up.
Hopefully. Keep your fingers crossed.
There we are. I got Christopher. He helped me turn it over.
And now she's running.
Now, as long as we last 30 seconds, I won't blow a head gasket.
thing doesn't fire that much.
>> No, I got it set kind of slow. Uh, it it's lazy.
I didn't want a fast running engine.
I want it kind of lazy. So, I'm going to see if I can get it slower than this.
I guess I wasn't putting enough fuel in that stuff.
>> Yeah, that's it. We fixed the problem. I would have blown a head gasket already.
>> Oh.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> You blowing a couple.
>> You blowing a couple with this.
>> Oh, yeah.
This is the last one. It burnt. It burnt right there.
It burnt right there.
Cuz that time when you guys tried to start it for me, it had compression, but it was blowing out um through the water cooling. That's where you guys were hearing it. So now it's alive. It's actually the first time it's ran in for I say 50 years easily. And there's another head gasket that pulled out. Oh yeah, I was getting very frustrated.
Oh, it'll just run like this forever.
Yeah, I I got a a lubricator for it someday.
Run that oil. Yeah.
Yeah.
And we're also breaking in the new cylinder uh rings. That's a brand new cylinder. Everything that there's a quarter right there.
Oh, well, hope you guys enjoyed this video.
