To survive hitting a tree 20 times per second, it uses a specialized hyoid apparatus, an extremely elongated, flexible bone and muscle structure that anchors, extends, and supports the bird's unusually long tongue. It's wrapping backward around the skull. It acts as a tension spring that stabilizes and keeps the brain from rattling like a spray paint can. But the engineering gets deeper. The beak is asymmetric. The lower half is longer and harder, creating an uneven strike that diverts vibration waves under the brain case and straight into the neck. Add a spongy frontal bone and a third eyelid that locks the eyeballs in place and you have a system that is effectively concussion-proof.
