To survive hitting a tree 20 times per second, it uses a specialized hyoid apparatus, an extremely elongated, flexible bone and muscle structure that anchors, extends, and supports the bird's unusually long tongue. It's wrapping backward around the skull. It acts as a tension spring that stabilizes and keeps the brain from rattling like a spray paint can. But the engineering gets deeper. The beak is asymmetric.
