Windy enough to blow the milk out of your tea today... what about tomorrow and that warm air!Added:
It certainly has been sunny today, but man, has it been breezy. How breezy has it been?
Enough to blow the milk right out of your tea, as they say.
Now, I'll tell you when the wind is going to slack off. Hint, it may not be until Thursday for some of us and the warmth on the way after we learn a bit about this evening's sponsor, Amplifon.

As of just after 3:30 on our Tuesday, May 5th, 2026, we can see the winds haven't been super strong today, but some areas have seen gusts encroaching on 80 km/h like in St. Anthony and in the Great Cove area. Now, it's not remarkably windy, but it's enough that you notice it and you can hear it when you're inside almost any building. And you may wonder, why has it been so windy? Well, it's all about those highs and lows and when they're in close proximity to one another, you have this pressure gradient force that narrows and that narrowing increases the wind speed between the high and the low. And we have a very textbook setup of that today. And as we look at the high and low pressures near Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canada, we've got one over Labrador and two areas of high pressure to the southeast of Newfoundland. And what's between them?
Right where I was talking about, Newfoundland. And right in the middle is where the wind speeds are generally the highest and that's where they have been accelerating through today, that kind of narrow corridor. Think of like a river.
I've used this analogy before, right?
Where river is wide, it flows nice and slowly. When it narrows, it's got to speed up and that's what we're seeing today. Now, there is a silver lining with this in that the narrowing of the wind speed and the position of the high is going to send in some warmer air. We look back to the southwest, it's 25° in Boston, 25° in Bathurst, New Brunswick right now, Halifax sitting at 19°. So, there is warmer air to our southwest. That warmer air is going to get pushed toward the northeast and that will set us up for a very warm, breezy and sunny day across most of Newfoundland on Wednesday with a lot of us floating with 20°. Meanwhile, in Labrador, looks like it's going to be a little bit cooler both Wednesday and Thursday and more unsettled. And the weather will get progressively more unsettled across the island as we go through later Wednesday, Thursday and especially on Friday. Now, we take a look at the forecast for tonight across Newfoundland, temperatures between 5 and 8° or so for the overnight lows and the wind speeds are not really going to drop off much. Tomorrow, another very breezy day. Southwesterlies gusting 60 to 70 in some areas once more. Going to be coolest in the south, maybe a little bit of fog in the south as well like along the south coast, but areas northeast and north 19° in Gander tomorrow, 18 Lampton, 17 Bonavista, 18 in St. John's.
If it wasn't going to be as windy as it is, I'd be more confident of more areas getting to 20. Now, we may very well see 20 tomorrow in parts of the metro. Heck, St. John's might even get to 20 tomorrow, but right now, 18° and windy is kind of along the lines that I'm thinking, but I wouldn't be surprised if it gets warmer than that. A thing of note, tomorrow's going to be warm, it's going to be dry and it's going to be breezy, okay? Those are the three ingredients we need for the uncontrolled spreading of any fire that's not very, very well contained. Tomorrow is not a good day to do any type of burning and I know in the comments we might get, well, we had so much snow and we've had so much rain. That's right. We can still get fires to spread, especially when it's been dry for a few days and the ground is dry and the trees aren't out yet. There's all sorts of reasons why wildfires can spread and tomorrow is a very um ideal day for the uncontrolled spreading of fire if one does get started. And the government put out a Facebook post earlier, they responded to over 20 wildfires, mainly on grass, already so far this season. So, don't make it 21, but I know someone probably will and I hope you don't. So, common sense. We look at the forecast for Thursday, not quite as warm. Some showers arriving on the west coast and southwest coast late in the day and that will translate to more rain across much of Newfoundland to come Friday. Into Labrador, looking at some showers overnight, maybe a few flurries as well.
For the day tomorrow, highs warmer by and large, 7 to 15° for highs, not a whole lot in the way of sunshine and then looking ahead to Thursday, looks like more widespread rain for Churchill Falls and Goose Bay up towards Hopedale and more cloudy in the east and southeast where the winds are going to be more onshore and there could be some localized drizzle and fog, especially around the straits. Why is that going to happen? Well, we're going to see the weather pattern getting a little more unsettled. So, we see some showers pushing through Labrador overnight and as we go through the early morning hours on Wednesday, Wednesday on the island, a few areas of showers and fog may likely be found along the south coast. So, we're going to watch that area. Otherwise, a little more cloud cover than today, but by the afternoon, it should be quite sunny, especially for about the eastern half of Newfoundland. Meanwhile, in Labrador, along the coast, we're looking at the sunny skies tomorrow. However, we're going to watch the rain begin to roll into southeastern areas of the big land come Thursday morning and that rain will begin to migrate to the east later Thursday and Thursday night, but arriving on the southwest and west coast by Thursday afternoon or evening and that will begin to exit interior Labrador Thursday night, moving toward the southeast.
And then, the rain arrives on the island for Friday and Friday right now looks like it's going to be a rainy and breezy day once more.
Hopefully, not as windy as the last couple of days. Does not look like a potent system coming through or a really strong storm, but something to watch is that Friday is going to be rainy. The good news is that it looks like once we get through Friday, the weekend looks pretty nice. I'll be a cooler than tomorrow, 12° Saturday, 11 on Sunday with a mix of sun and cloud. I know my kids will be ecstatic, they can get outside and run around, get the energy out, maybe actually sleep well for once or go to bed at a decent hour for once.
You know, the real parents, get them outside, get the energy out. As we go into central western Newfoundland, very much the same thing, a little bit of rain on Friday and maybe some rain mixed with some flurries Saturday on the northern peninsula. Into Labrador, we're looking at temperatures cooling down a bit for the weekend in the south and maybe some rain and snow showers, but that really is about it on the north coast. The weekend looks okay, same thing for Goose Bay and Churchill Falls, but before the weekend, we're looking at cloudy skies with just a few showers here and there.
Nothing significant rolling in until, again, looks like Thursday for some areas of the big land.
