Oz: More wet weather chances as low pressure dominates the southern half of AustraliaAdded:
Hello, Cord. Good day. It's Wednesday, the 27th of May. Thank you for joining me as we take a look at Australia's weather forecast through until Tuesday of next week. And we've got plenty of wet weather around parts of Australia today around Queensland and on the coast, also inland. Thunderstorms developing as they track further into New South Wales. Uh we do have some clearer, sunnier skies, but that is expected to change in some locations. As you can see here, some cloud forming that's likely to produce a few showers.
We've also got wet weather pushing in and some heavy falls, maybe a thunderstorm or two coming into Tasmania. This time coming in from the northeast, so that's bringing some rain relief to some dry areas in South Australia. Oh, and hello to Matt and Kayla in South Australia. Thanks for the message. Uh you've got some heavy rain risks coming through, but they are localized. So, if you're in South Australia, yes, there are some thunderstorms, some heavy bursts of rain, but you've also got some large dry spells right next to it. There is low pressure all around the southeast uh quarter of Australia, as you're going to see in a moment with the uh wind and air pressure map. And then over on the west coast, we've got rain coming in from Perth southwards today. Some heavy falls and thunderstorms through there, a fair bit of cloud as well. But once you go north of that, sunny skies, dry weather right across uh the Northern Territory as well and northern parts of Queensland. So here is the wind and air pressure map. So large area of low pressure. It's got a number of kind of like sort of centers. It's not a proper one centered low, but you are seeing low pressure around Bass Strait and further inland as well. And that's why we're seeing these patches of thunderstorms and rain. It's all kind of split apart, spread out due to the fact that it is sort of this messy low pressure zone.
There's also weak high pressure behind it. It's not overly powerful. And then the next low south of Western Australia and that's why you're getting that rain at the moment with the northwesterly winds. Temperatures are about to drop in some locations. We've also got high pressure south of Tasmania and southeast of Tasmania. That's the reason why you've got those easterly winds coming in today with that rain coming in from the northeast. So, as we have a look at the rain map going into Thursday, low pressure starts to consolidate more so on the border here in the southeast of Queensland and the northeast of New South Wales. So, there's still more rain and thunderstorms to come through. This is the forecast from this afternoon through to tomorrow afternoon. So, we're not seeing a lot of rain in western and southern parts and uh central parts of of New South Wales. Heaviest falls will be along the border and along the eastern coastline right down to the border of Victoria. Victoria's got some showers as we just saw. Few showers, a few thunderstorms here and there.
Similar story around South Australia, but high pressure is the main feature coming in there. So that's why it's mostly dry, drier then for northern parts of Queensland, for the Northern Territory and much of Western Australia.
But you can see that colder change coming through here on Thursday.
Southwestly winds arriving. And your rainfall totals are up around 30 40 millimeters along the western coastline, the southern half of it. and that will be gradually moving eastwards. And around Tasmania, a wee bit of rain as we've just seen. I think some of the rainfall totals might be a little higher than what you're seeing there. But heaviest falls will be in eastern and northern areas, which is a bit of a reverse of where you've been. And if you're in the ACT, you might get a shower, but the forecast is generally dry going into Friday. So, the low moves out to sea towards Lord How Island.
Heaviest rain remains in eastern parts of New South Wales and northern areas or northeastern areas and starts to clear away from Queensland. So most of Queensland is dry going into the end of the week just like the Northern Territory entirely dry in Western Australia. High pressure which is slowly building from the west. Got a few showers trapped underneath it. A few thunderstorms still around and a slightly cooler air flow moving into southern parts coastal parts of South Australia bringing in some showers like around Port Lincoln. Kangaroo Island and down to about the border of Victoria.
Most of Victoria, just like the ACT, is dry, but there could be a shower in there. And if you're in Western Australia, the winds are turning back to westerlys. So that means drier skies coming back in again if you live in the east. So this weekend, a burst of colder weather. You can see the blue line here.
That is indicating the polar boundary coming through. So there'll be some temperature drop uh around Tasmania, especially around the western and higher elevation areas. dry in the east. Those showers, colder wind, southwesterly winds coming into South Australia and Victoria and a little bit into New South Wales as well. You may still see a few showers building up around the western side of the Great Dividing Range. One or two coastal showers are still in the mix there. Low pressure pretty much covering the Tasmin and that's going to bring in rain for Norfolk Island more so than Lord Hell, although there could be a few thunderstorms still around. And then it's dry for the top half of Australia for Sunday. Dry in the top half of Australia. High pressure now moving into Queensland. The next big low is coming into the southwest corner of Western Australia. There could be uh gale force winds. Squalally showers with thunderstorms coming through and a temperature drop coming in for the start of next week. westerly winds blowing in here though and some rainfall going right up uh the west coast past Canavan and high pressure as I say around Queensland also stretches down into South Australia. So, South Australia is between lows and it's on the edge of a high. So, you're sort of in a neutral area where you get some showers, not a lot of wind blowing through there. And again, the blue that you see around New South Wales and Victoria at the lower end of the scale, but a risk of uh some showers coming through and there could be some heavier falls around the mountains and ranges. Windy weather through Bass Strait, windier around Tasmania with the polar boundary over you, a dusting of snow uh at higher elevation. temperature drop definitely coming through for you on Sunday. But the flip side for the east coast because you're getting west to southwest winds now, you should have clearer skies coming through or at least drier skies.
May still be cloudy in some locations, but it won't be raining by the looks of it here going through Sunday or Monday.
But the wet weather is out here at sea.
High pressure over uh Queensland. Dry weather for almost all of Queensland.
Just a couple of showers here in very remote areas. dry for the Northern Territory, but the low pressure zone over the Great Australia bite stretches up to Ellis Springs. So, you will notice the breeze coming through, the wind picking up a bit. Uh colder weather for the lower half of Western Australia as that change comes on through. And if you're ahead of that in the eastern side of South Australia, parts of uh New South Wales and Victoria will notice that nor coming out of the central part of the continent. So temperatures will go up a little bit on Monday despite that cloudier weather and risk of some showers coming through and more west coast rain for Tasmania, but dry in the east. Dry, mostly dry in ACT as well, but you might get a shower coming in a bit later on. Those showers are more likely in CRA going through to Tuesday as this large area of low pressure goes all the way back to about Sajjuna, stretches all the way out to the uh east coast and the Tasman Sea and Tasmania.
So, there'll be wind and rain, thunderstorms with that as it moves in.
So, another dose of wet weather for some people. Uh, that'll be good news for some of you. And then once you're up into Queensland, it is dry. It's dry for the Northern Territory. Couple of showers around the west coast of Western Australia, but most of those showers are right down here around places like Margaret River and Albany. And yes, that is the polar boundary coming up. So, you will notice the colder weather coming through on Tuesday if that map stays that way. We'll have to look again tomorrow. So rainfall wise, heaviest falls will be out on the Tasman Sea around the islands. Uh we've got some heavy rain inland from Port McQuary, over 100 millimeters coming through there. And we've got some heavier rain in the southeast corner of Queensland, anywhere sort of from 10 up to about 50 or 60 millimeters in more isolated locations. New South Wales is a little sort of messier, but most of the wet weather in the eastern half of it.
Victoria more so on the western and uh side and around the mountains. That's where some of the heaviest falls will be. And you're also getting that heavier rain potential coming in Albany around Albany to Margaret River about 100 millimeters possible over the next several days. And just one last thing, uh Kokus Islands uh also has some heavy rain coming through. Could be about 100 millimeters falling there over the next several days. That is all from me for today. I'll be back again tomorrow, Thursday, with your next Australia update. See you then.
