Voter who received three ballots raises new concerns as mail-in ballot canvassing begins

[00:00:00]Meanwhile, Republican gubernatorial candidate Ed Hale is raising concerns of his own about confusion and confidence in the election process. Fox 45's Rebecca Pryor explains. Rebecca?

[00:00:12]>> Kai, as we've been telling you for some time now, the State Board of Elections has repeatedly been saying that there are safeguards in place to ensure that every voter can only vote once. But after receiving three mail-in ballots for one election, we're now hearing from one voter, one of Ed Hale's long-time friends, that says he's not convinced.

[00:00:33]>> This is real. This actually happened and he came in and said, "Look at this." I thought, "Whoa, you got to be kidding me."

[00:00:39]>> As Maryland works to recover from what election officials say was a printing error from an outside vendor, all 500,000 voters requesting mail-in ballots sent replacement ballots last week to ensure everyone received their correct party-specific ballot. However, >> Right now, I'm totally confused.

[00:00:59]>> 86-year-old Vincent Del Pizzo now saying his replacement marks not the second, but the third ballot he's received in the mail.

[00:01:07]>> I got a Democrat uh ballot first. Then a few days later, I got the uh the Republican and then this Saturday, I just got another Republican, so it's mind-boggling.

[00:01:21]>> Del Pizzo adding he did recently change his voter registration from Democrat to Republican to vote for his long-time friend Ed Hale, who's running for governor. But Del Pizzo claims he did so back in April, a month before the first batch of ballots were mailed out and still doesn't understand why he received three as opposed to two.

[00:01:41]>> I I'm not uh feel safe with this process. I'm >> Today, Fox 45 sending questions to Maryland's Elections Administrator Jared De Marinis asking why Del Pizzo received three ballots, whether his recent party switch played a role, and if other voters have experienced similar issues.

[00:01:59]We have yet to hear back.

[00:02:01]>> We're dealing with uh Vince here who is uh absolutely outstanding, but if you have someone who's unscrupulous, uh it could be an opportunity for malfeasance.

[00:02:10]>> Ostensibly, he could vote three times.

[00:02:13]Right?

[00:02:14]>> In response to those concerns, the state's website claiming every envelope contains a unique code ensuring only one vote per person. Replacement ballots are also labeled as such and are accompanied by a notification letter. However, Hale still questioning if enough has been done to differentiate the new ballots from the old ones.

[00:02:34]>> I would think the simple solution for me, now I'm not in I've only been in the politics for 1 year, is to change the colors.

[00:02:42]>> And with little clarity given over how this mistake was made in the first place, others left questioning how the same system that sent the wrong ballots can guarantee the count will be right.

[00:02:54]>> And I'm free to send my mail mail-in ballot uh of this confusion. So, I'm my question is now, can I go and vote in person rather than do the uh mail-in?

[00:03:09]>> The answer to that is yes. If you agree with Elpizo here, this has all just become too confusing for you and you'd rather vote in person, you can still do so. You simply need to go on to the State Board of Elections website and cancel your mail-in ballot.
