The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has taken legal action against the Kenyan government, challenging the new high fuel prices by petitioning the court to order the Ministry of Energy to review fuel costs and clarify the pricing system, arguing that the lack of transparency in price calculations and the imposition of additional taxes has disproportionately burdened Kenyan households, businesses, and transport operators while undermining constitutional provisions and public property management laws.

The LSK lawyers have gone to court to challenge the high cost of fuel. LSK says the new fuel prices will affect Kenyans and undermine the national economy. Now this party is asking the court to order the Ministry of Energy to review the cost of fuel in the country and clarify the system for reaching prices, as Stephen Letelo informs us. The high price of fuel in the country is increasingly causing a stir. The LSK law firm is now approaching the court and asking the court to exercise its constitutional power and order the price to be re-examined.
According to LSK. The government, through the relevant ministry, has not made it clear how the new fuel price has been calculated and how the additional money was used to reduce the high cost of this product. LSK has told the court that the application of the additional tax on petroleum products has also not been made clear and even how it was applied has not been explained to Kenyans and that the measure has violated constitutional provisions and undermined laws governing the management of public property.
The society is deeply concerned that the cumulative effect of these measures has imposed a disproportionate and economically unsustainable burden on Kenyan households, business, manufacturers, transport operators and other productive sectors of the economy.
According to LSK, the new fuel prices that Kenyans are protesting lack transparency and do not take into account the economic situation of Kenyans. and it has not been properly explained and the price has been a blow to Kenyans and consumers of the product in general. The society notes with concern that significant tariff and pricing adjustments affecting millions of consumers appear to have been implemented without sufficient public participation, without transparent disclosure of underlying fiscal and policy considerations and without adequate consumer protection safeguards.
Matatu operators have already announced a 50% fare increase. I would add that this applies to travelers and even Kenyans who rely on the product every day according to LSK.
