I'm going to try and get some more tomorrow potentially actually as well because I've been really trying to get more of what's here and my experiences over to you so that you can have that personally with you. [00:01:56]The car broke down. But I'm very glad to be home to be honest. I mean, not going to start railing against Morocco, but being in Scotland is very, very good for me and I'm very glad to be here.

[00:02:10]Uh, and and I'd always planned to be back by uh Monday anyway. So, I'm pretty much fully caught up now with my schedule.

[00:02:22]I've been using my time back here to do much more computer work. Yes, I was coming by car. I was doing a a road trip through Scotland, England, France, Andor, Spain, and then eventually Morocco.

[00:02:42]Quite ambitious in a P38, Land Rover, but it was a lot of fun. So, I had a really good time with I was with and obviously our entire group was three of us were stuck in Spain. I say stuck, I mean, we're in a really, really beautiful location and we had a really, really wonderful time. So, I'm not going to complain about that at all. There's no there's no complaints to be had there.

[00:03:08]What ended up happening was I basically met some people who I have enormous amounts of respect for, and I just spent my my last public video just railing on about how much of a positive experience it was. You met your Portuguese friends and you had some good times in Marrakesh. Good stuff, man. Glad to hear you are having a good time and you explored some percussion instruments.

[00:03:38]I just spent Yeah. So, the last two videos I did were sort of explaining a couple of viral videos that I've had that people ask me questions about a lot to try and answer a lot of the things that people are really dying to find out. And then what ended up happening is I found myself going towards subjects relating to unionism and nationalism and talking about the upcoming election a little bit. If you don't know, there's an election coming up in Scotland right now. People are preparing themselves for that quite a bit. So, my plan tomorrow is I'm leaving around 10:30. I shouldn't say that cuz it's 10:27, but uh I'm leaving tomorrow morning. I'm going to go and head up to the Central Belt and I'm hoping that while I'm up there, I'll be able to meet some people and I can ask them questions. I'm curious to get especially the perspectives of immigrants on the election because I think it's something I don't really know about. So maybe you guys are more interested in the tradition bearers perspective so I could get that too. But for me I don't really know what immigrants in Scotland are going to be thinking about the election. It's a little bit of a mystery to me and I'm quite curious to find out especially on the the big question that I proposed at the end of the video which is are they going to be unionists or are they going to be nationalists or separatists?

[00:05:43]Has been a good minute, hasn't it? I've been doing lots of admin work being on a computer the whole time. Is that a tweed blazer? Yeah, it's kind of an oversized oversized tweed blazer. Yeah. But usually what I I wear this when I'm wearing like lots of hoodies and waterproof jackets and stuff like that and it goes on top of a lot of stuff because it it's very big. It allows for lots of space. Maybe if I get really fat one day, I'll wear this all the time. Do I think Scotland can survive another four years of the SNP? Uh, that's an interesting question. I have a cold. No, I don't have a cold. Um, it's uh, it's called chronic rhitis.

[00:06:31]So, I think we can survive another four years of the SNP. Survive. I mean, come on. But this country survived a lot worse than uh than the SNP for a while.

[00:06:46]I [ __ ] no SMPP. What do you think is going to happen? You think the country is going to go up in flames? We'll see. I mean, it's possible, but I don't I don't I don't think that's going to happen. Uh no, I think we'll survive.

[00:07:03]It's a question of, you know, how much more socialist policies are going to make the economy weaker. Uh um we're tough people. We can survive all sorts. I don't really I I know it's kind of a a sort of slightly satirical jokey language. I'm not totally sure that it's necessary to go that far.

[00:07:32]If you took up bag pipes today, how long would it take before you could earn cash busking on the Royal Mile? Um, I mean, if you grabbed a set of bag pipes right now and squeezed them and made a bunch of horrible noises, you could probably make money doing that tomorrow to be honest.

[00:07:49]Um, cuz even at a very be early stage, you have the diminishing return, right? So, being able to just squeeze it at all and get a reaction cuz I've seen some awful awful backpipers. There's a homeless lady who was playing on Princess Street the other day who was who was terrible.

[00:08:06]Um I've seen children play who are terrible. You get some really really awful bag pipers there. So I I I would say like the initial standard is diminishing return.

[00:08:20]Let me show you what I mean. Do you know I mean do you know what I mean by diminishing return or is that uh Let's see. Very nice little graph for you. Seeing as I've got a pen and paper.

[00:08:40]So, I'll do that and that.

[00:08:43]All right. So, this is one year, five years, 10 years. So 10 years is probably a good amount of time to sound pretty decent on the bag pipes, but so how good you are.

[00:09:24]a nice big curvy graph. So that's how good you are against how long you've been learning for. So you can see at the start it goes up a lot faster and then over time it goes a lot slower in terms of like how much people can recognize what your improvements are. So the first day that you're going to make way more difference from not being able to play to being able to at least play a scale and enchanter and then your first two years you'll probably be able to play a tune on the pipes and you'll be able to almost tune your drones a little bit even and then you know the next 10 15 years are going to be when you actually smoothe it out to be a nice player to listen to. you know, maybe in 10 years time, I would say around about that point, not necessarily 10, it could be five, but between five and I suppose 15 years, you're going to sound decent enough to listen to. And then mastery happens once you've been playing for 20 or so years, you then you start to head towards mastery. And that's just approximate. Obviously, a lot of people never ever head to that level. I like to think I won't, but there's a lot of people I know who would definitely say I don't personally have a chance of of getting there. So, those levels ribb on. Obviously, I've been the fact I've been learning for 10 years, which is a very very long time and I am where I am as a player suggests it's it's quite unlikely that I will reach a high level of mastery. Somebody said, "One hour with packing pipes. Tuning the drones takes a while."

[00:11:17]Yeah. So, so learning to tune the drones is just one of these fine tuning things that takes a good period. So, um yeah, it's it's it's something you just you can't really rush getting good at just having a sense for what's happening there. If you do learn fast, and a lot of people do learn the bag pipes very fast and the tuning less fast is something if you're learning at home, you can have a parent be there to help you tune while you're playing or at pipe bands. Like there's a lot of people at pipe bands who are really bad at tuning their bag pipes, but they're fairly decent at the actual technique, which is an okay place to be because they obviously get help from their teachers. It's not very good for practice. And if you want to do something like busking, you definitely need to be able to tune yourself.

[00:12:08]So I I would say before you go out busking, if you're pretty a pretty diligent learner, you're very disciplined, you stick to what your teacher tells you, and you have a good teacher, you can probably be out there in about 5 years.

[00:12:24]Robert Mir jumping in to remind us all that the SNP are done. Well, the question is who's going to take over?

[00:12:31]Who what government are we going to be looking at?

[00:12:35]Because the SNP might have dropped in popularity, but the Greens have surged in popularity and then you're looking at the Lib Dems surging in popularity.

[00:12:49]Then Labor are probably going to tank a little bit from the last election.

[00:12:57]always listen and I don't means tune your drones. But uh but yeah, also you've got the case where reform is going to take a huge chunk of the vote away from the Tories and that's a sort of decision they they've made that in the short term they want to prove that they have as many votes as they can possibly prove that they do have. So they're going to get them really spread out as well. They're not doing what the Greens do. So, the Greens are very smart and intentional with how they get the votes. So, they get usually less overall votes than a lot of similar tier small parties, but they target them really carefully. So, they campaign in really specific areas and they focus on just getting the vote in those places.

[00:13:49]for for reform. Their tactic is just to try and get as much overall vote as possible. So, there's going to be a lot of them in different places.

[00:14:04]It takes a lot of puff to play the bag pipes. You need good lungs. Sorry, Robin. You have had a couple of beers.

[00:14:09]People I was speaking to my grandma about this um a few days ago. A lot a lot of people were saying this to me and they have been saying it for the last 10 years that I've been playing the bag pipes.

[00:14:25]They say ah it takes a lot of puff to play. You get to have good lungs. I think if you're looking at somebody's inherent genetic competency to play the bag pipes, how good their set of lungs is is irrelevant.

[00:14:42]Like it's just not a thing. I would say if you're trying to look at how good they're going to be at the bag pipes, there's probably some markers that you can look at. I would say how patient they are and how disciplined they are are probably the most important things.

[00:14:58]But you're never going to have somebody walk up to a bag piper. You won't have somebody who doesn't play the bag pipe certainly walk up to a bag piper and say, "Wow, you sounded fantastic.

[00:15:09]You're so p you must be so patient and disciplined."

[00:15:13]doesn't really come through very often.

[00:15:16]It's like, "Oh, you must have a good set of lungs on you, son.

[00:15:23]That's why I always hear you're going to vote for reform this time, then then hopefully restore next time." Um, yeah. Yeah, I mean restore is not really an option in a lot of these places and they're going to split the vote from reform just when just about when reform have a chance of taking it from the Tories. Restore are probably going to start taking a chunk out of reform slow breath.

[00:15:58]They have a lot of the same policies to be honest. Uh reform and the Tories in this country in Scotland in in England obviously reform has power over their sovereignty. So they have the ability to control the borders. in Scotland like trying to piece together what they're saying that's actually that different. It is nitpicking.

[00:16:30]Uh I I think the one thing Malcolm offer is proposing is a slightly different approach to uh housing migrants in Glasgow. And besides from that, I mean, it's almost the exact same thing. It's a very very very slim difference.

[00:16:47]Do bag pipes always play at maximum volume?

[00:16:52]So when you're playing, you don't have control over making the volume go up and down like this. Bag wipes are pretty much three levels of volume.

[00:17:04]No sound, just drones, drones, and chancer.

[00:17:10]And each of those thresholds has to be fairly constant. Actually the no sound doesn't but the the drones have to be fairly constant and when you have the chanter has to be very very constant and it's very very strict about that. So it's it's very key that you stay on that persistent level and if you try and vary the pitch then it's going to sound quite quite unpleasant.

[00:17:36]What that results in is bag pipes leaning themselves to players who prioritize precision and it's less like an instrument like the how could you say yeah you could say maybe the violin where it's or vocals would probably be a better example where it's a lot more about the emotion. When you look at um music in general, you can maybe have sort of jazz improvisational music over here. Maybe jazz is a bad idea. Jazz has very high technical competence. But if you take impro improvisational I don't know samba drum and digu over here completely from the heart quite low skill but all about the emotion that you put into it. Then you have bagpipe music is all the way over here in the opposite side of the spectrum for the highest level of technical demand for much lower level of emotional input. And in the middle you probably got classical music where you just got a combination of being very delicate and and very demanding on the technique.

[00:18:43]How much stuff that is used today has been discovered and created by a Scottish person? Um, it's a good question, Robert. There's a lot a lot of things I could try and quiz myself and see how many Scottish inventions I can name cuz obviously in school we we were taught all these things from a young age. So we were taught about Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.

[00:19:06]We've got John Loy Bears invented television.

[00:19:11]We've got a gentleman whose name I can't remember right now who invented penicellin.

[00:19:16]Um we invented roads. We invented modern economics.

[00:19:21]Um, so Taradam invented roads. Adam Smith is the father of economics. He wrote the wealth of nations. You've got really important philosophers like David Hume.

[00:19:34]Um, Scotland's it got quite a long list of of inventions that we managed to put together for the public.

[00:19:44]What's that say? Fleming. Fleming the guy that pallet penicellin.

[00:19:50]Um, no, there's a lot a lot of there's a lot a lot of things Scotland's invented and they're all coming to mind right now, but we're quite we're quite useful. So, if you look at during the industrial revolution, Scotland was the most inventive nation in the world per capita.

[00:20:09]So, per each person, we had far more inventions than anybody else. I think we had something like 10 times second place which was in England and England had the greatest quantity overall. I was talking about this recently in my my other video about sort of Scotland versus England.

[00:20:29]Uh it started off talking about my why I played bags in a trade video. It just went on to me talking about Scotland versus England and unionism and nationalism and separatism and all this sort of stuff.

[00:20:48]as it does as it does. But it showed me that's clearly what I'm thinking about and focused on right now. And it showed me that when I go to the States, that is definitely what I want to make. And well, also when I go to the States, but certainly tomorrow when I go up to the central belt, that's what I want to be focusing on.

[00:22:06]I I just streamed the whole day. I was trying to speedrun my way to completing the watch time limits, but it was not the best approach.

[00:22:30]Do you did any of you guys watch my my really long live stream while I was in Morocco? Well, the interesting thing was that when I do these really long live streams is the average viewership is pretty much constant, doesn't I mean it it it goes like that, but whether it's a really long live stream or it's a really short live stream, the average viewership stays something around three, something like that. It's a similar kind of average.

[00:22:58]and it didn't really go up the whole time I was out there. I think at the start there was maybe a little bit more interest just because it was my first time doing the streams and then people went, "Oh, he's just live streaming all the time now. [00:23:34]So, I I I really like the notion of live streams. I really like the notion of testing ultra transparency and seeing where that can take me. But I've also found lately having not been live streamed every single day, day in day out, it's been very very useful for me because I've been able to do a lot of boring work on my computer that I just I just wouldn't want to show it to you.

[00:24:09]And obviously when you're in a privileged position where you can get somebody else to do that type of work for you, that's when you can live stream all the time. But for me right now, that that wouldn't be a very useful approach. I mean, I I need to spend that time doing that sort of stuff. and having the limited amount of time I had per day at the time, which was often as short as 20 minutes to myself, that wasn't really a possibility cuz I was doing I was doing streams for about 15 hours.

[00:24:45]So, I would spend a lot a lot of time just being there with the camera directly engaging while I was eating, while I was marching around, while I was speaking to people. All my interviews would be live streamed first and then posted onto Tik Tok in shorter form or YouTube later on.

[00:25:08]First first they were live streamed.

[00:25:13]Now I get a little bit more freedom and control over it. But I what I'm trying to figure out is exactly where I do want to try and live stream in the future.

[00:25:23]One of the the times that that I would want to stream would be during the creative process. So if I was making something like a film or an event, if I'm dressing a set, working with people people in that sense, that's the type of time I would want to be live streaming because that time I have a product that you're eventually going to be able to access, whether that's a film or an event, and a process behind that which you can experience. I would want to take you along on that experience.

[00:26:05]I make films. Amazing. Um, I mean, I haven't really made a proper film in a while. I did shoot a documentary while I was in Morocco. I forgot about that.

[00:26:28]But I did I did grow up uh really focused on films and now I'm thinking more along the lines of how I could take a film and make it into an immersive event, which is something I'd prefer to do. And that's probably what's going to be available to my audience is that maybe I I create a film and post it on the YouTube and it's fully free and accessible for everybody, but then there's an event at the end of it which they can come along and attend in Scotland and that's a way they can actually support the tradition bearsers and take part in it in that sense. How you doing on the loots? We've got some OGs here who were from the the time when I used to live stream ridiculous amounts of hours per day, a slightly different time. Uh I didn't earn as much from that as I was as I was hoping I would, but um I had a very very fantastically committed audience. You're good. Thanks. It's nice to see me active. [00:32:28]If only, man. If only. Keep up the protein intake. Protein intake is not hard cuz I eat lots and lots of meat. I eat a mostly meat diet with lots of liver and mints and stuff like that. The hard thing is getting in just overall enough mass.

[00:33:08]Um, I'm not training for anything in specific. I'm I'm literally just training to try and put on mass. I want to be healthier. I want to be uh not a skinny little runt. So, don't know if you can see the size of me right now. Maybe this is disguising it a little bit, but I'm not exactly massive and I want to be much stronger. I want to be able to, you know, do more things.

[00:33:41]I think if you look at most of my lifts, I sit just around average.

So I think yeah, if you look at most of my lifts, what I'm lifting is just a little bit over average, but most people when they look at me, they wouldn't expect that.

[00:34:15]From my appearance, I look probably significantly below average. Um, and I'm I'm also leaner than I look like. You know, my uh hipbones are really poking through the skin like big.

[00:34:34]I don't know if you can like that. That kind of shape for the girls, of course. Um, hopefully not for the girls. Hopefully just for one girl. Um, I think it's one of those things.

[00:34:50]It's a weird type of paradox. I think I I don't I don't know how much stronger I'm going to get and how much of an influence it would actually make over the taking market. I think it's probably slightly more of a personal thing. Um, of course, it's for the girls. It's the only reason he could want to get muscle.

[00:35:18]You know, if you're gonna help me find one, I appreciate it. But but no, I uh no, I've not got a girlfriend at the moment. I'd like to try and I mean, it's it's not that I'm opposed to it. I'm sure I could find a way to organize around it if that happens. But generally speaking right now, it's not a high priority for me.

[00:36:06]Most of my time is spent focused on, how can I say? I'm either spending time usually by myself or in work situations with people or with old men. When I was on the dating market and spending time with women, I was in much larger group settings. You know, I was going out to bars regularly and spending time in those types of environments were just somewhere I've not been in a while. He's a good Oh my god.

But we can also take a lot of what we have that has been a result of continual progression over periods and some degeneration but overall continual progression and we can pursue something that's rather than a purist idea of what Scottish culture could be which could eventually head us towards a position of trying to freeze in a certain idea of what it means to be Scottish but instead could be pushing to continually improve our culture in a very distinctly Scottish way and that's something I think is is a much much more positive approach to our country and further years into the future. I am absolutely pro technological advancement and I want to see the continually development the continual development and prosperity of this nation. I see no reason we would be uh one of the wealthiest nations per capita in the world through our combination of our whiskey industry and our oil reserves. I see no reason why we couldn't be on that standard as a very very successful nation. We have very very smart people who have enormous amount to contribute to the world. We have very very creative people and one of the few things in the way of us having this is our sovereignty.
