[00:00:03][music] This is the story of a land of the people who lived on it in the year 1870 and of a man whose name was Coochis.

[00:00:14][music] He was an Indian leader of the Chiraawa Apache tribe. I was involved in the story and what [music] I have to tell happened exactly as you'll see it.

[00:00:24]The only change will be that when the Apaches [music] speak, they will speak in our language.

[00:00:30]What took place is part of the history of Arizona. [music] And it began for me here where you see me riding. Since getting out of the Union Army, I'd been prospecting [music] for gold off and on. And one day, I got a message that a new colonel had come to Tucson, wanted to see me. The story started when I saw some buzzards circling in the sky. [music] Buzzard's a smart bird.

[00:00:53]Something or somebody was getting ready to die. I figured was a hurt deer or rabbit or [music] snake.

[00:01:04][music] Not a rabbit, not a deer.

[00:01:09]His [music] kind was more dangerous than a snake.

[00:01:13]He was an Apache. [music] For 10 years, we'd been on a savage war with his people. [music] A bloody no give, no take war. Heat. Heat.

[00:01:25][music] drink.

[00:02:09]Ah, better slow.

[00:02:22]I got to kill you before.

[00:02:39]I knew it was dangerous to keep a fire going in Apache country, but the boy's wounds were badly infected and he was running a high fever. He had eight pieces of buckshot in his back and I [music] had to dig every one of them out with my knife. I could hear him grind [music] his teeth together, but he never let out a sound. For the next few days, I panned the stream for gold and kept an eye on the boy. I wanted to be on the move, and I was glad he was getting his strength back quickly. [music] Your legs feel stronger today. A >> little bit. [music] >> You've still got a limp.

[00:03:23][music] >> Today I must leave.

[00:03:26]>> Now I must go. Too soon for you.

[00:03:28]>> For my legs, yes. But for my family, no.

[00:03:31]This is my novice time. [music] I am 14, so I learn to be a man. I go on trips alone.

[00:03:37]But [music] I have been away too long.

[00:03:40]In the wiki up, my mother is crying. My father looks for me. I think I am their only one now. My brother and my sister were killed at Big Creek. [music] [music] My mother is crying. He said, "Funny, it never struck me that an Apache woman would cry over her son like any other woman. Apaches are wild animals." We all said, "Do you [music] pray to kill her of enemies?"

[00:04:20]>> Not even to lifegiver, [music] the ones up there.

[00:04:24]>> Oh, now we have another name. Apaches prayed for all white men to die.

[00:04:30]But now I pray to keep you safe. At sunset last night, [music] I threw pollen to the four winds for you. Well, thanks, boy.

[00:04:40]>> This is very big against headache and [music] sickness.

[00:04:45]Now it is yours.

[00:04:50][music] They could have killed. Put away your gun.

[00:05:00]I know my people. They have been watching us. They see I am not harmed.

[00:05:11]This is clear talk. It says they can still kill.

[00:05:27]This white man is my friend.

[00:05:30]This white man is my friend.

[00:06:01]He must not be hurt.

[00:06:02]>> When did my son become a tame Apache?

[00:06:05]>> Father, look. He gave me life again when the soldiers wounded me.

[00:06:09]>> Where did you meet soldiers?

[00:06:11]>> It will shame us to say >> when Apache should not do what others cannot know. This one. He was with them.

[00:06:17]>> No, he found me later. He healed me. It will be wrong to harm him.

[00:06:22]>> You do not give orders.

[00:06:25]>> You speak our tongue.

[00:06:26]>> A little.

[00:06:28]>> White men pay many dollars for the scalp of an Apache. You know that.

[00:06:31]>> I know.

[00:06:32]>> Then why did you not take his skill?

[00:06:34]>> If I kill an Apache, it'll not be for scalp or money.

[00:06:38]>> Why not? My people and your people are at war.

[00:06:40]>> It is not my way to fight. It >> is the way of all white eyes. It >> is not my way. You are a woman maybe.

[00:06:49]>> It is well known that Apaches do not take scalps either and they are not women. He hides something. Why are you here in our mountains?

[00:06:57]>> I look for gold and silver.

[00:06:59]>> For what?

[00:07:01]>> For yellow iron. [laughter] >> You did not kill.

[00:07:07]We will not kill this time. But not again.

[00:07:12]Give him his gun.

[00:07:14]>> [music] [music] >> They wanted to kill me, all right, but they let me go. I learned things that day. Apache mothers cried about their sons. [music] Apache men had a sense of fair play.

[00:09:02]Ambush. Run. [screaming] Woohoo!

[00:09:09][screaming] [music] Two men were killed and for three others it was much worse because they were only wounded.

[00:09:33]But this was war and there was terrible cruelty from both sides.

[00:09:38][music] They found a pouch in one of the wounded men and in the pouch there were three Apache scalps. [music] So they dug a pit on the ground and they rubbed his face with the juice of a messcal plant. And they made [music] me watch the ants come.

[00:09:58][music] Learn it. Learn it well. This is Apache.

[00:10:01]You have no right here. Where Coochis lives, no white man can live.

[00:10:07]Take [music] your weapons. Go. Let your base not be seen again.

[00:10:42]>> Hey, Tom. Did >> you find yourself a gold man?

[00:10:45]>> No.

[00:10:50]>> We have smoked turkey today. No, just coffee.

[00:10:56]>> Wipe them all out virtually.

[00:11:00]>> Yes, sir.

[00:11:02]>> I'm Colonel Banell.

[00:11:04]You received my message.

[00:11:05]>> That's why I'm here, Colonel. What's on your mind?

[00:11:07]>> I've just been given the command at Fort Grant.

[00:11:09]>> Congratulations.

[00:11:10]>> My orders are to clean out Coochis and his Apaches from the Graham Mountain area.

[00:11:15]>> Pretty big order, sir.

[00:11:16]>> Wipe them all out. Butcher them like hogs.

[00:11:20]like harm.

[00:11:23]>> This man was in a party of miners ambushed yesterday afternoon by Apaches.

[00:11:27]Half of them were killed.

[00:11:29]>> Whereabouts was the ambush?

[00:11:30]>> Just south of here.

[00:11:31]>> He said they wounded Coochis. Said they got 10 or 12 Apaches out of a war party of 50.

[00:11:36]>> There weren't 50. There were only five and out of one of them got scratched.

[00:11:40]>> How do you know, Jeffs? I watched it.

[00:11:44]>> Watched it. Seems to me most men would have lent a hand.

[00:11:47]>> I was hog tied. The Apaches jumped me earlier.

[00:11:50]>> Oh, you fought your way out, eh?

[00:11:52]>> They let me go.

[00:11:55]>> Never heard of a thing like that happening to a white man. Did you, John?

[00:12:00]>> No.

[00:12:01]>> Did you, Mil?

[00:12:03]>> No.

[00:12:07]>> I ran across a wounded cheer car boy. I healed them up. I guess they thought they owed me something.

[00:12:13]>> Pat's plan fair.

[00:12:15]>> Yes.

[00:12:16]>> I don't understand. You mean you found a wounded Apache and didn't kill him?

[00:12:20]>> That's right.

[00:12:23]>> I'd like to ask you why.

[00:12:40]This what you want to say me about, Colonel >> Jeffs?

[00:12:44]I think I know how we can stop Go Cheese.

[00:12:47]I have 250 freshmen from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. They're smart, disciplined troopers.

[00:12:51]>> Yes, I've seen those fellows around.

[00:12:53]>> I have a good plan. I want information from you and I want you to do a little recon orderering for me. In 6 months, the war will be over and we'll have Kuchis up by his neck.

[00:13:01]>> No, you won't, Colonel.

[00:13:02]>> Listen, Jeff. I'm an expert on open field warfare. I have 30. Can't even read a map. But he and his men know every gully, every foot of mountain, every water hole in Arizona.

[00:13:13]His horses can go twice as far as yours in a day. and his men can run on foot as far as a horse can run. He can't write his name, but his intelligence service knows when you got to Fort Grant and how many men you've got. He stopped the Butterfield stage from running. He stopped the US males from going through.

[00:13:32]And for the first time in Indian history, he has all the Apaches from all the tribes fighting under one command.

[00:13:38]You're not going to string him up in 6 months, Colonel. Not in six years.

[00:13:43]It ain't Chance. Terry >> Jeffards, it was y going to scout for me. You can find somebody else.

[00:13:51]>> Maybe Captain Jeff became too friendly with the Apaches. Maybe he doesn't know what side he's on.

[00:14:00]>> I'm not looking for trouble, but if you don't fight against them, you're with them. And I've got a right to say that.

[00:14:06]>> Ben Slade. I own a ranch only a mile out from Fort Grant. Even so, the Apaches burned my house last month.

[00:14:13]My wife was inside. You almost got my boy, too. Seems to me a white man like you would want to see that sort of thing stopped.

[00:14:20]>> That's right. Anybody would. And why don't you join the colonel staff?

[00:14:24]>> That's private business, slave.

[00:14:25]>> Oh, ain't private business. Not when they're murdering our women and kids.

[00:14:29]>> At Big Creek, we murdered Indian women and kids.

[00:14:31]>> Coochi started this in any man.

[00:14:32]>> Oh, now just let's get the facts straight here. Coochis didn't start this war. A snoody little lieutenant fresh out of the east started. He flew a flag of truce. which Coochis honored and then he hanged Coochis's brother and five others under the flag.

[00:14:46]>> Oh, you hear all sorts of stories.

[00:14:48]>> You want to know why I didn't kill that Apache boy? Well, for the same reason I wouldn't kill your boy or scout for the army. I'm sick and tired of all this killing. Besides, who asses out here in the first place?

[00:14:58]>> I don't know, Tom. I don't claim a white man's always done right. But we're bringing civilization here, ain't we?

[00:15:04]Clothes, carpets, hats, boots, medicine.

[00:15:07]Why, I got a wagon load of first class whiskey waiting for me in the East. I could sell that at a dollar a bottle if it wasn't for co cheese.

[00:15:43]>> I'd take the army and the navy. No eastern males going out to come in for 7 weeks. The Apaches are shooting my job right from under me.

[00:15:50]>> Well, you know, Mil, I kind of think maybe there's a way to get your mail through.

[00:15:55]>> Can I have the use of this office every afternoon for a while?

[00:15:58]>> Oh, what for?

[00:15:59]>> Juan.

[00:16:01]Juan, I've got some work for you. I want to hire you for maybe almost a moon. I want you to teach me to speak Apache good. I want to learn about Apache spirits. I want to learn about the Apache ways. Apache in here.

[00:16:13]>> No white man has to learn these things.

[00:16:16]>> I want to speak to Coochis. Are you crazy, Tom?

[00:16:19]>> I tell you, Mil, I'm sick and tired of being in the middle. I'm tired of having people like Lowry, and even you and Terry ask me which side I'm on. I've been willing to take a chance up in Coochis's territory to look for gold.

[00:16:28]All right, now I'll take a chance on something else.

[00:16:31]>> Coochis will not speak with white men.

[00:16:33]>> We'll send up smoke signals. He will not come to see you.

[00:16:35]>> No. No. I want to go and see him.

[00:16:38]>> To his stronghold.

[00:16:39]>> That's right.

[00:16:40]>> No white man's seen Kachis in 10 years and live to tell it.

[00:16:43]>> Well, there was a time when you could parlay with him.

[00:17:47]>> Last night, I heard an owl. The worst of all signs. It is not yet too late.

[00:18:57]For 3 days I climbed higher into the mountains in which the Apache stronghold was [music] hidden.

[00:20:24]I knew then that Coochis had given me permission to enter.

[00:20:28]>> [music] >> I kept my hands visible away from my weapons and I tried to look at ease. [music] [music] [music] Heat.

[00:22:28]It is known that the chief of the Cherikawa Apaches is the greatest Indian leader.

[00:22:34]I've come to speak to him about the welfare of his people. It is known that he respects truth as he respects bravery.

[00:22:55]You hold these for me?

[00:22:59]I'll want them when I leave.

[00:23:05]How do you know you will leave here alive?

[00:23:14]>> I am Coochis.

[00:23:16]Speak.

[00:23:21]>> When the Indian wishes to signal his brother, he does so by smoke signs.

[00:23:28]This is the white man's signal. My brothers far away can look at this and understand my meaning. We call this mail.

[00:23:37]And the men who carry the mail are like the air that carries the Apache smoke signals.

[00:23:43]Now they seek no trouble. Yet your warriors kill them. I have come here to ask you that you let these men travel in safety.

[00:23:53]>> This mail carries war signals against us.

[00:23:56]>> Oh no. This is this is used for other talk. War signals are sent by the military by special ways.

[00:33:45]>> They meet by accident where no one sees them.

[00:33:53]>> Well, I understand.

[00:33:56]>> Now, I must go. I have work to do to pick juniper berries.

[00:34:05]>> I was going to walk up that way myself by accident.

[00:35:20]So now when I go away, I'll be lonely for someone [music] for the first time in my life.

[00:36:00]It will show the whites what power the Apache has. The idea [music] makes me laugh a little. It is a good step. The seed is small. Well, maybe the tree will grow big. I'll be happy to tell my people.

[00:36:16]>> Does it state, Captain, you saw Coochis himself?

[00:36:19]>> I tried.

[00:36:20]>> Any lad who' go to Coochis's camp alone is some punkin of a man?

[00:36:24]>> You're a blasted liar.

[00:36:26]>> I believe Captain Jeff's word. The word of an Apache murder is something else.

[00:36:32]>> Coochi said the mail had rid.

[00:36:35]While you were up there with him, his fighters attacked a wagon train just 40 mi east and killed every person in it.

[00:36:41]Now, the band attacked Pete Kleiner's ranch and killed three men and a boy.

[00:36:47]>> Now, Coochis never said anything about calling off the war. He just said the mail was going through.

[00:36:53]>> Well, if you're so full of faith in the word of an Indian, will you lay a little bet on it?

[00:36:57]>> You name it.

[00:36:58]>> Will you lay $300, five riders in succession, leave here, and five come back?

[00:37:06]You got a bet.

[00:37:10]Mail's piled up. The roots guaranteed safe by Tom Jeffs and his pel coach cheese. Three days of riding in the sunshine at high pay. Uh, who's first?

[00:37:27]Looks like you have to go yourself, Jeff. Only that won't prove a thing.

[00:37:32]>> I'll go.

[00:38:31]>> A few smoke signals. Not one live. I'm >> all right, Tom. Why'd you take so long?

[00:38:37]Well, if you want the truth, when I rolled in to save at Port Boy, I got drunk. [music] Took me time to sober up.

[00:38:43][laughter] One got through, Jeffers, but there's another four to go. I still think my bet's safe.

[00:38:49]>> You want to double it?

[00:38:53]>> A few days after Duffield returned, we sent out a second rider. [music] He thought he saw some Apaches trailing him, but nothing happened. The third rider said it was that peaceful on the trail, he almost fell asleep. And when the fourth rider went out, I was so proud of Coochis, I was ready to bust.

[00:39:09][music] The days passed quietly, and on one of those quiet days, they started a wagon train out from Messiah Park to Tucson. Colonel Bernal was in charge.
