Why Are People So Uncomfortable With Extended Breastfeeding?

[00:00:00]One thing I never expected when becoming a mom was how controversial breastfeeding would become after my daughter turned one. Nobody cared when she was a newborn. Nobody questioned it when she was 6 months, but once she became a toddler, everyone seemed to have an opinion. Hi everybody and welcome back and welcome if you are new here. Taylor and I'm a first time mom sharing real motherhood, breastfeeding, attachment parenting, and raising our daughter. If you're into this content, make sure you subscribe. Now, let's get into today's video. Now, when I got pregnant, my main goal was simply just to breastfeed if I could. I wasn't thinking about breastfeeding a toddler.

[00:00:40]I wasn't thinking about extended breastfeeding. I didn't even know what it was. I was truly just hoping that it would work after my breast augmentation.

[00:00:48]But, as time went on, breastfeeding became something so much more than food.

[00:00:52]It became comfort, connection, security, the health benefits for me and her. It was a way for us to reconnect especially after a busy day.

[00:01:04]Honestly, it became one of my favorite parts of motherhood. The strange thing is is that the older my daughter gets, the more opinions that people start to have. I've heard things like, "She's too old."

[00:01:16]Or, you know, "She's only doing it for comfort." "Is she even getting milk when she's doing that?" "Is she using you as a pacifier?" which doesn't make any sense. Speaking of.

[00:01:30]Um "You're creating a dependency."

[00:01:35]>> [gasps] >> "She doesn't need that anymore and why don't you just stop?" And the most interesting thing of all of these comments is that it comes from people that really have never experienced this relationship. They don't see our day-to-day life. They don't see how naturally breastfeeding fits into our family. They don't see how happy and healthy she is and what I've truly learned is that breastfeeding past 1 year truly makes other people uncomfortable. And the sad part is it's because they just it's not something that they see often. It's outside what many people consider normal. But just because something isn't common, it doesn't mean that it's wrong. Now, at the end of the day, friends, every family needs to make the choices for themselves of what works for them. For us, breastfeeding is still working. And until it doesn't, I don't feel the pressure to stop. I truly love to know your thoughts down in the comments.
