GPS guidance systems help farmers maintain straight lines during field operations by providing visual feedback through color-coded indicators (green for progress, red for tool dimensions), eliminating the need for traditional methods like hanging sacks at field ends; however, these systems require proper shutdown procedures and can be affected by mechanical issues such as cotter pin failures in vintage equipment.

Trying GPS Farming in a Vintage Tractor Went WrongAdded:
It's a very windy day, but a beautiful day to learn about tractor GPS.
>> That's your tool.
>> This Okay.
>> Now, we run this way.
And that broke it up. Nice.
Yep.
>> Show you what's wrong with this field.
>> That's partially what's wrong with this field.
>> The bumpy bumpies.
>> That and also wherever the disc went down, it left a hump.
>> Oh, I see it.
>> When you went this direction with the disc.
>> Yeah, >> see there's a hump.
>> Oh, I know. That's the little line that I missed. I missed that, I think.
>> Well, I didn't know about that.
>> I think I missed that one little line.
>> Another good reason then. See how dippy that? It's not smooth.
>> Yeah, it was very, very bumpy out here.
>> Up rough.
>> Yeah.
>> So, I'm going to put the rag this way.
>> Oh, >> across the whole field.
>> Okay.
>> But you see that's hard to do.
>> Yeah.
>> Without some guidelines. So you can make a circle and it will give you the exact guideline even though you don't have a line, >> right?
>> You'll have a line to follow.
>> I was trying to line up with the tree at the end of, you know, but it's hard to do cuz >> it's hard to do. That's why we have GPS.
>> Yeah. You can't quite keep it straight.
>> That's what GPS is all about. Farmers used to hang sacks at one end of the field. Oh, really?
>> Try to aim the sacks, but now we don't have to do that, >> right?
>> So now we install the GPS, the tractor.
>> Okay.
The tractor you're running is the cab tractor over there.
>> Oh, good. I get to drive a different tractor today.
Ah, okay.
Got it. Okay, hooking it up.
>> So, that's really all there is to nuisance. You have to change tractors.
Yeah, >> she let me back it out of here.
>> Okay, that's probably best.
>> On your side, there is a little switch.
>> It says run.
>> Says run and off. Put it on run.
>> Okay, >> that's the only thing you have to do to turn off your tractor.
>> Press it to the stop. Okay, >> it has a key.
>> Okay, >> has that little lever.
>> Apparently, I'm going to be driving this Alice Chowmers today. I've never run any of these that are a little more, what's the word? vintage.
So, we'll see how that goes.
It's windier today than the other day's video.
I lose my hat.
M.
M.
back it up.
>> Okay. Do I need to know anything special about ears and such?
Green.
Shut it up.
>> Okay.
>> Good job.
Go.
>> Okay.
The second one will match.
This guidance pattern is called last pass on this Raven Cruiser 2 GPS. It's best used for like irregular shaped fields or paths where you make your first pass and then it will stick to that and kind of give guide you based on your first line.
>> Wow, look at that. That's fancy. What it's going to do is record your progress by a green bar.
>> Okay?
>> And it's going to when you turn, it's going to show you lots of red lines that are your exact dimension of your tool.
>> Okay?
>> You're going to pick out like the fourth or fifth line to make a land.
>> Okay.
>> When you get to that big green spot that won't let you go through, you'll have to go around it, obviously.
>> Oh, yeah. The mouse. You'll >> still find your line when you go back.
>> Oh, okay. All right.
Well, it's very simple.
>> Very simple.
We'll see about that.
>> Yeah.
>> Because this doesn't have a nice cartwheel drive.
>> Yeah.
>> You have to use brakes sometimes to get the front wheels to not spin.
>> Oh, okay. Which is these.
>> You want to turn right and push the right wheel. Turn left and push the left.
>> Oh gosh. Okay.
>> You're not even using them at all.
>> Turn right. Push the right. Turn left.
push the left probably the one grab the brake so >> yeah. Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> I think so.
>> Just like going along.
>> Oh gosh. So he says okay we're going to see what we can do.
All right. Here we go.
All right. We're going to push it. Going to put it in third.
Just here.
There.
Okay.
Oh, I got to line it up.
This way.
Straight.
Oh my goodness. Okay.
It's harder to drive this one. One round down.
See it out there? Here we go. I got to go after the line. There it is.
Okay, I went a little too soon. I got nervous.
Following my line.
Gosh. Okay, this tractor is not too hard to drive. It's not as smooth as the other ones, but it's all right.
I like having the GPS, though. That's definitely helpful.
It's a nice little curve I've got going up there and then it lines up straight.
Okay, I got this. I think it's very windy in here compared to the cab that has doors and windows. I kind of wish I wore like a heavier jacket.
I got to slow down.
Okay, I'm styling now. It's too cold in that tractor, so I borrowed all mom's clothes. Very purple today. I did not expect to be in this tractor. All right, back in the tractor I go.
Unfortunately, when I came back from putting on some extra clothes, the GPS went off as soon as I turned the tractor back on. And at that point, I didn't know how to turn it back on. So, I just kind of went along the lines I'd already established, which worked just fine. But I did miss the GPS. Okay, that was fun.
I was going to go back toward the house so that dad could take over and the clutch slipped out.
So, as you can see, this is where normally I would push the clutch down, but it's like it fell if I go to push it. I was like, I guess I'll just keep driving in circles all night cuz it won't turn off. So, I just turned the switch on the side to stop, but I only got probably halfway back, maybe a little more.
He's rescued me.
Well, I was just going to come back to the house. I didn't see what you did.
>> I didn't do anything.
>> You broke it.
>> All right.
Hello, tractor.
We're back.
>> Do you?
>> Oh, here.
>> Right.
>> Yeah. I went to push on it. I was like, there's no clutch.
>> This is your clutch?
>> Yeah.
>> Right here.
>> Yeah. So, this little >> the cotter pin broke out and it shook out of there. Shook it out of the hole.
>> Oh, okay.
>> Easy enough fix.
>> We just got to put a pin back in there.
>> Okay.
>> So, that's what you Okay.
>> Yeah, you have to turn it on. Run.
>> I knew there was something silly about this tractor. I just wasn't sure.
>> That's how I turned it off cuz I was like, "How do I turn it off? It just wants to keep going."
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Cuz I couldn't shift it. Okay.
>> Well, you can't turn the key and it didn't shut it off.
No, it must have just like the vibration of the tractor >> just knocked it out.
>> This >> We're going to find a pin.
>> Cotter pins.
>> Yeah, he's got a bunch.
>> Got a bunch of them all in here.
>> And he's got some in the tool boxes on the tractors.
>> All right, we're going to go see if we can fit a cotter pin in there and fix it. Brr. No heat in that tractor. Darn it. I've been spoiled.
I've been spoiled now. All right, let's see if I can I don't know if I can get a shot of it. Did you do it?
>> Maybe I can do it. This guy.
>> No, it's I just fell.
>> Oh, yeah. It's lost. Whatever.
>> It'd be in that area right there.
>> Let's see.
>> I go get another one.
>> Well, the sun is out now.
It's looking glorious.
It's so cold. Oh, this is pretty.
Wow.
Can see all the way over to the red barn.
He's back.
Don't drop this one.
Maybe. Gosh, they don't make it easy, do they? There you go. You brought it.
And it fell.
>> Oh no.
>> It bent. It bent enough.
>> I don't know why it's so hard to pin that. It's probably the toughest cotter pin I've ever seen. But >> yeah. Oh, >> can you push against the thing like the metal next to it and just like push against it with the edge of that thing?
That's was very vague.
>> You know that thing >> against the thing with the other thing.
>> I mean, it's sufficient to get it over to the get a better fix.
>> Yeah.
Well, that's it for today's farm adventures. Thanks so much for watching and we'll see you next time. Happy farming.
>> Good night, tractor.
