This video demonstrates the practical application of right triangle geometry in roof construction, where the builder calculates and adjusts ridge height (7 ft peak for a 4 ft base) to create proper truss angles, showing how structural design requires iterative problem-solving when initial plans don't match actual site conditions, and how notching techniques allow for flexible truss assembly to accommodate varying roof dimensions.

Rain washing away the Summer KitchenAdded:
Well, hello people. Mark Holmes here, and as always, I appreciate each and every one of you guys. It has been raining like crazy. And I've been wanting to work on my building. I'm going to work on a little bit in the rain here. I am actually going to change things up because I have my Simpson uh ties that are here. And I actually thought that I had a slightly different angle on this. So, I've actually got to do a right triangle for my ridge. Which means that the peak of this needs to be 7 ft because this is 4 ft.
So, I'm going to take that off, and I'm going to put my uh piece on here up. And then I have some new posts that I'm going to cut to go on there. Now, here's the other thing on this is this is a lot wider than what I thought it was going to be. So, them being turned this way is not going to work. So, what we're going to do is we're going to turn them this way. And then I'm going to notch it out for my ridge board to actually drop into it.
So, first thing I'm going to do is I'm just going to take this off, and then I can go ahead and put my new bracket up on here. And then I'll cut my piece that's going to go up there. So, if I can do nothing other than get the bracket on here before it really starts raining real heavy, I'd actually be happy because I haven't been able to do anything. You want to know how much rain we've had? Look at this.
Now, this is not a rain gauge because it's not the perfect size it's supposed to be.
But, that's a lot of rain. And since we haven't been getting much rain, that's a good thing for us cuz uh the James River and the Shenandoah River are about the record lows of what they've ever had. Ever, ever, forever, ever. So, getting that uh this rain, and we've got a couple more days at least of it, is definitely a good thing.
Okay, so this is not the right one.
Hmm.
I hope I have the one here.
That'd be a terrible thing.
Nope, that's not the right one either.
Okay, let's see if we can find the right size. Now, I could stop right here and say I did something, but if I can cut the post to go here on the end, man, I would feel freaking fantastic right now because that would be a long ways um ahead right now. So, I think I am going to go ahead and cut one of those. I've got some bread and stuff that's uh in the bread machine cooking right now.
I've got some pieces for my bookcases that are drying right now. Um so, uh if I take half an hour, I can probably get this thing together. So, let's do that.
Okay, so this is our mast, and what we've done is we've notched this out so that way our doubled-up 2 by 12 uh 2 by 10s will be able to wrestle in here. I'm actually going to have to make three of these because one will go here, one will go in the middle, one will go on the end, and this will make our main trusses that are going to be carrying the load uh to each of these um joists in here.
So, this is how it's designed to be, and we'll use that timber truss up there to make sure that it is locked in place.
This is going to look good. So, if I can at least get this one up in here um maybe tomorrow if it's not rained too much, I'll put the side ones on, but it is really muddy over here right now with all the rain.
But, I'm not complaining about having the rain. I'm happy about it. But, we have over here this is what I was talking about to try and keep the critters out of the garden, but I'm sure that they'll just jump off the porch and get into here. But, this is uh going to eventually become a greenhouse, and if it ends up being that they really start eating and stuff in here a lot, we may go ahead and build the greenhouse sooner so that way we can close it up so that way they can't get in.
Damn critters.
>> All right, so try.
All right, so I'm looking at this. This is where it's a pooch screw.
If I want to use the brackets that are typical for this, that's what it would be to make that a right angle so that way it would fit in there. That's really a lot taller than I think I want it.
So, what that would mean is I wouldn't be able to use the brackets that are 90° to go there. So, I'm going to ask my wife's opinion and see what she thinks. But, I don't think one, I don't want to roof this at steep. That's really steep. That's way too steep. So, we'll look at this and see what she thinks.
Yeah, I don't want that roof to be that that that that tall. I'm going to go back to the height that I had for the mast before. But, I'm going to go ahead and put it on here. Uh it actually saved me some wood because I can use that for my uh um sunroom that we're going to be or greenhouse that we're going to use. So, I'm going to put this one up and the rain is beginning to come back, but this at least will get me something done on this project.
>> [snorts] >> There we go. That's better.
All right, I got something done.
Okay.
Now it's beginning to rain a little bit, so I'm going to go inside and work on it. So, that's a lot less steep. I like that actually a lot better.
So, let me go in here. I'm going to be working on the bookcases I can sand that stuff out so she can paint it. Like start doing the face frame.
