Imagine if I told you your phone charging, metal rusting, and you breathing are all the same kind of reaction.
It's called redox, and [music] once you see it, you can't unsee it. I'm going to make redox so clear you'll spot it everywhere today. Redox means electrons move.
Oxidation is losing electrons. Reduction is gaining. Oil rig. When something loses electrons, its oxidation state goes up. When it gains, [music] it goes down. They always happen together. One gives, one takes.
Think of it like money. Electrons are cash. An oxidizing agent is the collector. It makes others pay electrons and gets reduced. [music] A reducing agent is the spender. It gives electrons and gets oxidized. Chemists split [music] redox into half reactions to count electrons.
Balance atoms, then charge with electrons, then add H+ and H2O in acid or OH- in base.
Those electrons line up with energy called potential. Different pairs have different pull measured in volts.
Galvanic cells use spontaneous redox to make electricity. Electrolytic cells use electricity to force non-spontaneous reactions. [music] In your body, oxygen is a powerful oxidizer. You burn food by passing electrons along chains to make ATP. [music] Plants flip it in photosynthesis. Light lifts electrons first.
Your phone battery? [music] That's two redox partners separated, so electrons travel through your cable instead of mixing. [music] Rust on a bike is iron getting oxidized. Paint blocks oxygen and water, and sacrificial [music] zinc gives up electrons first. Bleach and peroxide are oxidizers. They steal electrons from stains and germs. Food browning? Cut apples oxidize. Lemon juice reduces and acid slows enzymes.
Pools use chlorine redox to disinfect.
Same story. Electrons move. Energy flows. Chemistry happens. Remember oil rig. Oxidation is losing. Reduction is gaining. Track electrons with half reactions and compare pull with volts.
Today, notice metals changing. [music] That's redox at work. Charging?
Electrons are doing the heavy lifting.
Breathing fuels your electron economy.
Once you see redox, you can't unsee it.
