The U-2 spy plane incident of May 1, 1960, demonstrates how technological superiority can be undermined by strategic deception and the importance of intelligence gathering in Cold War conflicts. The American U-2, flying at 70,000 feet to photograph Soviet military installations, was shot down by Soviet S-75 missiles, exposing the US's false claim that the pilot entered Soviet airspace due to an oxygen system malfunction. This event revealed that even advanced technology cannot guarantee safety when adversaries possess sophisticated countermeasures and when diplomatic lies are exposed.

An American made U-2 spy plane was carrying out surveillance in Soviet Union airspace at an altitude of 70,000 ft. Its mission was to take high quality images of the Soviet Union's secret military installations. This US spy plane was considered a technological masterpiece of its time. The special cameras installed in this U-2 aircraft could see every detail on the ground even from such a great height. The United States was confident that no missile of the Soviet Union could reach such an altitude and hit it. The US had no idea when the Soviet Union had developed dangerous missiles like the S-75 and advanced radar systems. On May 1st, 1960, this American U-2 spy plane took off from a US base in Asia. Its pilot Francis Gary Powers entered [music] the Soviet Union through the route of Tajikistan. When this aircraft reached over Western Russia, Soviet forces fired their S-75 missiles. Out of these three missiles, one finally hit the aircraft. The United States made the excuse that due to a technical fault in the aircraft's oxygen system, the pilot had become unconscious and the aircraft had mistakenly entered Soviet Union airspace. But this lie was exposed when the Soviet Union presented the living pilot and the wreckage of the aircraft to the entire world.
