This video demonstrates proper police interrogation procedures, including reading Miranda rights, explaining the right to remain silent, the right to legal counsel, and the right to have a lawyer appointed if unaffordable. The officer uses humor and sarcasm to engage suspects while maintaining professional conduct, explaining the legal distinction between 'needs' and 'wants' in theft cases, and providing clear information about court procedures, citation requirements, and the consequences of failing to appear in court.

>> Hello.
>> How are you?
>> No, ma'am. You are being on record.
>> So, hi Brooke here.
>> Oh, could this be?
Hello, it's me, Sergeant Patter.
All right, before we do anything here, I got something to read to you both. All right.
Okay.
So, all right. You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand?
>> Is that a yes?
>> Yes. And you is that a yes?
Okay, I heard you. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law.
Do you understand?
>> Mr. Nolan, do you understand?
>> Okay. You have the right at this time to talk to a lawyer and have him present with you while you're being questioned.
Do you understand?
>> Yes.
>> Yes. Okay. If you not a afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you before questioning if you wish. Do you understand?
>> Yes.
>> Okay. You can decide at any time to exercise these rights, not answer any questions or make any statements. You understand?
>> Yes.
>> Okay. And do you understand each of these rights I've explained to you?
>> Yes.
>> Okay. Mr. Zayn, what happened?
>> I started watching Jenny here while she was coming out of electronics. She had all the high dollar electronics sitting in the cart there and some of it already in a reusable bag. She went over to grocery where she picked up the milk and some of the grocery items and met in the action alley. They went across the front end over and get their assignments and stuff there and went over to customer service where they returned. Looked like a bag of kitty litter. I'll be checking to see if I came in with them. She did say she brought it in with her, but I'll check video to verify. Uh from there they turned and went directly out the doors here and onto the sidewalk where I stopped them.
>> Past all points of sale.
>> Yes, sir.
>> Okay. Okay. They both did notify me that they've stolen multiple times in the past as well >> from here.
>> Um, they're from Spokane. I didn't ask specifically the story, but >> Spokane. Are they trespass?
>> I could not find them in our system, but I'll dig a little deeper. Findings.
>> Okay.
>> What's that?
>> Or not.
>> Not trespass. You're good at stealing up there, but not so good. It's hard to get past uh Zayn. So, it's just tough. It's tough. He's good at what he does. He's good at what he does. So, we'll start with you. Uh, Jenny, give me the reason.
Give me the excuse. What's uh what's going on?
>> You've been broke for a while.
It's just been a really hard year.
Bad decision.
>> You've been broke broke for a while.
>> Yeah, it's been >> That's a very long story.
>> Yeah. He has health issues, so he hasn't been able to work for a couple years.
So, it's just been like me supporting us and it's been rough.
>> Okay. with our apartment and my job.
>> No, I times can be tough. I I understand that. But you needed to steal a JBL speaker.
>> Okay. Do you see the issue with that?
Like if you're if you're broke, like I can understand. It's a like what's that uh lay miserable?
>> You know, Jean Valjon, he steals a loaf of bread because he's broke, >> right? But Jean Valjian didn't steal a JBL speaker, right? Because that's a want. Wants versus needs.
>> Exactly. That's the thing. It's like I haven't been able to buy myself anything like nice. So, it's not a need. You're right.
>> Okay.
Did you I mean, it doesn't look like you brought anything that a person would need or stole. I'm sorry, not bought.
That's my bad. Stole. It doesn't look like you stole anything a person would need.
>> There's some milk and chips and stuff on there, but most of the high dollar stuff.
>> Okay. Okay. So, the the brokerage uses don't really doesn't really work.
Doesn't even make sense.
>> Well, I was just saying like I haven't been able to get anything that I would, you know, want. So, >> well, okay.
>> I don't know if that helps.
>> So, you two came down here from Spokane with the intention of stealing stuff?
>> Oh, no. We had a friend out here.
>> You have a friend who lives down here?
>> So, you're visiting them, decided this was the place you wanted to go do this, and you're going to go back and visit them.
>> No.
head back up to school again.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
Okay.
Uh Oh. Any uh is everything that Mr. Zayn said accurate?
Any sort of >> I believe so.
>> Do you think what he said is accurate?
You came in You both came in with the intention to steal items. You didn't pay for the items, you stole the items. Is that the long and the short of it?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. $430 and Well, $399.58.
Uh, of course, don't look at sales tax.
Isn't that wild? I understand. I guess the one time you can steal from the government, I suppose. Uh, okay. Well, I haven't done one of these in a while, but they both stole.
Yeah, but you just said you both came here with the intention to steal, so that's >> Yeah.
So, >> you're not surprised by any of this, correct, Nolan? I mean, you already said you came here with the intention to steal with her. So, right.
Is that accurate, Nolan?
>> I have a hard time answering that one.
>> What do you mean you have a hard time answering that one? I don't understand.
Can I ask it a different way to help?
Because you already said that's what you guys came for.
>> I didn't say I thought we came.
>> No, I said you you came both came here with the intention to steal cuz you were down in Pullman at a friend's house and you said yes.
>> Not with the intention.
>> Oh, not the but >> when you got here you both decided it would be a good idea to steal.
>> It was pretty much me who decided >> and Nolan just went along with it. I mean, he was combative, but >> he was what?
>> He was combative. I don't know why I pushed it.
>> He was He He told you not to steal.
>> Yeah.
>> Didn't you tell me he helped you remove the spider wrap off the speaker?
>> Yeah, but >> Oh, okay. There you go. How did they remove it?
>> Uh, they told me they broke the handle.
I can show you out there. They broke the plastic handle that's on it because the wrap had done underneath it and then they were able to slide the wrap off of it.
>> Oh, like they broke >> what they told me.
>> Okay. Okay.
>> Trying to be honest with you how Yeah, for sure. For sure. So, you two broke the spider wrap together.
>> Not the spider wrap, but the handle.
>> The handle to remove the spider wrap.
It's like the old lady who swallowed the fly.
So, uh All right. Uh yeah, this is pretty straightforward for Sergeant Patter. Both you go ahead and stand up.
>> You can keep the bag done.
>> Go ahead and turn around. Face away from me. You are both at this time under arrest for theft, third degree. Uh, you are being unvisitely recorded. Uh, I guess I'll ask. Would you like those rights I read to you read to you again?
>> It's a yes. No kind of thing.
>> Would you like them read to you again?
>> Okay. Mr. Nolan, would you like them read to you again? You remember them?
>> Okay.
Tightness.
Bowman 4102 in custody.
Let's see here.
Um, Mr. Zayn, I'll just uh take those form.
I'm going to take it to my station, do fingerprints and photographs, that kind of stuff. So, I'll just take the forms with me and >> I'll trade you when you bring Oh, you don't bring me my stuff anymore, do you?
>> I can't.
>> I like it the oldfashioned way.
>> All right. Go ahead and face this for me. Spread your feet. Do you have anything on you that would stick me, stab me, poke me, anything like that?
No.
>> Okay.
foil. Burnt foil recorded. I told you that. Oh, burnt foil.
>> I picked it up off the floor.
>> That's You did.
>> Oh, that was nice of you. Spread your feet for me. Spread your feet further.
There you go. Back of my hand.
>> Okay. Yeah, absolutely.
>> I'm sorry.
>> I'm going to have you do the same thing, right? Just make it fine.
>> Okay.
>> Same question to you. Anything else? It doesn't appear that there's anything there. Just go ahead and just face the wall there. Thank you.
>> Yeah, I I see that. That's a Yeah, we'll >> Can you raise your hand? Hands up, boys.
>> We can grab them.
What is this? baggies. Oh, yeah. There we go. Probably why you're stealing stuff.
>> No.
>> To pay for a drug habit. So, I bet you didn't find the burnt foil on the ground either.
But who knows?
>> Not me. Back of my hand here.
Let me go up your way.
>> Uh, Mr. Zay, do you have a baggie? What >> or something like that?
>> Absolutely.
>> I know you keep them for me. Envelopes, baggies, that kind. Uh, let's do envelope. Let's do manila.
>> Thank you.
>> Oh, you got that?
>> Yeah, I'll put it.
Mr. Zayn likes to keep us keep us in stock with some nice supplies, which I appreciate.
Washington lottery. You know, someone won $7.4 $4 million a couple weeks ago.
>> Really?
>> It wasn't me. It wasn't me. I still have to come to work probably.
>> Was that for you? He'll transfer Mr. Nolan for me.
>> I got you.
>> I'll transfer.
>> Did you want the oil in or you want me to throw them away?
>> Uh, sure. Sure. Yeah, why not? We don't need to litter your place up.
I know.
>> Sorry. You going to transport?
>> Yeah, just we'll do Poland Poland holding and we'll go from there.
>> So, you will you'll bring this to my >> I will bring you with all the stuff that you >> appreciate and the statement just like the old times.
>> Absolutely.
>> Okay. Deal. Thank you, Mr. Zay. You're very welcome.
So, we're going to go this way.
When was the last time you used >> What's your uh what's your uh your choice? Those are also yours as well.
>> Okay.
Okay.
>> Did you?
>> Yeah, we did quit. But someone left the bag in my >> left the bag in your car. There's like lots of little baggies though. So, >> and then the burnt foil in your pocket, which you didn't find in the gravel.
It's not illegal to have burnt foil, but I it is like it's not really like super illegal to lie to me if it's an immaterial thing, which this would likely qualify as. But like this could be your first step on the road to redemption.
>> You know what I mean?
>> But the thing is, if I got like drug tested right now, I would not have like >> Yeah.
>> Like much in my system. Like >> Yeah.
>> You wouldn't have that much in your system?
>> No. Like I said, something left me left in my car and then >> and then it ended up in your system. You see where the issue is there? Like >> I do see the I'm owning up to that. Like it was messed up. I shouldn't have >> but like I was on my period and then pain and I was thinking like, you know, >> I know I talked myself into it. I shouldn't have. Like I should have just >> So when's the last time you used?
>> It's been like a week.
>> A week?
>> Yeah.
>> You just had the foil in your pocket for a week? No, I was in the car and then there was the piece on the ground that I It shouldn't be on the ground. Honestly, >> not on litter.
>> No.
>> Right. I got you.
>> I mean, yeah. Like I >> I was literally just in the car last night cleaning it out and you know, we have friends who still use, so that's probably where the issue is.
But >> my recommendation, this is free advice for you. Find different friends.
>> Yeah.
>> If you're trying to get clean.
>> Yeah. you know, >> because we did we were using for a while and like we we went to New Mexico and got clean. So, >> okay. Not many people can say that they went to New Mexico to get clean, but >> Yeah. Right.
>> Sure. probably the opposite, but >> without um without.
>> Okay. Well, you might want to try a different different strategy cuz this ain't working for you. So, okay. Uh so, yeah. What'll happen is if you don't have any warrants or anything, um I mean, if you do, we'll deal with it. If you don't, uh, you'll sit down at my holding facility approximately six hours and then you'll, uh, be released with a citation. Okay? If you do have warrants, obviously, we got to got to deal with that. Okay.
Thank you.
Uh, while you're in the back by vehicle, you are being audio and visually recorded by the incar camera located directly in front of you. If slash when it works.
>> Did you say you work?
Um, right now >> I don't.
>> Okay.
>> I thought you said you were kind of supporting Nolan.
>> I was. Yeah.
>> Last two years. I was Well, I' I've been working. I've worked for the last or how old am I? 28. I've been working the last 18 years of my life. But, >> um, unfortunately, I was late to work two days in a row cuz I used my Alexa and she didn't go off.
So, don't use Alexa for your alarm. Oh, I would never have Alexa.
>> Um, but yeah, I was late two days in a row and then I lost my job, unfortunately.
>> Oh, I'm sorry. Where did you work?
>> Hot Start. It's a thermal management company as in production.
I really love that job.
It is actually kind of funny in lay miserables or lay miserable when Jean Valjon steals the bread because he needs it. You know, he gets sent to sentenced to prison and then when he gets out and he steals the silver like he's okay, you know, it's kind of funny because he didn't need the silver. I mean, I guess that I I don't know. I would say he didn't need it, but uh he needed the bread.
So, it's good. But he turns his life around.
Have you seen Lay Miser Rob?
>> I haven't. I've >> It's good. It's good. It's good.
>> Yeah.
>> It's got Well, I mean, obviously it was a like a Broadway production. I don't know if it's Broadway or whatever, but they made a movie of it. Anne Hathaway >> and uh uh I believe Liam Niss. Oh, nice.
>> Good film. It's a good film. It's about kind of changing >> changing your life.
>> Yeah, >> you should watch it.
>> I should. Yeah, >> you should watch it.
>> It' be a good one for us.
>> Yeah, for sure. For sure.
>> We're at that point in the room.
You just wish you could change it all overnight, you know?
>> Yeah, for sure. For sure. He did that by living good. Now, there are some other themes in that film that are not that, but uh overall that's how I remember it.
And then uh and then if you're on a musical kick, The Greatest Showman >> with uh Hugh Jackman, that's a phenomenal phenomenal piece of cinema.
So, I'll try to remember that one.
>> Yeah. I mean, the message there is I don't know what the me What is the message?
Maybe it's if it doesn't matter if you're different. It doesn't matter if you're different. Maybe that's I don't know.
>> Good film though.
>> Good film.
>> Greatest showman.
>> What's that?
>> The Greatest Showman.
>> Greatest showman. Yeah.
>> Yep.
Following your dreams is another message in that. Nice.
It's going to shut on me. No, it's not.
Good. Good.
All right. Go and swing your feet out.
Step over here.
All right. We're walking to that building over there.
Yep. This way.
I have a bad ankle.
>> Oh, that's okay.
If >> you feel like you're going to fall, let me know.
>> Oh, no. It's good. I just sometimes sway because >> Oh, okay.
>> We're going to go this way. We can go through. Yeah, this will work. I don't usually take this way.
Good.
That's what I thought. Thank you.
All right, let's go. This will work.
One chair. You can have it. You can have the chair.
You can stand up. I'll take out Jenny, go ahead and stand up. Come over here for me.
Go and have a seat in there.
Be up to 6 hours. Thank you.
All right. And then I believe we're going to have you over in cell A here.
want to go ahead.
Okay.
All right. We'll be with you in a bit.
A few moments later, Hello.
>> Oh [ __ ] >> I'm Sergeant Patty with P Police Department.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. You're waiting here for your friends?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Do you know what they're doing in there?
>> I don't know. I've been in the car for a while now.
>> Okay. Yeah, I know. Do they They didn't let you know what they were doing.
>> No, I've been texting them, getting hold of them and everything.
>> Oh, okay. Yeah. Uh, so >> we're trying to at least.
>> Yeah, they got arrested for shoplifting.
>> Oh, are they are they in jail?
>> Yeah. Yeah. So, they'll be there for up to 6 hours. So, >> they didn't leave no keys or nothing.
>> They didn't leave you no keys or nothing. They didn't tell you that's what they were going in there to do.
>> No.
>> Oh, okay. Well, >> no keys or nothing.
>> No, I mean, they'll be out of there in 6 hours or so, but >> you know, it's a nice day.
>> Yeah, >> that's good. Not too hot, not too cold.
>> Gold walks type deal.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. They can tell me. Look, >> they didn't tell you. If they would have told you they were going shopping, then I mean, everyone knows you shop with the Polaro Walmarts in Cashville. Ketchup, you know. Have you Are you from Spokane, too?
>> Yeah.
>> Have you heard that after Spokane about Walmart down here? They don't talk about it up there.
>> I haven't heard nothing about >> Oh, man. They should spread the word that they coming down here and shoplifting. Zane Castro, >> they'll get you. That's the shoplifting guy. That's the Oscar prevention guy.
>> Yeah. He's like, he's like the friendly ghost. He just appears. You know what I mean? But uh yeah, spread the word up there. Hey, could I grab your name real quick so I can say I talked to you since you were in your his car? Nolan's car.
>> Yeah, that's an S A X O N.
>> S A >> XX O N.
>> That's your first name?
>> Yeah.
>> That's unique. I like it.
>> Yeah, thank you.
>> You live up there in Spokane?
>> Yeah.
>> Driver's license ID card through Washington.
>> Yep.
>> Who wants a good phone number for you, Saxon?
>> Well, do my mom's cuz >> you between phones?
>> Well, yeah. Are you staying with her?
>> Somebody stole my phone and so I just had to order a new SIM card and blacklist that >> Oh, up in Spokane. They stole it.
>> Yeah.
>> Can't have anything nice in Spokane.
>> I had to restart.
>> Yeah. Yeah. You can't have anything nice >> can.
Yeah. So, anyway, like I say, section they Well, right now they're probably about 5 hours. They got most I can keep them in there is about 5 hours. So, uh >> Wait, they're in locked over here. Yeah, I'm not taking them to county.
>> So jail over here.
>> Yeah, it's just a holding facility.
That's why I can keep them for 6 hours.
>> So I got to do my paperworks and get a fingerprints and photographs and then um >> get them out of here. So uh >> like what do you like like they were like like real stealing Jake?
>> Yeah, for real. It wasn't Yeah, it wasn't for fake, that's for sure.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Nothing they needed either. just just S's and G's. So, all right, Saxon, I appreciate you, man.
>> For sure. Enjoy pulling them. Please don't do what your friends do.
>> Thanks, A.
>> One hour later.
>> All right, Jenny. Good news. I'm going to get you out of here.
>> All right, then.
Let me put these keys back. Go ahead and just stand with your back to that blue uh fabric there. Now, I want you to look at that camera in front of you. I got our front desk person, Connor. He's the best in the business. Should have been a photographer. It's going to look real good. I guess that kind of depends on what face you make there, but uh he'll let us know what he's got. Okay. Now, without turning your Oh, remove your glasses, please. Now, without turning your body, turn your head and look that way.
All right. You put your glasses back on.
All right. So, do you have any scars, marks, or tattoos?
>> Um, yeah. I have one tattoo.
>> Oh, I don't need to see it. You can just tell me what it is.
>> Fair enough.
>> Just What is it on?
>> Is it a bird on the shoulder?
>> A bird?
>> Yeah.
>> Any other tattoos?
>> No.
>> No scars, marks?
>> Um, nothing really physical.
>> Okay, that's good enough. I guess my ankle, but >> All right, go down a seat in the brown chair on the other side of the counter for me.
>> All right, what I have here is a criminal trespass uh notice for Walmart.
So, if you return to any Walmart uh we'll go in the world, but definitely the United States. I guess if you stole from Walmart in China, you'd be in a lot more trouble than the trespass. Um if you uh uh return to any Walmart ever for the remainder of your life, uh you will be arrested for trespassing or you may be, but Walmart's pretty serious about it. So, uh, probably will be arrested for trespassing. If you were to go into a Walmart again and steal, then that'd be burglary, which is a felony. So, stay away from Walmart. That includes it parking lots. So, uh, right there, I don't know how Spokam Walmarts are, but I can assure you if you come back to Pullman Walmart, Zayn Casper will catch you. Uh, he's very good at his job. Uh what I have here is a criminal citation for theft thirdderee. Uh make sure to read this in its entirety. The address to the court where you will likely have to appear or maybe via Zoom, I don't know, is right there. Phone number for the courts right there. The address that they have is the G Avenue address. So if that's not correct where you would receive correspondence, give them a call. Should receive something in 3 to four weeks. If you don't receive something in 3 to four weeks, give them a call because you likely missed it. If you miss it, a warrant may be issued for your arrest.
Um, so you can get arrested for that.
Admittedly, I doubt Spokane, uh, if you were in Spokane, you had a warrant that they would arrest you for that. That's just me being honest with you. Um, but if you return to Whitman County, they certainly would. So, um, please appear for court. My, uh, I believe you will appear for court. Uh, but then my recommendation to you, if you don't appear for court, stay out of Whitman County. Okay. So, this address doesn't receive.
>> Okay. Yep. You have to call the court right there. Okay.
No, you get to keep that. That's your copy.
>> Oh, this is right in another.
>> Nice. Nice. Very smart. Um, yeah. So, you have that. My recommendation for you is to take these. Uh, not my plastic bin. I can't lose that. Boy, would I be in trouble if I did. Uh, take your belongings and you can put them on out in the lobby where uh Mr. Nolan is waiting for you. But don't take my bed.
>> But don't take my bed.
>> Yeah.
>> So, you can just jam that all in the purse. It looks like your purse could use a refresh anyway. So, right.
>> Yep.
>> And also, I would recommend staying off drugs. So, your life will probably become infinitely better if you were to do so. Easier said than done. I understand. But I still will tell you that.
>> Yeah. It's going to be off for sure.
>> Okay.
Ready?
disappointed in myself.
>> Yeah. I mean, you did tell Zayn that you stole from Walmart before, so I think the disappointment likely stems from being caught. But that's something you can kind of wrestle with yourself with.
All right, he'll let you out here.
Bada boom. Go and push.
There you go. Another door. You push on that one. Bada boom. Bada boom.
